What started as an online mattress and sleep solutions startup is now diversifying its offerings too. It is now also looking at entering the home solutions space. However, that is one space that already has a few well-established players, both online and offline. So how is Wakefit.co trying to create differentiation in the segment? “With our foray into the home solutions space, we are now invested in the science and innovation of home wellness. Based on scientific research in home ergonomics, we have designed new products such as study tables, book shelves, bedside tables, coffee tables, TV units, sofas, shoe racks, and dining tables that offer superior value to customers at an affordable price. Currently, we have six world-class manufacturing facilities – spread across Bengaluru, Jodhpur and Delhi – to cater to the growing consumer demand,” he added. The lockdown experience The first two months when operations came to a sudden halt, there was a lot of uncertainty and confusions about the future. Supply chain had been completely disrupted. However, that halt also led to a lot of pent up demand. Moreover, with people staying more at home, they started paying more attention to wellness and sleep. “As the lockdown eased, we registered an increase in customer queries about our products. There has been a perceptible shift in customer preferences, possibly, due to prolonged stay at home as well as crucial conversations about health and well-being,” shared Garg. As working from home became the norm, Wakefit.com also witnessed an upsurge in the demand for better home solutions. “We understand that customers are creating their own efficient and ergonomic work spaces within their homes, while also filling the gaps in their home furniture needs now that they are spending more hours indoors. This has contributed to steady growth in demand over the last two months. We surpassed pre-Covid demand in June and are on track to do the same in July as well,” he added. Wakefit.co’s marketing plans for FY2021 Wakefit.co has had an interesting marketing journey so far. Last year, a campaign it did, inviting entries for its sleep internship went viral, for all the right reasons. It was a smart campaign, and appealed to a huge consumer base that was intrigued at the prospect of getting paid to sleep. More recently, another campaign the startup did featuring actors Sumit Vyas and Rasika Dugal was also widely shared, for voicing what a lot ofus had been experiencing during the first few weeks of the lockdown. So what comes next in their marketing journey? “Our goal is to build brand awareness and the best way to do it, in our opinion, is to take the stance of educating customers and to focus on innovative ideas and content that will resonate with our target audience. For instance, intelligent campaigns – such as our sleep internship campaign or the open letter campaign which went live during the lockdown period – give us opportunities to engage with our customers in meaningful ways,” said Ramalingegowda. Recently, the brand also launched the ‘Wakefit Rewards’ initiative to provide value-added benefits to its customers. It also partnered with brands like Gaana, Cleartrip, Bombay Shaving Company, Ajio, 1MG and Parentlane among others to offer value-added offers on the purchase of Wakefit.co products. The collaboration was purely on goodwill, without any commercial considerations. This allowed the partner brands to attract traffic from Wakefit.co’s users without incurring any marketing costs while Wakefit.co’s customers derived value too. On what kind of marketing budgets they are looking at allocating this year, Ramalingegowda said, “Our marketing budget allocations have always been made keeping consumer sentiment and situational awareness in mind. We do not believe in spending large marketing budgets for the sake of it or because other brands are doing it. We always think about the benefit it will add to the customer’s life and then create initiatives accordingly.” Going deeper into Bharat While the brand is expanding its offering by diversifying, its next phase of growth will also come from going deeper into the country. Already close to 30% of its demand comes from Tier II and Tier III markets. “When it comes to going deeper into the country, strategic collaborations will be the key. We work with multiple logistic partners, who have unique strengths in diverse geographies, to ensure that Wakefit.co has a robust distribution and delivery system in every corner of India. We have capabilities to deliver across 19,000+ pincodes in the country and around 30% of our demand comes from Tier 2 and 3 markets. That's not to stereotype, or to say that women don't prioritize other things over appearance - I'm willing to bet the majority of women do. It's because women are often forced to try harder, be more professional, and put more effort in than their male counterparts. Some of Apple's male execs at the big event last week, including services boss Eddy Cue and marketing chief Phil Schiller, looked downright schlubby as they paced the stage in wrinkled shirts, ill-fitting jeans and unfashionable shoes. The black mock turtleneck and jeans became as iconic to Apple's brand as the company's white earbuds or the famous logo of an apple with a bite missing.Jobs appreciated the power of fashion. He chose to wear the same thing everyday both for its convenience and its ability to convey a message. And as former CEO of Burberry, she probably still has affection for the brand and its signature product, the trench coat. As head of Apple's entire global retail presence, Ahrendts has an unspoken responsibility to have great taste. She's responsible for putting Apple's products in their best light, for getting people to walk into a physical retail space (no easy feat these days), and for deciding the look and feel of the stores. So what Ahrendts' outfits need to project is an air of competence, stylishness, approachability, luxury, and a dash of futurism. At the Apple event, she knew she was going to be the only female presenter on stage, she's familiar with her colleagues' fashion sense - or lack thereof - and she's aware that she's one of the most important women in tech, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fabulous-life-of-angela-ahrendts-2015-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the highest-paid one</a> at that. So Ahrendts chose an outfit that was feminine and powerful; fashionable and forward-thinking. Ahrendts' clothes are not the most important thing about her (although she is a particularly fashionable woman). They'll never be more important than the things she says, or the work she does at Apple. But when it comes to powerful people, it's not only acceptable, it's important to notice what they're wearing. What could be the better bargain period than this when India's three biggest online market places – <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart%2C+Snapdeal+">Flipkart, Amazon India and Snapdeal</a> - touted discounts of as much as 80% during this festive season? 
 Alas! The enthusiasm of early birds was dampened somewhat as there were few eye-popping deals on the first day on <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> or Amazon India on the latest gadgets and fashion brands. 
 
