Between December 5 and 6, the Netflix mobile app reached approximately 3.6 million installs globally, a growth of 200% over the previous weekend. Sensor Tower's data further revealed that Netflix’s installs in November had remained relatively flat from October across both app stores worldwide. However, owing to StreamFest, the platform's downloads in December are off to a supercharged start. There was a 190% jump in first-time installs from approximately 551,000 on December 1 to about 1.6 million installs on December 2, all owing to an uptick of downloads from users in India. In the past, it was a laborious task to figure out each sign a person has, and then having to jump through the same hurdles again in order to figure out more about a romantic interest, future boss, or even a parent. These apps vary in functionality and purpose, but all fall under people's desire to try to figure out what is coming next in their lives.One of the most popular apps, Co-Star, uses NASA data to plot the birth chart, and currently has 7.5 million users, <a href="https://www.marketplace.org/2020/02/25/whats-behind-millennials-obsession-with-astrology/">as reported by Marketplace.</a> It also gives users daily horoscopes and the ability to read the birth charts of other users, which some have used to compare their signs with someone they're thinking about dating, living with, or anything that would require them to work together in close quarters.<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/15/style/astrology-apps-venture-capital.html">In 2019, the app was able to raise over $5 million in backing,</a> according to Pitchbook. Another up-and-coming app, Sanctuary, received $3.5 million. The app does let people use Instagram DMs to share content, though.</li><li>Labeling content as AI-generated won't hurt distribution. While on the phone with Dalton Smith, the first post on my own Threads feed was an AI-generated video of cats walking down a fashion runway — but I didn't see an AI label. Dalton Smith said that Meta encourages people to use these tags and that "it won't change your distribution."</li><li>Meta is still in testing mode when it comes to monetization. While Threads began <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-instagram-pay-for-engagement-threads-posts-creators-2024-4">rolling out a limited test</a> of creator monetization this year, the platform is still not "doing anything on ads at this time," Dalton Smith said. "We're thinking a lot about how we support creators over the long term, but right now we're just really focused on building out the app itself."</li><li>Also, weekends are apparently a great time to post. "We do find that content posted on the weekends may help drive higher engagement, which makes sense because Threads is such a real-time app," Dalton Smith said. She ultimately sought the help of a counselor. It was not until her most recent pregnancy that she also started to use an AI chatbot on the fem-tech app Soula, which she said helped with reducing depressive symptoms and reassuring her about her mental health."It tells me: 'Welcome back, LeRonika. Your reactions are natural,'" said Francis, who is based in New Iberia, Louisiana.The AI chatbot called "Dua" also sent her some videos that she could watch about self-hugging, a practice that could reduce stress levels."I feel like Dua is there more than anything. It really showed me: OK, this is what you could do. Make sure you make time for yourself, too, because that's important as well," said Francis.Soula was co-founded by Natallia Miranchuk and Andrei Kulik, who conceptualized a 24/7 AI doula that could close the gap in mental health support for mothers during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Rather than replacing medical providers, apps such as Soula aim to increase broader access to maternal healthcare. Healthcare providers said that these apps could also help reduce the burden on the healthcare system, where wait times can be long and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-nurses-strike-labor-union-staffing-shortage-covid-2023-1">workers face burnout</a>.Business Insider spoke with OB/GYN doctors and doulas, who largely welcomed the rise in AI chatbots because they can make information more accessible to patients.According to data obtained from Sensor Tower, Soula now has more than 35,000 downloads. The startup has fundraised over $750,000 and is backed by investors such as Andrey Mikhaylyuk, the former vice president of product at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unicorn-pitch-deck-flo-health-raises-200-million-series-c-2024-7">Flo Health</a>, a period tracking app.Miranchuk told BI that her experiences as a single mother of two and her work as a former maternity photographer inspired her to develop a supportive app for women. Initially conceptualized as a hub to connect doulas worldwide to those in need, the generative AI boom shifted the startup's focus to integrating a chatbot that could serve more populations."Women are shy to ask questions, even in the community, because they have the feeling that maybe 'as a mom, I should have known that, but I don't.' And she doesn't know where to go," Miranchuk said.The ease of customizing ChatGPT has spurred a wave of new AI-based chatbots like Soula. AI therapy apps such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wysa-mental-health-startup-raises-fresh-vc-funding-expand-coverage-2021-5">Wysa</a> and Woebot received over 1 million downloads, the data said.Corenia Smith, director of the Birth Justice Collaborative in Minnesota, said that while popularizing tools like chatbots can help broaden healthcare access, it is important to avoid a "one size fits all" and ensure that AI can reflect the communities it serves."There are cultural practices that exist and have existed for thousands of years that people still use," Smith said. "A human could talk about all their experience and what they've seen and give referrals. While there's Medicaid coverage for doulas in several states, not all private health insurance plans cover these expenses. