<ul class="summary-list"><li>After two years of near silence, new videos of <keyword id="7105858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Princess-Latifa">Princess Latifa</keyword> of <keyword id="6354539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dubai">Dubai</keyword> have emerged.</li><li>The princess claims she's being kept against her will in a "villa prison" in Dubai.</li><li>Latifa tried to escape in 2018, but was captured by Indian commandos and returned to Dubai.</li></ul><p>Princess Latifa bint Mohammed al-Maktoum, the daughter of Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, says she's being held "hostage" by her family and fears for her life.</p><p>In a newly-released series of videos recorded in secret over <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-56075528">seven months</a> and shared with BBC Panorama, the princess said that her family has held her against her will in a "villa prison" under constant police surveillance.  </p><p>Latifa first tried to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/princess-sheikha-latifa-planed-7-year-escape-from-uae-dubai-report-2018-12">escape Dubai</a> in 2018. She and her friend Tiina Jauhiainen, a Finnish capoeria instructor, fled over the <keyword id="6354870" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="United-Arab-Emirates">United Arab Emirates</keyword> border into Oman, and attempted to sail a small inflatable boat into international waters.</p><p>But her plan was thwarted when a group of Indian commandos overtook the vessel and held her at gunpoint. She was sent back to Dubai and held in solitary confinement.</p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UN7OEFyNUkQ" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>Latifa had previously tried to leave Dubai in 2002, when she was 18, in an attempt to help her missing sister <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/05/kidnapping-case-what-happened-to-sheikh-mohammeds-daughters">Shamsa</a>. Shamsa had been living in London but was kidnapped off the street in 2000, by men who were believed to be working for her father.  </p><p>Latifa was caught, though, and sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.</p><p>In a video made before her attempted escape in 2018, Latifa said her father was "the most evil person I've ever met in my life. He's pure evil. I don't really know if I'm going to survive this situation," Latifa said, according to a transcript provided by the British human rights lawyer David Haigh, who leads the <a href="https://freelatifa.com/">campaign to free her</a>.</p><p>Haigh told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/16/world/middleeast/sheikha-latifa-video-dubai.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur=cur">The New York Times</a> the videos came to him via Jauhiainen, who said the slow trickle of videos from the princess had dried up toward the end of 2020, prompting her to want to release them.</p><p>A year after Latifa's failed escape, one of Sheikh Mohammed's wives, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/princess-haya-hires-baroness-shackelton-divorce-emir-dubai-2019-7">Princess Haya of Jordan</a>, fled to London and began a custody battle with the sheikh over the couple's two children. </p><p>In addition to serving as the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed is also the vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.</p><p>He is one of the richest men in the world and occasionally socializes with the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-56075528">British royal family</a>, but has received low marks for the <a href="https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2020/country-chapters/united-arab-emirates">country's human rights record</a>. </p><p>Messages to the government of Dubai and to David Haigh were not immediately returned. </p>

A Dubai princess says she's being held hostage by her family following an attempted escape

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Queen accepted racehorses from Sheikh Mohammed, the Emir of <keyword id="6354539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dubai">Dubai</keyword>, The Times reported.</li><li>The Sheikh is accused of imprisoning his daughter, <keyword id="7105858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Princess-Latifa">Princess Latifa</keyword>, after she tried to escape.</li><li>One of his wives, Princess Haya, said she fled Dubai for London after learning of Latifa's plight.</li></ul><p>Queen Elizabeth II accepted gifts from the ruler of Dubai in the wake of allegations that he abducted and tortured his daughter, <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/queen-has-accepted-racehorses-from-ruler-of-dubai-even-after-his-wife-princess-haya-fled-to-london-n6fskwlj9">The Times of London reported Sunday.