Asked whether he feels Hindi movies are being unfairly treated in recent times, Kapoor said, "I will give the example of my own film. I will not talk about other films. Few weeks ago, my film 'Shamshera' was released. I didn't feel any negativity." "The film didn't run at box office, it is probably because the audience didn't like the film. Eventually it is about the content," he added. In recent times, mainstream Hindi movies like Ranveer Singh's "Jayeshbhai Jordaar", Akshay Kumar's "Bachchhan Paandey", "Samrat Prithviraj" and "Raksha Bandhan", along with Aamir Khan-starrer "Laal Singh Chaddha", failed to register big numbers at the box office. Kapoor said no one, including his father, late cinema icon Rishi Kapoor, understood what it takes to make a film like "Brahmastra", which has been mounted on a huge budget and is loaded with visual effects. "It's been so long... No one really understood what it takes to make a film like this because no one has really done this, especially people we know. "The film has been going on for so many years. I remember when my father was alive, I used to lie that I was shooting 'Brahmastra'. I used to hide it and say I'm shooting for some other movie," the 39-year-old actor said. He also credited Mukerji, the director of his two blockbusters "Wake Up Sid" (2008) and "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" (2013), for his growth as an actor. "I have known Ayan since 2008 when he narrated 'Wake Up Sid' to me. I didn't know him before that. He is someone who just came and narrated his entire story. He was sitting on the floor and he was narrating the film for me, saying it would take just 1 hour but it took 5 hours to narrate that film. "I really felt that energy from a young filmmaker and I was like, 'Wow, this guy really has a story to tell.' He is passionate about every word, every character and I could feel that energy. I think art is about energy. You have to feel the energy within other people." Kapoor said he is aware that he will not get another opportunity to do a movie like "Brahmastra" again. "It's not like that after 'Brahmastra', I will do only these kinds of films. I know I won't get an opportunity like this again. I hope going forward I get other opportunities to showcase other different characters that I can portray," he added. 'Shamshera' didn't work because content was not good: Ranbir Kapoor

<ul><li>From Ranveer Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar to Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera, recent Bollywood movies have been bombing at the box office.</li><li>Bollywood producers currently pay a fixed income and around a 55-60% cut of profits to big actors such as Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, etc.</li><li>Apart from theatrical collection, a big chunk of Bollywood’s revenue also comes from digital streaming rights and satellite before the movie is released, which is being recast.</li><li>Business Insider India speaks to analysts to find out if consecutive film flops will affect the revenue model and the acquisition of movies by streaming platforms.</li></ul>Bollywood’s recent big-budget releases like Lal Singh Chaddha, Shamshera, Prithviraj Chauhan and Ek Villain Returns have disappointed the audience, but the industry has always had its table profits to fall back on. Table profits refers to the large chunk of revenue that Bollywood makes from the sale of digital streaming, satellite broadcast rights and merchandise before the movie is even released in the theatres. However, after consecutive flops, Bollywood’s movies might lose their lustre with bidders, hurting table profits. Experts believe that streaming platforms and TV channels might get choosy with the movies they acquire and cut back on spending hefty monies. Sharing how the approach might change, Gautam Jain, partner at Ormax Media said, “There would be stronger linkages with box office performance now. Even the smaller films which don't feature big stars or directors, who are trying to look for the direct-to-streaming route, are being asked to go the theatrical route and then come back to streaming.” Elara Capital’s senior VP - research analyst, Karan Taurani told Business Insider India that currently around 90-95% of Bollywood movies are pre-sold with a few clauses. “If the collection number surpasses a certain threshold, producers will be paid more. If it goes down below a certain threshold, OTT platforms will pay less to producers.” After a string of big budget flops, producers might have to prove themselves at the box office first. “The OTT platforms are paying hefty money for these films. Now, with content not doing well, they will become stringent in terms of the budgets that they invest in. They will have to become selective and approach in some other way,” Taurani told Business Insider India. Are big Bollywood stars losing their shine? A Bollywood movie with established stars could be counted on to be a sure-fire hit at the box office. Not any more. Films with the likes of Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan seem to be losing their attraction, pushing producers to reconsider their fee structure. The recent releases headlined by big names have disappointed the critics and the audience to such an extent that even the production costs couldn’t be recovered. “Every recent film has seen a loss of anywhere close to 40-50% of their cost of production, not being able to recover (the costs) because theatricals have been a blowback,” Taurani said. Despite losses at the box office, big stars take home 55-60% of profits and a fixed income, analysts say. “Higher talent fees are going to stay for some time. But yes, not many studios will be willing, or producers will be willing to go ahead with those high