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0266613821003120">Long wait times and socioeconomic inequality</a> also contribute to increased levels of stress and lack of healthcare usage among mothers and pregnant people."Traditionally, it's been something that's been available only to folks with a lot of money and a lot of resources. The people that benefit the most from doula care are those that might not trust the healthcare system," said Dr. Devon Rupley, an attending physician and OB/GYN specialist at NYC Health. For $22 per hour, she helped improve the chatbot by using it "hand-in-hand" during her pregnancies, adding in her expertise.While asking questions on Google could yield more informational responses, Pacheco said mothers would want something that provided "more of that reassurance that Google wouldn't."For Armani Grant, a Soula user who became pregnant at 18, Google felt overwhelming. The chatbot allowed her to ask questions that she wouldn't feel comfortable asking her mother. Pacheco said many women she's worked with reported similar experiences."They might even feel incompetent to ask the question, which no woman should ever feel, but with my history of working with people, they definitely tend to revert to: I'm sorry, I'm asking this question for some reason, and that might just be because of the societal pressure that more medicalized doctors have put on people that they don't give the time and day to us," Pacheco said.The app isn't meant to completely replace a doula. Moreover, retention rates of AI healthcare chatbots can be low, said Johannes Eichstaedt, a computational social scientist and assistant professor of psychology at Stanford University. The high dropout rates for healthcare apps are "an elephant in the room," he said.At the same time, Pacheco said AI bots can help "calm nerves" and fill the gaps when patients feel they are "bothering" their healthcare providers."AI isn't like a healthcare provider to give you guidance, but it's supposed to be there to give you a little bit more comfort," Pacheco said.

On Thursday, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-loses-4-top-executives-ahead-of-robotaxi-event-2024-10">Elon Musk</a> will unveil a vision for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/ride-hailing">ridesharing</a> service powered by his company's autonomous vehicles. His main competition on the technology front is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/waymo-tesla-opposite-problems-driverless-cars-technology-competition-market-dominance-2024-9">Waymo</a>, owned by Google parent Alphabet. On the ridesharing side, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-ceo-criticizes-ev-tariffs-supports-chinese-makers-climate-solution-2024-10">Uber</a> is the one to beat.Who will win? Strangely, the company with no <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-self-driving-cars-work-and-their-safety-2023-2">autonomous vehicles</a> could prevail. <h2 id="269ce340-3c49-43dd-a1c1-6916010ddb9a">Uber's flexible, inexpensive business model</h2>Uber stopped developing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fully-self-driving-car-tech-needs-decades-to-develop-2023-10">driverless cars</a> years ago. Instead, it redoubled efforts to create a dense, two-sided marketplace of riders and drivers in the US and several other countries. It took well over a decade to get this up to scale. Today, consumers open the Uber app because they know there will likely be loads of cars nearby to pick them up. And drivers come to Uber because they know there will be many riders waiting and willing to pay.Creating <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nfx-partner-pete-flint-explains-focus-on-network-effects-2019-5">network effects</a> like these is really difficult. But once they're established, they are very hard to compete with. This is reflected in Uber's market value, which stood at $160 billion this week, close to a record. The other benefit of running a marketplace is that you don't have to pay for much. Uber doesn't buy and maintain cars. It doesn't really employ drivers in most jurisdictions. And if demand drops, Uber's costs fall too because it doesn't have to share as much revenue with drivers. This flexible, capital-light business model works. In the second quarter, Uber generated $1.7 billion in free cash flow.