"12th Fail" is based on Anurag Pathak's bestselling novel about the journey of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and IRS officer Shraddha Joshi. "In a remarkable feat, the Vidhu Vinod Chopra directorial '12th Fail' has crossed the 50 crores nett mark in its sixth week, totalling Rs 50.68 crore nett signalling a resounding success for content-driven cinema. Starring Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar, this real-life tale has not only captured hearts but also emerged as a triumph at the box office," the makers said in a statement. Mumbai Indians look to sort bowling woes in clash against Gujarat Titans

"I have just started learning." That's Hariprasad <keyword id="1637534" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="chaurasia" source="Orion">Chaurasia</keyword>, flute maestro, one of India's most well-known classical musicians and the man who could well have been a wrestler instead. With a humble shake of his head as if trying to get rid of the idea of success, the 84-year-old rushes in with words when asked about seven decades of playing the flute. His journey, he says, has just started and all hopes of perfecting the craft can only be fulfilled in the next birth. "Now I can only hope that something happens in the next birth. But I am happy so many people across the world give me so much love," Chaurasia told PTI in an interview. Chaurasia, who has comfortably straddled the twin worlds of classical and popular music and has composed melodies for films such as "<keyword id="310845" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="silsila" source="Orion">Silsila</keyword>" with santoor maestro <keyword id="6432164" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shivkumar-sharma" source="Orion">Shivkumar Sharma</keyword>, is grateful for the adulation he receives from the audience. "Today they come to see me, no matter how well or how badly I play the flute. It is their love for me that brings them here," he said, referring to his advanced age and his battle with Parkinson's disease. "I am very fortunate that I receive so much love, I don't know if anyone else has been loved so much or not. I know of Krishna, but he was only loved by the girls," the Mumbai-based artiste said playfully. Had he continued on the path set by his wrestler father, it wouldn't have been possible to reach where he is today, Chaurasia said. "My father used to tell me that I would beg for food if I continue on this line. But look where I am today and how much love I receive from people. Could this have been possible if I had continued in the field of wrestling?" he asked. Chaurasia was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, in 1938. His father had decided his son would follow his footsteps into the wrestling mat. However, Chaurasia, uninterested and perennially tired after the training his father was putting him through, had other things on his mind. According to the veteran musician's biography, "Breath of Gold", by journalist Sathya Saran, he secretly started learning at the age of 15 from a classical vocalist called Raja Ram in the neighbourhood. He soon drifted towards the more instrumental dimension of it through the bamboo flute that has become synonymous with the maestro. It was only when he was to leave for a job with the All India Radio as a performer in Cuttack, Odisha, in 1957 that his father came to know about his son's passion for the flute. "Wrestlers tend to fight every day, whether it is with other wrestlers or with vegetable vendors in a market. But flute requires devotion, service of people, service of the guru, you need to keep the master happy because he is akin to god, it is a line that only very fortunate ones get to carry forward," Chaurasia said. The music composer and director received national and international recognition through several awards and accolades such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the title of 'Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau' from the Government of the Netherlands. Chaurasia was also appointed Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters by France. In his long years associated with the flute, Chaurasia has worked with leading names in the world of music, including singer-songwriter George Harrison of The Beatles, English guitarist John McLaughlin, legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar and tabla player <keyword id="8925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zakir-hussain" source="Orion">Zakir Hussain</keyword>. After moving to Mumbai, then Bombay, in 1962, Chaurasia gradually went up the popularity ladder by working in films, including "Jahan Ara" (1964), "<keyword id="30732" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="umrao-jaan" source="Orion">Umrao Jaan</keyword>" (1981), and "Hero" (1983), playing an interlude here and there. The iconic tune played by actor Bharat Bhushan and then Jackie Shroff playing his son in Subhash Ghai's "Hero" overnight became Chaurasia's calling card and is still remembered. Even though Chaurasia and Sharma worked in several films together, it was only with Yash Chopra's romance drama "Silsila" (1981) that both artistes came to be known as Shiv-Hari, a music director duo that delivered blockbuster music film after film. Talking about the films of the era, Chaurasia said after reaching Bombay, he saw many talented people and thought of trying his luck in the film industry. "We worked a lot in films and the driving force was always this that if these talented people can make music, then why not us. And by god's grace, it all went well." The Shiv-Hari duo was behind the still remembered music of "Chandni" (1989), "Lamhe" (1991), and "Darr" (1993) among several other films. "Forgive me for saying this but today's films and music do not touch people. Can they make 'Mughal-e-Azam' today, or 'Anarkali', or 'Baiju Bawra'? Nobody has it in them to make such cinema. Today, they discuss it for two hours and make a film in a day," Chaurasia said disapprovingly. The octogenarian artiste still has hope for the younger generation, who he said are more interested in learning than his own generation was back in the day. <ul><li>Yesterday, Twitter lost its legal indemnity in India for failing to fully comply with new IT rules that came into force on May 25.</li><li>We speak to digital experts to understand how this decision could impact the platform and brands in India.</li></ul>The global microblogging platform Twitter lost its legal protection in India on June 16 over its failure to comply with the government’s new IT rules. Twitter has now lost its ‘intermediary’ status in India, which gave it immunity from liabilities over any third-party data hosted by the platform. The Jack Dorsey-owned platform will be held accountable for every single ‘objectionable’ tweet under the <keyword id="6433641" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="information-technology-act">Information Technology Act</keyword>, 2000 and the country’s penal laws. With this, Twitter has become the first US-based social media platform to lose legal protection in India. According to India’s Electronics and Information Technology Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad’s statement on Twitter, the platform ‘chose the path of deliberate defiance when it comes to the Intermediary Guidelines.’ <div type="twitter" handle="rsprasad" handlename="Ravi Shankar Prasad" image="http://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/727848709518675968/xebahww0_normal.jpg" favoritecount="7770" retweetcount="1702" status="Further, Twitter was given multiple opportunities to comply with the same, however it has deliberately chosen the path of non compliance." createdat="1623823338000" id="1405043034660560899"></div> Prasad also blamed Twitter for being biased and selectively labelling some content as manipulated media and ignoring others. “Further, what is perplexing is that Twitter fails to address the grievances of users by refusing to set up process as mandated by the law of the land. Additionally, it chooses a policy of flagging manipulates media, only when it suits, its likes and dislikes,” he wrote in a Twitter thread. We reached out to digital experts from the advertising industry to understand the implications of this development, to understand what it means for Twitter and brands in India. Hence it's not likely that it will directly impact brands or their campaign spends. The deals will remain intact as long as there is no backlash or additional rulings coming their way.

