Xiaomi’s market share has remained flat and it continues to occupy the second position with a 16.7% market share in Q3 2024, up from 16.6% in Q3 2023. Samsung has recorded a decline in its market share, reporting a 15.8% market share in Q3 2024, down from 17.2% recorded in Q3 2023. Indian smartphone shipments up 3% in Q3 – Vivo leads the market but Samsung wins the value game

Indian smartphone shipments decline by 2% in Q2 2024, Xiaomi retakes the throne but Samsung leads in terms of value

The Mahindra Group company posted a net profit of Rs 493.9 crore in the year-ago period, according to an exchange filing. Revenue rose by 3.49 per cent to Rs 13,313.2 crore in the second quarter of 2024-25 compared to Rs 12,863.9 crore in the same quarter of 2023-24. "Other income includes gain on sale of property of Rs 4,502 million which comprises of freehold land and its related buildings along with the furniture &amp; fixtures sold for a consideration of Rs 5,350 million, receivable over a period of four years along with interest of 8.2 per cent p.a," the company filing said. Sequentially, net profit rose by 46.81 per cent and revenue by 2.36 per cent. "We continue to progress on our strategic improvement efforts even as the overall IT services industry has remained soft. "We have focused on strengthening client relationships and expanding the partner ecosystem while maintaining a sharp focus on operational excellence through project Fortius, which has resulted in an expansion of margins for the third sequential quarter," Tech Mahindra CEO Mohit Joshi said. The CEO unveiled Project Fortius in April, a three-year plan to achieve a 15 per cent operating margin with a focus on organic growth. "This quarter we see consistent performance around increasing deal wins, <keyword id="19965932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-growth" source="keywords">revenue growth</keyword>, cost optimisation and steady free cash flow generation as we continue our journey towards FY27 stated targets. In line with our capital allocation policy the board has declared an interim dividend of Rs 15 per share," Tech Mahindra CFO Rohit Anand said. The company's TCV (<keyword id="23580531" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Total-Contract-Value" source="keywords">Total Contract Value</keyword>), or net new deal wins, stood at USD 603 million in the second quarter of FY25. Joshi further said the company is on the right path for a long-term sustainable transformation, with its leading indicators moving in the right direction, and its 'Scale at Speed' narrative resonating in the market. "We have invested in strengthening the capabilities in the focus service lines by broadening the leadership and investing in technical specializations. "We continue to invest in strengthening our fresher hiring program, building the right mindset and future skilling and associates, by building capabilities in AI-first and cloud-first skill sets," he told reporters. Investments shall continue in creating and sustaining an outcome-driven learning organisation and cultivating a high-performance culture based on the pillars of simplifying, clarifying, innovating and driving a high-performance orientation, he added. This year could be volatile because we are in the turnaround phase, Joshi said. "I am confident, however, that the platform is being set for a long-term, valuable franchise thanks to a high-calibre and united leadership team and a clearly articulated strategic plan," Joshi said. Thus far this year, domestic gold prices have grown by 23%, outperforming benchmark indices like Nifty and Sensex by a mile, which have gone up by 9.85% and 8.86%, respectively. The growth in gold loan disbursal rates month on month this year could also put Nifty and Sensex’s growth to shame. In just September 2024, gold loans grew an astounding 51%, up from 40.9% in August, 30.5% in June, and just 14.8% in March. <h2>Hey, wait up for me, says <keyword id="23953567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="las" source="keywords">LAS</keyword></h2>In lockstep with the elder, gold loan sibling, advances against shares and bonds have also been inching up since 2022. Data from RBI (Reserve Bank of India) notes that as of September 2022, the outstanding quantum of loans that were taken against shares (LAS) and bonds stood at Rs 7,397.94 crores. This inched up to Rs 7,764 crore in September 2023. Come 2024, and it looked like this was LAS’ time to shine. Loans swiftly skyrocketed, with outstanding loans in this category going up from Rs 8,492 crore in March 2022 to a staggering Rs 9,546 crore at the end of September 2024. Naturally, the smoke of LAS has its fire in the record inflows that Indians are pouring into the stock market and mutual funds month on month. Per AMFI (<keyword id="20090034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="keywords">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India), the net AUM (assets under management) of India’s mutual fund industry grew to Rs 67,25,614.61 crores in October 2024, up from Rs 67,09,259.24 crores in September 2024. Even the number of retail mutual fund folios, which include equity, hybrid, and solution-oriented mutual funds, burgeoned to 17,23,52,296 in October, as compared to 16,81,61,366 in September. The same goes for stock investments in India, where the number of new demat accounts that are added every month just simply refuses to climb down. As of last month, total demat accounts in the country stood at 17.9 crore, which is more than the entire population of full-fledged nations like Japan (12.45 crore), Russia (14.38 crore), and Bangladesh (17.3 crore). In fact, since February this year, the monthly growth of LAS has been hitting double digits. From 11.3% in March to 21.6% in May to 26.8% in August, growth in LAS has been exceptional, hitting 22.9% in September this year. For context, monthly growth in the LAS segment was at a mere 5% in September 2023. <h2>What's driving the growth?