<ul><li>After two months of joining Wunderman Thompson, <keyword id="2705387" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shamsuddin-jasani" source="Orion">Shamsuddin Jasani</keyword> is all set to propel the agency's South Asia business forward.</li><li>Jasani talks to us about the future of the advertising industry, what employees are expecting from a leader as the COVID scare increases across the country, challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for him as a CEO of a creative agency, and his larger vision for the agency.</li></ul>After 13 years with Dentsu’s Isobar -- growing it from a two-person team to over 300-strong people across South Asia, Shamsuddin Jasani joined creative advertising agency Wunderman Thompson in October 2021. At his new stint as the Chief Executive Officer of the South Asian market, he is excited about continuing Wunderman Thompson’s creative legacy and marrying it with Data, Commerce and Technology. Before this huge career shuffle, he asked himself, “Where does the future of the agency model lie?” Telling us why he chose Wunderman Thompson, Jasani said, “The agency was right at the juncture where I thought we needed to evolve from. It also allows me the flexibility to have that vision and take Wunderman Thompson to where I feel the agency model needs to reach. The edge I want to bring in is from a creative and technology perspective, to add to the already existing beautiful legacy of a brand-experience creative agency.” The rules of the game, in a world as dynamic as digital marketing and traditional advertising, change every minute. Jasani mentioned that the kind of competitive set that exists today is very different from what it was even till a few years ago. He was quick to realise that he needs to be ahead of the curve and decided to move on from Isobar. He explained, “It means that our competitor set evolves from not only having the traditional agency model -- it will accentuate and evolve into completely different platforms. And that's why the idea is to take what I have learned, marry digital-first and technology thinking to creative-first thinking. The aim is to come up with the agency model which is more relevant in today's world. Wunderman Thompson already had those ingredients, it is just about putting all this together.” After the pandemic, there's no doubt that consumer behaviour and shopping patterns have changed. From medicine and grocery to luxury cars, internet users are making a lot of their purchases online. However, this doesn’t mean that people have lost interest in experiencing the physical world around us or buying on the basis of feel and smell still. So, Jasani is looking at enhancing Wunderman Thompson’s current capabilities and combining them with his specialty - commerce. “As we enhance our capabilities in commerce, we’ll also go to our clients and say, 'How can I marry that with commerce?' Because today, commerce is going to be as critical as just the communication in marketing that we're doing. We are going to break this journey up into six months, a year, and two years. The evolution is starting off as a brand experience agency that talks about marketing, advertising, and adding digital components to it -- the innovations that the new mediums are bringing up, exploring how online and offline co-exist. The whole Phygital experience of how we are taking people from online to offline and back again is going to be very critical for solving a lot of our client's needs. And it would be about how we can be relevant and work with them to solve their needs on every touchpoint of the consumer journey, including what happens post-purchase,” said Jasani. Preparing for the impending wave of COVID-19 Jasani moved into a new agency when COVID numbers finally seemed to be coming under control. With the number of vaccinated citizens increasing every day, hope and optimism was beginning to replace uncertainty and anxiety. Consumer sentiment was up and employees were back to working from the office. However, just in the last two weeks, India has seen a rapid resurgence of COVID cases. We might be heading into a recap of 2020 and employees will need their leader’s support yet again. Clients and their budgets for traditional mediums might also plummet. Jasani is confident that the employees and clients are better prepared for the third wave than they were back in 2020. He said, “The number one thing that is always on our minds is the health and wellness of all employees but I also wanted to talk about how this is a situation in which we need to be very agile in how we are reacting, in terms of the people and externally as well for the clients. So we are completely supportive. We have everything in place to make sure that our teams feel supported. They feel that they are a part of the Wunderman Thompson team but at the same time, they have their safety and security also taken care of. The converse to that is we still want people -- once things are back to normal, or at least the new normal, as they call it -- to start interacting much more. We are still working in an agency setup, which is all about people working together to come up with some brilliant solutions. While digital is a great medium, a lot of that is really widening off people really working together. So, we are looking at a very hybrid, agile model where we want to have these pockets of inspiration that we want people to get into, which can be physical and digital.” As we prepare for another possible wave of COVID-19, Jasani has one piece of advice for brands and agencies. Sharing what consumers will expect from brands this time, he said, “I think brands need to be true. People see through brands and businesses that are just doing public service announcements, so it's very important to be true. And secondly, we are slightly better prepared for this wave than we were in the last wave. So a lot of that communication still needs to be normal. We simply need to evolve our channels, the way our consumers can interact with us, reach to us and buy stuff It is going to be about making it seamless for them, in whatever communication that you're doing. It's about making things easier for the consumer. If I have to put it in one line, it is about how you are creating that sense of ease and seamlessness.” Larger vision for the agency Wunderman Thompson and Jasani’s vision for the next three years is to grow the agency to twice its size. On his game plan to achieve this goal, he shared, “We will do this by taking our legacy and adding a layer of commerce, technology, and MarTech, and also doing brilliant work creatively. I think that is something that does not change, creativity is always going to be the center of everything we do. In fact, this focus on creativity will only increase in 2022 and 2023 -- the focus on doing brilliant work, and helping clients really take part in this ever-evolving landscape and making consumer experience better. I think that's what 2022 is all about.”

