Aubrey Jackson Shelton II was arrested and charged with tax evasion, bank fraud, and wire fraud, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndca/pr/san-francisco-man-charged-tax-evasion-and-embezzling-27-million-san-francisco-company">press release</a> on Friday from the US Attorney's Office in the <keyword id="4219292" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="northern-district" source="Orion">Northern District</keyword> of California says. An indictment alleges that the former San Francisco executive used his "exclusive control" of the firm's payroll software to "inflate his salary and bonuses," paying himself large sums of money between 2013 and 2021, the press release says. It adds that he used the software to categorize the payments as "Executive Loan," "Misc Reimbursement," and "Mileage Reimbursement." He also is alleged to have falsified information given to the payroll processor, given false payroll approval to the CEO of the company, and sent false tax returns to the IRS that did not disclose the money he is accused of embezzling. Shelton is scheduled to appear at San Francisco federal district court in October. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to prison for up to 30 years for bank fraud and be fined up to $1 million for each violation. He could face additional prison time of up to 20 years for wire fraud and a potential further five years for tax evasion, according to the press release. Another California tech executive was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of four counts of defrauding investors last year. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/theranos-founder-ceo-elizabeth-holmes-life-story-bio-2018-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">Elizabeth Holmes duped investors</a> with false claims about the effectiveness of the technology at her blood-testing company, Theranos. However, her <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elizabeth-holmes-out-of-prison-nearly-2-years-sooner-2023-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">prison term was shortened</a> by two years in July. RepairPal told Insider in a statement: "Shelton acted alone and no other company employees were involved. RepairPal has no criminal liability in this matter and Shelton's actions have had no material impact on our partners, customers or day-to-day operation of our business. We have cooperated fully with authorities and will continue to do so."

They worked together until Jobs and Wozniak left the company in 1985. Shelton left the company in 1992.Business Insider asked Shelton what it was like dealing with Jobs' infamous "reality distortion field" - his ability to convince colleagues of grand, ambitious projects, even when they didn't make sense, based on the sheer intensity of his personality. In truth, Shelton says, Jobs' was not the master of mind control that many people made him out to be.Shelton was initially hired as a marketing analyst but soon became the product manager for many of the early versions of Apple's software, such as Apple Writer, the word processing app for the Apple II.In 1981, not many people were writing software applications for the Apple II. Shelton was worried that the Apple Software Publishing group was promising impossible-to-meet sales numbers at the expense of quality. So Shelton decided to resign. It was the first computer to use a point-and-click interface, with a mouse, and pull-down menus for commands and functions.The machine was revolutionary: It swept away computers that used lines of code text as commands and replaced them with a visual environment that featured folders, icons, and trash cans - things people recognised from real life. This tiny amount of memory was a big deal in its day. But even during Mac's development stages, it threatened to become a limit. One day, Jobs gathered the Mac team - about 40 people - in the atrium at Bandley, where there was a Bosendorfer piano, a ping-pong table and a 500cc BMW motorcycle. He wanted to address his decision to hardwire a 128K limit into the new Mac. The 128K limit meant that users could not run programs that needed more than 128K of capacity - including the operating system.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Joe SheltonThere was a motorbike parked in the Atrium of 10460 Bandley Drive. Shelton says: "It was a 500cc BMW motorcycle similar or identical to the one that Steve had ridden in Africa (or so the story goes.) A man called Apple one day in early 1984 after the Mac was introduced and offered to trade it to Steve for a new Mac. Steve agreed and I got a ride to pick the BMW. It was late Friday afternoon so rather than leaving it outside for the weekend and having my garage full of my five motorcycles plus his, I parked it in the atrium - where it remained for some time like a work of art. It was perfect! I don't know if Steve ever took ownership."</div></div></div>Standing in front of his employees, Jobs told them, "we want developers to write small, efficient code, not Microsoft code." His logic was that would metastasize all over the place. The limit would become Apple's advantage by forcing developers to do more with less headroom.The staff seemed to like the logic - Jobs' reality distortion field at work - but Shelton wasn't convinced. "I was the only person who wasn't accepting it because I knew how operating systems grow, how software grows." Jobs thought developers would make their apps smaller, "but it wasn't going to go that way," Shelton says. Software code only ever balloons in size.