</h2>It's a win-win for both the bank and the customer. Customers love them because LAS is available at a lower interest rate compared to unsecured personal loans. You can get a loan at an interest rate of anywhere between 9 and 12% by pledging your gold, MF units, or shares. Compare this to over 10-28% rates, which is the range where unsecured personal loans charge interest. Banks love <keyword id="827883" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="secured-loans" source="Orion">secured loans</keyword> since they are well-secured. In case you default on paying back, the bank can sell off your gold, shares, or mutual fund units to recover the amount. This takes a lot of stress off the banks, which are already dealing with secured loans’ riskier sibling-unsecured lending. High NPAs (non-performing assets) and non-payments in the unsecured borrowing space have already put RBI on red alert, which is why the apex bank is tightening the screws on unsecured lending, which was well on its way to becoming a ticking time bomb. As a result, credit growth has moderated to 12.8% YoY in October, as against the 19.3% rise recorded in the year-ago period. Yet it's not like the banks won't feel the heat. Analysts at Nomura note that personal loan delinquencies in India that have been overdue by over 90 days rose to 5.1% in the last financial year, as opposed to just 3.9% in the year prior. <h2>How does it work?</h2>Both these loans work on a similar principle: Your loan amount is equal to a certain percentage of the actual market value of your asset. This is known as the <keyword id="20051485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ltv" source="keywords">LTV</keyword> (loan-to-value ratio). In the case of gold and debt mutual funds, RBI mandates that this LTV be about 75-80%. So, for every Rs 100 of gold or debt mutual fund unit you pledge, your maximum loan amount cannot exceed Rs 80. If you pledge gold, which has a market value of Rs 10 lakh, you can take a loan of up to Rs 8,00,000. In the case of shares and mutual fund units, this limit is set at 50%. So, your shares worth Rs 5,00,000 can only get you a loan worth Rs 2,50,000. But the bright side? You can continue earning returns on your investments and pay interest only on the amount you use, since this loan works as an overdraft facility. <h2>Super safe, you say?</h2>Interest rates on both of these loans are very much dependent on the market value of the asset, which wildly fluctuates on a day-to-day basis. So, in case the value of your asset falls, you’ll have to keep a margin or more of the same asset in order to continue with the loan and maintain the LTV balance. Failure to do so could mean the bank can even sell off your asset. Says financial planner Nema Chaya Buch. “Yes, LAS offers easy availability of funds since these loans come with a lower interest rate as compared to personal loans. Also, you continue to earn average returns of 10–13% on your equity investments. But the downside is, in case of emergency, those pledged securities cannot be sold. Also, if the equity market goes down, then the bank may ask for additional collateral. Raghvendra Nath, MD, Ladderup Wealth Management notes that taking a LAS is best when the value of your securities has appreciated significantly. “This allows you to maximize the loan amount based on your collateral while also addressing financial needs without having to liquidate your investment portfolio. However, there are notable disadvantages to consider. The market risk is significant; a substantial decline in market value could lead to margin calls, which may incur fees and charges if there are delays or prepayments, ultimately increasing the effective cost of borrowing. Furthermore, failure to make timely payments could result in the loss of your assets.”. Umesh Mohanan, ED &amp; CEO, of Indel Money, cautions that one should have a sufficient quantity of gold to get the loan amount one wants. "According to the current RBI rules, the loan applicant/borrower can draw up to 75% of the total market value of the collateral/gold jewellery. So, always carry a sufficient quantity of gold based on one’s loan requirement. “The most important thing is that the valuation of the gold depends on the purity of the gold. If the borrower pledges gold with higher purity, such as 24 carats or 22 carats, he will get the maximum loan amount," he adds.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Generative AI's initial hype in advertising is now tempered with growing skepticism.</li><li>Still, major agencies like Publicis and WPP are planning significant AI investments.