As expected, his extensive English vocabulary will set the mood onstage. The former diplomat will be featuring in a comedy show ‘One Mic Stand’ on Amazon Prime. The three-minute long video will air on the OTT platform on November 15.  "Daddy, please. I can't entertain this! Pardon my recalcitrance," Tharoor said in the snippet. The R-word went over the heads of a lot of people. Recalcitrance refers to the quality of being unwilling to obey rules. "Anything that I say is assumed by people to be more complicated than it really is," he says at one point, referring to people complaining that his English is too hard to understand. Within six hours, the video post on Twitter fetched over 217,000 views, as per IANS. The ‘One Mic Stand’ series sets celebrities against professional comedians before a live audience. Shashi Tharoor faced off with popular comedian Kunal Kamra. New Delhi, As we gloat over reports how the US and European countries have started to tame the social media platforms in regard to anti-trust market practices, users privacy and the spread of fake news, <keyword id="1781932" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Big-Tech">Big Tech</keyword> firms had their own iota of controversies in India in 2020, generating enough political heat in the process. The biggest controversy came in August when the Wall Street Journal reported on the blatant biases of <keyword id="736869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook-India">Facebook India</keyword>'s team, headed by their <keyword id="5729070" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-policy-chief">public policy chief</keyword> for the country, Ankhi Das. The report alleged that the top leadership at Facebook's India office refused to apply the company's own rules to politicians from the ruling party, despite clear violations of Facebook's policies against incitement to violence, hate speech and misinformation. Following the report, the Congress raised the issue of what it calls "unholy nexus" of the ruling BJP with Facebook and WhatsApp. Shashi Tharoor, the head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT), called on Facebook to respond to allegations of ignoring hate speech in favour of the ruling party. Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also wrote a hard-hitting letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, blaming the Facebook India management of alleged bias against people supporting the right-of-centre ideology. The minister said that as a <keyword id="10498524" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="transnational-digital-platform">transnational digital platform</keyword>, Facebook must not only be fair and neutral, but also "visibly seen to be so, to users of diverse beliefs and ideologies". Later, deposing before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on personal data protection Bill 2019, Das was asked how much funds are spent by the social media giant on data safety. The Facebook executives were also questioned on the quantum of its revenue as well as the profit they are making in India. A coalition of 41 civil rights groups also demanded that Facebook India should immediately place its public policy head Ankhi Das on a leave of absence pending a full audit of the company and an investigation into her statements as reported in The Wall Street Journal. The political heat resulted in Das quitting the company in October "to pursue her interest in public service". Another WSJ report this month alleged that Facebook discussed banning Bajrang Dal and termed it a dangerous organisation but did not act considering the safety of the employees. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter and said: "Further confirmation that BJP-RSS control Facebook in India." However, no stern action was taken on Facebook. Micro-blogging platform Twitter stirred a major controversy in the second half of the year when it showed Ladakh as part of China. Twitter had to apologise to a parliamentary panel in a letter, stating that it will fix the issue of geo-tagging Ladakh as part of China and Ladakh will be added as a region administered by India as a union territory. The micro-blogging platform sent the letter to the panel's chairperson Meenakshi Lekhi and apologised for the geo-tag error. A joint committee of Parliament led by BJP MP Lekhi which has 20 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha, had issued summons to Twitter, seeking an explanation in form of an affidavit. Taking strong exception to the "misrepresentation" of India's map, the government also wrote a letter to the Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, saying that any attempt by the platform to disrespect the sovereignty and integrity of India, which is also reflected by the maps, was totally unacceptable. In a separate incident, after courting controversy for wrongly showing Jammu and Kashmir as part of China, Twitter said it resolved this particular geo-tag issue. Several netizens also asked the IT minister and the government to take action against <keyword id="749437" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter-India">Twitter India</keyword> as the controversy erupted amid India's border standoff with China in Ladakh. Facebook and Twitter stir up hornet's nest in India in 2020

In a landmark judgment, <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s Supreme Court has decriminalised <keyword id="34262" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="homosexuality">homosexuality</keyword>, striking down a colonial era law from 1861, saying homosexuality is not an offense. Upholding the rights of individuals, a 5-judge bench led by India’s Chief Justice <keyword id="6355251" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="dipak-misra">Dipak Misra</keyword> took a unanimous decision with the chief justice saying the “LGBT Community has the same rights as of any ordinary citizen. Respect for each others rights, and others are supreme humanity. Criminalising gay sex is irrational and indefensible,” the chief justice reportedly observed. The court has observed:

