<ul><li><strong><keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword>’s promise to turn net profit positive in a year has cheered investors.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Margins in its core food delivery business has hit a multi-quarter high.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>The worry? Monthly transacting users and gross order value has declined versus the previous reported quarter.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Nomura believes Zomato will find it difficult to achieve double-digit contributory margin with high growth in the long term<br /></strong></li></ul>Two years after it listed on the bourses, Zomato is on a recovery path. The stock which hit a high of over ₹150 per share fell sharply subsequently to below ₹50 a piece. However, the last quarter (Q1FY24) has seen a recovery from that level and it has now surpassed its listing price of ₹76. <br /><br />The stock has been rising steadily in the last three weeks, after its Q4 earnings report where it turned EBITDA positive in its core business, without including Blinkit, its quick commerce business. EBITDA is net income (earnings) with interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation.  <br /><br />Moreover, the management also promised to turn positive not just at the consolidated adjusted EBITDA level but also at the profit after tax level in a year. Financial services company, JM Financial says this commitment is the ‘cherry on the cake’. <br /><br />“Tough macro posed growth headwinds but management showed urgency on profitability and that was despite the Gold programme launch,” said Jefferies. Zomato Gold is a subscription plan that offers free deliveries within a 10-kilometre radius for orders above ₹199. During the quarter, as many as 30% of the gross order value, from 1.8 million customers, came from Gold. <br /><br />The Gold plan could hurt its contributory margins (CM) because of its inability to charge every order. Yet, as of Q4, its CM in core food delivery business are comfortable after hitting a multi-quarter high. Contributory margins represent the incremental money generated for each unit sold after deducting the variable portion of the costs.<br /><br />“The core business milestone was achieved mainly on the back of solid expansion in the food delivery contribution margin to 5.8% in Q4 vs 5.1% in Q3. This was because profitability levers such as improvement in restaurant commissions and ad income, and lower discounts/variable cost offset the adverse impact of Gold launch,” said JM Financial. <br /><br /><strong>Ordering effects <br /></strong><br />After the post-pandemic boom effects faded away, a lot of consumption patterns have changed, also evident in consumer spending on fast food — impacting growth in quick service restaurants. These headwinds have been impacting Zomato as well. <br /><br />The growth in Zomato’s food delivery business seems to have flatlined. Food gross order value declined 2% quarter-on-quarter, even as it grew 12% year-on-year. Moreover, its monthly transacting users (MTU) declined by 5% QoQ to 16.6 million, while growing at 6% YoY. <br /><br />Apart from the one-time impact of its decision to exit from 225 cities, the company attributes MTU decline to optimised marketing spend and withdrawal of the human support interface for abusive customer cohorts. <br /><br />“Also because of Zomato Gold, the MTUs have come down and not gone up because we do see an impact of clubbing some orders in the same households, which might have just a single membership,” Akshant Goyal, chief financial officer of Zomato said in an earnings concall. <br /><br />The management, however, remains confident about food delivery ordering going up in the first quarter of FY24. Analysts, on the other hand, are not too confident about their ability to sustain growth beyond the first quarter as summer holiday and IPL impact during April/May are one-off events. <br /><br />Its other businesses, however, continue to display good growth. Blinkit’s gross order value grew 17% QoQ, while order volume grew 24%. Revenues of Hyperpure, its business to supply ingredients to restaurants, grew 13.5% QoQ. <br /><br /><strong>Offsetting margins with growth <br /></strong><br />While it’s on a path to profitability, Zomato is also caught between a rock and a hard place — of growth versus margins. To boost growth, it will have to go in for discounts – the lack of aggressive discounting by all players is already visible in the moderation in food ordered during the IPL season, generally a big occasion for online food platforms. <br /><br />This year, the IPL spike in food ordering was at a modest 7% for the industry as compared to the 2020 IPL when it was over 50%, as per Redseer. This time, there were no high <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/ipl-2023-sees-tier-2-cities-order-more-on-swiggy-zomato/articleshow/100673879.cms">decibel ads along with deep discounts.</a> <br /><br />Like other players in the business, the company will also find it tough to keep up with the high margin trajectory, while also chasing growth. <br /><br />“Overall, we lower our growth assumptions for its food delivery’s gross order value growth, from around 20% to around 17%, but raise our FY24F contributory margin estimate from 5.8% to 6.5%. We continue to believe Zomato will find it difficult to achieve double-digit contributory margin, with high growth in the long term,” said Nomura. <br /><br /><strong>Restaurant commissions grow but may hit an ONDC wall <br /></strong><br />In the last two years, the company was also able to improve take rates or the commissions it charges restaurants consistently. Its take rates are now close to 18%. <br /><br />“Broadly, with our take rates, the mission is to be competitive, and we are lower than what the competition is charging. So, as we continue to add more value to restaurant businesses, we expect some improvement in commission revenue going forward,” said Goyal. <br /><br />But competition is heating up in the sector. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has breached the territory that was hitherto dominated by Zomato along with Swiggy. <br /><br />On the face of it, it might seem like restaurants might be offered better terms on ONDC. While Zomato will be able to compete with ONDC on efficiency and also even overall costs – as third party deliveries might be costlier– HSBC Global Research believes that it might flatten growth. <br /><br />“Estimates for food delivery revenue in the long term remain largely unchanged. Our short-term estimates change slightly as we build in a marginally slower increase in take rate,” the research firm said. <br /><br />In spite of short-term and long-term challenges ahead, Zomato seems to have settled into its listed company status to deliver value to investors by chasing topline growth instead of customers, with discounts.<br />

Other than that, the Gold status the card confers will get you late checkout and an occasional room upgrade.</p><p>These aren't the best cards for everyday spend. They should be paired with more rewarding cards. Marriott loyalists can get huge value from its credit cards, but an unusual agreement between AmEx and Chase means you can't have all 3. Here's how to choose.

"And media is collateral damage."</p><h2>How does Facebook decide what a 'reputable publisher' is?</h2><p>Mead added that the past year was an&#xa0;"inflection point," where the way news content was delivered became "more of a liability to Facebook than an asset."</p><p>Facebook told some publishers that content from reputable publishers will surface on the news feed based on the new algorithm, <a href="https://digiday.com/media/losing-hope-facebook-tells-publishers-big-change-coming-news-feed/">Digiday reported</a>. It didn't, however, specify how it would define a "reputable publisher" or how publishers may expect their traffic to be impacted.&#xa0;</p><p>The Financial Times welcomed the move to recognize and support trusted and reliable news and analysis. But it said that a sustainable solution to the challenges of the new information ecosystem required further measures.</p><p>"In particular, a viable subscription model on platforms that enables publishers to build a direct relationship with readers and to manage the terms of access to their content" is what is required, said Financial Times CEO John Ridding.</p><p>"Without that - as the large majority of all new online <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> spend continues to go to the search and social media platforms - quality content will no longer be a choice or an option," he continued. "And that would be the worst outcome for all."</p><p>As publishers come to terms with a new reality on Facebook, the company meanwhile, is attempting to pacify its publisher partners and assuage their concerns. Digiday <a href="https://digiday.com/media/change-will-take-time-figure-heres-facebook-explaining-feed-change-publishers/">published an email Friday</a> that Campbell Brown, its head of news partnerships, has sent to "a couple of dozen" partners.&#xa0;</p><p>People are likely to see less content that comes directly from publishers, brands, and celebrities in their news feed, Brown wrote in the email. While that is likely to be disruptive, Brown suggested that publishers could weather the change by prioritizing&#xa0;content that "encourages community connection."</p><p>"Some pages may see their reach, video watch time, and referral traffic decrease as the updates roll out over the next couple of months," he wrote. "Content from pages that drives interactions between friends will perform better than page content that drives only passive consumption without any person-to-person engagement."</p><p>Ultimately, Brown emphasized that news remained a top priority for Facebook, and that it was going to continue to work with publishers.</p><p>"We know even a small update to News Feed can be disruptive to your business, and this change will take some time to figure out," he wrote. 'Media is collateral damage' - publishers react to Facebook's sweeping news feed changes

No rewards. No purchase protection. None of the benefits that I receive on any of my purchases!</p><p>Recently this happened, and it led to a pretty deep conversation over all of the cards I carry in my wallet. It might seem ridiculous, but to me, leaving points on the table is leaving <em>money</em> on the table.</p><p>Admittedly, I carry more cards than most people. I carry a <em>lot</em> of cards, and three of them with eye-popping annual fees.</p><p>However, this is for a very deliberate reason: I optimize my spend for bonus categories so I can earn the maximum possible points for every purchase. I travel about six months out of the year, so I actually use all of the benefits of these cards. The value I'm receiving is far greater than the annual fees paid in my case.</p><p>Should everyone do this? Obviously not, but anyone who can use credit cards responsibly and settle their balances on time shouldn't be paying for purchases with a debit card that doesn't pay any rewards. That's just leaving money on the table.</p><p>Here are the cards I always keep in my wallet to use every day:</p><h3>Citi Prestige</h3><p>I buy a lot of airfare, and I eat in a lot of restaurants. The Citi Prestige earns an unbeatable 5x ThankYou Points on this spend. These transfer instantly to some of my favorite award programs, including Avianca LifeMiles. This card does have a steep annual fee: $495, of which $250 is rebated.