By <keyword id="20756042" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lalit-k-jha-washington" source="keywords">Lalit K Jha Washington</keyword>, A jeweller, based out of both Mumbai and New Jersey, has been indicted for illegally evading customs duties for millions of dollars of jewellery imports into the US and operating unlicensed money transmitting businesses, a US attorney has said. <keyword id="20756041" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monishkumar-kirankumar-doshi-shah" source="keywords">Monishkumar Kirankumar Doshi Shah</keyword> (39) was arrested over the weekend and appeared on February 26 before US Magistrate Judge Andre M Espinosa in the Newark federal court. <keyword id="19916862" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shah" source="keywords">Shah</keyword> alias "Monish Doshi Shah" was released on a bond of USD 100,000, with home detention and location monitoring. He has been charged on a complaint with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of operating, aiding and abetting the operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business. From January 2015 through September 2023, Shah engaged in a scheme to evade duties for shipments of jewellery from Turkey and India to the US, according to documents. He would ship or instruct his conspirators to ship goods from Turkey or India, which would have been subject to an approximately 5.5 per cent duty if shipped directly to the US, to one of Shah's companies in South Korea, these stated. Federal prosecutors alleged that Shah's conspirators in South Korea would change the labels on the jewellery to state that they were from South Korea instead of Turkey or India, and then ship them to Shah or his customers in the US, thereby unlawfully evading the duty. He would also make and instruct his customers to make fake invoices and packing lists to make it look like Shah's South Korean companies were actually ordering jewellery from Turkey or India. During the scheme, Shah shipped millions of dollars of jewellery from South Korea to the US, prosecutors alleged. From July 2020 through November 2021, Shah operated numerous purported jewellery companies in New York City's Diamond District, including MKore LLC (MKore), MKore USA Inc. (MKore USA) and Vruman Corp (Vruman), it said. He used these entities to conduct millions of dollars in illegal financial transactions for customers, including converting cash to checks or wire transfers, the documents said. Shah would also collect cash from customers and use conspirators' jewellery companies, also located in the Diamond District, to convert the cash into wires or checks. The documents said that at times, Shah and his conspirators moved more than a million dollars of cash in a single day. In exchange for their services, Shah and his conspirators charged a fee. Prosecutors said that none of Shah's or his conspirators' companies were registered as money transmitting businesses with New York, New Jersey, or the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

Now arrested in connection with the ICICI Bank loan fraud case, Venugopal Dhoot during his heydays was not the one to simply sit on small achievements like <keyword id="6354248" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="videocon" source="Orion">Videocon</keyword> becoming the largest television set manufacturer in India. Dhoot who had an engineering degree from the University of Pune set off to Japan for a year to be trained at electronics companies. In 1986, he founded Videocon International, which aimed at manufacturing 1,00,000 TV sets a year. It entered into technical collaboration with the Japanese major Toshiba and from here there was no looking back. From colour TV sets, Videocon in the 1990s expanded into other verticals, such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, home entertainment systems and other small appliances. It pushed contemporary rivals like Mirc Electronic (Onida), Salora, Weston etc with affordable pricing. Its TV models like Bazooka and Bazoomba were the market's favourites in the early 90s. After having success in its consumer electronics and home appliances business, Dhoot expanded Videocon Industries into other areas, such as Oil &amp; Gas, cellular services and others. However, Dhoot's downfall started when it entered into the cellular service area with Videocon Telecommunications. It could launch commercial services only in 11 out of the 18 circles it held licences. In 2012, after the 2G spectrum case, the Supreme Court cancelled 122 licences issued by the central government in 2008, 21 licences belonged to Videocon. In the 2012 spectrum auction, Videocon won back licences in 6 circles but sold to the market leader <keyword id="6354287" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bharti-airtel" source="Orion">Bharti Airtel</keyword> and shut down operations. Moreover, in the late 90s South Korean giants like LG Electronics and Samsung entered the Indian market, which disrupted consumer electronics and appliances with the latest technology and quality products at affordable