</li></ul>Two years after OpenAI's ChatGPT and other chatbots launched, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-has-marketing-problem-people-dont-like-hearing-about-it-2024-8">advertising community's excitement over generative AI</a> has come down to earth.The shift was evident at New York's Advertising Week, a four-day gathering this week that organizers expected 17,000 to attend. On panels and in off-stage conversations, industry insiders seemed to talk as much about the limitations as the promises of AI."I think for the first time I'm starting to hear skepticism around AI," said Ashwin Navin, CEO and cofounder of Samba TV, a TV measurement firm.In an industry that loves to show it's early to adopt new tech, it's been easy for practitioners to claim they're using generative AI to do things that aren't really new, like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-artificial-intelligence-is-used-in-marketing-strategy-2024-5">basic personalizing</a> and targeting ads, he said. "What's the marketing spin versus what's new for marketers to evaluate?"Disciples of generative AI say it can take the pain out of some of the repetitive tasks involved in analyzing data, buying ads, and matching ads to specific groups of people. The major advertising agency groups — including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ad-group-publicis-lays-out-300-million-ai-ambitions-2024-1">Publicis</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.marketingdive.com/news/havas-AI-future-investment-integrated-communications/719569/">Havas</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://adage.com/article/agency-news/wpp-invest-318-million-ai-annually-mark-read-says/2539231">WPP</a> — have all pledged to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in AI over the next few years. Last year, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.salesforce.com/news/stories/generative-ai-for-marketing-research/">Salesforce</a> survey showed about three-quarters of marketers were or planned to use generative AI.But there's been a growing narrative in the industry that some of the new AI tech isn't much of a leap forward from what was already available."There's a potential for a generative AI solution to just be a solution in search of a problem," said Andrew Lipsman, an independent media, advertising, and commerce analyst. "An ad buying user interface is usually just a few fields of information to toggle through to set up your campaign. I'm not sure that's something that really needs to be further solved."Zaid Al-Qassab, the global CEO of advertising agency M&amp;C Saatchi, said in a recent interview with Business Insider that AI can be a distraction for clients. "The real question is, what's your business challenge?"Al-Qassab said he sees plenty of promise in the tech. After he started in the role in May, he made a set of AI tools used in one part of the company available to everyone. One of the features pulls from a bunch of data sources to evaluate how people feel about a brand. He's also optimistic about AI's ability to generate ideas for ad campaigns, personalize ads beyond just changing the recipient's name, and save time writing client briefs.But other things, like AI project management tools, can't replace the value of a face-to-face client meeting with an agency rep, he said."It can't represent you," he said.Then there's the question of creativity. Some advertisers like Google and Toys "R" Us have been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-has-marketing-problem-people-dont-like-hearing-about-it-2024-8">met with backlash</a> when using or referencing AI in their ads, often because of the fear among audiences that AI could replace jobs and sap human creativity.Generally, in conversations with seven industry insiders around Advertising Week, the areas most frequently mentioned as having promise with AI were improving targeting and ad creative, but their potential was far from being fully realized.<h2 id="446c0bf2-a9d9-45f1-bb85-d25f6b2a1a76">Some uses of AI show some promise, but have limitations</h2>Early on, it was easy to see how AI could cut costs by doing some rote tasks. But people in the field say for it to transform advertising, they expect it to do more, like improve the quality of ad messaging and targeting."Let's not just think about how to cut costs; let's use it to do better storytelling," Samba's Navin said.That's starting to happen. Media companies like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nbcuniversal-using-emotional-targeting-new-gen-ai-driven-ads-2024-3">NBCUniversal</a> use AI to analyze topics in video content so advertisers can run contextual ads around that content. NBCU said ads performed up to 49% better this way.Another area AI is starting to work in is finding new potential customers. Adtech firm DoubleVerify brought a client, Diageo, on stage at Advertising Week to share its success using DoubleVerify's AI tool to help sell its spirits like Ketel One vodka while keeping costs down.Speaking on another panel, Nick Fairbairn, VP of marketing at finance app Chime, said AI helped him find unexpected media outlets to target people for a new product launch.That said, even when AI tools have had positive results, ad insiders often also spoke of their limitations.Joshua Nafman, VP of data and operations at Diageo, said that while DoubleVerify's AI tool helped boost sales, Diageo had to roll out the process one brand, ad campaign, and market at a time."We started joking, it was not test and learn, it's retest and relearn," Nafman said.Fairbairn said he sees an opportunity to use AI to match ads to individuals, but added that it was early days."I want to make sure it doesn't just look like the same ad with a different word," he said.Though enthusiasm about AI was tempered in the industry at this year's Advertising Week, there wasn't a widespread abandonment of the tech. AI-focused panels were as well attended as ever.Some also see opportunity in the friction.Adtech company LiveRamp announced a pair of AI partnerships to help marketers find the right AI company for a given problem.LiveRamp CEO Scott Howe said that while AI is a hot industry topic, many marketers are unsure how to use it."In some respects, they're more scared about it because they think there's downside, because they don't understand what the upside is," Howe said. "We feel there's a gap in the industry that we can help fill."