But brands were relieved that their efforts to rein in price cuts had worked, confirming the trend of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=e-Commerce+firms+">e-Commerce firms</a> moving away from extravagant discounts. 
 
Instead they are focussing on better financials. 
 According to industry executives, deep discounts were available on online only and e-Commerce-focused products such as those made by <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>, Onida, BPL and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Motorola">Motorola</a>, and on older models of gadgets and smartphones. 
 
And a similar trend was witnessed in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=apparel+and+accessories">apparel and accessories</a>. This marked a sharp departure from last year, when the latest models of <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword>, <keyword id="173725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung-Galaxy">Samsung Galaxy</keyword> phones and Sony televisions were on sale. The e-Commerce firms offered maximum discounts on their in-house apparel brands where margins are twice that of other clothing. "None of our fresh merchandise is on discount except old or last-season stock," said J Suresh, chief executive of Arvind Lifestyle Brands, which sells brands such as Gap, US Polo, Wrangler and Calvin Klein. 
 Lets’ know how the big three – <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, Flipkart and Amazon India – planned to rob customers this year! 
 
1. Conservative Approach: These companies are more conservative this year, ordering about 1.2 times the normal stock for the discount period unlike last year when they were targeting to grow sales by five times. "The focus is surely on margins and profitability," Suresh said. 
 
The chief of a leading shoe brand said deep discounting of 60-80%, which is usually offered during end-of-season sales by the ecommerce firms, was missing on the first day. "The madness was not there and even I was expecting good deals on international brands for my personal purchase where discounts were hardly 4-10%," he said, requesting anonymity. The absence of deep discounts on the hottest items is good news for brick and mortar retailers, who have been suffering on account of lower prices online. 
 
2. The Big E-tailing Rivalry: After Flipkart announced the October13-17 campaign, Amazon and Snapdeal announced similar exercises—a point that a company executive brought up. "Random thought: Checked out TOI. Looks like we set the dates for when others do their festival sales :)! Go BBD!," Flipkart chief product officer Punit Soni tweeted. Rohit Bansal, cofounder of Snapdeal, tweeted: "Looks like India has chosen @snapdeal as the app of their choice this festive season!" 
 
Flipkart said it "saw 25 items sold per second." The company said 10 lakh products were sold in the first 10 hours with 6 million visits from across the country. "This is pushing the limits, the volumes are much higher than last year," said Naman Sarawagi, cofounder and CEO of FindYogi, a chat-based shopping assistance app. 
 
On Monday, Snapdeal said that it sold five mobile phones every second as it racked up total sales of $100 million. Amazon India claimed that the first day of the festive sales was the biggest day in its history, four times bigger than the peak of last Diwali. Traffic from mobile was over 70% and lakhs of new customers came from cities like Aurangabad, Malappuram, Dhanbad, Kannur, Tiruchirappalli, Jamshedpur and others. 
 3. Ambulance On Standby: Most visitors were from cities like <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Delhi and Chennai. Ludhiana, Lucknow and Bhopal were among the top cities from non-metros, said Flipkart, where employees have been working round the clock to keep systems stable. Flipkart set up shuttle services for employees to be picked up and dropped and even put an ambulance and masseurs on standby. 
 
"With over 20 million visits from across the country on the first day, the fashion sale has been a big hit amongst our customers. For electronics - it will be even bigger on 15th October as we have lined up a range of smartphone launches for our customers from brands like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Google">Google</a>, <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword>, <keyword id="6357456" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Huawei">Huawei</keyword>, Intex and Micromax. All these new launches will have aggressive launch and exchange offers along with exciting bank discounts," a Flipkart spokesperson said. 
 
About 1.5 million shoppers bought goods worth over $100 million from Flipkart during the sale in 2014 but the site stuttered as a large number of people sought to access the site. This year's Billion Days sale is expected to be five times in size, according to one Flipkart employee who requested anonymity. 
 Amazon and Flipkart started their festive season sales on Tuesday while Snapdeal kicked things off on Monday. Discounts were attractive on online-exclusive smartphone brands such as Motorola, <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword>, Yu Yuphoria and <keyword id="2210217" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oneplus">OnePlus</keyword> 2. Price cuts were also offered on baby products, general merchandise, home decor and personal care products. The sale will carry on until the end of the week. 
 
Flipkart said there had been a surge in app downloads in anticipation of the sale. 
 
"It's great to see 1.6 million app installs in the last two days, which is a great indicator that India has been preparing well for The Big Billion Days," said Mukesh Bansal, head of commerce platform at Flipkart. The sale was off to a relatively glitch-free start. Flipkart, which was hit by glitches last year owing to heavy traffic, has staggered its app-only discounted sales over five days, across various categories such as fashion, home appliances, electronics and books.
