New Delhi, Nov 27 () The Centre is considering to make the BIS standards on piped drinking water mandatory to ensure safe and quality water to people, and the consumer affairs ministry has written to the jal shakti ministry in this regards.
 The proposal comes amid tests conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on drinking water, which found water quality in Mumbai as per standard but poor in many state capitals, including Delhi.
 "The Centre has the power to make BIS standard (on piped drinking water) mandatory. We have already written a letter to the jal shakti ministry to make it mandatory," Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan told reporters here.
 The minister said his mission is to ensure safe and quality water to people of not only the national capital but across India.
 He, however, spoke about the implementation challenge in case BIS standards on piped water are made mandatory. "If states do not follow standards, we cannot ban supply of water."
 The BIS is the national standard body established under the BIS Act 2016 for harmonious development of the activities of standardisation, marking and quality certification of goods.
 BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari said that under the BIS Act, there is provision that standards formulated for any products can be made mandatory.
 The BIS has sent a draft quality control order to the consumer affairs ministry, proposing that standard on drinking water as a product and standard on entire supply chain or control points should be made mandatory.
 To check quality of water, the BIS has conducted two phase of testing and plans two more rounds of sample collection and testing.
 In the first phase, the samples of drinking water were drawn from 11 different locations across Delhi and in the second phase, 10 samples were drawn from 10 locations of 20 state capitals.
 On November 16, Paswan released the second phase of the BIS study which stated that Delhi along with Kolkata and Chennai failed in almost 10 out of 11 quality parameters for drinking water.
 Samples of tap water collected from Mumbai were found to be compliant with the Indian standards for drinking water.
 However, other metro cities of Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai failed in almost 10 out of 11 quality parameters tested by the BIS, which is under the aegis of the consumer affairs ministry.
 Similarly, samples drawn from 17 other state capitals were not as per the specification 'Indian Standard (IS)-10500:2012' for drinking water.
 In the third phase, samples from the capital cities of northeastern states and from 100 smart cities will be tested and their results are expected by January 15, 2020.
 While in the fourth phase, it is proposed to test samples from all the district headquarters of the country and the results are expected by August 15, 2020. MJH HRS

For the first time, ISRO allowed common people to witness the launch. "It is a special mission for us. We will be using a PSLV rocket with four strap-on motors. Further, for the first time we will be trying to orbit the rocket at three different altitudes," ISRO Chairman K. Sivan had earlier told IANS. India now has an intelligence satellite in space that will watch ‘enemy radars’

Alphabet Inc-owned <keyword id="19902762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google" source="keywords">Google</keyword> has joined hands with <keyword id="19895876" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="election-commission-of-india" source="keywords">Election Commission of India</keyword> (<keyword id="20041622" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="eci" source="keywords">ECI</keyword>) to elevate authoritative information and enable people to easily discover critical voting information on Google Search and YouTube. The search engine has also put in place measures to prevent spread of false information, and label AI-generated data during the upcoming general elections, a blog post said on Tuesday. "We are collaborating with ECI to enable people to easily discover critical voting information on Google Search - such as how to register and how to vote - in both English and Hindi," Google said. It said that for news and information related to the election, YouTube's recommendation system prominently surfaces content from authoritative sources on the YouTube homepage, in search results, and highlights high-quality content from authoritative news sources. Additionally, Google said it is setting up processes to help audiences identify AI-generated content. "As more advertisers leverage the power and opportunity of AI, we want to make sure we continue to provide people with greater transparency and the information they need to make informed decisions. Our ads policies already prohibit the use of manipulated media to mislead people, like deepfakes or doctored content," it said. Google has already started displaying labels for content created with YouTube generative AI features, like Dream Screen. "Soon, YouTube will begin to require creators to disclose when they've created realistic altered or synthetic content, and will display a label that indicates for people when they're watching this content," it said. The blog post further said the company has begun to roll out restrictions on the types of election-related queries for which <keyword id="19896990" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gemini" source="keywords">Gemini</keyword> will return responses. The popular search engine said they have set policies around demonstrably false claims in areas like manipulated content, incitement to violence, hate speech, and harassment, that could undermine democratic processes. Google has set strict policies and restrictions around who can run election-related advertising on its platforms. These include identity verification, certification and authorisation by the ECI, and financier disclosures. "We take our responsibility for providing high-quality information for these types of queries seriously, and are continuously working to improve our protections," the blog post