 It was around 830 PM when the news created a buzz around the attending India inc. leaders. Even as, at the ceremony a podium discussion on the benefits of corporate governance was being moderated for former <keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi">SEBI</keyword> chief M. <keyword id="164863" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Damodaran">Damodaran</keyword>.  Even as business leaders gathered at the ceremony, began discussing the wider implications of such a stand, <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> founder's mind was occupied with two things- 
 
1) To figure out a place to take his family out for dinner 
 
2) Get in touch with his team in Delhi 
 As he jostled out the media's way, gathered at the ceremony, safely venturing into the iconic Leopold cafe in Mumbai, to have a family dinner, it is there that he made his first call to his marketing chief, <keyword id="1024568" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shankar-Nath">Shankar Nath</keyword>, says Sharma, ‘I asked <keyword id="4458" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shankar">Shankar</keyword> if they had started working on an ad that could be taken out next morning to which I gained a reassuring reply that the plan was already underway and I soon started draft samples that were being planned. My first instinct told me that we need to credit the man the brave man that has taken this call.' 
 It was already 11 15 PM and most newspapers had refused to carry the full page ad that Paytm had designed for the occasion. Fortunately for them, despite the late hour, the Telegraph and the <keyword id="6518498" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-Times">Hindustan Times</keyword> agreed to carry the full page as that congratulated Modi for the disruptive decision. 
 
 
 Sharma's problems were not to end here. Even as the country went through the most crucial economic change since liberalization in 1991, Sharma had to catch a flight to <keyword id="24349" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hong-Kong">Hong Kong</keyword> in the next 24 hours. 'I felt like a fish out of the water but I'm glad that I had a team that had already swung into action. At Paytm we believe that speed is our biggest bet and that's exactly what our actions represented.' 
 
Back at the Paytm’s headquarters in Noida, Sudhanshu Gupta, VP- Business, Paytm relayed the atmosphere at the office. 'We got into a meeting at 9 AM which went on till 4 30 PM. Sure, after the launch Paytm’s payments bank, work at our end will increase but we are willing to put in the hours for the results.' 
 Paytm’s payments bank was expected to launch by <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword> this year but the pending approval from RBI means delay but Sharma is optimistic,’ It shouldn’t take more than four to six weeks after the license is issued by Central bank. So let’s say if I were to get the approval by end of this month, the Payments bank will launch by January 2017.’ 
 When asked about his opinion on <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>’s payments bank, Sharma said,’ We never talk about our competitors because what we are doing is never related to what they’re up to.’ 
 