</a></p><p>Buckingham Palace received nine racehorses from Godolphin Racing, a stable owned by <keyword id="1465490" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sheikh-Mohammed-bin-Rashid-al-Maktoum">Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum</keyword>, from April 2019, The Times said. </p><p>That same month, the Sheikh's youngest wife, Princess Haya, had <a href="https://www.insider.com/princess-haya-dubai-flees-husband-sheik-al-maktoum-2019-7">fled Dubai for London with her children</a>, saying she feared for her life after hearing allegations that her husband had tortured and imprisoned Princess Latifa, one of his other children.</p><p>Insider contacted Buckingham Palace and the government of Dubai for comment about the gifts.</p><div type="image" title="princess haya epsom" height="1000" width="2000" msid="81274414" hostid="261"></div><p>The Queen and Sheikh Mohammed have been close for decades, bonding over a shared love of horse racing.</p><p>However, the relationship came under scrutiny after it was claimed that Sheikh Mohammed abused his daughter and threatened his wife. </p><p>In February 2018, one of the Sheikh's children, Princess Latifa, <a href="https://www.insider.com/princess-latifa-escape-dubai-friend-interview-2019-7">fled Dubai by boat with the help of her martial arts instructor</a> and a self-styled former French spy. </p><p>Emirati commandos captured their boat off the coast of India, and Latifa was returned to Dubai. <a href="https://freelatifa.com/full-length-latifa-video/">In a pre-recorded video released after her capture</a>, Latifa said she escaped because she had been beaten and tortured on her father's orders.</p><p>In February 2021, a number of new videos of Latifa were shared with the BBC. In the videos, <a href="https://www.insider.com/dubai-princess-latifa-says-family-holding-hostage-2021-2">Latifa said she was still being detained</a> in a "villa prison" by police as a result of her escape attempt.<div type="image" title="Princess Lartifa" height="768" width="1536" msid="81274415" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The fallout from the escape saw Princess Haya flee Dubai for the UK with the two children she shared with the Sheikh.</p><p>The princess sued for custody of her children upon arrival in London, and <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-48843168">said she feared for her life</a> after realizing that he had imprisoned Princess Latifa. She said that the Sheikh had threatened her, saying "you and the children will never be safe in England," in May 2019.</p><p>The UK High Court said <a href="https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Al-M-Factfinding-APPROVED-Judgment-111219-for-publication.pdf">in a fact-finding judgment</a> released in March 2020 that Sheikh Mohammed was responsible for abducting Latifa.</p><p>"I have found that he continues to maintain a regime whereby both of these two young women are deprived of their liberty," the judge said in the ruling.</p><p>In response, Sheikh Mohammed <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-britain-dubai-court-sheikh/dubai-ruler-sheikh-mohammed-says-uk-court-ruling-was-one-sided-idUSKBN20S298">said</a>: "As a head of government, I was not able to participate in the court's fact-finding process. This has resulted in the release of a 'fact-finding' judgment which inevitably only tells one side of the story."</p><p>Following the ruling, <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/queen-shuns-dubai-ruler-sheikh-mohammed-hwhvtd8fz">The Times of London reported</a> that the Queen planned to distance herself from the Sheikh.</p><p>The abduction of Latifa was not the first time that the Sheikh has been accused of mistreating his children. In 2000, Sheikha Shamsa, Latifa's sister, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2001/dec/15/jamiewilson.stuartmillar">fled her family's English country estate in a Range Rover</a> when she was 18.</p><p>She was caught and sent to Dubai.</p>

The Queen accepted several horses from the ruler of Dubai after he was accused of kidnapping his daughter

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A UK judge ordered Sheikh Mohammed of <keyword id="6354539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dubai" source="Orion">Dubai</keyword> to pay a $679 million divorce settlement to his ex-wife.</li><li>Princess Haya had filed for divorce in London, known as "the divorce capital of the world."</li></ul><p>When a British judge last year <a href="https://www.insider.com/princess-haya-wins-734m-settlement-divorce-sheikh-mohammed-flee-2021-12">ordered Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum</a>, the emir of Dubai, to pay a £554 million ($679 million) divorce settlement to his former wife, Princess Haya, it was believed to be the largest ever divorce settlement secured in the UK. It also reaffirmed London's status as the de facto "divorce capital of the world," at least for the rich and famous.