<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">Twitter/@vy_vance</div></div></div>Images and video from an alleged <keyword id="46530" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sexual-assault">sexual assault</keyword> that happened on an Athens, <keyword id="15091" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ohio">Ohio</keyword> street last weekend have been making the rounds on social media, and Ohio University's police chief <a href="http://thepost.ohiou.edu/content/alleged-rape-apd-radar">has condemned bystanders</a> for filming the attack instead of alerting authorities.
OU student newspaper The Post <a href="http://thepost.ohiou.edu/content/alleged-rape-apd-radar">reports</a> that Police Chief Andrew Powers said documentation of the alleged crime on social media could help hold the perpetrator responsible for something he might have otherwise gotten away with.
"What is more disturbing are the social implications of what it means for someone to have been standing there watching this thing happen, videotaping it with their phone instead of getting involved and trying to help the victim," Powers told the newspaper.
The alleged attack happened during the university's homecoming weekend.
The female victim came forward to file a <keyword id="39493" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rape">rape</keyword> complaint after seeing a video on Instagram that showed a man performing a sex act on her in front of Chase Bank on Court Street, the small <keyword id="6360288" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="college">college</keyword> town's main drag.
Buzzfeed <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/an-alleged-sexual-assault-that-happened-on-a-sidewalk-during">has posted various tweets and screenshots</a> of the Instagram video. Many of these posts have since been deleted.
It's unclear if the man or woman in the video are OU students. Vice President for Student Affairs Ryan Lombardi said in a text message to Business Insider that the alleged assault occurred off campus and that the university will do anything it can to support the individual involved.
The response on social media has been mixed, with many students appearing not to take the alleged assault very seriously:

Ohio University Police Chief Criticizes Crowd For Filming Apparent Sexual Assault Instead Of Stopping It

Jean Carroll. But asked Friday if he planned to be at the New York trial, Trump said: "I may. I may."Engoron, a Democrat, has ruled repeatedly against Trump in the three years he's been presiding over James' lawsuit. Engoron was just 15 at the time.While attending Columbia University in the 1960s, Engoron drove a taxi — a fact he revealed a decade ago while ruling against then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg's plan to expand yellow cab service outside New York City. A state appeals court later reversed that decision.Engoron's rulings are rife with biographical information, part full-disclosure, part nostalgia. He's worked as a litigator and was a law clerk for 11 years for a judge in the same court where he now sits. Engoron also taught piano and drums and played keyboard in what he describes as a "moderately successful" bar band. He's been married three times and has four children, according to his Wheatley alumni page biography.Engoron joined the bench in 2003 as a judge on the New York City Civil Court, which handles small claims and other lesser-stakes lawsuits. In 2013, he was appointed an acting justice of the state's trial court and ran unopposed for a permanent post in 2015. His term runs until 2029, though New York requires judges at his level retire when they turn 76.A former law clerk, Michelle Bernstein Ravenscroft, said she remembered Engoron being "kind and approachable and that he was very invested in making sure his clerks had a good learning experience with him."Engoron frequently peppers his rulings with song lyrics, movie quotes and the occasional New York City history lesson. Could you be imprisoned for swatting a fly? Before joining the fray himself, the owner of one of the most successful independent movie chains in the country, Alamo Drafthouse, was&#xa0;happy to have a moment to reflect."I feel really blessed that this is my job," League told Business Insider. "I'm here working at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I saw three really good movies yesterday."48 hours later, League's festival only got better when the distribution company he cofounded, Neon, beat out Netflix to nab the biggest title at TIFF, "I, Tonya," for <a href="http://deadline.com/2017/09/i-tonya-neon-30west-tonya-harding-margot-robbie-toronto-film-festival-allison-janney-craig-gillespie-1202164919/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">$5 million</a>. The darkly comedic look at the controversial rise&#xa0;and fall of US figure skater Tonya Harding (played by Margot Robbie) will be Neon's first-ever Oscar contender when it opens in theaters later this year.But things drastically changed for League the following day, when the site <a href="http://www.pajiba.com/film_reviews/why-are-we-still-letting-devin-faraci-be-a-thing.