Hell, even the top competitors in distance running, like marathon breakout star and Olympic bronze medalist Molly Seidel, see what she's doing as "frankly inhuman."</p><p>"It's literally incredible," Seidel told Insider. "It's been so fun getting to follow her from marathon to marathon. Obviously Shalane is one of the greatest ever, if not like the greatest American marathoner, and it's just so cool to get to see someone who is in her retirement but still striving for greatness and still absolutely kicking."</p><div type="image" title="Shalane Flanagan." height="1667" width="2500" msid="87543985" hostid="261"></div><p>Flanagan - who won the 2017 NYC Marathon nine years after earning a silver medal in the 10,000 meters at the Beijing <keyword id="11896183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="olympics" source="Orion">Olympics</keyword> - retired from professional running in 2019. But after having "fallen back in love" with running, as she wrote in an Instagram post this September, Flanagan decided to step back into the spotlight for a feat of epic proportions.</p><p>The condensed marathon schedule this fall - Berlin, London, Chicago, Boston, Tokyo, and New York City in six weeks - presented a unique opportunity to check all of the world's major races off her bucket list in rapid succession. Perhaps the most ambitious, and certainly the most taxing, portion of that stretch came in the middle of October, when Flanagan conquered the Chicago and Boston marathons on back-to-back days.</p><p>"It's hard enough to double back three months after," Seidel said. "In my normal training, I'll occasionally have longer back-to-back days. But having to race like that, your body just aches after and your entire system is just so tired."</p><div type="image" title="Shalane Flanagan." height="1667" width="2500" msid="87543987" hostid="261"></div><p>Not only did Flanagan complete both races with time to spare on her three-hour goal, but she actually bested her Chicago time by a full six minutes the following day in Boston despite carrying the fatigue of having run an entire 26.2 miles less than 24 hours prior.</p><p>Seidel marveled at the accomplishment.</p><p>"That is so incredibly difficult," she added. "Being able to like pick yourself up after 26.2 miles going super fast and be like, 'Okay, not only am I going to do this faster the next day, but I'm going to do it on a course that is so much harder.' Going from Chicago to Boston, like Boston is no joke of a course, so that was the most impressive part: running faster the next day on an even more difficult course."</p><div type="image" title="Molly Seidel." height="1665" width="2220" msid="87543990" hostid="261"></div><p>Seidel knows a thing or two about succeeding on difficult terrain. The Team USA star <a href="https://www.insider.com/olympic-marathoner-molly-seidel-shocked-opponents-having-too-much-fun-2021-11">shocked the world by winning a bronze medal</a> at the <keyword id="11893428" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tokyo-olympics" source="Orion">Tokyo Olympics</keyword> in just the third marathon of her career. She became the first American woman to reach the podium in the event since Deena Kastor finished third 17 years earlier in Athens.</p><p>Though her surprise success in Japan catapulted her into a <a href="https://www.insider.com/molly-seidel-new-york-city-marathon-prep-regain-normalcy-2021-11">whole new level of superstardom</a> this summer, Seidel was previously well-known in running circles for her dominance at shorter distances during her time competing for the University of Notre Dame. Through it all, Seidel has cited Flanagan as a legend for whom she has "an enormous amount of respect."</p><p>"She's always been one of my heroes," Seidel said. "I got the chance to meet her when I was 18 years old. And I feel like she's been one of those people that's just been enormously influential and been such a good role model for the sport."</p><div type="image" title="Shalane Flanagan." height="1248" width="1664" msid="87543992" hostid="261"></div><p>Both Flanagan and Seidel will line up in Staten Island in the wee hours of the morning Sunday for the <keyword id="12453823" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="new-york-city-marathon" source="Orion">New York City Marathon</keyword>. Flanagan is poised to make history by completing the sixth and final marathon of her ambitious slate of majors this fall.</p><p>Seidel, meanwhile, says her goals for the iconic race through the Big Apple's five boroughs "are less place based or time based and more effort based," so she'll be content so long as she does "the absolute best that I can." And if enjoying the full experience is her top priority, surely seeing one of her heroes out on the course will help move the needle.</p><p>"I feel very lucky that I've gotten to have people like Shalane Flanagan to look up to," she added. "To be like, 'That's the kind of marathoner that I'm going to be.'"</p>