That differentiation reflected today when Paytm launched POS on its platform for offline merchants, something that hasn’t been done in the country before.

India Digital Summit: union communications minister will discuss digital policies, commerce and startups at the summit

<keyword id="1492983" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shinjini-Kumar">Shinjini Kumar</keyword>, a former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) executive and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) executive director, is all set to join <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>'s payments bank as the CEO, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the matter told TOI. In the past, Kumar has also had a stint at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. 
 
She is expected to join Paytm in March, as the company gets ready to start its payments bank operations after June this year. While they had earlier planned to start operations in the first quarter, there has been some delay in the operation. 
 
The Noida-headquartered company is looking for fresh capital and discussions with investors are said to be at an early stage. 
 
At PwC Mumbai, Kumar led the banking, capital market and financial services regulatory practice for 5 years. It was in 2010 that she had quit Bank of America's investment division, where she was heading the India compliance, managing regulatory and compliance risk across product lines, including corporate and investment banking, global markets, equities and private banking. 
 
Paytm is funded by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, and is one of the 11 entities to have got a license from the RBI to establish a payments bank. The list also includes Reliance Industries, Aditya Birla Group, Airtel and Vodafone. 
 
To make the launch a grand and successful affair, Paytm has been making key senior-level appointments from companies like Amazon, Airtel and ITC. Presently, it is in the process of hiring about 3,000 people for handling the operation of its payments bank.

Cricket World Cup 2019: Odds of India winning improve while batting second

Thanks to India’s top technologists who have helped the government to take up ambitious projects such as digitisation of records, payment systems that work across platforms, a goods &amp; <keyword id="645517" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="services-tax">services tax</keyword> (<keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword>) network and digital lockers for citizens. The technologists want to build “country-scale” systems and working in close association with the government to endorse free and open source systems. This information was revealed in an Economic Times report. 
 It all started a year ago at the Le Meridien hotel in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Sharad Sharma, co-founder of software products think tank iSPIRT, and some volunteers gave a presentation before BJP leader <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword>, who had just taken charge as minister for information technology, as per the ET report. 
	 

	Later that day, at an interaction with them, Prasad uttered the words "Open APIs" for the first time. API refers to Application Programming Interfaces, or tools that assist developers in writing code that interfaces with other software. 
	 

	Prasad, a lawyer-turned-politician, did not have any idea about such systems, but he promised to do "whatever it takes" to get government systems to work better. RS Sharma, the bureaucrat who was appointed as the secretary for Information Technology, nodded knowingly by the minister's side. 
	 

	The hard work paid off earlier this month when the government released its Open API policy, which will make technology systems built by the government a lot better. 
	 

	The policy and other measures that the government has recently taken to endorse free and open source systems is the effect of close coordination between the government and top technologists. 
	 

	"There is a huge amount of voluntary spirit out there and there is no harm in using that," said Sharma. "These people are highly successful in the technology field. They are brilliant architects and bring fresh, different thinking to us," he added. 
	 

	Now let’s read who all helped the government in this initiative to make the technology systems work better. <keyword id="234235" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lalitesh-Katragadda">Lalitesh Katragadda</keyword>, who was country manager (Products) for <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> in India, has worked on the open API policy. He is also helping the <keyword id="68188" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh-government">Andhra Pradesh government</keyword>'s billion dollar fibre optic rollout, which will give millions of users access to high-speed Internet. Amit Ranjan, who co-founded and sold <keyword id="1037643" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="SlideShare">SlideShare</keyword> to <keyword id="28120" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Linkedin">LinkedIn</keyword> for $119 million, now works for the government's <keyword id="6623307" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Department-of-Information-Technology">Department of Information Technology</keyword> for a token salary. His job is to find smart ways of digitising millions of records and give Indian users digital lockers. 
	 