pricing. Though Videocon Industries had several verticals, its main cash cow was the consumer electronics and appliances business. As Videocon failed to face the challenges from rivals Sony, LG and Samsungs, its revenue got stagnated and gradually it sat on a pile of debt. Dhoot tried to pair debts by selling some of his assets. The company merged its DTH business with Dish TV. They sold ownership in some of their gas fields and telecom business, but it did not work. Finally, in 2018, it was dragged to the insolvency tribunal NCLT by its creditor. It owed around Rs 31,000 crore to the banks, including interests. At the request of lenders, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has conducted a consolidated corporate insolvency resolution process by combining Videocon Industries and the other 12 Videocon group companies. In June 2021, a bid of merely Rs 2,692 crore from billionaire Anil Agarwal's Twin Star Technologies to take over Videocon Industries was approved by the NCLT. This also went into controversy. Earlier this year, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) had set aside Twin Star's Rs 2,692 crore bid, directing to invite fresh bids. Though it was challenged before the Supreme Court by Twin Star, the creditors of Videocon Industries are still looking for a buyer. According to some sources, the lenders may even consider liquidation, if they fail to find a buyer for the company, which once was a success story. The Trump administration says it won't rule out hosting Kim Jong Un at the White House

New Delhi, Jun 16 () The Centre has communicated to the Delhi government that it can deploy rapid antigen COVID-19 detection kit in containment zones and hospitals in combination with the traditional RT-PCR test for faster diagnosis and effective prevention. The Centre's communication came in the wake of the recent spurt in coronavirus cases in the national capital. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has capped the procurement cost for rapid antigen test kit at Rs 450 following negotiation with the firm that produces it. It negotiated the price of the Standard Q COVID-19 Ag detection kit (rapid antigen test kits) with the South Korean company SD Biosensor, which developed it and which has its manufacturing unit in Manesar, Gurgaon. On June 14, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had written a letter to the Health Ministry, highlighting the need to augment COVID-19 testing in containment zones in the Delhi. The ICMR letter followed two high-level meetings Union Home Minister Amit Shah had with the Delhi government on Sunday."The Delhi government has already been told that they can deploy rapid antigen detection test for COVID-19 in the containment zones as well as hospitals in combination with the RT-PCR test to check the spread of infection," a health ministry source said on Tuesday.The rapid antigen test kits allow faster diagnosis without laboratory examination of samples. "It is critical to immediately augment COVID-19 testing capacity in containment zones of Delhi to prevent the spread of infection," ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava told Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan in the June 14 letter. It stated that Delhi has 40 RT-PCR testing labs in both public and private sectors. "The overall testing capacity of Delhi as on today is close to 18,000 samples per day. Testing remains a cornerstone in our fight against COVID-19 and therefore ramping up testing is essentially critical to track, trace and treat all cases of COVID-19," Bhargava said in his letter. According to the ICMR letter, symptomatic individuals who test negative should be definitely tested sequentially by RT-PCR to rule out COVID-19 infection, whereas a positive test should be considered as a true positive and does not need the confirmation by RT-PCR test. Standard Q COVID-19 Ag kit is available with the local vendor of SD Biosensor, the letter said, while mentioning the contact details. According to an ICMR advisory issued on Sunday, the Standard Q COVID-19 Ag detection can be interpreted as positive or negative after 15 minutes of putting the collected nasal swab into the well of the test-strip by appearance of test and control lines, which can be read with a naked eye, requiring no specialized equipment, it said. The maximum duration for interpreting a positive or negative test is 30 minutes. After that the test strip should be discarded, it said. New Delhi, Jun 18 () The Centre on Thursday pitched for a unified strategy for Delhi and its satellite cities to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, while the city government ramped up COVID-19 diagnosis by commencing testing through the rapid antigen method. While reviewing the coronavirus situation in Delhi-NCR, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the satellite cities like Gurgaon, Noida and Ghaziabad cannot be separated from the national capital in this battle. "The home minister favoured a unified strategy for Delhi-NCR to tackle the coronavirus," a home ministry source