</p><p>And one of its best benefits, 4th Night Free, is now limited to twice per year - <em>and</em> you have to book it directly through Citi, rather than through the hotel (so you miss out on hotel loyalty program benefits). Still, the 5x bonus categories are - for me - unbeatable, and the value I get from this is well worth the annual fee.</p><h3><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-sapphire-reserve/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Sapphire Reserve</a></h3><p>Chase charges a hefty <strong>$450 annual fee</strong> for this card, but your first $300 of travel purchases are refunded as statement credits. For an effective $150 annual fee, I get a second Priority Pass, which is handy when I'm traveling with people who pay for things with debit cards. I also get 3x Ultimate Rewards points on non-airfare travel.</p><p>I use my Citi Prestige for airfare (some people recommend using the <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-sapphire-reserve/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Sapphire Reserve</a> instead for trip interruption coverage Citi doesn't have, but Chase makes this coverage hard to claim and won't pay to re-route you on an alternate flight).</p><p>However, I use my <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-sapphire-reserve/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Sapphire Reserve</a> for all other travel purchases. Chase has an expansive definition of "travel" including bus fare and passes, road tolls, and even parking meters. Excluding the $300 travel credit, I earn 3x points all of these purchases worldwide!</p><p>The Ultimate Rewards points I earn can be transferred to seven different award programs (including all three flavors of Avios) or redeemed for 1.5 cents per point on the Chase travel portal.</p><h3><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-freedom/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Freedom</a></h3><p>This card pairs perfectly with my <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-sapphire-reserve/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Sapphire Reserve</a>. There is no annual fee, and by optimizing my spend for bonus categories, I earn a ton of points. The <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-freedom/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Freedom</a> card earns Ultimate Rewards points, and Chase allows transferring these points between cards meaning I can get a minimum 1.5 cents per point in value when spending the points on travel (you can also get a cash rebate at 1 cent per point).</p><p>Given that Chase has rotating quarterly bonus categories that return 5% on spend at specified merchants (up to $1,500 each quarter you activate), you can earn an eye-popping minimum 7.5% return with this card. This quarter, the bonus categories are grocery stores and home improvement stores.</p><p>One of my best friends just bought a house, and it's her birthday next week. You can probably guess what her gift will be, and what card I'm paying with.</p><h3>Discover it® Cash Back</h3><p>This no-annual-fee card is almost exactly like the <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-freedom/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Freedom</a>, except that instead of earning points, it earns cash back. There are quarterly rotating 5% bonus categories (currently gas stations, Uber and Lyft; <span>up to $1,500 each quarter after activation</span>) which are usually different than the <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-freedom/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Freedom</a> categories.</p><p>While this card isn't as attractive to use for other spending (which only returns 1%), the rebate is hard to beat for bonused spend.</p><h3>Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature Card</h3><p>This card is about as simple as it gets: You get 2% back on all purchases in cold hard cash, with no annual fee. For what would otherwise be non-bonused spend on my other cards, I use the Fidelity Rewards card.</p><p>What makes this deal even sweeter? There is currently a $100 bonus when you sign up.</p><p>I can't carry every card with me, though - here are the cards I keep in my sock drawer, to use regularly but not every single day:</p><h3><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/ihg-rewards-club-premier-credit-card/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card</a></h3><p>The <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/ihg-rewards-club-premier-credit-card/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">IHG Premier card</a> has a sign-up bonus of 80,000 bonus points after $2,000 spend in the first three months. With only 1 point per dollar spent, this isn't a card to use beyond the minimum spend for a signup bonus. However, it's worth keeping for the automatic Platinum Elite status you'll receive. You also get your fourth award night free, and one free night per year at an IHG hotel listed at the 40,000 point level or below - solid value for the $89 annual fee.</p><h3><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/the-world-of-hyatt-credit-card/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">The World Of Hyatt Credit Card</a></h3><p>For a $95 annual fee, this card provides a welcome bonus of up to 50,000 bonus points after a steep $6,000 minimum spend in the first six months. While Hyatt points are more valuable than other hotel programs, this card probably isn't worth using for non-bonused spend.</p><p>However, the card is worth using for bonused spend because $15,000 in spend allows a free night in a Category 1-4 hotel annually, and every $5,000 in spend gets you two World Of Hyatt tier qualifying night credits. You'll receive an additional free night annually when you renew the card. This card automatically confers Discoverist status in the World Of Hyatt program.