fees now, given the fate of the last few films at the box office,” Jain told Business Insider India. This is likely to push the industry toward greater adoption of a revenue-linked model of payment for actors, Taurani said. “Already most of the actors have a fixed fee plus a revenue share, I think the fixed fee component might come down, wherein they will want to go for more web-share models.” However, renowned actors haven’t lost all the lustre as evidenced by the hefty ancillary revenues their movies have been drawing from streaming platforms and satellite channels. To illustrate, the Aamir Khan-starrer Lal Singh Chaddha, as per Elara Capital, was made in the range of ₹200-250 crore and has garnered only about ₹70-80 crore in theatres, but it is believed to be in the black after its table profits. “Perception [of big actor films] might be negative, but the kind of money their films draw on non-theatrical platforms is huge. Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan or Aamir Khan, most of these big actor films non-theatrically draw a huge amount of money. Aamir Khan's non-theatrical movie is already a plus film, they already have that kind of money on the table,” film critic Bharti Dubey said. However, with poor box office collections, Dubey said that correction is bound to happen. “Whether it is production, whether it is actors, correction is the need of the hour,” Dubey told Business a beat Earlier, Bollywood songs were also a huge attraction for music streaming platforms. Now, they are falling flat too, further affecting the industry’s annual revenue collection. “Music is one section that has taken a beating in the last few years because music has not been doing well. People are not paying attention to music. It used to be a huge chunk of revenue earlier, which is not there at the moment and that needs to be revived,” said Dubey. Analysts believe the tables could still turn for Bollywood. The industry has pinned its hopes on forthcoming releases like Brahmastra, Circus, Ram Sethu and Thank God to work a turnaround but a recovery looked difficult, said Jain. Dubey believes that 2023 would be the year of recovery for Bollywood.

Big actors take a major chunk of Bollywood profits, but will recent flops prompt content and revenue correction?

They aren’t just the latest Bollywood movies that couldn't bring Indians back to theatres — they’re also three successive releases of A-listers that have flopped. This lack of enthusiasm for Bollywood is not just affecting the actors and producers but also movie theatres which are banking on superhits to get back in the black – after a long period of pandemic-induced shutdown. Brokerage firms are worried that more Bollywood releases might not enthuse the OTT-saturated public to go to the theatres. It will affect footfalls, and have a cascading effect on ad revenues, the theatre chains’ ability to go in for price hikes and more. Several analysts quizzed Inox’s director Siddharth Jain about the same during the quarterly earnings conference call. Jain emphasised multiple times that bad movies would not have an impact on the footfall for its business. “Q1 [April to June] has been great but after that few movies have not done well. That does not mean that people will shy away from coming to the theatres… One or two movies not working, or one month not doing well, does not mean that people will refrain from coming to the theatre to watch a movie or the entire pipeline is bad,” he said. Yet, analysts are not mollified. They do not believe that the audience is ready to go back to watch ‘average movies’, especially since they’re spoilt for choice by multiple OTT options, in addition to traditional TV. When big movies flop, theatres lose as much as producers. “The most prioritized goal for multiplexes like PVR and INOX is to fill the theatre with audiences to maximise their profit. But flop movies fail them to accomplish this goal. He emphasised that the quality of movies that came out between April and June was “exceptional” and that had a big role to play in people’s enthusiasm for watching movies in theatres. “The consumer appeal for movie theatres is very much intact and it’s also the quality of content,” he noted. The theatres did a stellar March business thanks to South hits like KGF and RRR in addition to Kashmir Files and Gangubai Kathiawadi. In spite of the sales, the two listed movie chains — Inox and PVR both posted net losses for the first quarter of ₹239 crore and ₹478 crore in the fourth quarter, respectively. They’re still on the road to recovery and for that, they need more ‘recovery worthy movies’, and that can only come from Bollywood. According to analysts, while South movies helped in the past, only big Bollywood movies that are released across multiple screens can bring them the recovery that they need. <table Ranveer Singh’s 83 did average business, while Puspa released along with it, was the lone outlier that was a superhit. As per PVR’s own admission, in spite of high expectations of blockbuster performance from movies in the pipeline, they do not expect a full recovery for another six months. “Our sense is, by December of this year, where we have had a big run of films, effectively recovery should take shape fully because you must also understand that in a country like India, there is a very large segment of people who show up at the theatres only once or twice a year,” Nitin Sood, CFO of PVR, said. This whole struggle is inextricably tied to already low ad revenue, which is a big part of revenue for any multiplex business. Both PVR and INOX, despite a strong movie pipeline in Q1, have not yet reached their pre-Covid ad revenue figures. Reaching there will depend on good content. “Good content is very important for a client, because