Isobar launches Isobar Consulting to help brands define their digital transformation strategies

<ul><li>As the government banned 59 Chinese apps around talks of data privacy and security, many influencers and brands have been left in the lurch.</li><li>Since apps like <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword> have a huge influencer community and brands also have their marketing monies invested on the platform, we spoke to experts to understand how things might pan out in the near future.</li></ul> For a while now, there have been increasing debates around <keyword id="145060" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-security">data security</keyword> and privacy in India. Amidst these conversations and also mounting tensions between China and India, the government of India on Monday announced the ban of around 59 Chinese apps. These apps include popular video-sharing social networking platform TikTok, WeChat, UC Browser, SHAREit, Baidu Map, Shein, Helo and Likee, amongst others. The government, in its official announcement said, “The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking it’s power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps ( see Appendix) since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.” Hours after the announcement was made, TikTok India’s head <keyword id="47432" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nikhil-Gandhi">Nikhil Gandhi</keyword> released a statement.It read, “The Government of India has issued an interim order for the blocking of 59 apps, including TikTok and we are in the process of complying with it. We have been invited to meet with concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and have not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government. Further if we are requested to in the future we would not do so. We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity. TikTok has democratized the internet by making it available in 14 Indian languages, with hundreds of millions of users, artists, story-tellers, educators and performers depending on it for their livelihood, many of whom are first time internet users.” TikTok enjoys a huge following in India and has a dedicated fan base as well as innumerable users who have become influencers on the platform. India accounts for a huge chuck of TikTok’s global installs. According to estimates by Sensor Tower, when TikTok crossed 2 billion global downloads, India was at the forefront of this growth. The country accounted for 611 million lifetime downloads or 30.3% of the total. This opened up the opportunities for both content creators and brands who started looking at the platform as an effective way of reaching out to audiences. We saw quite a few brands come up with innovative campaigns on the platform. TikTok has also been strengthening its offerings for advertisers. However, this ban will put a lot of things on hold. We wanted to understand the impact of this ban on the influencer community and reached out to a few experts. But if it lasts for a few months it certainly is going to have a big effect on the curated video space, YouTube for sure will be the big gainer as well as Indian apps on the space. Ashutosh, CEO and Co-founder, Buzzoka The ban on Tik-Tok definitely calls for brands to rethink their influencer marketing strategies. Undeniably, the platform saw a spike in interest in the recent past however it must be noted that it formed only a part of brands' influencer marketing spend. On the contrary, mature platforms like Instagram and YouTube have always had an edge over the former. As a result, the impact of its ban will be lesser on brands and more on the content creators who were only present on Tik-Tok. I believe there's always a silver lining. Disruption will take place in the market. There is no dearth of platforms hence, brands will increasingly turn to them to reach similar audiences. Similarly, influencers will be able to make new identities on other platforms as far as they are good and confident about their content creation. Moreover, this will create new avenues in the ecosystem for emerging Indian platforms like Mitron and Chingari and will encourage them to invest more in enhancing their respective platforms and see rapid growth from here. Premkumar Iyer, National Operations Head, Gozoop This ban is a very big move for Indian M&amp;A. It will be interesting to see how the whole ban eventually plays out. Of all the apps banned, TikTok ranks highest on potential due to its hinterland dominance, which led brands to make investments on the platform, both in terms of time and money. Brands will probably press pause and see how this culminates before attempting any major course