China's EV giants shine at Europe's largest auto show while local rivals despair

Researchers at the Department of Instrumentation and Applied Physics (IAP), Indian Institute of Science (<keyword id="19910180" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IISc" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="IISc" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="IISc">IISc</keyword>), and collaborators have designed a new <keyword id="23052480" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supercapacitor" source="keywords">supercapacitor</keyword> that can be charged by shining <keyword id="19982220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="light" source="keywords">light</keyword> on it. The supercapacitors can be used in various devices, including streetlights and self-powered electronic devices such as sensors, Bengaluru-based IISc said in a press release. "Capacitors are electrostatic devices that store energy as charges on two metal plates called <keyword id="20675368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electrodes" source="keywords">electrodes</keyword>. Supercapacitors are upgraded versions of capacitors - they exploit electrochemical phenomena to store more energy," Abha Misra, Professor at IAP and corresponding author of the study published in the 'Journal of Materials Chemistry A", was quoted as saying in the release. The electrodes of the new supercapacitor were made of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanorods grown directly on Fluorine-doped Tin Oxide (FTO), which is transparent. It was synthesised by Pankaj Singh Chauhan, first author and CV Raman postdoctoral fellow in Misra's group at IISc. Both ZnO and FTO are semiconductors with appropriately aligned energy levels, enabling superior performance of the photo-rechargeable supercapacitor, the release said. FTO, being transparent, allows light to fall on the optically active ZnO nanorods, which charges the supercapacitor. Chauhan explained that two electrolytes -- a liquid and a semi-solid gel -- were used as the conducting medium between the electrodes. The capacity for storing charges (<keyword id="23053496" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capacitance" source="keywords">capacitance</keyword>) is inversely proportional to the distance between the electrodes, it said. "As the distance becomes very small, the capacitance shoots up," Misra stated. "In electrostatic capacitors, maintaining a small distance between electrodes is difficult. However, in a supercapacitor, the electrodes' charges attract the electrolyte's oppositely charged ions, resulting in the formation of a charge layer just atoms away from each other - called an electric double layer or EDL. This results in the high capacitance of supercapacitors," the release stated. When the researchers shined ultraviolet (UV) light on their supercapacitor, they noticed a huge increase in the capacitance, several times higher than previously reported supercapacitors. They also noticed two unusual properties. First, while capacitance generally decreases as the voltage increases, they found the reverse - their supercapacitor's capacitance under light illumination actually increased with increasing voltage. "We call it necking behaviour," said A M Rao, Professor at Clemson University, the USA, and co-author. He explained that this may be due to the high porosity of the electrodes. Second, the energy stored within the supercapacitor typically decreases when it is charged faster, because the ions in the electrolyte do not move fast enough to respond to the increased charging rate, the release said. However, with the liquid electrolyte, the team found that the energy stored in the supercapacitor surprisingly increased upon fast charging under UV light, it was noted. Mihir Parekh, a postdoctoral researcher in Rao's group, developed theoretical models to explain these novel observations. The findings open the doors to developing simultaneously fast-charging and energy-dense supercapacitors, according to him. To design their present supercapacitor, the team explored two key ideas. First, the surface area of the electrodes was increased by combining two optically active semiconductor interfaces in a way that maximises interaction with light, leading to higher charge generation. Second, a liquid electrolyte was used to ensure an effective EDL. Together, these resulted in superior performance. "The ideas were simple - but when combined together, they worked very well," Misra explained. She added that tweaking the design of the supercapacitor can enable its charging with visible and infrared light as well. The IISc-Clemson team aims to further explore and better understand the novel phenomena observed to design better supercapacitors. "Supercapacitors have lots of applications," Misra explains. For example, they can potentially replace solar cells used in streetlights. They have a high power density, so they can release charge more quickly than batteries. They can also be used to power chips in electronic devices like cell phones. "We have miniaturised supercapacitors to the micron scale so that they can be integrated along with these microelectronic chips," Misra added.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US dollar will remain dominant for years despite shifts in the global currency landscape, wrote UBS.</li><li>Sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine have intensified de-dollarization discussions in recent years.</li></ul>The world's currency regime is shifting, but the greenback will still rule for a while.The subject of moving away from king dollar has come under intense discussion in recent years, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine triggered sweeping sanctions to lock Moscow out of the US dollar-based global financial system.This week, Swiss bank UBS joined <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/de-dollarization-dollar-war-usd-yuan-china-russia-brics-currency-2024-7">analysts pushing back</a> on the de-dollarization narrative, saying a US dollar-centric world will persist "for years to come."However, several currencies and commodities — particularly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dedollarization-china-allied-central-banks-hoard-gold-dollar-weaponization-record-2024-5">gold</a> — will play "critical roles" in the shifting world currency regime, Alejo Czerwonko, UBS' CIO of emerging markets in the Americas, wrote in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ubs.com/global/en/wealth-management/who-we-serve/marketnews/article.1621092.html">Monday note.</a>The US dollar's strong dominance is mainly because it's very entrenched in the global financial system and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bis.org/statistics/rpfx22_fx.htm">extremely liquid.