he knows that content will have footfall and there will be more people seeing his ads. There will be more eyeballs watching his ads,” Jain added. Till the movies release, it will be a wait-and-watch game to see if Bollywood delivers the blockbusters that the theatres desperately need. Jyala also said that Bollywood is expected to buck up during the second quarter of 2022 with mega films like Laal Singh Chaddha, Raksha Bandhan, Vikram Vedha, Brahamastra, Pathaan and Ram Setu. Bollywood and movie theaters alike have been waiting for a blockbuster, as most of the movies that have raked in the moolah this year are either South multilinguals or Hollywood movies. However, the official site of BookMyShow revealed that 54% of the Indian audience is more interested in watching Laal Singh Chaddha as compared to Raksha Bandhan. Even if it gets the opening as predicted by Inox, Aamir’s latest movie will fall short of the many superhits that he has delivered in the past. “Aamir Khan’s films have reported a collection of ₹280 cr per film on the average of his last three films as a lead actor. Hence, if the above (opening day) estimate of Laal Singh Chadha is reported, it will be considered below par, given the scale of the film,” said Karan Taurani, senior VP and analyst at marketing firm Elara Capital. This is only half of what it was in the month of March 2022. “Similarly, 14% of citizens were planning to visit a cinema hall per LocalCircles’ survey conducted in Dec 2021. This percentage rose to 41% in the March survey, and now stands at 22% in August 2022,” the report noted, adding that the footfall is likely to dip by half. The recent survey — based on the responses from 11,707 individuals across 302 districts of India — highlighted that 51% of the respondents said they have no such plans to watch a movie in the cinema hall or multiplex in the next 60 days. Meanwhile, 19% noted that they don’t watch movies in theaters anyway. Indian moviegoers might stay home this August in spite of big releases, says survey

Kapoor enjoyed a slew of critical and commercial hits in the genre — Rockstar in 2011, Barfi! in 2012, and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) in 2013 that placed him well ahead of the curve from his contemporaries like Imran Khan. But most, if not all his romantic avatars appeared to be drawn from the same template — the lost, young man. And Ae Dil Hai Mushkil would have benefitted more from releasing as a music album, than a film. During this time, Kapoor’s real-life romances–actual and rumoured—caught more attention from the media than his movies. He was referring to being secretly photographed by the paparazzi with his then-girlfriend, actor Katrina Kaif, on a beach. Success ultimately came with Sanju in 2018. Even though the whitewashed storyline let down the film, Kapoor’s performance and transformation were the talk of the town. While Indian film critic Saibal Chatterjee remarked that Kapoor “dazzled as Sanjay Dutt”, The Guardian stated, “Kapoor proves (to be) a lightweight film’s strongest suit”. Unfortunately, the hype created by Sanju well and truly died by the time Kapoor returned to the silver screen — four years later in 2022, with Brahamastra and Shamshera. Though the former raked in the collections, Kapoor’s innate magic seemed to be missing. The latter was better performed, but the muddled, slow-paced storytelling didn’t sit well with the audience. None could alter his image of a romantic hero. Perhaps Kapoor wasn’t meant for action, as advised by Dutt. Certainly, the few earlier glimpses that he provided with Besharam (2013) and Bombay Velvet (2015) left the audiences and critics unimpressed. For his upcoming films now, the actor has joined hands with directors known for delivering commercial hits —Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar by Luv Ranjan and Animal by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. The former belongs to the genre that has failed Kapoor in the recent past, and the latter is an action drama, where Kapoor is yet to deliver a hit. Only time will tell if this approach will give a much-needed boost to the 40-year-old star kid’s career, or drag him into the list of ‘has-beens’. Actor <keyword id="6357861" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ranbir-kapoor">Ranbir Kapoor</keyword> has tested positive for <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword>. He is on medication and living in quarantine at home. Ranbir's mother <keyword id="3608" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Neetu-Kapoor">Neetu Kapoor</keyword> took to Instagram on Tuesday to share her son's health update. Sharing a photo of Ranbir, Neetu wrote: "Thank you for your concern and your good wishes. Ranbir has tested positive for Covid-19. He is on medication and recovering well. He is in self quarantine at home and following all precautions." Commenting on Neetu's post, fans and followers shared their wishes for Ranbir's speedy recovery. Ranbir's sister Riddhima Kapoor Sahni also took to her Instagram story to share a selfie with her ailing brother. Neetu Kapoor had contracted the coronavirus in December last year while shooting for the upcoming film "Jug Jugg Jeeyo" in Chandigarh. On the work front, Ranbir has lately been busy shooting for Ayan Mukerji's action fantasy film "Brahmastra" alongside rumoured girlfriend Alia Bhatt. The film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna Akkineni and Mouni Roy. However, it is being speculated that shoot will be temporarily stalled with the lead actor contracting Covid-19. Ranbir's next release is "Shamshera" on June 25. The Karan Malhotra film is an action drama co-starring Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor, and is produced by Yash Raj Films.
