They don't turn over, and the margins suck."</a>But, then again, there are many reports that Apple, under Jobs, was indeed interested in building a set. BYD has denied reports that it put those plans on hold to wait out the election outcome.Other automakers have expanded their presence in Mexico, despite the uncertainty of the election and the prospect of tariffs under a second Trump term.Stellantis brand Jeep is building <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeep-first-ev-electric-wagoneer-s-photos-2024-1">its first electric vehicle, the Wagoneer S</a>, at its Toluca plant in Mexico, according to a breakdown of the company's 2024 manufacturing operations.The CEO of Chrysler, another Stellantis brand, also recently confirmed it was expanding a factory in Mexico as a "relief valve" for US truck production, after The Wall Street Journal reported the company was considering making its bestselling Ram 1500 truck south of the border.German luxury brand BMW, meanwhile, is investing 800 million euros ($861 million) in expanding its factory at San Luis Potosí, Mexico, which is expected to produce the company's next-generation Neue Klasse lineup from 2027."Imposing tariffs would be a deterrent. It would make it difficult if you're planning on exporting to the US," Stephanie Brinley, an automotive analyst at S&amp;P Global, told BI.She added: "It makes building a plant in Mexico more expensive and less attractive.<h2 id="63cc3482-b0ae-4cf4-b3a3-5bb23c5ee379">Costly dilemma</h2>Brinley added that many automakers with a significant US presence had been established in Mexico for decades, meaning it would cost billions and be highly difficult to shift production to the US or other markets in response to tariffs.<div type="image" title="The 2023 Toyota Tacoma" height="2468" width="3290" msid="115178408" hostid="261" sizebytes="731616"></div>"That would be a massive investment issue ... it would probably require a staggering amount of money and would not be something they could do quickly. Changing that manufacturing footprint would take at least five years," she said.Ultimately, Brinley said many US automakers may decide it's in their best interests to stay put, despite the tariffs — something that she said could lead to higher prices for consumers north of the border."That's where the tariff ends up hurting the consumer, because these companies are not going to just eat the tariff. Some, if not all of the cost would be passed on to consumers," Brinley said.Tesla, GM, Ford, and Stellantis did not respond to requests for comment from BI.

It could also force them to develop and expand their own autonomous vehicle offerings or seek out a partnership.Tesla's event is expected to feature both a look at a new autonomous vehicle, the rumored Robotaxi, and an accompanying ride-hailing network.Tesla released a teaser of what the app for the ride-hailing platform would look like in June. The concept involves Tesla using its network of owners to create a fleet of autonomous robotaxis that can be summoned through an app. Musk has suggested it could earn <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-robotaxi-app-make-money-repurposing-cars-autonomous-2019-4">Tesla owners who participate up to $30,000 a year.</a><h2 id="5aa434c3-95b2-4cb3-8e08-b3b791cebaca">A competitive threat to Uber, Waymo, and Lyft</h2>Tesla's entrance into the ride-hailing market will be a significant development for both Elon Musk's electric car company and the current players dominating it.There's been "considerable angst" from Lyft and Uber investors heading into the event, said Wells Fargo analyst Kenneth Gawrelski, who has a buy rating for Tesla.Gawrelski said that Tesla will likely offer a lower-cost service than <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/waymo-tesla-opposite-problems-driverless-cars-technology-competition-market-dominance-2024-9">Waymo, and there's also</a> "a cost advantage to Tesla on a per-ride basis and per-mile basis."Morgan Stanley analysts predicted earlier this month that Tesla will likely offer a discounted or free FSD software update to drivers who use the ride-hailing service, along with a lower-take rate to drivers to encourage faster adoption.The ride-hailing industry has so far been dominated by two major players — Uber and Lyft — and Gawrelski said Tesla's Robotaxi could mark a new challenger jockeying for market share. However, he said the long-term structure of the industry is what's truly at stake.Then there's the question of how long Tesla will take to actually launch such a service, with Musk known to show off upcoming products that are months or even years away. Musk said during <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-stock-tsla-earnings-call-report-live-updates-2024-7">Tesla's second-quarter earnings call in July that he would be "shocked"</a> if the first Robotaxi ride wasn't possible next year. But he also acknowledged he's been optimistic about timelines in the past.Wolfe Research analyst Shweta Khajuria, who has an outperform buy rating for Uber, Lyft, and Waymo owner Alphabet, told BI that she expects Tesla is still a few years away from reaching full autonomy."Eventually, Robotaxis could offer a larger threat as Tesla puts commercial use of them on the road, but Tesla is a few years away from reaching full autonomy," Khajuria said."That said, our analysis suggests high-single to low-double digit percentage downside to Uber's profits even in the worst-case scenario (which arguably is a low-likelihood event) that the vast majority of the autonomous driving does not include any Uber partnership (like the one Uber has with Waymo currently) and the majority of the autonomous market share comes at the cost of Uber losing share to AVs," she added.For now, she said the more immediate concern is Tesla's introduction of a new ride-hailing app. With millions of Tesla drivers on the road, the EV giant has the opportunity to scale its platform, she said."That could potentially put pricing