</p><h3><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/marriott-bonvoy-brilliant-american-express-card/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Bonvoy Brilliant AmEx</a></h3><p>This card has a steep $450 annual fee. However, $300 of it is returned as a statement credit when booking Marriott properties, so for me, it's really only $150.</p><p>What do I get for the (effective) $150? A welcome bonus of 75,000 points after spending $3,000 in the first three months, a $100 discount on every two-night-or-greater St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton booking I make, 15 elite night credits, an annual free night award at up the 50,000 point level, and Gold Elite status.</p><p>The <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/marriott-bonvoy-brilliant-american-express-card/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Bonvoy Brilliant</a> still comes with a free Boingo Wireless subscription, a benefit that has been dropped from the <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/the-platinum-card-from-american-express/?utm_campaign=bi_050219_cl-wallet-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Platinum Card® from American Express</a>. I use this card to buy anything I might want to return, because it still has Amex Return Protection (a benefit being cut from an increasingly large number of cards). The reality, though, is that each card serves a different purpose, whether it comes with travel perks or free insurance products or it helps us <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maximize-credit-card-rewards-2019-4">earn valuable travel rewards points</a> we use to see the world.</p><p>That's why I use different cards at different times - for example, I might use one card to pay for airfare and an entirely different one to pay for dining out or Amazon purchases. It's all about the rewards - or at least the benefits I can get in return. And why not utilize different credit cards that give you more for certain types of purchases?</p><p>Since my family spends at least $600 per month on food at the grocery store, this is one of our biggest spending categories. So, of course, I'm careful about which credit card I use for grocery purchases each month.</p><p>Here are the main two cards I use at the supermarket, month after month:</p><h2><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/blue-cash-preferred-card-from-american-express/?utm_campaign=bi_052319_hj_grocery-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express</a></h2><p>While the <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/blue-cash-preferred-card-from-american-express/?utm_campaign=bi_052319_hj_grocery-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express</a> charges a $95 annual fee that is <em>not waived</em> the first year, I happily pay this fee and renew it every 12 months. This card is an absolute game changer for families because it lets you earn 6% back on up to $6,000 in spending at US supermarkets each year, then 1%.</p><p>And that's in addition to the 3% you get back at US gas stations and the 1% return you receive on all other purchases. You also get <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amex-blue-cash-preferred-cash-back-credit-card-refresh-2019-5">6% back on select US streaming subscriptions</a> and 3% back on all transit.</p><p>The <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/blue-cash-preferred-card-from-american-express/?utm_campaign=bi_052319_hj_grocery-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Blue Cash Preferred</a> also comes with a $250 statement credit after you spend $1,000 within the first three months of account opening, although I earned this bonus long ago. Each year though, maxing out the supermarket category by spending at least $500 per month nets me at least $360 in cash back - much more than I would earn with a regular cash-back credit card.</p><h2><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-freedom/?utm_campaign=bi_052319_hj_grocery-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Freedom</a></h2><p>Another card I use for groceries is the <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-freedom/?utm_campaign=bi_052319_hj_grocery-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Freedom</a>, but I only use it when grocery spending is one of its bonus categories. Fortunately, that time is right now. For April, May, and June of this year, you get 5% back on up to $1,500 spent each quarter you activate in categories that rotate each quarter, which just so happen to include grocery stores and home improvement stores.</p><p>The <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-freedom/?utm_campaign=bi_052319_hj_grocery-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Freedom</a> offers a $150 signup bonus after you spend $500 within three months of account opening. Even better, the points you earn belong in the Chase Ultimate Rewards program, meaning you can cash them in for gift cards, merchandise, statement credits, or travel. If you have a premier travel credit card like the <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-sapphire-preferred-card/?utm_campaign=bi_052319_hj_grocery-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Sapphire Preferred Card</a> or <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-sapphire-reserve/?utm_campaign=bi_052319_hj_grocery-cards&amp;utm_source=referral">Chase Sapphire Reserve</a>, you can pool your points in that account for superior travel redemptions and 1:1 transfers to airline and hotel partners.</p><p>If your goal is earning money back at grocery stores, either of the cards I use can work well.