said. Google said it has recently joined the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), and pledged to help prevent deceptive AI-generated imagery, audio or video content from interfering with this year's global elections. Earlier, Google had introduced the Google News Initiative Training Network and the Fact Check Explorer tool to enable newsrooms and journalists deliver reliable, fact-checked updates to debunk misinformation. This 'mobile bus stop' will journey through four chosen areas in Bengaluru namely, Hosa Nagar, Seegahalli, Thursday Sante Area, and Byrasandra, across October. The bus stop will be installed from October 5 - 7 behind Baiyappanahalli Metro Station, Hosa Nagar, from where it will move to Seegehalli and Priyanka Nagar on October 9 - 10, at the Thursday Sante Area on October 16-18, and at Byrasandra on October 20-21. Designed to resemble a wooden, scaled-down version of a typical bus stop, the installation will have a ticket counter, seating arrangements, a shared space for waiting, and a newsstand. Those were the things that we expected but not much has been done there. However, on the second front of job creation, the government has done a lot. The budget talks about seven engines driven by PM GatiShakti that will definitely boost employment and increase the number of jobs. The budget also talked about 60 new jobs to be created in the next five years. That is relatively a longer process compared to the first expectation which was putting money in the hands of consumers, which would have yielded immediate results. A 20,000 crore boost in transportation infrastructure will definitely help in terms of job creation going forward. Another thing the government would have ensured on the rural front was increased allocation to MGNREGA or direct benefit transfer. In Fact they chose the other way. In terms of rural demand, when you're talking about putting money in the hands of rural consumers by increased MSP and increased MSP allocation, it is also going to have an impact on the inflation because if you increase the MSP, that eventually is going to increase the cost of agri products, primary inputs in food processing. So procurement is going to be increased. The current challenge ahead of most FMCG companies, which is managing inflation, probably would be aggravated, so I consider it to be neutral. Probably placing this money in the hands of consumers through MGNREGA or DBT would have ensured demand to remain robust. Even today, the 82-year-old duo Tom and Jerry connects with its viewers on an emotional level and reaches out to the inner child in us that lived in a happier universe. But Lt. Gen. David Thompson, vice commander of the USAF Space Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that "they are tracking about 270 different objects in the debris field," <a href="https://spaceflightnow.com/2019/03/27/u-s-military-sensors-track-debris-from-indian-anti-satellite-test/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Spaceflight Now</a>."Likely, that number is going to grow as the debris field spreads out and we collect more sensor information," he said.A software engineering company called Analytical Graphics Inc. The company - which "visualizes objects in space and time with unprecedented accuracy," according to its <a href="https://www.agi.com/products" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> - posted the video (embedded below) to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzhtc-rFbvM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">YouTube</a> on Thursday.The simulation uses what the company calls "standard breakup models" to approximately illustrate the clouds of debris particles that resulted from the test."We modeled 6,500 fragments, basically those that were larger than half a centimeter," Tom Johnson, the vice president of engineering for Analytical Graphics Inc., said.<h2>The remnants of 'Mission Shakti'</h2>Modi announced the test, called "Mission Shakti," during a live broadcast on Wednesday morning. The test destroyed a satellite called Microsat-R that weighed around 1,600 pounds.&#xa0;"Until now, only US, Russia, and China could claim the title. India is the fourth country to achieve this feat," he said during the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRZ9A3wQBfw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">broadcast</a>.Any collision in space creates a cloud of debris, and incredible energies are involved in anti-satellite events. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/earth-moon-distance-edge-of-outer-space-2018-5">closer a spacecraft is to Earth</a>&#xa0;when it's destroyed, the quicker its debris will fall back and burn up<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/earth-atmosphere-extends-beyond-moon-hydrogen-gas-cloud-2019-2"></a>.The satellite was lower than the International Space Station's orbit of 250 miles, as well as that of a weather satellite that China destroyed in 2007. (Debris from the Chinese test still orbits the planet today.) This test was about 40 miles higher, however, than the altitude at which the US destroyed one of its satellites in 2008.&#xa0;Right now, radar and other systems can track debris about the size of a golf ball or larger. It's a fairly large satellite," Johnson said.He added that the simulation makes conservative assumptions, such as a downward collision "to minimize the debris fragments." The calculations assume that the collision happened at a height of 175 miles (Microsat-R's last known altitude), and that the missile and satellite collided at a "closing velocity" of about 22,000 mph.Although the model estimates the number of tiny debris pieces to be over 6,000, Johnson noted that "in reality, we can't track the objects that small, so the number of trackable objects is gonna be significantly less."A narrator of the video said AGI is waiting for US Strategic Command to release information about the 270 objects being tracked."We look forward to the release of that information so that we can update our debris model and the rest of our analysis," the narrator said.