correction. However, the real game here is for the influencers who have built strong communities on the platform. We are witnessing a shift as most are moving towards Instagram as it is natively closest to what TikTok enabled for these creators. Cross promoting communities have always been the norm for influencers and since the ban was announced creators have started posting content asking their community to follow them on Instagram and YouTube so that if the ban continues fans can still watch their content. What's going to make this even more interesting is if Instagram's Reels and Facebook's Lasso short video format app launches in India as the timing could not be better.I think for most it is going to be like JayZ says “On to the Next One”. Harikrishnan Pillai, CEO and Co-founder, TheSmallBigIdea Digital platforms across the world are facing tremendous pressure from governments and advertisers to bring in more data transparency and content filtering. This move is led by public outrage and both, the government and brands are quite conscious of their imagery basis their stance. The 150+ brand boycott of Facebook or the Chinese platform bans are clear indicators of this phenomenon. The question is what does it mean to the advertisers, agencies and platforms. In a short to medium term, advertisers and agencies will look at alternate platforms to help them meet their marketing goals. Some of the banned platforms are sizeable, so it would be difficult to find an immediate apparent replacement. In this case, a combination of replacements or an increase in presence in existing platforms can be an option. Also, the ban is still a little unclear from an implementation standpoint. The downloaded apps are still running, though new downloads are at a halt. If the government calls for a complete ban, things will go south for these platforms. Even then, I don't believe brands will advertise on these apps, fearing public outrage. For influencers, from a short term POV, the business will be affected if they have had a single platform focus. From a long term perspective, Indian apps have a great opportunity to grow. ‘Revenge Download' will lead to a sudden spike of Indian apps. Whether they manage to be sticky and effective, time will tell. <keyword id="7372416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Viraj-Sheth">Viraj Sheth</keyword>, Co-founder and CEO, <keyword id="9491005" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="monk-entertainment">Monk Entertainment</keyword> The TikTok ban, if it stays for perpetuity, will prove to be a big dent in the life of many young and budding influencers. TikTok has given rise to an incredible number of influencers who rose to stardom through the platform and earned their bread and butter due to the audience earned from the app. While most of the established TikTokers will see a dip in their branded content earnings because of this ban for a few months, they've been smart enough to build their audiences on platforms like Instagram &amp; YouTube. When brands divert their spends from TikTok to other platforms, this ban will not affect their earnings over a period of time. TikTok had been a huge catalyst in enabling talent from the farthest nooks and corners of India. The ban will leave a gap in the market for Indian short video platforms to come through and make their mark. I hope they make their moves right. Neel Gogia, Co founder, IPLIX Media This step will impact thousands of Tiktok influencers who are dependent on brands for their survival. Brands will be impacted as well. They have already started reaching out to us to understand how they can realign their strategies to reach similar audiences. It will be interesting to see how influencers and brands change their strategies to adapt to the other platforms. We feel in 5-6 months influencers can build their audience in these platforms (if they create relevant content). Ankit Agarwal, Founder, Do Your Thng The ban is more of a statement right now - a comma rather than a full stop. That’s evident from the clarification updated by TikTok India. If, and that’s a big if, the block becomes permanent, it has the potential to change the influencer landscape significantly. Right now, for marketers, TikTok is the space to target Gen Zers as 41% of its users fall in this age bracket. I feel it is one reason why brand custodians place it in the top 3 three platforms for influencer marketing [Instagram (94%), TikTok (52%) and YouTube (52%)]. On top of it, the app has higher engagement rates and average time spent per day than Instagram. When you take away something so effective, brands are bound to feel the pinch. To compensate, they’ll redirect their influencer marketing efforts to