The one-hour trading session will mark the beginning of the new year in the Hindu calendar, or Samvat 2081. Generally, markets don't see much trade or activity during this one-hour session, given that muhurat trading is largely symbolic. It stems from the Indian tradition of closing our annual financial accounts on the day of Diwali and then starting afresh with the upcoming new year. Investors look to make their first profitable transaction of the new year and believe that any new investments during this one-hour window will bring them long-term prosperity. Like with usual trades, settlement happens on a T+1 basis. Gaurav Garg, who heads the markets desk at Lemonn, a new-age <keyword id="20300872" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-trading" source="keywords">stock trading</keyword> app, explains that retail investors usually make symbolic purchases of small quantities of stocks or invest in blue-chip stocks or large-cap stocks as part of their portfolio-building strategy during muhurat trading. Over the last 10 years, 8 out of 10 muhurat sessions have yielded positive returns for investors. In fact, four of these 8 sessions have delivered double-digit returns. Some of these outliers include 2021, i.e., at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, where Nifty’s muhurat-to-muhurat returns were a staggering 40.19%. Markets and Muhurat trading: How have Sensex and Nifty celebrated Diwali in the past?

The company's deal book saw a 28.8% QoQ and 16.8% YoY growth as its revenue grew to Rs 22,300 crore during the quarter and profits jumped to Rs 3,210 crore during the second quarter of FY25. Yesterday, the company posted a solid 21.2% YoY rise in its consolidated net profits, which stood at Rs 2,646.3 crore in the year-ago period. The company's revenue from the <keyword id="20069374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-services" source="keywords">IT services</keyword> segment was at $2660.1 million, an increase of 1.3% QoQ and a decrease of 2.0% YoY. For the quarter ending December 31, 2024, the company expects revenue from its IT Services business segment to be in the range of $2,607 million to $2,660 million. Wipro CEO and MD Srini Pallia said that Q2 was driven by strong execution, which enabled the Bengaluru-based firm to meet its expectations for <keyword id="19965932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-growth" source="keywords">revenue growth</keyword>, bookings, and margins. "We continued to expand our top accounts; large deal bookings surpassed $1 billion once again, and Capco maintained its momentum for another consecutive quarter. We grew in three out of four markets, as well as in <keyword id="19910880" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BFSI" source="keywords">BFSI</keyword>, consumer, technology, and communications sectors," he said. While the record date for bonus issue will be announced later, the credit of these bonus shares, priced at Rs 2 each, will be completed by December 15, 2024. He added that as long as Nifty holds above the 26,000 level, a "buy on dips" strategy should be followed, with an immediate short-term target of 26,500. On the Bank Nifty front, Yedve pointed out that the index started on a weak note and remained under pressure throughout the day, closing at 53,834. He highlighted the formation of a bearish Marubozo candle on the daily chart, which signals potential short-term weakness. However, on the weekly scale, Bank Nifty remains above the breakout point of a rounding bottom pattern, indicating strength. Look, it is practically impossible to time the markets. But, as a smart investor, markets hitting a fresh high is a good time to rebalance your portfolio, so that you can cushion your funds from any significant downturn that will invariably stem from any market downturns thereafter "When equities hit all time highs, there is a natural tendency of equity component of your asset allocation to breach the prescribed asset allocation. In such a situation, on should reassess the asset allocation and shave off excess percentages from the equity allocation to revert to the mean". Goel also suggests hedging a portion of your portfolio by buying naked long dated put options on benchmark index like Nifty 50. This way, you'd be able to benefit from a decrease in the prices of underlying assets, without having to own it. But most importantly, "At these crests, its important to shuffle your portfolio. Remove the crap, low-value stocks that might have made their in your portfolio during bullish phase, and replace with high quality stocks. Shift your assets more toward the large cap stocks/index funds where the volatility would be less or towards sector/market caps, which are less expensive on valuations", Goel continued. As for traders looking to make the most of the ongoing upward trajectory of the market, Osho Krishan, Senior Analyst, Technical &amp; Derivatives, Angel One, advises "capitalizing on the upward momentum by taking profits, rather than adopting an aggressive stance in the overbought territory". However, it’s essential to understand that not every market high signals overvaluation. There’s a key difference between markets reaching record levels and being fundamentally expensive. The combined <keyword id="20097096" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="market-valuation" source="keywords">market valuation</keyword> of eight of the top-10 most valued firms eroded by Rs 1,66,954.07 crore last week, with <keyword id="19896380" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Industries" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Reliance Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> and <keyword id="19903587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Life-Insurance-Corporation-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Life Insurance Corporation of India" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Life Insurance Corporation of India">Life Insurance Corporation of India</keyword> emerging as the biggest laggards, in line with weak trend in <keyword id="19925781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equities" source="keywords">equities</keyword>. Last week, the <keyword id="20945491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE-benchmark" source="keywords">BSE benchmark</keyword> slumped 1,276.04 points or 1.57 per cent. The market capitalisation (mcap) of Reliance Industries tanked Rs 33,930.56 crore to Rs 19,94,765.01 crore, the most among the top-10 firms. The valuation of Life Insurance Corporation of India (<keyword id="19903588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC" source="keywords">LIC</keyword>) slumped Rs 30,676.24 crore to Rs 7,17,001.74 crore. <keyword id="19934368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="State Bank of India" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="State Bank of India">State Bank of India</keyword> lost Rs 21,151.33 crore from its valuation which stood at Rs 7,35,566.52 crore. The market valuation of <keyword id="19906778" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Infosys" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> dived Rs 20,973.19 crore to Rs 7,35,277.28 crore and that of <keyword id="19950119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Consultancy-Services" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tata Consultancy Services" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Tata Consultancy Services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword> (TCS) tumbled Rs 19,157.77 crore to Rs 15,30,469.11 crore. Bharti Airtel's mcap got wiped out by Rs 16,993.56 crore to Rs 8,33,396.32 crore and ICICI Bank suffered an erosion of Rs 16,975.55 crore to Rs 8,25,201.23 crore. The valuation of <keyword id="19895995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-Bank" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC Bank" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="HDFC Bank">HDFC Bank</keyword> declined by Rs 7,095.87 crore to Rs 12,56,505.53 crore. However, the mcap of Hindustan Unilever jumped Rs 12,946.24 crore to reach Rs 6,45,808.65 crore. The valuation of ITC climbed Rs 8,406.26 crore to Rs 6,19,829.37 crore. Reliance Industries retained the title of the most valued firm followed by TCS, HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Infosys, LIC, Hindustan Unilever and ITC.

