The team did, however, add that domestic violence was increasingly prevalent and severe, especially in countries having <keyword id="23412547" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="patriarchal-societies" source="keywords">patriarchal societies</keyword> where violence against women is considered acceptable. Violence rates were found to be low in countries having a higher Gross Domestic Product. The analysis, published in the journal PLoS Climate, is the first to provide evidence of how climate shocks can influence national rates of physical and sexual intimate partner, or domestic, violence, the authors said. It also adds to global evidence regarding the social impacts of climate shocks, which can often be felt long after the events, thereby building a case for policymaking and action, they said. "All of this happens more often and with increased severity in countries that have patriarchal gender norms and where the use of violence against women is widely accepted as normal behaviour," lead author Jenevieve Mannell, from the University College London's Institute for Global Health, said. "Climate-related disasters increase stress and food insecurity in families in ways that can lead to increases in violence. They also reduce the social services often available for dealing with partner violence, such as police and civil society who are more focused on the disaster," Mannell said. Previous studies have found that rising heat and humidity increases aggressive behaviour. They proposed that varied types of climate shocks can take different times before showing their effects on violence against women, which they said could possibly not be captured within the two-year window of the study period. More than one in five people (almost 23 per cent) in employment worldwide have experienced <keyword id="15709508" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="violence-and-harassment-at-work" source="Orion">violence and harassment at work</keyword>, whether physical, psychological or sexual, according to a recent survey conducted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and its partners. The survey, titled 'Experiences of Violence and Harassment at Work: A global first survey', published on Monday, found that only half of victims worldwide had disclosed their experiences to someone else, and often only after they had suffered more than one form of violence and harassment, reports Xinhua news agency. The most common reasons given for non-disclosure were "waste of time" and "fear for their reputation", the survey found, adding that women were more likely to share their experiences than men (60.7 per cent compared to 50.1 per cent). Globally, 17.9 per cent of employed men and women said they had experienced psychological violence and harassment in their working life, and 8.5 per cent had faced physical violence and harassment, with more men than women experiencing this. According to the survey, 6.3 per cent of the respondents reported facing sexual violence and harassment, with women being particularly exposed. The groups that the survey found most likely to be affected by different types of violence and harassment included youth, migrant workers, and salaried women and men. Young women were twice as likely as young men to have faced sexual violence and harassment, and migrant women were almost twice as likely as non-migrant women to report sexual violence and harassment. More than three out of five victims said they had experienced violence and harassment at work multiple times, and for the majority, the most recent incident took place within the last five years. The ILO recommends that countries extend and update mechanisms to effectively prevent and manage violence and harassment in the world of work, increase awareness in this regard, and at the same time enhance the capacity of institutions at all levels to deliver effective prevention, remediation and support, to build people's trust in justice and ensure victims are supported. That's according to stark new data released Monday from the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/data/yrbs/pdf/YRBS_Data-Summary-Trends_Report2023_508.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.</a> The number of high school girls who said they were persistently sad or hopeless soared to almost 60% over the 10 year period from 2011 to 2021, the agency said.Reports of persistent sadness and hopelessness among teen girls are now double those of boys their age. "Think about what I just said: For every 10 teenage girls you know, at least one of them, and probably more, has been raped.