other platforms – trigger the said change. On the creator side, the impact will be more substantial and devastating. As Nikhil Gandhi correctly points out, TikTok gave a voice to hundreds of creators generating vernacular content in India. While most creators are savvy enough to diversify to other platforms, there will be few who stand to lose their entire body of work. But all this is contingent on a permanent block, which in my opinion will most probably not happen. Not just because TikTok has been given a chance to submit clarifications, but because executing a ban is not simple with plenty of workarounds available. Honey Singh, CEO &amp; Co-Founder, #ARM Worldwide Content creators have already started nurturing their other platforms like Instagram and Youtube. After this ban, I feel there will be a significant spike on Instagram. These content creators will also face monetary losses since brands have already started pausing their planned TikTok activities for now. At the moment, we are already in touch with many content creators and figuring out how to finish ongoing campaigns. Lastly, this ban will also allow these content creators to think about building a uniform fan following. Post anti-China sentiments have already started depleting the wallets of influencers. After the ban, all the scheduled campaigns from the brands are on pause until further clarity from the government. Creators having large followings on other channels like Instagram/Youtube may recover, but there will be a significant loss for them. The silver lining is that content creators should realize that nothing is permanent. They should start working on an omnichannel presence. Aside from nurturing an audience on a platform, a community beyond a single rented house is a must. The thumb rule for any brand is to know exactly where their audience is. Long-term solutions can include developing platforms such as forums, websites, blogs &amp; newsletters to nurture their audience beyond a single platform. Sandeep Sreekumar, Managing Director, Media Moments Over the years, apps like TikTok, Helo and the likes had caught the eye of various brands and had developed into strong marketing mediums. Now, with the recent update, there will be a shift in the platforms used by the influencers while the overall approach will remain the same. This move will also open new opportunities for many Indian apps.And it will be interesting to see how Indian apps like Chingari, Mitron and Roposo will come into the foreplay and cash in the situation. For instance, many apps experienced a massive increase in the download rates soon after the announcement. Having said that; thorough understanding, planning and research will be required before associating with these apps to deliver right message and content. But as long as quality content is being created, audiences will follow and as long as audiences are there, brands will invest regardless of the platform. Piyush Kumar, CEO &amp; Founder, Rooter We have seen a 250% increase in new users joining Rooter in the last 12 hours and we are estimating 1 million new users on our platform in the next 15 Days. This surge will be organically driven by our users and content creators. The ban on Chinese apps like TikTok opens up a huge opportunity for Indian apps to come to the forefront. There will be a huge drop in user acquisition costs as Chinese apps may no longer invest their money in our homegrown apps money. Moreover, the advertising business for the Indian apps will also increase in the absence of TikTok. TikTok might have been a source of income for thousands of content creators, but there were only 1-1.5% of users creating content on it. The rest were the consumers. With the emergence of alternate local platforms, creators will automatically shift their content dais, enticing the brands to partner with them for engaging with the audience. It will be a win-win situation for both. Divanshi Gupta, Director, The Marcom Avenue The recent geopolitical events on Indo-China borders have resulted in the Indian government banning TikTok and other 58 apps in the light of protecting the privacy and sovereignty of its residents. This action may have its repercussions on both the governments, but it is definitely going to have a significant impact on the brands and advertisers who had set aside the quarter budget for influencer marketing campaigns on TikTok social media. This short-form content media app had begun to attract a considerable number of users. And now, the advertisers will have to undeniably shift their strategy and focus on creating long-form content on platforms, like YouTube and Instagram, with already established and known faces by bidding adieu to TikTok influencers.