In her hometown marathon, Flanagan bested her Chicago time by a full six minutes despite carrying the fatigue of having run an entire 26.2 miles the day before. As <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/09/sports/shalane-flanagan-marathon-majors.html">The New York Times noted</a> earlier this month, "her patellas have hamstring tendons from cadavers."</p><p>Completing just one sub-three-hour marathon would be a feat for anyone, let alone a <keyword id="12299564" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="runner" source="Orion">runner</keyword> with reconstructed knees. Running six of them? Ambitious is an understatement. </p><p>"I had to kind of assess, can I do that?" she told POPSUGAR. "I'm retired, and I'm a coach, and a mom, and I've had two knee surgeries. So I just was like, I don't know if I'm capable of it, but I really want to have a goal again."</p><p>She's proven everyone - herself, naysayers, father time, and physics inclusive - wrong so far. Berlin, the first of her slate of six, took her just two hours 38 minutes. A week later, she shaved off three minutes to cross the finish line in London two hours and 35 minutes after she started.</p><div type="image" title="Shalane Flanagan." height="1667" width="2500" msid="86972371" hostid="261"></div><p>She placed 34th in Chicago on Sunday with more than 10 minutes to spare on her three-hour goal, and finished Boston in 2 hours and 40 minutes. Though she's run the race five times in her career, Flanagan says Monday's edition was "my best Boston, by far."</p><p>"I have NEVER loved it more than I did this morning," Flanagan wrote on Instagram a few hours after crossing the finish line. "... Running down Boylston meant more today than it ever has before."</p><p>A virtual version of the Tokyo Marathon is next on her docket. Though the in-person race has been postponed due to Japan's continued battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, Flanagan is planning to complete 26.2 miles in Oregon this coming weekend as a substitute.</p><div type="image" title="Shalane Flanagan." height="1563" width="2481" msid="86972373" hostid="261"></div><p>Flanagan will round out her tour in New York City. In 2017, she finished in 2:26:53 to become the first American woman to take first place in the race in 40 years. An Olympic medalist was 'prepared to implode' before running the Chicago and Boston marathons on back-to-back days

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11957085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="running" source="Orion">Running</keyword> long distances can be tough on the digestive system due to mechanics and blood flow.</li><li>To lower the risk of race-day runs, practice your diet and hydration and avoid greasy foods. </li></ul><p>Running a marathon isn't just a feat of strength, endurance, and perseverance - it can also be an accomplishment of the colon. </p><p>After all, <a href="https://www.insider.com/woman-stopped-9-porta-potties-during-marathon-got-personal-record-2021-11">pounding the pavement for hours</a> jostles your organs, <a href="https://www.thebloatedbellywhisperer.com/">Tamara Duker Freuman</a>, a New York City dietitian who works in a gastroenterology practice, told Insider. </p><p>It also shuttles blood away from the digestive tract and toward your legs, she said. That can leave some runners incontinent and others constipated. </p><p>Then there's early start times that can prevent some racers from fully relieving themselves before the gun goes off. Race day jitters don't help either, Wisconsin-based running coach <a href="https://www.vitalityrunningllc.com/">Carrie Zimmerman</a> told Insider. "The anxiety of running a race or running with new people can trigger" the bowels at inopportune times, she said. </p><p>In effect, digestive distress mid-race is common. <a href="https://journals.lww.com/acsm-csmr/fulltext/2019/06000/gastrointestinal_issues_in_athletes.2.aspx">Studies have shown</a> 30% to 65% of runners have an abdominal complaint.</p><p>But there are ways to lessen the chances of runner's trots on marathon day - and to make the need to go a little less comfortable if it does strike. </p><h2>How to reduce the risk of runs on the run  </h2><p>What goes in before a race affects what comes out and when. Spicy, fatty, or highly fibrous foods can backfire.</p><p>Jenn Savedge, a marketing professional in Virginia, learned this the hard way by treating herself to a hefty roast beef sandwich from a classic New York deli the day before the marathon in 2014. The race, she said, "was literally a tour of the city's Porta Potties."   </p><p>Instead, experts recommend small, <a href="https://news.sanfordhealth.org/sports-medicine/marathon-week-nutrition/">carbohydrate-rich meals the day before</a>, as well as a carb-rich breakfast <a href="https://www.runnersworld.com/nutrition-weight-loss/a27020321/runners-trots/">at least a few hours</a> before your start time. A bagel with peanut butter and banana is an example of a pre-race meal with a good carb-to-fat-to-protein ratio.</p><div type="image" title="A bagel with yogurt on the side." height="2274" width="3024" msid="87518124" hostid="261"></div><p>During the race, be cautious of gels made with lactose or fructose, rather than simple glucose, which can be harder for some people to digest, Duker-Freuman said.</p><p>Hydration leading up to and during the race is key too, but not with caffeinated beverages if your stomach is sensitive to it. </p><p>No matter what you eat and drink before and while running, it should be well-rehearsed. "Practice your prerun meal just like you practice your run," <a href="http://amygoodsonrd.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amy Goodson,</a> a sports dietitian <a href="https://www.runnersworld.com/nutrition-weight-loss/a27020321/runners-trots/">told Runner's World</a>. "Try a few breakfasts on long run days and see what works best." </p><p>Deirdre Keane usually bucks most of this advice, and has still completed 34 <keyword id="11957084" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="marathons" source="Orion">marathons</keyword>. But in 2014, her hurried breakfast didn't fully digest - and forced her to <a href="https://www.insider.com/woman-stopped-9-porta-potties-during-marathon-got-personal-record-2021-11">stop in nine Porta Potties in the first 16 miles</a> of the 26.2-mile race. </p><h2>What to do if the urge strikes </h2><p>Sometimes the race-day runs just happen. In that case, runners recommend noting ahead of time where the portable toilets will be on the route and tucking some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-toilet-paper">toilet paper</a> or baby wipes in your pocket or fanny pack.</p><p><a href="https://www.runnersworld.com/nutrition-weight-loss/a27020321/runners-trots/">Drinking cool liquids and slowing down</a> can help settle an upset stomach too. That "allows blood flow to redistribute to your GI tract, and it might help you feel better," Goodson told Runner's World.</p><p>Hoping the feeling will pass, though, isn't typically effective. If you can spot a portable toilet, Zimmerman suggests taking advantage of it. "I would just duck in and go quickly, and take care of business, and then oftentimes you'll run faster because you're more comfortable," she said. </p><div type="image" title="Shalane Flanagan." height="1563" width="2481" msid="87518125" hostid="261"></div><p>Even elite athlete Shalane Flanagan, who won the New York Marathon in 2017, <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/general/news/boston-marathon-2018-shalane-flanagan-ducks-out-for-13-second-bathroom-break/">had to make a pit stop in Boston</a> in 2018. It only cost her 13 seconds, and she soon caught back up with the pack, ultimately placing seventh. </p><p>But some runners pull off to a secluded-as-possible area to relieve themselves in nature, and the rare runner goes in their pants. <a href="https://www.insider.com/woman-pooped-pants-during-marathon-ran-with-it-in-shorts-2021-11">Doing so was Tamara Torlakson's choice</a> - and she wound up achieving a personal record just 13 months postpartum.  </p><p> "I didn't want one poop to mess it all up," she told Insider. </p>