</p><p>The UK court system is indeed the go-to destination for wives of the super-wealthy looking to divorce, mainly due to a legal tradition which is more favorable than most to the financially weaker party. </p><p>Multiple spouses have secured multi-million pound payouts — sometime amounting to 50% of their husband's assets — by taking advantage of the system which affords judges a huge amount of discretion. </p><div type="image" title="Queen Elizabeth II (R) and Princess Haya in Windsor, Berkshire." height="1000" width="2000" msid="88437908" hostid="261"></div><p>This is a result of the a landmark judgment in 2000 where the concept of the "equal sharing" of assets became the norm. The often-cited case — "<a href="https://www.stowefamilylaw.co.uk/blog/2009/12/29/white-v-white/">White v White</a>" — concerns Martin White and Pamela White, farmers from Somerset who filed for divorce in 1994.</p><p>After years of wrangling, the court found that Mrs. White was entitled to 40% of the couple's £4.6 million ($5.6 million) assets, even though most of them were in Mr. White's name.</p><p>While the couple were not super-rich, the precedent they set has had huge ramifications.</p><p>In the case of the sheikh, believed to be a multi-billionaire, British Justice Philip Moor ruled in November 2021 that he must recompense his ex-wife Haya for her possessions, including: £13.6 million ($16.6 million) for Haya's jewelry; £1 million ($1.2 million) for haute-couture clothing; £1 million ($1.2 million) for cars; and £5 million ($6.1 million) for racehorses.</p><p>Haya had sued for divorce and custody of her two children <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/princess-haya-dubai-flees-husband-sheik-al-maktoum-2019-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">after escaping</a> to the UK in 2019.</p><p>As Mark Harper, a divorce lawyer at Hughes Fowler Carruthers, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/shortcuts/2015/feb/24/divorce-rich-husband-london-english-law">told The Guardian in 2015</a>: "If you're the person with the money then most people will move heaven and earth to avoid a divorce in England because the law is much more generous to, typically, the wife, the person without the money."</p><div type="image" title="uk high court royal courts of justice" height="642" width="1285" msid="88437910" hostid="261"></div><p>London has been the scene of some of the financial elite's messiest and most expensive divorces.</p><p>In 2014, the British investor <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/executive-pay-chris-hohn-pays-himself-270-million-2017-12?r=US&amp;IR=T">Sir Christopher Hohn</a> was told to pay £337 million — nearly half of his £700 million fortune — to his American wife, Jamie Cooper-Hohn.</p><p>Even though Hohn earned the money himself, the court ruled that his business was conducted in "partnership" with his wife, <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/11258436/Sir-Chris-Hohns-wife-awarded-337-million-in-divorce-cash-fight.html">The Daily Telegraph reported</a>.</p><p>In 2017, the Russian oligarch <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-divorce-akhmedov/ex-wife-of-russian-billionaire-secures-first-sliver-of-572-mln-divorce-bill-idUKKBN1OC2NS">Farkhad Akhmedov was told to surrender £453 million</a> — about 40% of his fortune — to his wife Tatiana. </p><p>And in an <a href="https://www.familylawweek.co.uk/site.aspx?i=ed115866">anonymous 2013 divorce case known as "M v M,"</a> a judge declared that 50% of a Russian man's £107 million fortune should go to his Russian ex-wife, who had filed for divorce in London.  </p><p>Ayesha Vardag, a divorce lawyer, told The Guardian that the UK is a fantastic jurisdiction for wives seeking divorce.</p><p>She spoke to the newspaper after representing <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/apr/06/laura-ashley-boss-to-pay-ex-wife-divorce-settlement-of-64m">Pauline Chai, a Malaysian model, in her divorce from the fashion tycoon Khoo Kay Pen</a>, a case in which Chai won £64 million.</p><p>Vardag said: "The principle that there is no discrimination between breadwinner and homemaker is the cornerstone of why the English jurisdiction is seen as a particularly fair one for the financially weaker spouse."</p><p>Lawyers for Khoo <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/ceciliarodriguez/2013/08/22/divorce-tourism-london-is-still-the-top-destination/#2f7c3107515c">told the court</a> that his case had enhanced "the ill-gotten reputation of this country for being the divorce capital of the world."