<keyword id="20253123" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="One97-Communications" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="One97 Communications" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="One97 Communications">One97 Communications</keyword>, <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paytm" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Paytm" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Paytm">Paytm</keyword>'s parent company reported its <keyword id="22373996" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1FY25" source="keywords">Q1FY25</keyword> results earlier today. While its operating <keyword id="19945274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue" source="keywords">revenue</keyword> for the quarter was Rs 1,502 crore, its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (<keyword id="19957744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EBITDA" source="keywords">EBITDA</keyword>) for the quarter was in negative, at Rs 792 crore. The net device subscriber base (for Paytm sound box) inched up to 1.09 crore during June 2024, up from 79 lakh in June 2023. On the <keyword id="19900016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="payment-services" source="keywords">payment services</keyword> front, the quarterly revenue stood at Rs 900 crore, which was largely dented due to closure of PPBL (Paytm Payment Bank Limited) accounts, owing to RBI directives. The same stood at Rs 2,342 crore during the year-ago period. For Q1FY25,the company registered a gross merchandise value (GMV) of Rs 4.3 lakh crore, and a net payment margin of Rs 383 crore. The company expects the annual payment processing margin (including <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi" source="keywords">UPI</keyword> incentives, which gets paid in Q4 of every financial year) to be in the range of 5-6 bps. On the financial and <keyword id="20257159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marketing-services" source="keywords">marketing services</keyword> front, the revenue for April-June 2024 was Rs 280 crore and Rs 321 crore, respectively. The revenue from marketing services, which includes advertising, and ticketing for travel, movies and events, was down largely due to seasonality of this business. Overall, Paytm's net loss the quarter stood at Rs 840 crore, significantly up from Rs 357 crore in the year ago period. <h2>Low Sounds from Sound Box, UPI </h2>The company highlighted that its per device subscription revenue had tanked, and expects it to rise in the coming days, as it pushed for new merchant signups and redeployment from inactive merchants. Additionally, the company is awaiting permission to begin onboarding new UPI customers, which would help it drive up the number of its monthly transacting users. As of June 30, 2024 the company's monthly transacting users (MTU) stood at 7.8 crore, down from 8.9 crore in March 2024 and about 10.4 crore in January this year. <h2>Rise in loan disbursal </h2>In its release, the company noted that it is "expanding its loan cross-selling by integrating more types of loans from our partners, including secured credit like loan against property and gold loans". The value of merchant loans it disbursed during the quarter was Rs 2,508 crore, and about 50% of these were availed by repeat borrowers. The average ticket size in this category also jumped up from Rs 2,25,000 to Rs 1,90,000, with an average tenure of 13 months. As for personal loans, the company disbursed loans worth Rs 2,500 crore during the quarter. Here, the average ticket size and tenure remained stable at Rs 1,35,000 and 16 months, respectively. About 1.1% of the monthly transacting users on Paytm avail such loans. The company also reported a rise in number of credit cards activated in June 2024, which stood at 12.8 lakh, as compared to 7.5 lakh last year. At present, the company has 6 active partners for credit card distribution. <h2>Compliance first approach </h2>The company saw in uptick in its indirect costs from Rs 1,220 crore in June 2023 to Rs 1,301 crore as of June 2024, which it attributed to higher marketing costs to create awareness regarding new partnerships in the payments business as TPAP (third party application provider), Its software, cloud and data centre expenses increased QoQ (from Rs 162 crore in March 2024 to Rs 182 crore in June 2024) due to one-time charges relating to the migration to the TPAP model. However, the company expects this cost to come down in upcoming quarters. Going ahead, Paytm will largely focus on reactivating existing dormant UPI customers. "Once we are allowed new UPI user onboarding, we will acquire new monetizable customers with discipline on acquisition costs", the release said. Apart from this, it also aims on enhancing credit distribution, expanding secured lending products , allocating more resources to insurance distribution and mutual fund distribution, "which offer large monetization opportunities" and maintaining a stringent focus on compliance first approach across their businesses. During trade today, Paytm's stock was trading at Rs 450, up by 1.06%.
