According to a recent CNBC report, CAIT predicts that this year, an estimated 48 lakh weddings are expected to take place in November and December, potentially generating a whopping ₹6 lakh crore in business. This surge reflects not just the volume of weddings but the wide-scale economic impact that accompanies such celebrations. Weddings in India are known for their grandeur, with celebrations often spanning several days and involving a number of services, from event planning and catering to jewellery purchases and attire. CAIT’s recent prediction, thus, underscores the vital role that the wedding season plays in the retail market. In this year’s cycle, the retail sector alone is poised to see a turnover of ₹5.9 lakh crore, highlighting the deep interconnectedness between cultural traditions and economic activity. In Delhi, which stands as one of the top locations for extravagant weddings, the expected impact is particularly significant. Approximately 4.5 lakh weddings are projected in the capital city, potentially contributing around ₹1.5 lakh crore to the local economy. This surge benefits a variety of sectors, including hospitality, fashion, gold and jewellery, and even technology, as digital services and e-invitations become more prevalent. The build-up to this wedding season has already shown signs of economic revival, particularly in sectors like gold and jewellery. Suvankar Sen, MD &amp; CEO of Senco Gold, noted a marked increase in wedding-related purchases during the recent Dhanteras festival. Speaking in an interview with CNBC TV-18, Sen highlighted that the August duty cut on gold played a significant role in spurring early buying behaviour. He pointed out that this policy move helped lower the cost of gold, enticing consumers to make significant purchases ahead of the peak wedding months. "We can see at least 40-50% of the consumers who are buying right now are related to weddings, and the 40-50% who are not related to weddings, are divided amongst consumers with a budget of ₹2-3 lakh buying some kind of jewellery as an annual buying during this auspicious time. Some consumers are buying working women's jewellery or lightweight for their daughters, something within ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh kind of buying happening. ₹20,000-30,000 is a budget consumer at all levels, some kind of a pendant, ring or earring that everyone would like to buy during this auspicious time. So, this is how we are seeing the consumer," he added. This early momentum has translated into packed showrooms and increased consumer spending, signalling a robust start to wedding-related commerce. Retailers across India are now preparing for a flurry of activity, restocking inventory and expanding service offerings to meet the anticipated demand. From wedding attire and décor to luxury items like high-end electronics and custom-made invitations, the shopping lists are extensive, promising a lucrative time for businesses. Now, comes the question of gold as an investment. In spite of gold gaining ground as a safe haven asset in times of volatility and a new war, global gold demand in Q3 2023 dropped by six percent, on reduced interest in gold bars and coins, as well as diminished demand from central banks. As Diwali approaches, the price of gold is on the rise thanks to geopolitical tensions and the US Federal Reserve decision to hold on to high-interest rates. With the various offers jewellers are providing it might be a good time to do that. But this will not serve the purpose of an investment. For those looking at an investment, there are better options than bangles, earrings or necklaces. “If you are buying for consumption then obviously physical gold has no other alternative but if your purpose is pure investment then the best is sovereign gold bond (SGB),” says Anant Ladha, founder, Invest Aaj For Kal, a financial advisory firm. There are three major advantages of SGBs. First, there is no making charges or risk of purity. Further one may get 2.5% additional interest over and above per annum. Though the interest is entirely taxable at current tax slabs, any capital gains earned at the end of eight years is entirely tax free. Investing in gold through digital gold platforms, gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), and gold mutual funds also offer flexible options to invest in gold. Digital gold allows for easy, small-scale investments, while Gold ETFs provide the convenience of stock market trading. Gold MFs, on the other hand, offer professional management of your gold investments. But then again, will it give the same satisfaction of it hanging on your neck as it will in the portfolio? That’s a call that consumers will have to take.

Jewellers woo consumers this Dhanteras but experts advise caution

Mumbai, May 10 () With retailers starting to open their shops in green zones, the gems and jewellery industry is slowly inching back towards normalcy, but is witnessing just 20-25 per cent sales. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has allowed shops to open during the lockdown, which has been extended till May 18, for essential commodities and standalone business establishments of non-essential goods. All India Gems and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJF) Chairman Anantha Padmanabhan told that jewellers have opened shops in few states after taking permission from local authorities in the last one week. "These retailers are doing 20-25 per cent business as people are coming to buy wedding related jewellery as gold prices are going up and also those who had bought gold online during Akshaya Tritiya are also coming to redeem their purchases," he added. Gold prices in India are currently ruling at Rs 45,000 per 10 grams, he said. The jewellers' body is keeping an eye on how COVID-19 situation pans out till May 18 and what decisions are taken by the government, he added. In Tamil Nadu, Padmanabhan said jewellers have approached authorities to allow them to open shops. "We have sent representations to the authorities to allow us to open shops. We will take all precautionary measures under the government guidelines to curb the pandemic," he added. Meanwhile, Kalyan Jewellers has opened 10 stores in the last week, one each in Odisha, Assam, Puducherry and seven in Karnataka after getting clearance from state governments. "We have opened 10 stores in India since last one week and are taking all safety measures for curbing COVID-19 pandemic, including social distancing, store and hand sanitization among others. "These stores are opened after discussions with the local governments. Currently, we are witnessing wedding related purchases," Kalyan Jewellers Executive Director Ramesh Kalyanaraman said. He said the company has enough inventory to cater to its customers and is constantly in touch with local governments and taking stock of the situation. "We are inventory ready and will open the rest of our stores once the local government gives the go ahead. Once all our stores are open, we expect business to come back to normal momentum within a month," he said. The company, which has 34 stores in the Middle East, has opened 13 of them in the UAE and Qatar, he added. Senco Gold and Diamonds has also announced reopening of its stores across green and orange zones in four states -- West Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Karnataka. Headquartered in Kolkata, the company plans to start operations across all locations in a phased manner following clearance by the concerned government authorities. "We have started operating at selected stores in four states after getting approvals from local government authorities. To ensure safe hygienic shopping experience for our customers and for the well-being of our employees, we will be following all suggested safety measures," Senco Gold and Diamonds Executive Director Suvankar Sen said. "We are ensuring contact-less shopping experience by using new age technology and emphasizing on digital payments," he added. The company is also promoting its e-commerce platform for shopping and is suggesting customers to do first round of selection with the help of e-catalog, prior to visiting the store. Meanwhile, Tanishq, a jewellery brand from Tata Group, on Saturday announced plans to reopen its 328 stores across the country in a phased manner by opening first 50 stores by Sunday. It would continue to comply with all rules related to COVID-19 lockdown, while reopening and running operations, the company said a statement. "We are reopening our stores in a phased manner because each store has to pass an eligibility test prior to re-commencing operations. This is to ensure each store is 100 per cent prepared to manage the store, staff and customers," CEO of jewellery division at Titan Company Ajoy Chawla said. SM RVK