said. Besides Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava, senior officials of NCR districts and Ministries of Home and Health and ICMR attended the meeting. Shah assured the NCR districts that the central government will provide all support to them in their fight against the coronavirus pandemic, another source said. Delhi and its satellite cities -- an urban belt sprawling across three states -- has one of the highest population densities in the country. A large number of people reside in Delhi and work in the satellite cities or vice versa. The NCR comprises districts belonging to Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, the prominent ones being Gurgaon, Faridabad (both in Haryana), Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) and Ghaziabad (both in UP). "In view of the structure of Delhi-NCR region, all concerned bodies need to unite and work on a common strategy against the coronavirus pandemic. In this context, I met with Delhi Chief Minister and senior officials of Center and Delhi-NCR today to discuss how to evolve a strategy as soon as possible," Shah tweeted. On the meeting by Shah with officials of Delhi-NCR, a home ministry statement said the minister said an expert committee decided the rates for COVID-19 beds and treatment in Delhi, and these could be applied in hospitals in the NCR cities after consultations. It would be better to conduct COVID-19 testing through the new rapid antigen methodology approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) which will ramp up the testing capacity and help in early diagnosis and treatment, he said. Shah also directed officials from UP and Haryana governments to submit information about COVID-19 beds, ventilators, oxygen cylinders, ICU and ambulances available with them and their plan to augment these resources by July 15 to the Union Home Ministry so that a common strategy can be devised in the NCR in the battle against the virus, the statement said. Shah said there was need to scale-up testing for COVID-19 and provide treatment to those found positive. The home minister also suggested that the NCR districts can consider adopting Rs 2,400 charge fixed for COVID-19 test in Delhi. Meanwhile, the national capital commenced the new rapid antigen test at 169 centres in and around containment zones of the city. A total of 341 teams are involved in rapid antigen testing which makes results available within 30 minutes, an official said. People with mild symptoms or no symptoms at all can get themselves tested, another official said. A total of 7,040 people were tested for coronavirus of which 456 turned positive, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said. In the initial phase, tests will be conducted only on those who live in containment zones, he added. S G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of State for Home, said the Centre plans to conduct six lakh rapid antigen tests at these 169 facilities. Kejriwal tweeted, "Two important things happened today. COVID-19 testing rates in Delhi have been reduced to Rs 2,400 and rapid-antigen testing has started. I hope people won't face any problem in getting themselves tested now." Those who came to get themselves tested at a centre in Sunlight Colony in southeast Delhi said the entire process took only about an hour. The centre started operating at 10 am and by around 5 pm 125 swab samples were collected, a healthcare worker said. "After arriving here, we went to the registration desk. After waiting for about half-an-hour, we were tested. The testing process took only five to seven minutes," Alex Samuel, 20, said, adding, "The authorities told us the results will be sent via SMS on Friday." A healthcare worker at the testing centre said each testing kit costs Rs 450 and can provide results within 30 minutes as compared to RT-PCR test that takes three to four hours. The kits, called Standard Q COVID-19 Ag detection, have been developed by South Korean company S D Biosensor. The testing method involves looking for antibodies which are produced when the body is exposed to a pathogen. If a person has antibodies associated with novel coronavirus, it means the person is either COVID-19 positive or has recovered. The home minister has had a series of meetings with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, chief minister Kejriwal and senior officials in the last four days to strengthen Delhi's health infrastructure. On June 4, the Supreme Court had asked the Centre to convene a meeting of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana for easing interstate movement at all borders in the NCR. The White House did not dispute the remarks, but issued a statement in support of McCain and his family at the time.The White House has not yet publicly apologized to McCain, nor has it said whether Sadler would keep her job. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesDonald Trump.</div></div></div><ul><li>President Donald Trump's order regarding Chinese telecom company ZTE came just days after the Chinese government moved to provide cash to a venture that will help the president's bottom line.