Almost an hour into the race, fellow American runner Shalane Flanagan&#xa0;took a quick detour to use one of the restrooms set up just off the course.</span></p><p><span>Rather than racing on with the group, Linden chose to hang back with&#xa0;Flanagan and help her make up the lost time and rejoin the main pack. It was a display of sportsmanship that impressed many watching the race.</span></p><p>The race was undoubtedly one that Linden will never forget. Having come in second place in 2011, just two seconds behind winner&#xa0;<span>Caroline Kilel, taking home the top prize in 2018 came with an extra bit of relief.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>While the weather didn't do the racers any favors in their efforts, Linden didn't seem to mind the intervention from Mother Nature. The first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years waited for another racer to use the bathroom during the race and still won by 4 minutes

Revenue was up 15% year on year to $7.4 billion, while profit rose 23% to $655 million.</p>
<p class="p1">Nike's stock did still slump in after hours trading Thursday, as investors reacted to the news that the company's futures orders rose at their slowest pace in four quarters. However, futures orders were up against a tough comparative: This time last year they were growing healthily thanks to the World Cup.</p>
<p class="p1">Despite a weaker than expected forward demand, the company <a href="http://fortune.com/2014/12/18/weak-order-growth-puts-nike-shares-on-their-heels/">beat analysts' estimates on revenue and earnings</a>&#xa0;per share, and Nike continues to describe itself as a "growth" company. And one of the main levers? Premiumization. Nike is on its way to becoming a luxury (or at least a very premium) brand.</p>
<p>Speaking on Nike's second quarter earnings call, Nike's chief financial officer Don Blair said:</p>

<p>"...This is a trend that we've seen for quite a while now, which is that with the strength of our brand and the flow of innovation we have into the marketplace, we have been essentially trading the consumer up to premium product. And that's both on the apparel and the footwear side.</p>
<p>"...So what this is is that long term trend to building product that's premium for the consumer and can carry that price premium."</p>

<p>These are some of the products and strategies Nike mentioned it has been working on recently to elevate itself above competitors like Adidas, Puma and Under Armour, to become that premium brand.</p>
<h2>Structure shoes</h2>

They were priced at $245 but were only on sale for a limited time.</p>

It has tightened collections down so its Nike stores look more like walking into a luxury retail experience. Nike said on the earnings call that by being a better retailer itself, it is also working better with its wholesale partners, taking that same knowledge of tightening the assortment and driving that into the broader retail marketplace. The picture above is of Nike's women-only store in California. The women's market is also a huge growth area for Nike and it expects its women's business to be driving $7 billion in sales by 2017.</p>