How TikTok’s ban in India might impact influencers and brands

<ul><li>The pandemic-induced lockdown accelerated <keyword id="618493" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-marketing">digital marketing</keyword>’s adoption rate in India. </li><li>A lot of brands have a digital-first and digital-only approach, while there are brands that want to start and stay only on digital. </li><li>So will this be a strong enough push for clients to invest a lion’s share on digital? We reach out to digital agencies to understand what we can expect in the future as digital takes precedence. </li></ul>Digital marketing has taken precedence over all mediums since the outbreak of coronavirus. According to DAN’s digital report released in January this year, digital marketing was expected to grow by 10.9% and reach ₹75,952 crore by the end of 2020. However, with the nationwide lockdown, print, radio, OOH, in-cinema advertising saw a massive drop, enabling further acceleration in digital’s overall growth. 2019 was also another year with its own set of challenges. With the economic slowdown, advertisers decided to cut back on spends and market sentiments reached a new low but despite those hurdles, digital continued to flourish. Now with reading news, catching up with friends, dating, hanging out and many other social activities becoming virtual, the whole market dynamics have altered. This has led to marketers rethinking their strategies and digital agencies introspecting on how they can lead the change. As markets are now slowly opening up, we reached out to experts to find out if the ad revenue pie will change, too. Experts opined that most advertising budgets and brands will be digital-centric in the times to come once we recover from the dent that COVID-19 has created. Unny Radhakrishnan, CEO, Digitas India said, "Digital always had a year-on-year healthy growth. More often the growth stories are reported based on how much digital media spends are growing. While that is clearly an indication of growth, the current situation is triggering accelerated growth not just in digital media spends, but in the overall approach to digitisation. There is a renewed focus on digitisation of all customer touch points. Consumers are becoming increasingly comfortable with digital interfaces - from virtual showrooms to OTT to digital news subscriptions to e-commerce. So brands will continue to invest in this transformation and investments could be significantly skewed on to digital. Most of our conversations and engagements with our clients are in the areas of these transformations and building digital brands." However, digital advertising will take some time to get its due back. Shamsuddin Jasani, Group MD, Isobar South Asia, highlighted that 95% of the ad revenue still comes from traditional beauty, FMCG and auto brands, who weren’t fully operational during the lockdown. He predicts a 40% drop in the overall digital revenue this year. “Consumption has gone through the roof for various forms of content ranging from video, gaming to education. Ramayan and news viewership also gave TV a push. Unfortunately, the clients aren't able to keep up with the pace. So far, only 5% of ad revenue comes from a pure digital brand and 95% still comes from a traditional FMCG or auto brand. They’ll start spending in the days to come. Apart from that, e-comm players told me that 75% of their sales came back in lockdown 3.0. Hence, people are going to put their best bets on digital again. Lockdown did have a long-term impact because the ad spends have cut down,” said Jasani. Ahmed Aftab Naqvi, CEO and Co-founder, Gozoop says an ‘even bigger uptick awaits us.’ “Digital spends are going to grow exponentially in the post-COVID era. CEO’s, CFO’s &amp; CMO’s are experiencing the benefits of having a digital-only marketing strategy and once they have tested success, I don’t see them resorting to other forms of advertising, at least in the short to medium term. There will be an increased focus on martech and performance marketing strategies. I also expect inbound marketing and performance-led influencer marketing to become a critical tool in the arsenal of most digital first marketing teams.” Sharing why digital has seen unhampered growth year-on-year despite the volatile environment in India, Sanjay Mehta, Joint CEO, Mirum India said, “It was due to various advantages that it offers, including sharp targeting, being very measurable, being able to track the ROI well, very efficient to create and manage campaigns, usable for small and large budgets, ease of starting, stopping, and tweaking campaigns, and not needing to stay committed to a creative or a medium, for long periods of time, etc. For all these reasons, digital advertising has been growing for years now. But marketers were still spreading their spending across media, including TV, print, OOH, cinema, radio, etc. Since all these mediums saw a drop, digital became a natural choice.” Traditional brands who offer tangible products will also embrace digital in the days to come. Now, with this markets opening up, you should see much more activity from brands like mobile providers, who aren't termed as essentials but are important. Auto will see a boom because people will avoid public transport. But you will not go for a test-drive. This whole process will move to digital. Marketing will be around how safely it will be delivered it to you. So a lot of money will be spent on safety whether it is tourism, food, airlines, etc.” Google’s report titled ‘What is India searching for’ revealed how dependence on digital is rapidly increasing as time spent on smartphones in the first 3 week of COVID-19 disruption inched towards 4.5 hours per day and online video accounted for more than 70% of India’s total data usage. As a result, clients who have reached out to Gozoop lately are