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Pajiba</a> ran a story that revealed the Drafthouse CEO had rehired blogger Devin Faraci, the former editor-in-chief of the Drafthouse-owned Birth.Movies.Death movie site, who resigned after being accused of sexual assault last year. Faraci came back as a copy editor, and wrote film blurbs for this year's guide to&#xa0;the company's annual genre film festival, Fantastic Fest (which kicks off Thursday in Austin, Texas).Social media and the film world instantly went into an uproar, particularly because news of Faraci being back at the company came just 11 months after he stepped down. The result led to a Fantastic Fest programmer resigning, Faraci resigning for a second time, and numerous public apologies by League.For a company that's built a reputation on&#xa0;being young, hip, and fun - three things all&#xa0;of the major multiplexes in the world wish they were - the controversies Drafthouse is most familiar with usually come from a unique idea devised by League, or by the creative directors at one of the 29 Alamo Drafthouse theaters across the country.A recent example was&#xa0;over the summer, when Alamo Drafthouse held all-women screenings of "Wonder Woman." The negative reaction by some men on social media blindsided League, who had done an all-women screening for the first "Sex and the City" movie in 2008 in Austin with zero objections. The "Wonder Woman" version resulted in three lawsuits (two are still ongoing). And when League got word that a man showed up to one of the screenings at the Drafthouse in Brooklyn, New York, he almost cleared out another screen in the theater and had the gentleman sit and watch "Wonder Woman" there all by himself. But the idea never came to fruition."That's where sometimes I have to check myself," League said.&#xa0;&#xa0;But that's all fun and games to League, and plays well with Drafthouse customers. The Faraci controversy, however, put League and his company in the unfamiliar place of being on the wrong side of an issue for its audience.<h2>Building the fandom</h2>Alamo Drafthouse started out in Austin, Texas, 20 years ago, when League and his wife Karrie renovated an old building into a second-run theater. It stood out for the weird and unusual movies that played there, but what made it addictive was that the theater provided its customers with the option to eat and drink alcohol at their seats while watching the movies. As the company evolved and become a chain, so did&#xa0;the specialties of the menu and drinks (which often are themed to movies playing at that particular time at the Alamo). And with the evolution of online ticketing, and no need for ticket windows, Alamo Drafthouse lobbies are now bars. All of this has made&#xa0;the feeling of going to an Alamo Drafthouse more than just seeing a movie. It's an all-night experience. And most multiplexes and independent theaters have been playing catch-up the last two decades, trying to capture some of the cool factor Alamo Drafthouse has.League said all that he's doing is going back to the model of the 1940s and 1950s, before the multiplex was created, and individual theaters had to focus on marketing to their&#xa0;cities or towns to get patrons in the door."A lot of what we do is not that innovative," he said. "It really goes back to older traditions of establishing that bond with your core audience."I have seen that love for all things Drafthouse firsthand, and it's quite impressive.My first taste was in Austin in 2013. Alamo Drafthouse likes to do roadshows across the country in the summers. Past events have included a screening of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" in Wyoming, outdoors by the movie's epic Devils Tower location; or showing "Jaws" on a floating screen in a body of water, while everyone watches on inner tubes.The roadshow I attended was for "Snowpiercer," Bong Joon-ho's post-apocalyptic thriller set on a train. For the event, we all loaded onto a train and traveled to an open field about an hour away to screen the movie. League was there, as well as Bong, and even director Nicolas Winding Refn hopped on the train the last minute. But there were also 100 or so dedicated Alamo Drafthouse patrons who attended the event. After the movie, we all got back on the train and partied all the way back to the station, each car themed like&#xa0;the dystopian movie.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>A year later, I saw the Drafthouse fandom at its most insane when I attended Fantastic Fest (the 10th anniversary of the festival, no less). The event was located at Alamo Drafthouse's crown jewel in Austin, its South Lamar theater, which houses nine screens, two bars, an arcade, and seven karaoke rooms. But the attendance at the festival was even more incredible. Every night the crowds waiting to see movies were so big they would spill from the lobby to outside of the venue. It was a mix of locals and fanboys. Some of them had even traveled from other countries to be a part of it.&#xa0;The loyal Alamo Drafthouse fandom is an impressive sight in an era when&#xa0;interest in the moviegoing experience has diminished greatly. And League, who is a modern-day P.T. Barnum for all things Alamo, is certainly aware of it. With the internet and social media reaction king, the CEO believes being a tastemaker and understanding patron needs are&#xa0;vital to his business."Yelp, Facebook, the customer experience is job number one," League said. "You can't ignore data streams or any trends."But despite League's efforts, Alamo Drafthouse is currently swirling in a bad trend.