<ul class="summary-list"><li>Carson Pickett on Tuesday became the first woman with a limb difference to play for the <keyword id="11931671" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="uswnt" source="Orion">USWNT</keyword>. </li><li><keyword id="14334100" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="shaquem-griffin" source="Orion">Shaquem Griffin</keyword>, an <keyword id="11897660" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nfl" source="Orion">NFL</keyword> player with a limb difference of his own, celebrated her achievement. </li></ul><p>Days after Carson Pickett became the first woman with a limb difference to appear on the US Women's National Soccer Team, NFL linebacker Shaquem Griffin, who has a limb difference of his own, celebrated her accomplishment. </p><p>Griffin, who is currently a free agent, told Insider that Pickett's appearance was "a big moment in <keyword id="11893855" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports" source="Orion">sports</keyword> and also history." </p><p>"She's definitely sharing more light for us athletes and setting a great example for more athletes to go after their dreams," Griffin said. </p><p>Carson, a 28-year-old defender who plays for the North Carolina Courage, was born missing part of her left arm. </p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/USWNT/status/1541958029033103361">The USWNT tweeted</a> on Tuesday that Pickett was "the first-ever player with a limb difference to earn a #USWNT cap."</p><p>"Kick It Like Pickett," <a href="https://twitter.com/USWNT/status/1541958029033103361">the team said</a> ahead of the game against Colombia.</p><p>Griffin celebrated Pickett's feat on Twitter Wednesday.</p><p>"Making a difference one sport at a time," he wrote, attached to a clip of Pickett during the game.</p><p>"We shouldn't be left out because of what we don't have or be limited to what we can do," Griffin later told Insider of Pickett's USWNT appearance. </p><p>"Don't worry about if I have one hand or two hands, just worry about my abilities and what I am doing on the field," the linebacker said. "The question is: 'Are you going to work your butt off for it?' That is what it's always about."</p><p>Griffin, a twin, was born with amniotic band syndrome, causing the fingers on his left hand to never fully develop, <a href="https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/page/bodyissue2013griffins/central-florida-shaquill-shaquem-griffin-three-hands-nfl-dreams-espn-magazine">ESPN reported in 2013</a>. When Griffin was 4 years old, his parents chose to have his hand amputated due to pain from the syndrome.</p><p>As an adult, Griffin has made a career in the NFL, spending two years on the Seattle Seahawks, followed by one season with the Miami Dolphins. Griffin has also become a motivational speaker and an NFL ambassador. </p><p>But he said the negativity around athletes with limb differences has to change, pointing to commentators who address them as "athletes with limb differences" rather than just "athletes."</p><p>"They're bringing negativity to some athletes who may take it in and think, 'You know what, they're right. I'm not going to do this,'" he said. "Until that ends, we won't be considered the same."</p><h2>Pickett called her USWNT appearance a "dream come true"</h2><p>Pickett did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on her first USWNT appearance, but <a href="https://twitter.com/Cars_Pickett16/status/1542026496037908481?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1542026496037908481%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fpeople.com%2Fsports%2Fcarson-pickett-makes-history-as-first-player-with-limb-difference-to-play-for-uswnt%2F">she said on Twitter</a> Wednesday that it was a "dream come true."</p><p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb-z2DfJ2aR/?hl=en">In April, she told her Instagram followers about her limb difference</a> in honor of Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness month.</p><p>"While I know that I am confident and comfortable with showing my arm, I know there are so many people in the world who aren't," she wrote. "I hope to encourage anyone who struggles with their limb difference to not be ashamed of who they are."</p><p>"Let's all try to love ourselves no matter what we look like and let's all be kind to each other above all else," she added. "Different people are my kind of people. The world needs more of that."</p><h2>"It's a small line between wanting to give up on yourself and wanting to keep going," Griffin said</h2><p>Griffin, meanwhile, hopes to inspire the next generation of athletes with limb differences and "see more going after it."</p><p>"It's about having the mental mindset to be able to push when things get tough," Griffin said. "It's a small line between wanting to give up on yourself and wanting to keep going." </p><p>He said having him, Pickett, and others with limb differences in major sports gives people "somebody to look up to."</p><p>Speaking to "anybody listening," Griffin said, "I want you to understand that you should always keep going no matter if it's hard or not. You made it that far, and there's a reason that you made it, so keep on fighting."</p>