	Katragadda and Ranjan are not alone. More such technologists, experienced in building and scaling systems used by millions of users, have begun working closely with the government, influencing policy decisions on technology and helping the government build systems like a Google or Facebook would. Pramod Varma, chief architect of the <keyword id="111459" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Unique-Identification-Authority">Unique Identification Authority</keyword> (UID) of India, is one of the key people working on multiple projects with the government. Varma, an ardent supporter of open and scalable systems, is playing a critical role in helping the goods &amp; service tax network prepare its complex technology backbone. He is also working with the National Payments Corporation of India, an umbrella body supported by the country's largest banks, to build a next-generation payment platform. Anand Deshpande, founder &amp; CEO of Persistent Systems; Gian <keyword id="221777" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Franco">Franco</keyword>, formerly of SAP; <keyword id="2346527" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jay-Pullur">Jay Pullur</keyword>, founder &amp; CEO of Pramati Systems; former Googler Sanjay Jain, and <keyword id="2878005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vijay-Vujjini">Vijay Vujjini</keyword>, chief technical architect at HCL Infotech for the <keyword id="6355252" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="UIDAI">UIDAI</keyword> programme, are among the others who are volunteers at iSPIRT -- the Indian Software Product Industry Round Table. "This approach is critical for building next-generation digital infrastructure," said technocrat <keyword id="44604" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nandan-Nilekani">Nandan Nilekani</keyword>, who used a similar strategy of bringing in people from outside the government to work on Aadhaar, the project which aspires to give over a billion Indians a unique identification number. 
	 

	Most of these volunteers are being brought together by iSPIRT. "Now with iSPIRT there is an institutional way to take this (volunteering) forward," said Nilekani. 
	 

	The idea is to have volunteers who put the country first and have no conflicting interests, said Sharma. "You need large-scale tech guys to do country-scale technology problems," he concluded.

New Delhi, From appealing people not to vote for them to flaunting the unsuccessful tag, changing name in each election to losing huge sums of money in security deposits -- some tenacious <keyword id="20022603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="independent" source="keywords">Independent</keyword> candidates have tried these all but losing elections became a habit for them. Tamil Nadu's K Padmarajan, who proudly calls himself the "Election King", might be the only candidate in the election fray who urges people not to vote for him, so he can retain his tag of being "most unsuccessful candidate", a feat also registered in the Limca Book of records. The 65-year-old tyre repair shop owner also finds pride in his entry in the <keyword id="19981515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="guinness-book-of-world-records" source="keywords">Guinness Book of World Records</keyword> for candidate with most contested elections. He claims to have lost Rs 80 lakh so far in security deposits which gets forfeited every time he loses an election besides expenses for filing nomination amid fanfare. Gearing up for his 239th attempt, Padmarajan has filed his nomination for the 18th <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections from Thrissur in Kerala and Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu. "I began fighting elections in 1988 from my home town of Mettur, located in Tamil Nadu. I will be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls too," 65-year-old Tolani told PTI. "My father's wish was that we do not have to stop the trend till someone from the family gets elected. If I am not able to do it in my lifetime, my two daughters will carry forward the baton," said Tolani, who is a property broker. <keyword id="21190648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-prakash-kodekar" source="keywords">Vijay Prakash Kodekar</keyword> from <keyword id="19897309" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pune" source="keywords">Pune</keyword>, a retired staffer from state electricity board, has a different agenda behind contesting elections as independent candidate -- advocating zero budget poll campaigns. He can be seen pushing a steel cart on wheels in streets of Latur, where he is planning to contest the Lok Sabha polls. A flex board on the cart says "Main bhi Pradhanmantri". "The message why cannot any poor individual be the Prime Minister of the country. Why this exorbitant expenditure by parties on election campaigns? Polls can be fought on zero budget and the money can be utilised for public welfare," said 78-year-old Kodekar, who campaigns wearing a white dhoti. Having contested 24 elections so far, Kodekar uses a different name for different elections. "Some elections I have contested using the name Vijay, some with 'Rashtrapati' and some with the name 'Znyosho' -- as I am a disciple of Osho. I complete the name change formalities and then I contest the polls using the new name," he said. Hyderabad techie Ravinder Uppula, uses different campaign strategies for each Lok Sabha election he fights. In 2014 -- it was anti-corruption march and in 2019 it was a liquid only fast. "I promise during my campaign that if I get elected, I will get a lie detector test done every 100 days so public who votes for me doesn't feel cheated. That is how our politicians should do as well to weed out corruption," he said. Uppula, however, is disappointed with the poll campaign expenses. "It should not be an expensive deal to canvass in this country, an agenda and the right promise should be enough rather than the poll fray leaving the voters with no choice except voting for a smaller thief or a bigger thief," he added. The strange obsession of the independent candidates has also been featured in the book "The Power of The Ballot: Travail and Triumph in the Elections". Sharing the saga of some of the independent candidates' stint at the elections, the book decodes "why do some people contest every time knowing they will lose?" Kaka Joginder Singh, also known as "Dhartipakad", was a textile-shop owner who contested and lost over 300 elections. He died in 1998. In elections, he always contested independently, and always lost his security deposits. He earned the nickname Dhartipakad after several unsuccessful runs for the post of the President of India. The year with the greatest yield for him was during the tenth presidential elections in 1992 in which he earned fourth place in the polling with 1,135 votes, losing to Shankar Dayal Sharma; it was his best performance. He also contested elections from 14 states of India in the 1990s, mostly for state assemblies. Singh died in 1998. Long before <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> chose Varanasi as an election destination, the city had Narendra Nath Dubey "Adig". Often referred to as Kashi's Dhartipakad, he has been fighting every election as an independent candidate since 1984, losing his security deposit each time. He passed away in 2022.