<h2 id="be439f03-2078-4ecf-99ea-83c49d7825ca">A robotaxi future</h2>What happens if Tesla and Waymo driverless cars replace human drivers? One scenario is that these companies build their own ridesharing networks. Without having to share revenue with human drivers, they could offer cheaper rides and undercut Uber. This understates how expensive and complex it will be to run a huge autonomous ridesharing fleet. It also undervalues Uber's existing network and its direct relationship with millions of users. When investors started worrying about this potential threat to Uber earlier this year, Bernstein analysts did a deep-dive into the technology and the emerging business models. What they found is that running a robotaxi fleet is expensive and loses some of the attractive elements of Uber's approach. "There are real challenges around scaling a pureplay autonomous network, including the underlying technology, regulatory approvals, building a large-enough supply-base to run a high quality network (especially during peak hours when consumers need the service the most), and ultimately getting customers to adopt the service," the analysts wrote in a recent research note. "Along the way, we think Uber and Lyft can continue to play the role of demand aggregator and strategic partner, already operating networks at scale."<h2 id="56b00e3b-4223-4820-b249-519108cf8598">The fixed costs of robotaxi fleets </h2>The Bernstein analysts estimated that about 350,000 to 400,000 robotaxi vehicles would be needed to effectively replace the current rideshare networks in the US. These cars can cost roughly $150,000 each, partly because they are loaded with high-end sensors. That means just getting the cars ready would cost more than $50 billion, according to the analysts. (Tesla could cut this expense drastically because its robotaxis may be much cheaper, but Bernstein analysts worry the core technology might not be as good). These vehicles will have to be replaced every few years, too. Then there are many other costs that, crucially, are fixed rather than flexible. With Uber's current approach, it doesn't pay most of these expenses: <ul><li>Maintaining and cleaning the cars and all those sensors</li><li>Remote human monitoring assistants who can take over if anything happens</li><li>Cloud costs to store all the data from the robotaxis</li><li>Parking </li><li>Charging the cars </li></ul><h2 id="bd62fc86-e844-492e-8dfd-cf064be90829">Deadheading</h2>A bigger problem may be "deadheading." This is when robotaxis drive around with no passengers. With Uber, when human drivers aren't giving customers a ride, it doesn't pay. With robotaxis, most of those fixed costs remain, even if no one is on board. "The fixed fleet model has its drawbacks," Bernstein's analysts wrote. "We estimate Waymo's network was running with 60-70% 'empty time' in a day and 30-40% deadhead miles as of May."<h2 id="d2eee7d1-67f2-45ce-8b38-95c3d9024cc2">The uber aggregator</h2>One way to avoid deadheading is to have a steady supply of users ordering rides all the time. Who has amassed the most demand here? Uber by far. For example, the Uber app was downloaded about 6 million times last month, according to Sensor Tower data. Tesla's app was downloaded roughly 500,000 times, while Waymo got around 200,000 downloads. Uber is an aggregator of demand. Tech commentator Ben Thompson writes a lot about aggregation theory and how powerful it is on the internet. If you pull together enough demand, that attracts more suppliers, which improves your service even more. New users come, creating extra demand that pulls in even more supply. And so on. Thompson even wrote a newsletter in 2017 about how Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi was an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://stratechery.com/2017/ubers-new-ceo/">experienced aggregator</a> from his days running online travel agent Expedia. No matter how good Waymo and Tesla's autonomous technology is, they need distribution. They must get bums in driverless car seats quickly, regularly, and at huge volumes to cover the fixed costs of running their robotaxi fleets. This is where Uber comes in. It has already struck deals with Waymo and Cruise, another AV company, to have their driverless cars be part of the existing Uber rideshare network. "The rideshare platforms can be valuable strategic partners for AV players given the challenges associated with scaling a network," Bernstein's analysts wrote. "In particular, we believe that Uber offers valuable access to a large and active rideshare audience, with an already-scaled OpEx base, thus it can be a source of incremental demand and more efficient network management."<h2 id="86a9ff91-5ec7-468d-95bb-390c25b29293">An unusual situation for Google</h2>While Musk is used to dealing with expensive, complex hardware, this is a pretty unusual situation for Alphabet. Google is probably the ultimate online aggregator. Its search engine aggregates most of the western world's questions and desires. When people type in a query, millions of online businesses jockey to provide the answer. Google doesn't pay for most of this content, it just sells relevant ads next to the results. This supports one of the most profitable businesses in history. Compare this to the robotaxi situation, and the shoe is on the other foot. Waymo is doing all the hard work here. It owns the cars and develops all the sensors and other technology. It must pay to maintain the fleet. If anything goes wrong, Waymo is on the hook. Meanwhile, Uber is getting new supply to add to its existing network. When this happens, the network usually becomes more useful and attracts even more users.