Spanos Berberian is a co-trustee of the Spanos family trust along with Dean Spanos.</p><p>In her petition, Spanos Berberian names a potential buyer: Bezos. She called the Chargers "a perfect opportunity" for Bezos, given his previously reported interest in buying an NFL team. </p><p>It's the fourth NFL team Bezos has been linked to in the last three years.</p><p>The reports of Bezos eyeing NFL ownership date back to 2018, when <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/amazon-founder-jeff-bezos-interested-in-owning-nfl-team-has-strong-support-among-current-owners/">CBS Sports reported</a> that Bezos was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-reportedly-interested-buying-nfl-team-2019-11">considering buying an NFL team</a>. Soon after, the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/11/14/bezos-interested-seahawks-maybe-nfl-interested-bezos-definitely/">Washington Post reported</a> that Bezos was interested in buying the <keyword id="865621" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Seattle-Seahawks">Seattle Seahawks</keyword> following the death of its owner, Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen. </p><p>The Seahawks never went up for sale, and Allen's sister, Jody, <a href="https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/seahawks-arent-for-sale-jody-allen-leads-ownership/281-9e8a8a05-26fa-4ea7-b0bf-17c59dd57dc8">took over the ownership of the team</a>.</p><p>But that didn't end speculation that Bezos would purchase a franchise. Griffin has played one-handed his whole life and used a prosthetic hand gripped to the bar during the bench press, which is when he first turned heads.</span></p><p><span>Griffin told reporters that his goal was six reps of 225 lb. He did 20 at the combine.</span></p><p>Griffin <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/03/05/nfl-combine-2018-news-josh-rosen-shaquem-griffin-mmqb-peter-king">told Sports Illustrated's Peter King</a> that when he first got fitted for the prosthetic hand, he struggled to lift with it, saying he could barely bench the 45 lb bar. But he kept working on it and moved up to doing 20 reps of 225 lb.</p><p><span>"We went to go get it fitted for me, and when I started lifting, I could barely bench the bar," he said. "I mean, I'm shaking all over the place and the bar is falling, and I can't lift 45 pounds. But it just goes to show how much work I put in to get to this point."</span></p><p><span>Griffin continued to dazzle by running a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, the fastest time of any linebacker since 2006, when ESPN began recording the times.</span></p><p>Griffin's time was the third-fastest of the combine, trailing only two wide receivers.&#xa0;</p><p>Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll's reaction to Griffin's time was revealing.</p><p>Some of the biggest names in the NFL tweeted their thoughts about Griffin's performance.</p><p>Some in the NFL world think Griffin's performance indicated how he could perform at the pro-level - relentlessly and with heart.</p><p>According to King, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton noted that some players will try to play through hand injuries during the season. Griffin, meanwhile, has played that his entire life and is accustomed to it, playing with high energy at every level.</p><p>Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman <a href="http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2762612-shaquem-griffin-one-handed-lb-overcomes-it-all-to-dominate-the-nfl-combine">told Bleacher Report's Doug Farrar</a>: "<span>He's very exciting to watch on film because he just plays with his heart, with passion, and he gives you everything he has on every snap. Griffin was named the 2016 American Athletic Conference defensive player of the year and won the Peach Bowl with Central Florida. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/shaquem-griffin-combine-dazzled-nfl-2018-3">He broke out at the NFL combine</a> this year after initially not receiving an invite, posting the best 40-yard dash time for a linebacker since 2003 and putting up 20 reps on 225 pounds on the bench press while using a prosthetic hand.</p><p>Already Griffin is becoming a star in the NFL world. <a href="http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2018/story/_/id/23339319/shaquem-griffin-signs-nike-endorsement-deal">According to ESPN's Darren Rovell</a>, Griffin signed an endorsement deal with Nike on Friday and already lined up deals with Bose, JCPenny, and Eleven Madison, a luxury watch brand.</p><p>That a fifth-round pick could already sign so many endorsements shows how inspirational his story is to so many people.</p><p>Additionally, <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/990971979984449536">according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport</a>, Griffin has received tons of media requests from around the world but has mostly turned them down so he can focus on football.