pressure on Uber as well as Lyft that would be an increasing threat to Uber's growth, especially in the US," Khajuria said.Uber, Lyft, and Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<h2 id="bbbbd86f-7f57-4e2d-91a7-cf0e736db6b9">The silver lining for Uber? It might not be a 'zero-sum' game</h2>Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, who has a buy rating with a $300 price target for Tesla, said that this is "not a zero-sum game.""I don't view it as a negative for Uber and Lyft," Ives said. "I could argue it's a positive given autonomous and FSD would openly benefit Uber through a Waymo partnership."Ives said Robotaxi Day will be a historical day for the auto industry — and it will force Uber to create more partnerships.Uber has already taken steps toward furthering its autonomous vehicle offerings, recently announcing partnerships with Waymo and GM's Cruise. In September, Waymo <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://waymo.com/blog/2024/09/waymo-and-uber-expand-partnership/">announced</a> that its Waymo One ride-hailing service would be available to users in Austin and Atlanta exclusively through the Uber app. Waymo said the service provides over 100,000 rides weekly in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi also previously <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-ceo-khosrowshahi-elon-musk-tesla-robotaxi-autonomous-ev-2024-8">vocalized interest in possibly partnering with Tesla</a>."I don't think it's a zero-sum world," Uber's CEO said in August."If you look at food, for example, you got McDonald's, Starbucks, Domino's — every single major player out there has a direct channel to consumers," Khosrowshahi said. "But as they try to maximize the utilization of their restaurants, etcetera, they have come to the conclusion that they should work with marketplaces. I think the same is going to be true of cars."

Though its investors will have to wait much longer before they see any returns.Wood's firm Ark Invest debuted a new closed-end interval fund in 2022, allowing investors to throw as little as $500 into a vehicle that invests in private startups. Investors can buy and sell shares in the fund just as they do with stocks, with some restrictions."Our goal here is to provide the best venture portfolio in the world to everyone in the world, not just to the rich and the famous," said Brett Winton, who works closely with Wood as chief futurist at Ark Invest and is an architect of the firm's venture capital strategy.The fund, Ark Venture Fund, has now gathered close to $70 million in assets, some distance from venture giants like Sequoia and Andreessen Horowitz, or even Ark's other funds. SpaceX is Ark Venture Fund's largest holding, accounting for 13% of the fund's total assets, worth around $9 million.Winton said it's a subject he's frequently addressed in early meetings with founders.First, Ark produces reams of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ark-funds.com/articles">original research</a> on areas of investment. Winton said this research helps the firm win over teams because it demonstrates a grasp of their breakthrough technologies. "It means we can engage in really constructive conversations with them about their strategy," Winton said.Second, because Ark invests in both the private and public markets, it offers relationships with potential customers across the size spectrum of enterprises.Lastly, unlike a traditional venture fund, which has a fixed lifespan to invest the capital and return the profits to the fund's investors, Ark set up its venture fund to continue indefinitely, allowing investors to enter and exit the fund on a periodic basis.This provides flexibility to hold shares of companies after they go public, which can be particularly attractive for founders who are looking for investors with a long-term outlook and a higher tolerance for market volatility.In October, Ark invested at least $250 million into OpenAI's latest round, which pushed the AI startup's valuation to $157 billion.Most of that investment came from a related private venture fund that's only for high-net-worth investors. OpenAI makes up just 5% of the Ark Venture Fund's portfolio, which means it has less than $4 million invested."We would prefer to be able to write larger checks out of the venture fund than we currently can," Winton said.For that to happen, the fund will need to attract more investors.Though the fund is up 36% since its inception date, it's down 3% year to date, according to the website. The fee, 2.75%, is high relative to other interval funds, according to Morningstar, but it doesn't take carried interest or a share of profits.Winton said the fund could accrue assets into the billions of dollars; on a follow-up call, he walked back his comment, saying it's hard to know how big the fund could get."If that happens, then that'll actually become the story of Ark," he said. "Ark kind of changed venture capital."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Unemployment claims have already climbed following Hurricane Helene.</li><li>Additional disruptions from Hurricane Milton complicate the data collection for October's jobs report.