<h2>The "Boy's Club" stigma&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;</h2>After the Pajiba story broke last Tuesday, League took to Facebook that evening and addressed the Faraci rehiring. He confirmed that he brought Faraci back into the company as a copy writer, and to write film blurbs - and he hoped people would understand that Faraci was entitled to a second chance."I understand there's some discomfort with the idea that Devin is once again employed by the Alamo Drafthouse," League wrote in the post. "However, I am very much an advocate for granting people second chances, and I believe that Devin deserves one. He continues to confront his issues and to better himself with the help of his friends and family. I am proud to consider myself a part of this process."Here's the entire statement:League's explanation didn't go over well. The post was flooded with hundreds of comments, many disappointed in the CEO doubling down on the rehiring.That was followed on Wednesday by Fantastic Fest international programmer Todd Brown resigning. He posted his own thoughts on Facebook, in which he said he was "embarrassed and ashamed" to have worked at Drafthouse:"Rehabilitation is a noble and worthwhile pursuit, to be sure, but it is also one that requires the involvement of a community," Brown wrote. "Forgiveness is fantastic but forgiveness is the sole purview of the person who has been wronged. Tim, bluntly, does not get to forgive Devin for Devin's alleged - and undisputed - sexual assault. Only the victim gets to do that. And where was she in this? Where was the concern for any victim of sexual violence and the message this would send to them? While I do not believe there was any malice in the decision to bring Faraci back there was, however, a clear, undeniable and arguably even callous disregard for the impact of this decision on anyone not named Devin Faraci."Here's Brown's full statement:Brown touched on an element that had many in an uproar, that League chose to rehire Faraci without consulting his employees or Faraci's alleged victims. (Last September, following Faraci tweeting about Donald Trump's now infamous comments during an "Access Hollywood" taping, a <a href="http://perezhilton.com/2016-10-11-devin-faraci-twitter-sexual-assault-birth-movies-death-film-critic-reviewer/?from=post#.Wb61F4qQzeQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">woman replied to him</a> and alleged&#xa0;that Faraci had sexually assaulted her. League <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/how-a-sexual-assault-accusation-against-a-feminist-film-blogger-shook-up-the-indie-film-world" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">was emailed</a> by another woman a month later, who alleged&#xa0;she had been sexually harassed by Faraci as well.)It was a troubling revelation. And it was especially troubling that League acted without consulting employees about it, given that&#xa0;he said to Business Insider, at TIFF, that&#xa0;one his major learnings&#xa0;in the 20 years of Alamo Drafthouse has been how important it's been to get employee feedback to better the company.&#xa0;"In the early years we would think, 'We're a good company, our employees like working here because it's a cool company,' but we never measured anything," League said. "Now we realize, 'Oh my god, why don't we just increase our communication with our staff to say how can this be a good place to work?' In August, two top employees of the Los Angeles arthouse staple Cinefamily <a href="http://variety.com/2017/film/news/cinefamily-sexual-harassment-allegations-brie-larson-1202538139/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">stepped down</a> after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced. The theater has since suspended all activity.It's very unlikely Alamo Drafthouse will be closing up shop over its controversy, but both instances are similar in that they shine a light on the male-controlled theater chain industry. However, for Drafthouse it goes a step further. Steeped in the male-heavy genre world, what drives the fandom of Drafthouse, its festival, website, and merchandise company Mondo, are the voices (and social media reach) of the predominantly male bloggers and fans that attend events and frequent the theaters. Take Fantastic Fest. It's incredible to see how male-heavy it is. I've never been to an event where the line to the men's room is&#xa0;twice as long as the women's."Anyone who has ever suggested that Fantastic Fest and the Drafthouse is just the geek friendly equivalent of the classic Old Boys Club, you have just been proven correct," Brown wrote at the end of his Facebook post. An MMA manager said Conor McGregor is 'a scumbag' and his only chance of fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov is in the streets

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The director of Netflix's "Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez," Geno McDermott, spoke to Business Insider about the making of the documentary series and the process of getting interviews and footage.</li><li>McDermott talked about being unsure if Hernandez was behind the gun for all the murders he was charged with.</li><li>McDermott shared his thoughts on future docs about Hernandez and working with Netflix.