Multiple AI Tutors started their jobs in August and September, according to a LinkedIn analysis by Business Insider.Since <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-new-company-xai-website-2023-7">xAI's launch</a> in July 2023, Musk, who also heads SpaceX and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/waymo-cofounder-tesla-robotaxi-data-strategy-self-driving-2024-10">Tesla</a>, has pushed for the startup to rapidly develop AI and advance the "collective understanding of the universe." This includes launching its own generative AI program called <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-grok-elon-musk-ai-chatbot-2023-12">Grok</a> on the social media site X (formerly known as Twitter), <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter">which Musk owns</a>.Musk has previously said that "<a target="_blank" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/elon-musk-says-xai-public-210338600.html">public tweets</a>" would be used for data training, and X <a target="_blank" href="https://techcrunch.com/2023/09/01/xs-privacy-policy-confirms-it-will-use-public-data-to-train-ai-models/">changed its user privacy policy </a>to allow the site's data to be used to train AI models.The company isn't the first Silicon Valley startup to rapidly hire data annotators for non-English languages. These languages are underrepresented and less common in written form on the internet, therefore requiring additional data to train large language models.X could help Grok improve its LLMs with a continuously updated data supply, although it's seen a drop in active users. According to Sensor Tower data from September, the X global mobile app's daily active users were down 15% year over year and down 28% compared to October 2022, around the time <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter-reach-agreement-to-close-acquisition-deal-2022-10">Musk acquired the company</a>.Major advertisers like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-x-twitter-advertising-revenue-decline-report-2023-12">Disney and Apple</a> have also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-joins-list-major-companies-leaving-elon-musk-x-2023-12">pulled spending </a>away after Musk endorsed antisemitic views on X, which has seen reduced content moderation. Social media researchers told Business Insider that users, for fear of missing out, often wait to change their digital habits until new social sites demonstrate there's frequent enough — and relevant — activity on the platform to join in.Much of the new pull toward Bluesky can be attributed to the platform finally tapping into that "network effect," Jonathan Bellack, the director of Harvard's <a target="_blank" href="https://asml.cyber.harvard.edu/about/">Applied Social Media Lab</a>, told Business Insider. Enough people now seem to have joined the site to reach a critical mass, so users don't feel like they're missing out on content on other platforms or losing their online community by switching, he said.It also helps when the people who make the switch have some social capital, too."Hello Less Hateful World," Mark Cuban, the billionaire entrepreneur, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="" href="https://bsky.app/profile/mcuban.bsky.social/post/3laqxchlxvw2e">posted</a> on Bluesky on Tuesday last week, announcing that he'd made it his new primary social media platform. While still somewhat active on X, Cuban has reposted lists of users he recommends following on Bluesky in an effort to rebuild his social media community on the new platform.In an email to Business Insider, Cuban said he likes Bluesky better than the alternatives."The variety of content and engagement is improving daily," Cuban said. "The different verticals are filling out as sources of news and information as well."Cuban said Threads "also has value." So he'll be posting there, too, but he'll prioritize Bluesky going forward. The Cost Plus Drugs cofounder has 8.9 million followers on X, 659,000 on Threads, and 384,700 on Bluesky.Representatives for X did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.