New Delhi, Films should serve as a catalyst of change and not a business model, believes filmmaker <keyword id="7936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vidhu-vinod-chopra" source="Orion">Vidhu Vinod Chopra</keyword> as he returns to the big screen after three years with "<keyword id="15771130" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="12th-fail" source="Orion">12th Fail</keyword>", a story of ambition, dedication and overcoming setbacks. The ace director, known for films such as "Khamosh", "Parinda", "1942: A Love Story" and "<keyword id="3897" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mission-Kashmir" source="Orion">Mission Kashmir</keyword>", said money has never dictated his creative decisions. "My job as an artist or a filmmaker is to make the world slightly better than what it was when I came. So, if I can make a film that can make a slight difference to people's lives, it inspires me. "Money has never driven me. I could have made 'Munnabhai' 3, 4, 5, 6... and be a multi-millionaire, which I'm not. I chose to make '12th Fail', with <keyword id="189215" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vikrant-massey" source="Orion">Vikrant Massey</keyword>," Chopra told PTI in an interview here. "12th Fail" is based on Anurag Pathak's best-selling novel about the incredible journey of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and IRS officer Shraddha Joshi. The movie stars Massey in the lead along with Medha Shankar. Though inspired by Sharma's life, Chopra said "12th Fail" is a story of "each one of us" coming to big cities with aspirations and dreams. "I started writing this film when I was 66 and now I'm 71. You can't write a film like this in months. It takes years because every character has a story. It's not a biopic. It's each one of us... There is a lot of me and you in the film." Integral to the movie's storyline is the idea of "restart". As inspirational and motivational it may sound, the concept stemmed from a personal tragedy, said Chopra. "My brother was the closest person to me in the world, apart from my wife and kids. During the pandemic, when I was developing this film, he was in Maldives. He delayed coming to Mumbai and couldn't survive. It hit me very hard. "Within a week or so, I realised it is not fair to the people who are around me. I was already in the story and the whole concept of restart took place in my head. It didn't come from a happy place. It came from a tragedy that struck me," the director recalled. Chopra said somewhere while healing through the personal loss, he realised that life was much like a video game -- "you lose, you press a button and move on". "I told myself why can't we do that in life. We have setbacks, we fall, and then we lose everything. Life is a game too. The thought is inspirational but not easy. It is about the way you look at life," he added. Chopra said through "12th Fail", which released on Friday, he wants to address that nothing is impossible to achieve, but if one faces a setback, the goal should always be to "restart". "When I read about the suicides in Kota and anywhere else. I want to tell those kids.... It's tough, I understand. I lost the man I loved the most in my life. (But) you got to restart. And UPSC is not just one thing, you can explore so much in life." Apart from Massey, who has established himself as a dependable performer with projects such as "A Death in the Gunj", "Haseen Dillruba" and "Criminal Justice", the film features an impressive supporting cast in Anant V Joshi, Anshumaan Pushkar, Sanjay Bishnoi and Priyanshu Chatterjee. Chopra said ever since he decided to make a film on the subject, he was sure about casting "real people". "I didn't want filmy heroes pretending to be these people. Most of the cast are new actors, first time actors or not very famous. But they are real people. I rehearsed with them for one year," the director said, adding that he is currently writing a film for which he would be needing movie stars. "I will cast a movie star, if it is a movie star role. Like I'm writing a film for which I need big movie stars. I made 'Eklavya' and I wouldn't have made that movie without Mr Bachchan. Every film has its own demand, so to say. '12th Fail' demanded me to be very real."