demanding digital-first strategy and Naqvi predicts that it will now get the lion’s share. “A lot of brands that are coming to us today and want a digital-first approach with some only wanting digital as the main channel. I feel that the future of brand building is digital. It’s not just here to stay but is here to lead. When it comes to the brands that have traditionally relied on mainline, there will be some tactical work that will be done occasionally, but that’s not to say that print and traditional will die. However, the portion of spends will flip. Digital spends will go up from 20-30% of the current total media spends to as high as 60-70% in the post COVID era,” shared Naqvi. The sudden transition to digital wasn’t really smooth for marketers. They were trying to figure out the market sentiment and how to communicate with consumers. Eventually, the importance of ROI was driven home. “The economic challenges of the current period do force brands to think sharper on ROI factors, where marketing spends are concerned. Hence digital as a highly measurable medium, becomes a first call. Even within digital, data-driven marketing and marketing automation, become a must-do, since these generate even sharper focus and enable far better ROI on spends,” said Mehta. There is a silver lining to this whole situation after all. Jasani predicts this consumer sentiment will pick up come Diwali. “This is going to be the best Diwali since the past 2 years. First two months will go in stocking essentials but come Diwali, consumers are going to step out and buy things. It will be a good thing for the country and economy, overall,” said he. The deal is expected to give the social media giant a stronger foothold in what is seen as Facebook’s largest market. While Facebook has been known for large acquisitions in the past (Instagram, Whatsapp and Oculus), the deal with Reliance Jio only gets it a minority stake. However, it could have some far-reaching implications. We reached out to some digital experts who spoke to us about the possible implications of this move. I believe this is just the start of a longer collaboration, which is going to be beneficial for both the companies and also going to change the entire landscape, help us evolve into the future. What we have witnessed in the COVID scenario, this deal is only going to accelerate that even in the post COVID scenario. Digital is here to stay and people realise its power now. With Jio, Facebook can now go deeper and engage with smaller towns and cities. It has a tremendous penetration but through all of its products and backing on Jio's plans on becoming a huge player in the market, I think the possibilities are endless. The future holds some great innovations in business that can be brought forward by this combination. I also think that this will help Facebook come into the payment thing in a much bigger way than through WhatsApp alone, so I do believe that this is a game changer for the industry. Understand that pretty much hundred percent of Jio customers come in after their Aadhar cards have been verified. Imagine that data now also synching up with Facebook data. So the opportunities are tremendous, from an advertisers perspective, reach, consumer and SME perspective. Sabyasachi Mitter, Founder and MD, Fulcro: On the face of it, the close to 10% stake purchased by Facebook in Jio Platforms is a bold move to get into retail e-commerce through Jio Mart. This will help both players in taking the challenge to the entrenched players like Amazon and Flipkart, especially in grocery retail by tapping into the reach of Jio and co-opting the local kirana stores. On paper taking orders and payments through WhatsApp is a game changer, however, we have to bear in mind that the Indian consumer behaves very differently from theory. For starters most kirana stores and small businesses already extensively use WhatsApp for order taking. The use of UPI and Paytm has become widespread and second nature. While people trust WhatsApp for communication and conversations where security is not much of a concern, whether they will trust WhatsApp payments over specialised payment solutions is something that time will tell. <keyword id="3054169" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Varun-Duggirala">Varun Duggirala</keyword>, Co-founder &amp; Content Chief, The Glitch: The FB-Jio deal is what one would call the coming together of two data super powers. While the implications for both companies to extend their reach and grow their data set is immense along with the possible e-payments and e-commerce implications it can drive (mainly through WhatsApp but through other social platforms that FB owns as well) what remains to be seen is the net neutrality implications this can have and where that balance will lie. But all in all, it’s definitely going to drive major competitive advantages for both parties. The aim is to grow and transform India’s digital ecosystem and the focus of the collaboration will be to enable new opportunities for more than 60 million Small Business owners across India. With communities around the world in a lock down, many of these entrepreneurs need Digital Tools, which they can use to find and communicate with customers to grow their business. Whatsapp Payments is in the middle of a beta trial for a million users and we are hoping to get regulatory approval, but this collaboration (with Jio Platforms) is meant to really fuel the small business side of the economy. As the Economy is in crisis the deal comes as a fresh air to the market and RIL stocks today closed at 10% gains. This deal will be a win-win deal for both the partners and the deal will play a meaningful role in mobile commerce space. With Facebook as a shareholder, Jio will be in a full-fledged battle with multiple internet-based businesses. This partnership will own a large