</li><li>HuffPost first reported on the ordeal Monday.</li><li>Trump's ZTE order has been admonished by lawmakers in both parties.</li></ul> Within three days of the Chinese government agreeing to provide $500 million in loans to an Indonesian theme park that the Trump Organization has a deal to license President Donald Trump's name to, the president stunningly ordered sanctions be rescinded against a major Chinese telecom company.<a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/trump-china-zte_us_5af9f701e4b0200bcab7fa66" target="_blank" rel="noopener">As HuffPost reported Monday</a>, the developer of that project just outside of Jakarta had secured the half billion in funding, in addition to another $500 million from Chinese banks, 72 hours before Trump's Sunday tweet on the Chinese telecom company ZTE. Trump's family business has a deal with that developer to include the Trump name on the resort, which also includes hotels and a golf course."President Xi of China, and I, are working together to give massive Chinese phone company, ZTE, a way to get back into business, fast," Trump tweeted Sunday. "Too many jobs in China lost. Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!"He added another tweet on the subject Monday, saying that ZTE "buys a big percentage of individual parts from U.S. companies.""This is also reflective of the larger trade deal we are negotiating with China and my personal relationship with President Xi," he wrote.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Andrew Harnik/AP ImagesTrump and Xi Jinping.</div></div></div>Instead of divesting from his businesses and placing them into a blind trust, Trump instead made an arrangement prior to taking office that put his two adult sons and a senior Trump Organization executive in charge of his interests, and the president continues to profit from them."You do a good deal for him, he does a good deal for you. Quid pro quo," Richard Painter, White House ethics lawyer for former President George W. Bush and currently a Democratic Senate candidate in Minnesota, told HuffPost. "This appears to be yet another violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution."The foreign emoluments clause of the Constitution prohibits the president from receiving any payments from foreign governments."This is one of the most blatant examples of the problems that can arise when you have a president who refuses to divest his business interests and doesn't seem concerned about conflicts of interest," Larry Noble, the senior director and general counsel of the Campaign Legal Center, told Business Insider. "There is clearly an appearance of a connection between Trump looking to release ZTE from US imposed sanctions three days after the Chinese government and Chinese banks agreed to provide a total of $1 billion in loans to a resort licensing the Trump name from his company."Noble said if China's government made the loan guarantee in hopes of influencing Trump's decision, it would be in violation of the emoluments clause. If there was an agreement that the resort would get the loans in return for the president waiving the sanctions, it would cross into bribery.Meanwhile, the White House did not respond to HuffPost's questions about whether China's decisions regarding the Indonesian venture had any connection to Trump's ZTE move. Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah referred questions about the project to the Trump Organization during Monday's press briefing. Reached by HuffPost, the Trump Organization said it was involved in the resort but did not answer questions about how much it would make from its deal with the developer.The recent actions against ZTE were labeled as not just trade enforcement, but a matter of national security. The company's phones were described as a security risk by the Pentagon and US intelligence agencies. Last year, the company, which is 33% owned by the Chinese government, was fined $1.2 billion for violating US sanctions against North Korea and Iran. The US government later banned the company from purchasing US parts for seven years after the conclusion was made that ZTE officials lied about their actions. In turn, that move led the company to essentially shut down.Trump's order was widely panned on both sides of the aisle. It came as a shock for some, as Trump had crusaded against Chinese trade practices on the campaign trail and in office, and has pushed his administration to aggressively take on those practices."You can't make this stuff up," Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-trump-zte-china-sanctions-decision-2018-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted Monday</a>. "Trump promised over and over again that he would bring back American jobs that have been outsourced to China. Instead of working to bring back outsourced jobs, he is now pledging to help create jobs in China."Trump recently enacted substantial steel and aluminum tariffs aimed to curtail oversupply of Chinese metals. Now, the Trump administration and the Chinese government are locked in negotiations over trade.