 The <keyword id="6362797" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="section-377">section 377</keyword>, which dates back to 1861, had criminalised sexual activities that are "against the order of nature." The law has been used to criminalise homosexuality in the country, often impinging on the rights of the LGBTQ community in India. A five-person bench headed by India’s Chief Justice Dipak Misra pronounced its judgment following a hearing in July on a string of petitions that had challenged the law as unconstitutional that violated the fundamental rights of citizens including the right to equality and right to freedom and expression. The right to privacy verdict of the Supreme Court earlier this year is also likely to be a significant factor that will influence the court’s decision. In 2013, India’s Supreme Court had overturned an earlier ruling by the <keyword id="6355014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-high-court">Delhi High Court</keyword> which had decriminalised section 377 in 2009. The Indian government which had been given the option of enacting legislation that would have scrapped this law, had left the decision to the “wisdom” of India’s Supreme Court. The decision marks a key moment for both India’s Supreme Court as well as its outgoing Chief Justice Misra who will pass on reigns to Justice Ranjan Gogoi next month. In 2001, Netherlands became the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-is-same-sex-marriage-legal-world-2017-11">first</a> country to recognise same sex marriages. Same sex marriages are now legally permitted in over 20 countries including Australia, the US, New Zealand, Germany, and Malta, among others. Section 377 The section 377 of the Indian Penal Code is a colonial era law that criminalised sexual activities that are "against the order of nature” and was punishable with life imprisonment. Specifically, the language of the 377 states that “Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.” While the law has rarely been enforced, gay and civil right activists have long argued the law was used to harass members of India’s queer community. The 377 itself traces its root to the Buggery Act of 1533, enacted during the reign of King Henry VIII that criminalised and sodomy and bestality. Moment Of Pride The decision has been hailed as a historic win for the LGBTQ rights in India and Twitter as abuzz with celebratory tweets from celebrities and politicians alike:

Section 377 Verdict: India’s top court decriminalises homosexuality in landmark verdict

The country prepares to celebrate its 69th independence day this weekend, and let’s not forget this is an annual affair that lacks the nostalgia and the requisite passion. Except for BJP drumming up a bit on nationality and religiosity, India has largely been a simmering nation which has had its identity, split into half, mostly vertically. We are a country without a mission, and a mirror image of what we were in the past. 
Set aside all the discourses on our great epics, our oldest universities and a lot of pride that we take in saying we are a country of early civilizations. Yes, we do have everything to be proud of, under our belt but what the nation seriously lacks today is the wind under its wings. 
After all, a country that celebrates its post-independence identity, grudgingly giving into the fact that we were a nation, filthy rich but largely disintegrated, much closed in our own cocoons and the knowledge that we held since ages. Nothing prepared us for the British rule that stealthily crept in and made India home for centuries. 
 
The British entered this supermarket called India, with no-cash-only-kind mode of payment, and plundered at the resources the country had. Or, so we would like to believe. This is what gets the heart of every nationalist beating. The image is too innocent to be true. 
 
So when the Congress MP Shashi Tharoor spoke of Britain owing reparations to India, there was a thunderous applause from all over, more so from the 31% Indians who voted BJP’s passion for ‘restoring the bygone glory’ of the country. And then of course, the NRIs who left India to chase rainbow dreams, whose image of India is much dipped in honey like that of an impeccable Saas-Bahu serial of clean and innocent as that of Karan Johar’s films, clinging on to the rich frames of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, India indeed is a land made of their dreams. 
 
Their voices had suddenly found an argument. This was like some sort of a permanent cure for the stuttering the collective Indians had. The Diaspora was delirious, and the inlanders were even more so. 
 
But, actually looking at it, some part of this may be true as well. Experts would put India’s collective share in world economy at the beginning of 18th century stood at 23%. Seduced by this, the Brits courted it. When they left the country for good, the share of India in the world economy was a miserly 4%. What a fall! It was just short of entering the negative zone. Had it been so, India would still be more rabid than what it is now. 
 
It was a wounded civilization which had lost its sense of pride, identity, reality and plurality. Torn at the arm with a share forming Pakistan, and then at the rib with another share forming Bangladesh, India was truly insufferable. But, was this something that the British caused, or would it have happened in a matter of time is for everyone to contemplate? 
 
Reparation is a very consoling word. But, how do you value ‘reparations’ to something that happened centuries ago? What would the parameter be? Money or knowledge? Wound or the power of healing? In discourses or materialistic means? 
 
Without arriving at this parameter, it would be a fond thought, much like remembering one’s own childhood which is filled with pink memories, but the reality may well have been out of perception or different from what one knows or remembers. 
 
Historians have not ruled out the fact that Britain owes no reparations to India. Fact remains that India was taken over by many other rulers from different faiths which changed the fabric of the society while also making some hay while sun shone. So, why single out the British? 
In fact, when the British began to tighten their clutches over the country through East India Company, they also ensured the country developed as far as the knowledge is concerned. One thing that the Brits take credit for is the railways that they laid in a country that didn’t even plan for proper roads. Today the railways is the biggest employer, and runs the most complicated railway system with least errors in the world. This could be India’s take away from the British rule. 
 
Industrialisation, urban planning, education, uniform system of education and political awareness – and finally, unification of Indian states – these could have been a distant dream had India not come together under the British rule. 
 
Democracy that India borrowed from British is priceless. But, it’s a pity today, India stands at cross roads between its belief in democracy and somewhat inclined towards authoritarian values, such as belief in monarchy or a single ruler. 
 
Should India worry about reparations? Not yet. But, probably the ball is set in motion. Depends on whose court it lands in, next.