Advertisers are scrutinizing the value of AI tools as some early efforts fall flat

<ul class="summary-list"><li>College graduates have stronger social lives than non-college-educated Americans, a survey found.</li><li>College can foster connections and offer financial benefits that can boost one's social life.</li></ul>In recent years, many young people have questioned whether the benefits of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-1-in-4-americans-think-going-college-worth-it-2024-5">college degree</a> are worth the cost of tuition. According to a new survey, college graduates appear to have a clear edge in one area: their social lives.The Survey Center on American Life — a nonprofit organization backed by the right-wing think tank the American Enterprise Institute — published a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/disconnected-places-and-spaces/">report</a> in August based on a survey of more than 6,500 US adults conducted in March and April. The respondents were asked about their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/longevity-antiaging-friendship-social-interaction-relationships-2023-9">social interactions</a> and participation in their communities.The survey found that 24% of non-college-educated Americans had no close friends and 17% had at least six close friends. Among Americans with at least a bachelor's degree, 45% had at least six close friends, and 10% had none.Question after question, the same social divide continued to emerge in the survey. For example, compared to Americans without a degree, college graduates were much more likely to say they had friends who could help them move, give them a ride, take them to a doctor's appointment, or offer them a place to stay.Across all education levels, Americans reported having significantly fewer friends than they did in a similar Gallup survey conducted in 1990, according to the Survey Center report. However, the widespread <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hanging-out-book-sheila-liming-social-isolation-2023-3">decline in socialization</a> in recent decades has been steeper for people without a college degree. "Americans with fewer years of formal education participate less often in community life, are less civically active, have fewer close friends, and have less social support than those with four-year college degrees," the authors wrote. "Increasingly, the ability to cultivate strong social support is a privilege reserved for the college-educated, rather than an ordinary feature of American life," they added.The Survey Center report provides additional evidence for something several experts have been saying in recent years: Americans <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/death-casual-fringe-friendships-gen-z-sad-jobs-alone-2024-2">aren't making friends</a> like they used to and are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weekends-feel-different-post-pandemic-isolation-loneliness-economy-tiktokers-2024-1">spending more time alone</a>. Last year, US Surgeon General <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-culture-social-individualism-loneliness-epidemic-2024-1">Vivek Murthy</a> said the US was facing an "epidemic of loneliness and isolation" and raised concerns about the physical and mental health consequences of this development.Declining participation in social institutions like marriage, insufficient access to public amenities like community centers, and financial challenges are among the reasons Americans without degrees could be having a particularly hard time making friends.To be sure, there's disagreement among experts about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/there-is-no-loneliness-epidemic-mental-health-2024-4">how much</a> Americans' social lives have changed in recent decades and the primary causes of this shift.<h2 id="687049e2-f7c3-4e53-8ad7-d9b9ceff8c38">It's getting harder for people without degrees to make friends</h2>In the past, marriage, religious organizations, and labor unions were key to providing social support for Americans. However, in recent decades, people have become less likely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-are-moving-less-social-demographic-changes-2022-8">marry</a>, join a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/union-households-pay-bump-median-wealth-fewer-race-gaps-2024-3">labor union</a>, and regularly attend a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-the-nones-more-americans-religiously-unaffiliated-who-are-they-2024-1">place of worship</a>. This decline has been much steeper for Americans with lower levels of education, according to the Survey Center report.Additionally, non-college-educated Americans were also less likely to be members of nonreligious community groups like hobby or activity groups, community groups or neighborhood associations, and sports leagues or workout groups. In recent decades, Americans with degrees have continued to join these groups at "relatively high" rates, while those without degrees have become "increasingly unattached," according to the report."When all of these things start to come together, you're seeing the bottom fallout of these institutions that historically have provided a grounding of participation and connection in American life," Sam