<h2 id="111f5e87-99fe-4c84-936d-4cefab40255c">How Bluesky compares</h2>Estimates from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.similarweb.com/">Similarweb,</a> a digital market intelligence company, said daily active users of the Bluesky mobile app in the US increased 73% the week after the election, rising 40% more — to 2.6 million daily users — by the following Thursday. That's compared to 31.2 million for X and 4.3 million for Threads in the same time period.A spokesperson for Meta, which owns Threads, told Business Insider that the platform has seen more than 15 million signups in November, with more than one million signups per day for almost three months. The spokesperson added that the company has been "pleased to see Threads' steady growth since it launched last year."But Meta's sprawling, interconnected brand has "somewhat muddied" Threads' appeal to users who are turning toward decentralized social media, said Stephen Lind, an associate professor of business communication at USC Marshall School of Business. That may be a reason Similarweb found Bluesky drew in more traffic than Threads in the immediate aftermath of the election.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.similarweb.com/blog/insights/social-media-news/x-traffic-peak-deactivations/">Data</a> from Similarweb indicates Election Day also saw a surge of deactivations on X, with more than 280,000 people closing their accounts worldwide in a single day. Research by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://sensortower.com/">Sensor Tower</a>, a market intelligence firm, shows X's daily active users have stayed flat since the election, while Threads' jumped 8% — and Bluesky's more than 119%.Lind said Bluesky "provides a compelling alternative" to X, especially for users who don't appreciate Musk's approach to social media."Consumers, time and time again, show us that they will put a brand in jeopardy if the leadership is associated with ideology the consumers don't care for," Lind told Business Insider. "The catch is, though, that for many there has to be a viable alternative, or that principled behavior sometimes takes a backseat."A spokesperson for Bluesky told Business Insider that the platform aims to give users more choice and offer creators independence from being locked into specific platforms."It's clear that people want an open and transparent social network that puts users first," the Bluesky spokesperson said. "We've heard from users that they're receiving incredibly high levels of engagement from real people, and that most importantly, they're having fun again."<h2 id="26b20535-ac0f-465e-84ae-931c90a46c72">Challenges ahead</h2>But not everyone is switching. Advertisers are still noticeably absent from both Threads and Bluesky, and the similarities to pre-Musk Twitter aren't a selling point for everyone.Jack Dorsey, who co-founded both platforms, said in May that he decided to leave Bluesky because it was becoming <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jack-dorsey-bluesky-twiiter-nostr-interview-2024-5">too much like Twitter</a> and was "literally repeating all the mistakes" Twitter made — namely concerning content moderation, which Dorsey said is largely at odds with how a decentralized platform that is not owned and controlled by one colossal tech company should run.A few weeks ago, Bluesky had less than 1 million daily users in the US, "so the acceleration is tremendous," said David Carr, an editor at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.similarweb.com/">Similarweb</a>. "It is very, very, very early to see whether this is kind of a momentary blip for Bluesky or something that lasts, but I personally see potential."

The company said in an April investor presentation that it reached 90% of 13- to 24-year-olds and 75% of 13- to 34-year-olds in more than 25 countries. While 18% of teens said Snapchat was their favorite this fall, 28% ranked it as their favorite in the fall of 2023.Ultimately, interest among teens can be both a blessing and a curse for social-media apps. US officials and state politicians have been going after Big Tech in recent months over how they protect the safety of their teen users. Fourteen attorneys general sued TikTok this week, alleging that the social platform damaged the mental health of its young users. Meta faced a similar lawsuit from 42 attorneys general last year.Instagram is meanwhile rolling out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-teen-accounts-parental-controls-default-meta-social-media-2024-9">mandatory teen accounts</a> for those under 18 years old as it adds safeguards to protect its younger users.