chunk of hyper-local, e-commerce, payments, telco provider and advertising ecosystem. It will also provide a platform for both companies to tap growth opportunities in India, which ranks among the fastest growing economies and has the second highest number of internet users in the world. India is the next best thing, especially now that Mukesh Ambani has made it accessible by forcing down data charges and offering low-priced handsets and services in all Indian languages. We spoke to a few industry experts to identify these new opportunities that 2020 will bring forth for the industry and here is what they had to say: Will Scougal, Director of International Creative Strategy, Snapchat: I don’t think there’ll be one dominant trend but several interlinked trends that have emerged over the last decade all achieving scale and creating real shifts in the way we experience and interact with brands. Over the last few years people have increasingly shifted their attention to mobile and, as they have become more confident navigating the world with their handset, they’re looking for quality experiences. What we’ve seen at Snapchat is that people are choosing to spend time adding a creative layer to their world through AR (Augmented Reality). As this format continues to scale, both on Snapchat and beyond, we are going to see more innovative, useful, and immersive experiences being built by brands embracing the marketing benefits of AR as a full funnel format. In addition to the growing popularity of AR, we are also going to see premium mobile video content gain more viewers. As audiences rise, we can expect to see more quality made-for-mobile shows from studios, publishers, entertainers and brands who are adapting to the mobile mindset of people. With the emergence of OTT and data rates going down, there is a natural preference towards digitisation amongst younger audience. Equally, voice is so intuitive, it will be naturally driven more and more on a daily basis -- whether you are driving or use some voice assistant on your phone, which will be simplified with time. On the other hand, clients are also under-pressure to deliver results every quarter, hence, they will be far more interested in performance rather than just pure brand-building. Prathyusha Agarwal, Chief Marketing Officer, ZEEL: With consumption across platforms, the most dominating trend of 2020 would be brand and character love that transcends multiple screens. Viewers will share their dining tables and living rooms with our content on television satisfying the craving for anticipation of a new story, the first bite to savour the emotion and relationship with our characters every day. They will then stretch it across multiple screens and interactions binging on it, dipping in, dipping out and gorging on it through time and space. As broadcasters, we need to gear up our backend to tailor-make our content such that it is adept to the multiple platform front-end user interfaces. There is a shift needed from thinking of content development as an uncertain creative process to building a nuanced understanding the cultural core that makes viewers tick, what they want/ need, where do they need it and have the capability to evolve our craft to deliver that. To own multiple screens where stories and characters are loved beyond just television, content creators and curators, will have to manage the share of pie on each of platforms to maximise screen hours. Sameer Saxena, Chief Content Officer and Head of TVF: “For 2020, we will continue to strengthen our partnerships with OTT platforms and brands equally. We plan to venture into new genres like thrillers and romance amongst others. We will also explore non-fiction properties as there isn’t much happening in this space. Our aim is to release around 15 to 20 shows in the year including a few in regional languages starting with Marathi. In addition to new shows we're also planning the second seasons of some of our key shows like ‘Kota Factory’, ‘Cubicles’, and ‘Hostel Daze’.“ Dinesh Chhabra, CEO, Usha International: “The consumer durables sector has shown a consistent growth and Usha International Ltd leads this growth from the front riding on new product launches like the Bloom series and Racer fans, as well as the introduction of a whole slew of colorful new kitchen appliances. During this period of tough economy, Usha tightened its operating belt to squeeze out the inefficiencies to make itself leaner and more productive. You will continue to find a lot more digital adoption because the rates, while they have gone up, continue to be rock bottom in the country. And you will find that a lot of time that consumers spend will move into digital and hence the focus to continue to build brands and invest there will be one big trend that we look at. And as part of that, there are a lot of medium like TikTok that have suddenly come and exploded out of nowhere. We have recently worked with the platform and seen really good results so that'll be an area of focus. Secondly, while the economy has been witnessing a slowdown, there is still a room for a lot of premiumization. And there's a big trend in sustainability that is slowly but surely picking up momentum and is something we will see more of in 2020. Amer Jaleel, Group CCO &amp; Chairman, MullenLowe Lintas Group: I see content saturation coming. We have to start seeing consumers as audiences in the Media Age. Everybody is creating content with ease through apps. While this explosion leads to satisfying the creative urge among people and that surely is a good thing, but coupled with the march of platforms and production, this is leading very rapidly to content fatigue. Once we see our consumers as an audience, we have to account for the fatigue they have to overcome to see the frankly poor quality of brand content that most of us are putting out.