</p><p>Vardag, one of London's most revered divorce lawyers, <a href="https://time.com/5037316/britain-divorce-london-capital-ayesha-vardag/">told Time magazine</a> in 2018 that the reason so many wives have a legal argument for pursuing divorce in England is that London property is a prized asset for the super-rich.</p><p>This means the couple has assets over which a UK court can exert authority.</p><p>The UK court system is also favorable for the weaker party as longstanding pre-marriage assets — <a href="https://www.ramsdens.co.uk/blog/sharing-non-matrimonial-assets-rare-white-leopard">like inheritance or property bought before the wedding</a> — is treated the same way as assets gained after marriage. <a href="https://www.divorcenet.com/states/nationwide/property_division_by_state">This is not the case in many US states.</a></p><p>Haya and Mohammed separated in 2019 after he learned she was having affair with her British bodyguard, the court heard. She fled to the UK that year with her children after learning he was accused of imprisoning one of his other children, <a href="https://www.insider.com/princess-latifa-escape-dubai-friend-interview-2019-7">Princess Latifa</a>, because she tried to escape.</p>

How London became the divorce capital of the world for the mega-rich

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A UK court awarded <keyword id="12273473" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="princess-haya" source="Orion">Princess Haya</keyword> $734 million Sunday in her divorce from Sheikh Mohammed.</li><li>Haya fled to the UK in 2019 after learning Mohammed was accused of imprisoning one of his daughters.</li></ul><p>Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum must pay a £554 million ($734 million) settlement to his ex-wife Princess Haya, <a href="https://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWFC/HCJ/2021/94.html">a UK judge ruled</a>.</p><p>Haya and Mohammed, the emir of <keyword id="6354539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dubai" source="Orion">Dubai</keyword>, separated in 2019 after he learned she was having an affair with Russell Flowers, her British bodyguard, the court heard during proceedings.</p><p>She fled to the UK that year with the two children, now 14 and 9, she shared with Mohammed after learning he was accused of imprisoning one of his other children, <a href="https://www.insider.com/princess-latifa-escape-dubai-friend-interview-2019-7">Princess Latifa</a>, because she tried to escape.</p><p>After Haya left, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/princess-haya-dubai-flees-husband-sheik-al-maktoum-2019-7">Mohammed published a poem</a> titled "Affection in Your Eyes" in which he wrote, "We have an ailment that no medicine can cure."</p><p>As part of the settlement, Justice Philip Moor ruled that Mohammed must pay Haya £251 million within three months and that he must set up an education fund worth £3 million for the children.</p><p>Moor said Mohammed must pay £13.6 million for Haya's jewelry, £1 million for haute-couture clothing, £1 million for cars, and £5 million for racehorses.</p><p>The ruling by Moor also laid bare the extent of the couple's wealth and said Haya tried to bribe her security staff to keep her affair secret from her husband.</p><p>The judgment said that in her attempt to stop her husband finding out about Flowers, Haya paid bribes to "blackmailers" in her security staff who threatened to leak the affair to her husband.</p><p>To fund the payments, Haya took $9.3 million from the bank accounts of one of her children, the judgment said.</p><p>"I was scared, and that was the money available in that account," she previously told the court. </p><p>The security staffers who the judgment said received the payoffs were identified as Mr. A, Mr. B, and Mr. C.</p><p>The judgment said Mr. A received $3.3 million, while Mr. B and Mr. C shared $5.9 million.</p><p>"These individuals had blackmailed HRH over an affair she had with one of these four people," the judge wrote. "Nobody should be blackmailed and HRH must have been very frightened at this point."</p><p>The judgment also shed light on the vast wealth that both parties had access to. It said:</p><ul><li>While married, Haya and Mohammed spent £2 million on strawberries in one summer.</li><li>Their two children had an allowance of £10 million each per year. </li><li>While married, Haya was given an £83 million annual allowance.</li><li>In court proceedings, Haya asked the court to help her retrieve €74 million ($83 million) worth of clothing and £20 million worth of jewelry that Mohammed had in his possession.</li></ul>