Pressler, coauthor of the report and practitioner fellow at the University of Virginia's Karsh Institute of Democracy, told Business Insider.At the same time, Pressler said there's a "pay to play" system in many Americans' social lives. Public spaces that have the potential to foster social connections often come with a financial cost, and this can benefit college graduates, who tend to earn <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/emp/chart-unemployment-earnings-education.htm">higher wages</a> than <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/young-men-working-less-no-college-degree-student-loan-debt-2024-5">people without degrees</a>."You go to a coffee shop or you go to a bar or a restaurant, those things have dollar signs attached to them," he said. "You go and join a gym, you're going to Equinox or even the YMCA, that costs money."Even in free public spaces like libraries, community centers, and parks, the survey found that non-college-educated Americans were less likely to use them as a social gathering place. Pressler said one explanation for this could be that Americans with degrees were more likely to live in areas with extensive and high-quality public spaces and community groups."If you are out of those traditional structures, you have to do so much more work to schedule time with friends, to build relationships," he said. "All of the work gets put onto you."Additionally, people without a college degree may also be more likely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/side-hustle-recommendations-jobs-to-try-this-year-concerts-surveys-2024-3">work multiple jobs</a>, or have roles with unpredictable hours, Pressler said. For example, he pointed to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gig-economy-trends-workers-delivery-ride-hailing-apps-uber-doordash-2023-7">rise of gig work</a> in recent years. Driving during nights and weekends — prime social hours — can be the most profitable for an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-uber-and-lyft-driver-who-only-drives-at-night-2022-7">Uber or Lyft driver</a> who's looking to earn some extra cash."If you don't know what your schedule is going to be in a week or two weeks if you are working several jobs, it's very hard to imagine being able to plan to participate in community or spend time with family and build those relationships," Pressler said.For some people, the workplace can provide another opportunity to make friends. In 2022, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-working-from-home-office-misses-friends-loneliness-remote-2024-6">over half</a> of respondents told the Survey Center that they'd met a close friend through their work or a spouse's work. However, college graduates were more likely to have done so.<h2 id="8fcf4dc4-64b7-407d-b2ef-24e5ba206c58">Going to college can be a "supercharger of relationships"</h2>Of course, some of the social benefits of a college degree date back to the connections fostered on campuses. Pressler said the college experience can be a "supercharger of relationships" and that people who don't pursue a degree — and go straight into the workforce for example — may not have the same social opportunities.Once students graduate, many of them move to cities where they can continue to build upon their college connections."You have potentially the leisure time and the discretionary income to participate in community life with other people who have college degrees and you're also involved and meshed in these networks of your fellow alum," Pressler said.On the whole, Pressler said that he thinks the financial and social benefits of a college degree have increased in recent decades, adding that the decline in some middle-class jobs — driven by factors that include <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-men-working-less-recessions-employment-productivity-2024-4">globalization and recessions</a> — is partly responsible for this.When young people decide whether to go to college, Pressler said he thinks many of them place significant value on the social benefits that can come with a college education. He said this is among the reasons many colleges' recruiting efforts — in an attempt to attract students — emphasize the clubs, Greek life, and sports on campus.But despite the social benefits, Pressler said this doesn't mean a college degree is for everyone."I don't think the answer is to necessarily get more young adults to go to college because of the adverse social consequences that we highlighted in our report," he said. "Rather, we should be aiming to mitigate — and, ideally, eliminate — the educational divide in civic life." While Pressler said there is no "silver bullet" solution for Americans' overall friendship decline — and the larger decline for people without degrees — he said there are several solutions worth considering.For example, he said housing and neighborhood policies could be better used to promote connection in communities."This could include everything from housing policies that promote more middle and social housing, to neighborhood policies that provide micro-grants for block parties, community dinners, sports leagues, and block clean-ups that bring neighbors together," he said.Did you go to college in large part for the expected social benefits?
