The collaboration with Indian industry aids in the growth of the domestic manufacturing ecosystem." The first phase of developmental field firing trials of Indian <keyword id="22313476" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="light-tank" source="keywords">light tank</keyword> 'Zorawar' was conducted by DRDO on Friday. "<keyword id="19896088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence-Research-and-Development-Organisation" source="keywords">Defence Research and Development Organisation</keyword> (DRDO), on September 13, 2024, successfully conducted the preliminary <keyword id="23166474" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="automotive-trials" source="keywords">automotive trials</keyword> of the Indian <keyword id="22313476" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="light-tank" source="keywords">light Tank</keyword>, Zorawar, a highly versatile platform capable of deployment in high-altitude areas," as per a press release from the Ministry of Defence. During the field trials conducted in the desert terrain, the Light Tank demonstrated exceptional performance, efficiently meeting all the intended objectives. In the initial phase, the tank's firing performance was rigorously evaluated and it achieved the required accuracy on designated targets, the Defence Ministry stated. Zorawar has been successfully developed by the Combat Vehicles Research &amp; Development Establishment (CVRDE), a unit of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with <keyword id="19975888" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Larsen-Toubro" source="keywords">Larsen &amp; Toubro</keyword> Ltd (L&amp;T). "Numerous Indian industries, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), contributed to the development of various sub-systems, showcasing the strength of indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities within the country," Ministry of Defence stated in the release. Union <keyword id="19953821" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence-Minister" source="keywords">Defence Minister</keyword> <keyword id="19911645" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajnath-singh" source="keywords">Rajnath Singh</keyword> lauded DRDO, the Indian Army, and all associated industry partners for the successful trials of the Indian Light Tank. He described the achievement as a significant milestone towards India's goal of self-reliance in critical defence systems and technologies, as per the Ministry of Defence. Learning from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, DRDO and L&amp;T have integrated USV and loitering munition in the Zoravar tank. Initially, 59 tanks will be given to the army. Weighing 25 tonnes, this tank can move at high speed in mountain valleys and two tanks can be transported at a time by the Indian Air Force's C-17 aircraft.

New Delhi, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="Orion">India</keyword> on Thursday accorded an initial approval to defence acquisition projects worth Rs 2.23 lakh crore that included procurement of 97 <keyword id="6376012" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tejas" source="Orion">Tejas</keyword> light combat aircraft and 156 Prachand combat helicopters, in a major move to significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the armed forces. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, cleared the projects, at a time India is locked in a bitter military standoff with China at a number of friction points in eastern Ladakh for over three years. The defence ministry said 98 per cent of the total procurement worth Rs 2.23 lakh crore will be sourced from the domestic industries and that the move will give a substantial boost to the Indian defence industry in achieving the goal of 'Aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defence industry. The DAC also approved a proposal of the Indian Air Force to upgrade its Su-30 fighter fleet by state-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (<keyword id="68124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HAL" source="Orion">HAL</keyword>). The DAC further accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) or initial approval for procurement of two types of anti-tank munitions namely area denial munition (ADM) type-2 and type-3. The top body on procurement of military hardware also cleared acquisition and integration of automatic target tracker (ATT) and digital basaltic computer (DBC) for T-90 tanks besides approving another proposal to buy medium range anti-ship missiles (MRAShM) for the Indian Navy. The MRAShM is a lightweight surface-to-surface missile which will be a primary offensive weapon onboard various Indian naval ships. "The DAC accorded AoNs for procurement of Light Combat Helicopter for Indian Air Force and Indian Army and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-1A for IAF from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category," the ministry said. Though it did not mention the specific numbers, official sources said 97 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (Mark 1A) are being procured for the IAF and 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) are being procured for the Army and the Air Force. In February 2021, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd for procurement of 83 Tejas MK-1A jets for the IAF. With the additional fleet, the number of indigenously-developed Tejas aircraft being procured by the IAF would go up to 180. "The AoNs have also been accorded by the DAC for upgradation of Su-30 MKI aircraft indigenously from HAL. "While procurement of these equipment will provide enormous strength to the IAF, acquisition from domestic defence industries will take the indigenous capability to a new height," the ministry said in a statement. "It will also reduce dependability on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) substantially," it added.