Mobile phone numbers belonging to <keyword id="1861561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Princess-Haya">Princess Haya</keyword> bint al-Hussein of Dubai, her closest aides, advisers and friends, were being entered into a computer system operated by agents of the emirate of Dubai, one of the clients of spyware manufacturer <keyword id="3598670" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSO-Group">NSO Group</keyword>, <keyword id="115220" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Guardian">The Guardian</keyword> reported.<br /><br />Closest aides and friends of the emir's ex-wife also began to appear on the database as she moved to the UK.<br /><br />As her plane touched down in April 2019, Princess <keyword id="279365" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Haya">Haya</keyword>, who was accompanied by her two children, might have hoped she was beyond the reach of her ex-husband, the emir of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.<br /><br />The phone numbers of Haya, and eight of her close associates, appear in a dataset believed to indicate people of interest to a government client of <keyword id="2501810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSO">NSO</keyword>. That data has been obtained by Forbidden Stories and Amnesty International, and analysed by media organisations around the world, including the Guardian.<br /><br />The numbers in the leaked records include those of Haya's personal assistant, senior staff at her private security firm, and even one of the lawyers advising her in her custody dispute with Sheikh Mohammed.<br /><br />The Guardian reported her relationship with Sheikh Mohammed, which had been cordial, began to deteriorate following a highly public and unsuccessful escape attempt by another of his children, Princess <keyword id="922104" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Latifa">Latifa</keyword>.<br /><br />Haya, according to the judgment, began making inquiries about Latifa's welfare, but subsequently began to experience a "progressively more hostile climate" from the sheikh and his advisers.<br /><br />Trusted staff members were dismissed without her approval, and Haya and her representative were ejected from the ruler's court - "a huge public slap in the face", she said. She also discovered that Sheikh Mohammed had divorced her under sharia law on February 7, 2019, the anniversary of her father's death, without telling her first, the report said.<br /><br />A few weeks later, the judgment described how she claimed Sheikh Mohammed phoned her directly. "I have received bad news about you," he said, making an ambiguous reference to her relationship with one of her bodyguards, "I am starting to doubt you." Haya told the court that the call "terrified" her.<br /><br />The report said anonymous, threatening notes, and even firearms, were left in her bedroom, she claims. On March 11, 2019, a helicopter landed outside her house, and a pilot emerged and informed her that he had come to transport a single passenger to Awir, a UAE desert prison. Haya attempted to defuse the situation by laughing it off as a joke, while one of her children clung to her leg in terror, and the pilot eventually left. (Sheikh Mohammed told the court the incident was "simply a mistake".)<br /><br />The report added that by this stage Haya had resolved that her position was "wholly unsafe and untenable", and in April 2019, she arrived in the UK with her two children. She claims that the following month, Sheikh Mohammed told her directly: "You and the children will never be safe in England."<br /><br />The Guardian said shortly before Haya arrived in London, and continuing into at least the summer of 2019, the phone numbers of people around her began to appear on the database seen by the <keyword id="6389936" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="pegasus">Pegasus</keyword> project.<br /><br />Among them were Martin Smith, the CEO of <keyword id="57758" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quest">Quest</keyword>, which had for several years provided Haya with her private security. The firm's director of investigations was on the list, as was Shimon Cohen, a public relations expert and a communications adviser to Quest.<br /><br />John Gosden, a horse racing trainer and a friend of Haya, confirmed a number in the dataset belonged to him, but declined to comment.<br /><br />Also appearing in the list were phone numbers belonging to one of Haya's aides, and even a lawyer at a London firm of solicitors advising Haya. This suggests that the image was taken since the outbreak of the coronavirus, Sky News said.</p><p>David Haigh, the co-founder of the Free Latifa campaign and Detained International, told the media outlet: "We confirm that there have been several potentially significant and positive developments in the campaign.</p><p>"We do not intend to comment further at this stage. A further statement will be issued at the appropriate time".</p><p>Princess Latifa made headlines around the world when the BBC released secretly-recorded videos.</p><p>In 2018, the Emirati royal failed to escape Dubai after claiming that her father was the "most evil person" she'd ever met, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/princess-sheikha-latifa-planed-7-year-escape-from-uae-dubai-report-2018-12?_ga=2.129961932.1580035817.1621497726-1552578624.1611402583">Insider previously reported</a>.</p><p>She was caught and sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison. The princess claimed in the February videos that she was being guarded by police officers, unable to leave her home, and was being held "hostage" by her family.</p>