</a>"It also offers deep derivatives markets — forwards, swaps, options, etc. — giving market participants the ability to hedge exposure efficiently," UBS' Czerwonko added.There are no close competing currencies to the dollar.The greenback is used in about 50% of all global payments and 84% of trade finance contracts — far outpacing its closest competitor, the euro, which accounts for 23% of all global payments and just 6% of trade finance, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.swift.com/our-solutions/compliance-and-shared-services/business-intelligence/renminbi/rmb-tracker/rmb-tracker-document-centre">SWIFT data.</a>The US currency still accounts for the lion's share of global foreign exchange reserves — 60% of the FX holdings of central banks, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2024/06/11/dollar-dominance-in-the-international-reserve-system-an-update">International Monetary Fund data.</a>In comparison, the Chinese yuan accounts for less than 5% of global payments and trade finance, separately. It also accounts for just 2.3% of global reserves.Even though currency competitors are lagging behind the greenback, this doesn't mean the dollar has no other competitors.UBS and a separate Bloomberg Intelligence report released on Wednesday flagged gold as a standout among competitors chipping away at the dollar. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/gold-price">spot gold price</a> is now trading at record highs around $2,500 an ounce thanks to strong demand.The amount of gold holdings in global reserves has doubled in just over five years, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analysis."As the yellow metal carries no credit or counter-party risk, some deem it as being better insulated from financial sanctions, particularly those from the emerging world," wrote UBS' Czerwonko.<h2 id="de1dbf77-2ca8-4c60-b8d2-23a39cf4dd5e">US political concerns influence the dollar, but there are issues for competing currencies</h2>Even though the dollar is unlikely to be dethroned anytime soon, there are fears about political risks in the US as election season begins.While the "US political atmosphere" and large fiscal deficit are experiencing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/dedollarization-dollar-dominance-us-politics-economy-trade-fed-china-yuan-2024-6">serious issues</a> that investors are concerned about, UBS' Czerwonko thinks they aren't enough to topple the dollar from its perch as the world's reserve currency now."The situation in competing jurisdictions is also dire; in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man can remain king," wrote Czerwonko.After all, the US still ranks highly for market openness, regulatory quality and efficiency, and the rule of law. The AI technology revolution is also centered in the US, "cementing the country's reputation for innovation and acting like a magnet for foreign capital," he added.Nonetheless, foreign investors are watching the US electoral race "with angst," Czerwonko wrote.He also issued this warning: "Although shifts in the global currency order typically take place at a glacial pace, rising geopolitical tensions can trigger quicker adjustments."Similarly, Bloomberg Intelligence said said a Wednesday report that a potential second Trump term could hasten a global currency regime change."Any title toward isolationism in a Trump second term, such as altered US attitudes toward its role in NATO and international affairs would spur de-dollarization," wrote Bloomberg Intelligence analysts.The Chinese yuan is already the "confirmed rival to the dollar in emerging markets," per Bloomberg Intelligence. Other rivals include the Indian rupee and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/dedollarization-dollar-dominance-us-politics-economy-trade-fed-china-yuan-2024-6">alternative initiatives</a> from groupings like BRICS.Any major changes are likely to be slow and far into the future."Global currency regimes are sticky," wrote Czerwonko. "Even as great economic powers rise and fall, their currencies' reserve status tends to survive well past the peak of their influence."

The dragged <keyword id="20130144" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="geopolitical-crisis" source="keywords">geopolitical crisis</keyword> in the Middle East has spurred a rush into safe-haven assets such as gold. Historically, gold, as an asset, is considered a haven as it typically manages to retain or appreciate its underlying value in times of turbulence. "But this rise would now partly be offset by the reduced duty cut (in India)," said the Infomerics Ratings report. Historical trends, such as the surge during the Russia-Ukraine war, highlight gold's role as a safeguard against inflation and market instability during <keyword id="19982403" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-uncertainties" source="keywords">global uncertainties</keyword>. Prices of gold, considered safe investment bets, have seen a mild correction after the latest stellar bull run. Gold has been in demand for a considerable period, with its prices rallying to hit record highs now and then. Geopolitical conflict in West Asia that stretched for a long time, buying by several central banks, including the RBI, and physical demand, have altogether pushed gold prices northwards. Gold is a scarce commodity, and any mismatch in demand-supply conditions may invariably trigger a sharp price rise. "Gold's diverse uses, in jewellery, technology and by central banks and investors, mean different sectors of the gold market rise to prominence at different points in the global economic cycle. This diversity of demand and self-balancing nature of the gold market underpin gold's robust qualities as an investment asset," said Infomerics Ratings. Festive season buying, a weak dollar, uncertainty surrounding the US elections, and possible Fed rate cuts in September could raise prices, the report noted. In the wake of the presentation of the <keyword id="19908389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Budget" source="keywords">Union Budget</keyword> on July 23, 2024, by the Finance Minister, gold prices in India declined sharply. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman slashed the import duty on gold from 15% to 6% in the Budget presented on July 23. Days after the Budget, gold became cheaper by Rs 6,200 in most states of India. In the capital Delhi, the price of 10 grams of 24 carat gold came down to about Rs 69,140. "With surging demand for gold, especially as the <keyword id="19896655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wedding-season" source="keywords">wedding season</keyword> approaches, gold prices are likely to rise this financial year, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions, robust central bank buying, and expectations of <keyword id="21050688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-Fed-rate-cuts" source="keywords">US Fed rate cuts</keyword>." Infomerics Ratings report said. In India, gold has strong cultural and religious significance.