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul>Netflix's latest documentary sensation is the three-part "Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez" (now available on the site), which is a gripping look at the former NFL star who, while being a fan favorite playing tight end for the New England Patriots, was also linked to three murders.Directed by Geno McDermott, "Killer Inside" uses archival footage, security camera surveillance, courtroom proceedings, interviews with people who knew Hernandez, as well as jailhouse phone calls made by Hernandez, to piece together the life of the gifted athlete and what led to his downward spiral.After the Patriots drafted Hernandez in the fourth round of the NFL Draft in 2010, he rose to prominence in the Patriots' Tom Brady-led offense, which included a trip to Super Bowl XLVI in 2012 (in which Hernandez scored a touchdown in a loss to the New York Giants). Hernandez was thought to be another diamond in the rough found by coach Bill Belichick, as he was awarded a 5-year, nearly $40 million contract with the team in 2012.But Hernandez's life imploded the following year when he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder of Odin Lloyd, the boyfriend of his fiancée's sister. Hernandez was later charged with the murder of two men in a 2012 Boston drive-by shooting.Hernandez became front-page news coast to coast. Could an NFL star also be living a double-life as a murderer?In just over three hours, "Killer Inside" maps out what police found and what they believe to be Hernandez's involvement. But that's hardly it. McDermott weaves in Hernandez's youth in Bristol, Connecticut, which included watching his mother be physically assaulted by his father (a star high-school football player), and Hernandez being molested by an older child, according to his brother, Jonathan. McDermott also tracked down Hernandez's high-school teammate, Dennis SanSoucie, who said he and Hernandez had a sexual relationship, adding to the tabloid speculation that Hernandez was gay (SanSoucie also recounted their relationship to <a href="https://apps.bostonglobe.com/spotlight/gladiator/bristol/">The Boston Globe's Spotlight team</a> and Hernandez came out to his mother in prison, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/31/us/aaron-hernandez-brother-book/index.html">Jonathan Hernandez's book</a>). Then there's the theory that Hernandez's behavior was triggered by CTE, brain trauma caused by a lifetime of playing football.The public will likely never get a complete account of Hernandez's story and motives, as he committed suicide two days after getting a not guilty verdict in the 2012 drive-by murder case (he had previously been found guilty of the murder of Lloyd). He was 27 years old.Business Insider spoke to McDermott about how an 87-minute documentary on Hernandez he showed at a film festival led to Netflix turning it into a doc series, the interview he wish he landed, and why he's not convinced Hernandez was the gunman for all the murders he was accused of.This interview has been edited for length and clarity.Jason Guerrasio: It sounds like you got involved in 2017, which is around the time the second trial was starting. Aaron was already found guilty in the Odin Lloyd case.Geno McDermott: Yes. I had started this company called Blackfin and I was 28 years old at the time. Just bootstrapped it and selling projects here and there. So my agents at WME said I should come to meet these two writers who had been doing a book on Aaron Hernandez. But they couldn't sell it, for whatever reason. So in January of 2017, I met with Dan Wetzel and Kevin Armstrong (who are both interviewed for the series), and they had been following Aaron Hernandez all the way back to high school covering his football career. They also reported the first trial. We decided to partner.What was interesting about the second trial was that it seemed everyone had forgotten about Aaron. He was already a convicted murderer so the thought was he's a thug, he's got a bunch of tattoos, it's par for the course, we're over it he's going to be convicted again and spend his life in prison. So I was fascinated by that. I couldn't believe that everyone had dropped the story and these guys couldn't sell a book on him.Guerrasio: So you have no distribution lined up at this point, you're just making it.McDermott: Right. I was just so passionate about the story I decided to self-finance it. So we started getting interviews. We also were able to tap into the courtroom feed of the second trial. Our goal was to eventually interview Aaron Hernandez. Guerrasio: From the start, are you building a strategy on how to get him on camera?McDermott: There was no way we were going to get him on camera before trial and while he's on trial, so we were going to wait for the trial to end and then approach him. So in the meantime, let's go out and get as many interviews as we can get. We start calling everyone we could in Aaron's life. Whoever was willing to give us an interview, on a moment's notice we flew to interview them. Guerrasio: Who were the early people you got?McDermott: Stephen Ziogas [a childhood friend of Hernandez]. Mike Massey, Odin Lloyd's best friend. Carol Bailey, who was the neighbor in the flop house. We just started chipping away. Getting whoever we could get. And I think being in that courtroom and having the footage from the feed, that gave us another big amount of material. Guerrasio: But then Aaron commits suicide.McDermott: Well, before that, Jose Baez did a great job and Aaron was deemed not guilty. That was the first big bomb. Everyone's minds were blown. Then him committing suicide days later, that was the mega bomb. Guerrasio: Did you even get off the starting blocks of trying to get him for an interview in that time from the trial ending to him committing suicide?McDermott: There were so many press requests happening, we stepped back. Maybe a month later or two months later we