New photo suggests Princess Latifa is alive. This is the first sighting of the Dubai princess since videos emerged of her claiming she was being held hostage.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two of Dubai's princesses tried to flee the country, seeking freedom from their controlling father.</li><li>They were both tranquilized and detained, according to sources and their own writings cited by <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/05/08/the-fugitive-princesses-of-dubai" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New Yorker.</a></li></ul><p>Dubai princesses who tried to escape the country were tranquilized and imprisoned for long periods after they were caught, <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/05/08/the-fugitive-princesses-of-dubai" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a new report from The New Yorker.</a></p><p>The report detailed the escape attempts of two daughters of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum: Princesses Latifa and Shamsa. The report was based on interviews with people involved and looked at the communications of Latifa before and after her multiple escape attempts.</p><p>Shamsa tried to escape her family while they were staying at her father's estate the UK in 2000, but she was caught by Emirati men, brought back to the estate and returned to Dubai, the report said. She continued her efforts to flee when she was back in Dubai, seeking the help of UK authorities.</p><p>When the UK media reported the case, Shamsa lost any outside contact and was put under heavy sedation, the report said.</p><p>She was later imprisoned, the report said, and Latifa wrote that Shamsa came back from prison as "only a shell of her former self, with all the will power tortured out of her."</p><p>She said her sister was left "like a zombie" after she was given tranquilizers and antidepressants.</p><p>Shamsa tried to kill herself three times while in prison, including by trying to set fire to her own cell, the report said.</p><p>Latifa said that when her sister first came back from prison she was so used to the dark that she couldn't properly open her eyes and had to be led around by hand.</p><p>Latifa later wrote to one of her helpers, saying of Shamsa that "They give her sedatives as well as psychiatric drugs every single day."</p><p>Shamsa has not been seen in public since her escape attempt, a span of more than 20 years.</p><p>Latifa also made multiple attempts to leave the country, and wrote that freedom was "something worth dying for."</p><p>The New Yorker detailed an attempt she made in 2002, when she crept out of her mother's house at 16, in the first time she was outside alone in her life.</p><p>She was caught in her attempt to travel to neighboring Oman, taken home, and beaten, the report said.</p><p>She was then brought to a desert prison, and beaten for five hours, according to her writings cited by The New Yorker. She was beaten again, and ultimately kept in prison for 13 months.</p><p>She was brought home in July 2003, where, after a week, she exploded with rage and demanded to see Shamsa, she wrote.</p><p>Latifa said she was then tranquilized and locked up for two more years.</p><p>Latifa also said she was tranquilized during her escape attempt in 2018, when she was taken from a ship that she was trying to use to flee. She said she was returned home by helicopter and then a private jet.</p><p>She wrote that when she was detained after being caught that she was given tranquilizers three times — the third after the first two doses appeared to have no effect.</p><p>She wrote: "I want them to be embarrassed that it took the navy, several warships, armed commandos, 3 tranquilizer injections and an hour long struggle to put an unarmed pint-sized woman on a jet."</p><p>Latifa has been seen in public a few times since, saying in statements that she is now independent, and wants privacy.</p><p>The people who tried to help her escape told The New Yorker that they worried she is under duress. The New Yorker noted that she wrote before her 2018 escape attempt that "There will never be a conclusion where 'Latifa is happily with her UAE family' <em>never."</em></p><p>The wife of the Dubai leader's brother, Sheikha Bouchra bint Mohammed Al Maktoum, was also tranquilized, the report said.</p><p>Her son said that she was kidnapped onto her husband's private jet at the UK's Farnborough Airport in 2000, though UK police said that the situation was just a misunderstanding between family members, The New Yorker reported.</p><p>A source close to the Dubai royal family told The New Yorker: "They made her house prisoner, and they would just keep drugging her with tranquilizers to say that she's crazy."</p><p>Dubai denies kidnapping or mistreating any of the women.</p><p>A UK court adjudicating the divorce of Sheikh Mohammed from his wife <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-dubai-court-idUKKBN20S23C" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found</a> in 2021 that he kidnapped his two daughters and forcibly returned them to Dubai.</p>