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Although Shelton's employee number was 345, due to staff churn there were only about 100 people at Apple when he joined in 1979.</div></div></div>So Shelton visited a colleague in the Mac development group, Andy Hertzfeld, the primary software architect on the Mac. "We can't do that," Shelton told him, referring to the 128K limit. "That's really dumb. We can't design a hard stop on the software."Hertzfeld replied, "I agree, we won't do that."But didn't Steve Jobs just insist on a 128K limit?Hertzfeld told Shelton, "Steve will do what he wants to do. We will do what Steve needs us to do. Except when we need to do what we need to do."That was the moment Shelton realised the Jobs reality distortion field had holes in it. The Mac was not, ultimately, hardwired into a 128K limit although many believed it was. It had capacity beyond that, although Jobs' people did not initially inform their boss that the Mac was more powerful than the company was officially saying."Steve figured it out eventually," Shelton said.Wozniak was almost the opposite of Jobs, Shelton says. Jobs regarded himself as the company's North Star, a leader who would get up in front of the entire Mac group staff and announce a difficult decision. But Wozniak - who preferred building and coding - sometimes ducked management responsibility.Shelton remembers one time trying to get Wozniak's input on a decision as Wozniak walked through the office. Wozniak wasn't the tallest person in the room but he has distinctive bushy hair, which Shelton could see bobbing between the cubes that separated each desk."Hey Woz," Shelton yelled at him."His head would disappear when he ducked down [behind the cube walls] because he didn't want to deal with you."Apple went public in 1980, making Woz a wealthy man. "The minute he got money Woz was mentally out of it," Shelton says. He had a child-like enthusiasm for new toys and gadgets. He bought a single-engine airplane with his new wealth (<a href="https://www.cultofmac.com/465778/today-in-apple-history-steve-wozniak-in-plane-crash/">which he crashed in 1981</a>). "Woz loved his stuff," Shelton says. Inside 'the reality distortion field': An early Apple employee told us what it was like having Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak as his bosses

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="913052" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="impact-investing">Impact investing</keyword> targets companies or projects committed to specific social or environmental causes.</li><li>While many perform well, the return on impact investments may be lower than more traditional investments'.</li><li>Impact investing is largely limited to private equity, but individuals can get involved via broader ESG funds.</li></ul>In the past, investing for a profit and "making a difference" were two of life's lodestars that most people followed separately. But times are changing. Investors are increasingly looking to direct their funds towards companies that are making positive social or environmental impacts in the world. The essence of impact investing is putting your principal where your principles are. But how exactly does someone find impact investing opportunities? Is it safe and profitable to invest in social impact? Here's what you need to know.<h2>What is impact investing?</h2>Impact investing is the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-esg-simple-2021-uk-app-big-exchange-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">process of investing</a> in companies, funds, or firms that are dedicated to improving the environment or society while also providing a financial return for investors. There are a wide variety of issues that an impact investor may seek to address. These include (but are certainly not limited to):<ul><li>Poverty</li><li>Hunger</li><li>Education gaps</li><li>Climate change</li><li>Pollution</li><li>Child or forced labor</li><li>Wage inequality</li><li>Diversity</li><li>Animal cruelty</li></ul>Some impact investments are concessionary, meaning the company's top priority is impact rather than investor profit. But non-concessionary impact investments promise a "double bottom line," meaning that they hope to achieve their social or environmental goals without significantly hindering returns.A <a href="https://www.ussif.org/blog_home.asp?Display=155" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent report by the Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment (US SIF)</a> found that $17 trillion of US-based investment assets in 2020 used sustainable investing strategies (a 42% increase from 2018). Put another way, a third of all assets under management in the United States now take sustainability issues into consideration.