would have started our outreach. Guerrasio: So you weren't even close to the ask when he died.McDermott: No, I don't believe so.Guerrasio: But you have this treasure trove of stuff from the court footage to the interviews, which culminates into you doing an 87-minute documentary titled, "My Perfect World: The Aaron Hernandez Story," which you submit to film festivals.McDermott: Yes. I submitted it to 12 different festivals and we got denied to every single one except for Doc NYC. I had thought that the film was just going to die on the vine.Guerrasio: Netflix has someone at the fest tracking it?McDermott: Yeah. My goal in making it, my dream was to make something that was good enough to be on Netflix. I was always going to go with them. They saw it there. And the thing with festivals is they really want stuff to be under 90 minutes, so that's why it was 87 minutes long. There were a lot of text cards to explain things. But there was a lot more to explore. Guerrasio: So "My Perfect World" didn't have Aaron's calls from jail and other things?McDermott: Didn't have the jail phone calls, Dennis SanSoucie, a lot of stuff.Guerrasio: Your pitch to Netflix is basically, "This movie is just the tip of the iceberg."McDermott: Yeah. So talking to Netflix we agreed it should be a doc series. Guerrasio: Now with Netflix backing you, do you go back and try to get Aaron's fiancée on camera, and his mom, and others?McDermott: Yeah. We reached out both during the making of the film and the series to everyone two or three times. Every family member. Every friend. Anyone we could find in our research.Guerrasio: Even Alexander Bradley, the person in the car with Hernandez for the drive-by shooting, that Jose Baez suggested in the trial was the actual shooter?McDermott: We may have. But we had footage of him on the stand. Guerrasio: He's a fascinating part of the movie because you flip things with him to make the viewer wonder, did he kill the two people in the car? Did Aaron really shoot him in the face? Having done this ultimate deep dive do you believe Aaron was the trigger man in all these instances?McDermott: Honestly, I still don't know. It's our job not to make those types of decisions in the series. Our job is to present all the facts and present all their perspectives and for the viewer to decide. We wanted to get as many people's perspectives as possible.Guerrasio: Having said that, did it frustrate you that you never answer the "why" question in this? You build all this up but there's never a clear answer of why Aaron did all this.McDermott: I think the "why" is what fascinates me and fascinates America about this topic. Most true-crime stories have a definitive ending: "This is the motive." But with the Hernandez true-crime story, it can be one of many things, and every time you put your finger on something, then something else pops up. It seems the story is still unfolding. There are still details. I wasn't frustrated by that, it was more I was fascinated by that. Guerrasio: How late in the game did the Hernandez jail calls come into your possession? Did you have a cut where there were no Aaron calls?McDermott: After we put the movie in festivals is when we started getting access to the phone calls. So when we went from scratch with Netflix we had them. But you had to be persistent. With the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests, they are frustrating because with your request letter you have to write it in a perfect way otherwise they reject it. Guerrasio: Doing some digging, I found in <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2018/10/23/sampling-aaron-hernandez-jail-calls/jXpzqlREvUOFZaCFhZpjPL/story.html">the calls Aaron made from jail</a> that he talked about wanting to go back to the NFL, being angry about the gay accusations, being mad that Belichick didn't have his back, why did stuff like that not make the cut? McDermott: I feel like with a story like this you could go on forever with those 900 calls. We felt we could tell the story in around three hours, so that was the guideline we put ourselves under. A lot of these true-crime series get accused of being too long, so you're trying to find the happy medium.Guerrasio: You felt there was a sweet spot in telling this story.McDermott: Exactly. We could have spent entire episodes on those court cases. They went on forever. You had to truncate them and present what you feel the viewer needs the most to know the story. Guerrasio: Looking back, is there a person you wished you got to interview?McDermott: We really wanted to interview Jonathan Hernandez, Aaron's brother. Obviously, everyone in the Hernandez family and his world has been reached out to a thousand times, so we were trying to be respectful of that and doing it the right way. But it would have been great to have his perspective in there. Guerrasio: Did he stonewall you?McDermott: No. He was very respectful and said, "Thanks for your interest, I just won't participate at this time." He was super nice and professional. Guerrasio: You say that it seems this is a story that won't go away. Something new always comes up. Do you feel you can tell more or is this the definitive story?McDermott: I think there's always more story to tell. I fell this is the definitive doc series on the topic, but it's hard to predict the future. But we're really happy where we landed and the response has been insane.Guerrasio: So if Netflix called tomorrow and asked, "What else you got on this?" You're not hanging up the phone.