</p><p>Indeed, while Griffin has a feel-good story, the Seahawks didn't draft him out of sympathy. Head coach Pete Carroll said the Seahawks were impressed by Griffin's combine performance and the interview afterward. </p><p>"We're expecting you to come in here and bust ass," Carroll told Griffin when informing him of their draft decision, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/columnist/bell/2018/04/28/shaquem-griffin-nfl-draft-seattle-seahawks/561849002/">USA Today's Jarrett Bell reported</a>.</p><p>Most draft analysts predicted Griffin would be taken in the fourth or fifth round. But the brand still went ahead with it in order to continue to appeal to future generations of customers.</li><li>The ad is part of a broader brand repositioning, and turns Gillette's 30-year-old tagline "The Best A Man Can Get" on its head, making it a call for men to take an inward look and placing the onus on them to be the best versions of themselves.</li><li>Pankaj Bhalla, brand director for Gillette and Venus, called it it "a statement of self-reflection" from the brand.</li><li>Gillette first started brainstorming the repositioning in the spring of 2018, and ran several qualitative tests before running it.</li></ul><p>Gillette was well aware that its new ad would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gillette-metoo-commercial-criticizes-men-2019-1">ruffle some feathers.</a></p><p>But it still went ahead with it because it knew it needed to reposition itself to continue to resonate with the next generation of its customers, and wanted to leverage its position as a 117 year-old brand and a market leader to spark dialogue.</p><p>"We knew that this particular commercial would trigger a conversation," Pankaj Bhalla, brand director for Gillette and Venus, told Business Insider. "The idea was to get people thinking, because the belief was that good <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> does trigger a healthy debate."</p><p>"<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=80&amp;v=z2rIgsPlJd0">We Believe</a>," which debuted on Monday, minces no words in attempting to address toxic masculinity. The minute-and-a-half spot opens with a montage of news anchors covering the #MeToo-related movement, followed by a narrator asking: "Is this the best a man can get? Is it?" The narration then continues over scenes of men changing their behavior, whether it is how they respond to bullying or how they interact with women.</p><p>It turns Gillette's 30-year-old tagline "The Best A Man Can Get" on its head, repositioning it as a call for men to take an inward look and placing the onus on them to be the best versions of themselves. The idea was to make the tagline relevant in the current day and age in a way that appeals to people emotionally, not just practically, said Bhalla.</p><p>While certainly a deliberate move, Gillette insisted that the ad is not a political statement.</p><p>"It isn't a social statement or a political one at all," said Bhalla. "It is a statement of self-reflection from a brand that caters primarily to men - that one of the ways they can be the best version of themselves is by being great role models to the next generation."</p><p>The ad is the first one by a mainstream brand to tackle the #MeToo movement head-on, and comes on the heels of a string of other marketers taking a stand on hot-button issues in recent years. But it isn't first time that parent company Proctor &amp; Gamble has promoted its stance on social issues like gender equality. Its "Like a Girl" campaign for feminine-care brand Always, for example, made waves as well.</p><p>"This new spot from Gillette continues our effort to spark conversation on issues of bias and equality, which drives reflection and understanding," a P&amp;G spokesperson told Business Insider. "We take seriously our role as one of the world's largest advertisers to use our voice to be a positive force for good in society."</p><p>"We Believe" was also backed by months of qualitative research and testing. Gillette first started brainstorming with its agency Grey in the spring of 2018, said Bhalla, followed by qualitative research across both men and women around the notion of masculinity. It also tested creative before greenlighting the final creative.</p><p>"Masculinity is a complex topic," said Bhalla. "It's still in the early days, but we feel good about the direction we've taken as a brand."</p><p>Gillette also teased the topic in other commercials encouraging men to be the best version of themselves in the run-up to the launch of the latest ad. "Your Best Never Comes Easy" featured Seattle Seahawks' Shaquem Griffin overcoming adversity to reach where he is, while "Handle With Care" showcased its assisted shaving product in recent months.</p><p>In recent years, Gillette has been facing stiff competition from direct-to-consumer upstarts like Dollar Shave Club and Harry's and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bearded-millennials-cause-crisis-for-razor-industry-2018-8">declining sales as fewer men</a> choose to shave.