<h2>Impact investing, ESG, <keyword id="6617678" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Socially-responsible-investing">socially responsible investing</keyword>: What's the difference? </h2>Environmental, social, and governance (ESG), socially responsible investing (SRI), and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jean-case-impact-investing-revolution-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">impact investing</a> are sometimes used interchangeably. All three do involve the strategy of considering ethical values alongside financial values when evaluating investments. The issues that concern them overlap too. But there are also some key differences. ESG standards help socially conscious investors gauge a company's commitment to ethical business practices. While no single ESG rating system is used industry-wide, popular ESG data-providers include MSCI, Morningstar, Bloomberg, Sustainalytics, and more.With SRI, investors purposefully avoid companies with products or business principles that don't align with their values. For example, SRI investors may choose to eliminate all companies that produce tobacco products or use child labor from their portfolios.The biggest difference between ESG and SRI is that ESG tends to be inclusive and SRI exclusive. An ESG-conscious investor may still invest in companies that aren't ranked as highly as others, especially if they've expressed a commitment to improvement. But, with SRI, negative investments are typically screened out completely based on the investor's filtering criteria.Impact investing is sometimes thought of as a subset of SRI. It can be even more exclusive in that the investments chosen are often companies or non-profits that are fully committed to specific causes. So while SRI investors may invest in any company that doesn't violate their values, an impact investor may look for companies that are fighting for values such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sc/-progress-being-made-to-end-world-hunger-by-2030-2020-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eradicating hunger</a>, poverty, or other worthy pursuits.Admittedly, it can seem a bit hair-splitting. One key point, though, is that impact investing, as the name implies, targets investments, initiatives, and companies that show measurable results - not just good intentions.<h2>Why does impact investing matter?</h2>Impact investing could encourage more people to get involved in efforts that have been traditionally relegated to philanthropy or charitable contributions. With the potential to achieve at least some return, more dollars may be directed towards companies that are trying to address society's problems.Admittedly, impact investments tend to generate lower returns than the stock market as a whole. A<a href="https://thegiin.org/assets/2017_GIIN_FinancialPerformanceImpactInvestments_Web.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 2017 study by the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN)</a> of 71 private equity impact funds found their average net return rate to be 5.8% (well below the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/average-stock-market-return" target="_blank" rel="noopener">S&amp;P 500's average rate of return</a>).To be clear, this financial give-up only applies to impact investing in the strictest sense. If by "impact investing," you actually mean <keyword id="8374461" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ESG-Investing">ESG investing</keyword>, you can expect much better returns. Multiple studies have shown that investors can build ESG-focused portfolios without compromising returns. In fact, <a href="https://www.morningstar.com/articles/973590/us-esg-funds-outperformed-conventional-funds-in-2019" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Morningstar found</a> that in 2019, US-based. ESG funds actually outperformed their conventional fund peers. A <a href="https://www.dol.gov/agencies/ebsa/about-ebsa/our-activities/resource-center/fact-sheets/final-rule-on-financial-factors-in-selecting-plan-investments" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent ruling from the US Department of Labor</a> may eliminate impact investing vehicles from 410(k) or corporate pension plans. The rule prohibits fiduciary financial advisors from selecting investments based on any goals other than achieving the highest possible return for their clients. The rule doesn't specifically call out ESG or impact investing. Still, any investments that have a below-average anticipated rate of return (as many impact investments do) could be eliminated from employer-sponsored retirement plans moving forward.<h2>Types of impact investments</h2>Impact investing is a diverse field - there are many ways you can invest for good. How can you find impactful companies to invest in? Again, this depends on how strictly you define impact investing. If you actually mean ESG investing, you have many options. First, you can buy stock shares of companies that receive high ESG ratings. Or for broader diversification, you can invest in ESG <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-to-invest-in-mutual-funds-step-by-step-guide">mutual funds</a> or ETFs. Most impact investing funds aren't publicly traded. Instead, they tend to be private equity firms (open only to institutional or accredited investors) or companies.Accredited investors include individuals with a net worth of at least $1 million or annual income of at least $200,000 for the last two years. Or, investors who are able to demonstrate a certain level of financial sophistication.<h3>Finding impact investing opportunities</h3>There are several lists available online that rank impact investing funds.