The <keyword id="32723" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="defence" source="Orion">defence</keyword> ministry has approved a fresh list of 928 components and subsystems which will only be procured from the domestic industry after a ban on their import kicks in under a staggered time-line of around five-and-half years. The ministry on Sunday said the aim of the move is in sync with the government's overall aim to promote 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defence production. It is the fourth such "positive indigenisation list (PIL)" comprising line replacement units, sub-systems and components used for various military platforms, equipment and weapons. "To promote 'Aatmanirbharta' in defence and minimise imports by defence public sector undertakings, the <keyword id="6369097" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-defence" source="Orion">Ministry of Defence</keyword> has approved fourth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 strategically-important line replacement units/sub-systems/spares and components, including high-end materials and spares, with import substitution value worth Rs 715 crore," the ministry said in a statement. The aim of the indigenisation list is also to minimise imports by the defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs). The defence ministry has set specific timelines for import ban of the items, spanning the period from December 2023 to December 2028. This list is in continuation to the three similar PILs that were brought out in December 2021, March 2022 and August 2022 "These lists contain 2,500 items which are already indigenised and 1,238 (351+107+780) items which will be indigenised within the given timelines," the ministry said. Of the 1,238, 310 items have been indigenised so far, it said. The items which were already indigenised comprised 262 from the first PIL, 11 from the second list and 37 from the third PIL, according to the ministry. "The DPSUs will undertake indigenisation of these items through different routes under 'Make' category and in-house development through the capabilities of MSMEs and private Indian industry, thereby providing impetus to the growth in economy, enhanced investment in defence and reduction in import dependence of DPSUs," the ministry said. "In addition, this will augment the design capabilities of the domestic defence industry by involving academia and research institutions," it said. In a tweet, Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajnath-singh" source="Orion">Rajnath Singh</keyword> said the Narendra Modi government is committed towards indigenisation and ensuring self reliance in the defence sector. "Keeping this in mind, the 4th Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 strategically-important Line Replacement Units (LRUs)/Sub-systems/Spares and Components has been approved," he said. "The list includes high-end materials and spares, with import substitution value worth Rs 715 crore," Singh added. The ministry said DPSUs will soon initiate procurement action for these notified items. In the last few years, the government has taken a series of measures to promote domestic defence production. <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> is one of the largest importers of arms globally. According to estimates, the Indian armed forces are projected to spend around USD 130 billion in capital procurement over the next five years. The government now wants to reduce dependence on imported military platforms and has decided to support domestic defence manufacturing. The defence ministry has set a goal of a turnover of USD 25 billion (Rs 1.75 lakh crore) in defence manufacturing in the next five years which includes an export target of USD 5 billion worth of military hardware. Govt approves 4th 'positive indigenisation list' of sub-systems to promote domestic defence industry

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has slammed defence public sector units (PSUs) for performing poorly because of which the objective of self-reliance could not be met. The reason, <keyword id="6356851" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="CAG">CAG</keyword> said, was that a majority of contracts that were entrusted to these PSUs were delayed, which adversely affected Indian Army’s plans for capability enhancement. 
 
The report from CAG repeats what the private sector feels about getting more orders from the government, since a majority of contracts in the last two years have gone to PSUs. As per the report, 63% of the contracts given to PSUs from 2007 to 2012 were delayed for various reasons. 
 "Besides impacting defence preparedness, the delay had financial implications towards loss of interest on payments made to <keyword id="3516494" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="DPSUs">DPSUs</keyword>. The objective of self-reliance in defence production had also not been achieved," said the CAG report which was presented in the parliament yesterday.

The<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Anil-Ambani-reliance-defence/articleshow/52500626.cms"> private sector</a> in defence manufacturing has already complained to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) that the defence ministry is favouring PSUs despite their delays, because of which they don’t received orders as per their capabilities. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/CAG-No-record-available-for-Rs-44000-cr-spending-by-ministries/articleshow/48237252.cms">CAG </a>report was prepared after a thorough study of at least nine<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Indias-defence-manufacturing-deals-will-take-place-under-these-5-categories/articleshow/52432285.cms"> major army projects</a> and assessing all contracts placed on PSUs. As per the report, the "inordinate delay in supply of critical weapons and equipment" had "hampered the modernisation and capability enhancement plan of Indian Army". 
 
The delays also led to the government facing a loss of Rs 1,931 crore because of accrued interest on advances that were paid to these DPSUs.