In it Latifa said she was fleeing physical and psychological abuse at the hands of her father. </p><p>Haigh, the lawyer for Latifa, told Business Insider that Haya's lawsuit will draw attention back onto the human rights abuses in the United Arab Emirates (UAE.)</p><p>"It's good news for Latifa, as it's thrown what happened to her into a court which isn't corrupt," he said. Dubai held a 'gender balance' awards, and every single winner is a man

<p>To show their appreciation, star Vin Diesel gifted Dubai princess Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum with one of the black Dodge Challengers that have become synonymous with his "Dominic Toretto" character, <a href="http://www.arabianbusiness.com/hollywood-star-gifts-muscle-car-dubai-princess-548753.html">according to Arabian Business</a>. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The princess posted a photo of the car on Instagram. Diesel also included a signed CD, a postcard, and a handwritten note that read, "To my extended family in Dubai, thank you for the love...your friend always."</span></p>

<p>Sheikha Noura bint Ibrahim al-Khalifa was one of the two police officers acquitted by the court of appeals on December 23, Hameed Mulla, a lawyer for the doctors told Reuters by telephone from Manama. He said he plans to submit a request to appeal against the verdict for a second time.</p>
<p>The government's Information Affairs Authority (IAA)confirmed Sheikha Noura was acquitted on Monday by the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court but did not say what charges she had faced or provide other details. It said the court upheld a previous acquittal verdict on July 1.</p>
<p>Bahrain's ruling al Khalifa family includes hundreds of princes and princesses, many of whom hold jobs in the public sector. According to media reports, Sheikha Noura is about 29 years old.</p>
<p>The alleged torture took place in 2011 when the U.S.-allied kingdom was convulsed by unrest following the start in February that year of mass protests led by majority Shi'ites demanding democratic change in the Sunni-led monarchy.</p>
<p>Local media said the appeals court upheld the verdict due to lack of evidence.</p>
<p>In January, Nawaf Hamza, head of the Public Prosecution's Special Investigation Unit, told Reuters that Sheikha Noura was charged with using "torture, force and threats against the victims Zahra al-Sammak and Kholoud al-Durazi to make them confess to a crime." She denied all the charges.</p>
<p>An international human rights commission has said 35 people died during the unrest and two months of martial law that followed. The opposition puts that number at more than 80.</p>
<p>The commission headed by prominent Egyptian-American jurist Cherif Bassiouni to investigate the unrest and abuses during martial law said security forces used widespread and excessive force, including torture, to extract confessions.</p>
<p>The government says it has taken steps to address the brutality of security forces by dismissing those responsible and introducing cameras at police stations to monitor abuses. But activists say abuses continue and several police officers were acquitted by the court despite torture claims.</p>
<p>Bahrain drew criticism from abroad for arrests of doctors and nurses during and after the uprising.</p>
<p>Since March 2011, at least 60 health professionals have been tried and sentenced to jail terms of up to 15 years on charges including attempting to bring down the government, according rights group Physicians for Human Rights.</p>
<p>Most appealed and the majority had their sentences reduced or quashed.</p>
<p>U.S.-based Human Rights First said Bahrain needs to hold those responsible for abuses accountable.</p>
<p>"It's sort of surprising that the authorities haven't pressed harder to secure convictions for those who tortured the medics," said Brian Dooley, of Human Rights First.</p>
<p>"Bahrain's international reputation is dominated by the image of it being a place which tortured its doctors after they treated injured protesters, and then failed to punish those who ordered and carried out the torture."</p>