</li></ul>Hurricanes continue to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-asheville-wcu-north-carolina-college-students-disruption-classes-2024-10">devastate communities</a> across the Southern US, and the fallout is already reflected in the latest economic data.As the election nears, it means Americans will have a murky picture of the economy, which consistently ranks as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2024/09/09/issues-and-the-2024-election/">top issue for voters</a>.It started with initial jobless claims data released by the Labor Department on Thursday, which surged far higher than expected in the first week of October, rising to 258,000 — a 33,000 increase from the week prior. This surge is likely due in part to jobs being affected by Hurricane Helene in Southeastern states like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-milton-tampa-florida-desantis-clean-disaster-dangerous-2024-10">Florida</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-destroyed-asheville-genz-residents-rebuild-climate-safe-haven-2024-10">North Carolina</a>.Unemployment claims are a useful gauge of the labor market, as they are updated weekly and can offer an early sign of large-scale layoffs.The impacts of Hurricane Helene and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-landfall-florida-housing-market-insurance-fema-2024-10">Hurricane Milton</a>, the latter of which made landfall on Wednesday, will likely distort upcoming economic data, particularly the October jobs report set to come out just four days before election day.The monthly jobs report is always a closely watched measure of the economy, but especially now as recent months have shown it cooling off. To stimulate hiring, the Federal Reserve began cutting <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-cuts-interest-rates-how-much-september-fomc-powell-inflation-2024-9">interest rates in September</a>, and the jobs report will strongly inform its path forward."In terms of Hurricane Helene, it is difficult to get a concrete estimate of the potential impact on October employment," Dante DeAntonio, Moody's Analytics labor economist, told Business Insider in a statement. "Next week's jobless claims data will provide better insight into the potential magnitude, but I wouldn't be surprised if the storm subtracted at least 50,000 from headline employment given the wide geographic area of impact."With the election less than a month away, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blockbuster-jobs-report-kamala-harris-election-trump-inflation-economy-2024-10">the economy is a focal point for voters</a>, especially as consumers still hold largely negative views of the post-pandemic economic situation. Positive data is especially critical for Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden, as the economy has been a weak spot for the administration — the University of Michigan's Index of Consumer Sentiment showed that while people were feeling more positive in September than in August, their economic views remained weak.<h2 id="42dd0eb4-851f-4507-a440-0543e54f480c">The timing of the disruptions from the hurricanes is key</h2>The Department of Labor will begin collecting data on Americans' employment statuses next week to inform the October jobs report. If people impacted by the hurricane are out of work and are continuing to experience disruptions to their businesses, the Bureau of Labor Statistics may mark them as unemployed.That means that the next jobs report, which comes out in November, could be abnormally weak, given that it will use data on job disruptions that occurred during a natural disaster. The household survey, which will be used to find October's unemployment rate and other labor-market figures, will cover respondents' employment situations from October 6 to 12, a Bureau of Labor Statistics spokesperson told BI in a statement. Similarly, the establishment survey, which provides the headline job creation numbers, covers the pay period that includes the 12th.The chaos from the storms could even affect data collection itself. Daniel Zhao, a lead economist at Glassdoor, told BI that "because Milton is hitting right when the reference week is for survey respondents, there are probably people who just can't respond to the survey because they're evacuated or they don't have access to the internet or power," adding that "October data will be particularly muddy and subject to more noise or greater revisions later down. "DeAntonio said that the ongoing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-strike-negotiations-union-leaders-break-down-after-two-days-2024-10">Boeing strike</a>, which involves around 33,000 workers and could affect the aircraft giant's suppliers, may also have a major impact on job growth."Put together, that means that headline job gains could be reduced by as much as 100,000 in October because of one-time factors," DeAntonio said about Hurricane Helene and the Boeing workers on strike.Despite the economy being at the forefront of voters' minds, an anomalously weak October jobs report might not be enough to shift how people will vote."I wouldn't expect these events to materially change how Americans view the economy before the election," DeAntonio said. "Strikes and severe storms routinely impact employment estimates, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics is typically proactive in communicating the magnitude of such events."The Bureau of Labor Statistics is aware of potential disruptions to the data. For example, it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm">noted</a> in its release last week Hurricane Francine, which hit Louisiana in early September, "had no discernible effect" on the employment data it collected."For severe weather conditions to reduce employment estimates, employees must be off work without pay for the entire pay period," a Bureau of Labor Statistics spokesperson told BI. "Employees who receive pay for any part of the pay period, even 1 hour, are counted in the payroll employment figures."Any effects from the hurricanes could lead to an October jobs report that shows a more pessimistic view of the economy than underlying conditions would suggest. Guy Berger, director of economic research at the Burning Glass Institute, told BI because of temporary disruptions from the hurricanes and strikes, "we're going to see a lot of noise in October jobs data that will obscure the more fundamental trend everyone is interested in: is the labor market still getting gradually cooler and weaker as it did earlier this year."Issues with supply chains caused by the storms' devastation could increase inflation in the coming months, but that wouldn't start to be reflected in published data until mid-November when the new consumer price index data is released.
