<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nikhil Teja Kolli's startup MokSa.ai uses AI-enabled security cameras to curb theft and fraud.</li><li>Since its launch a year ago, MokSa.ai has garnered over 70 customers and $240,000 in ARR.</li></ul>When he was a college student in Kansas, Nikhil Teja Kolli worked a night shift at a convenience store on the edge of the Ozarks. One night, a man lingered inside the store until the other customers cleared out, then approached the counter with a gun stretched in Kolli's direction. The gunman swiped the cash in the drawer and left Kolli frozen. He felt helpless to stop it.Eight months later, he would be held at gunpoint again.He couldn't have known it then, but Kolli would go on to start a business focused on mitigating theft.His startup MokSa.ai, which aims to help <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retailers-using-tech-to-combat-theft-at-self-checkouts-2023-11">businesses curb theft</a> and employee fraud using artificial intelligence-enabled security cameras, launched from stealth less than a year ago. But it already has a raft of paying customers, which is rare among startups of its size. According to Kolli, its real-time monitoring system is in use at over 70 gas stations, liquor stores, and bodegas nationwide and is generating $20,000 a month in recurring revenue.Now, this potent cocktail of machine learning and profits has persuaded investors to provide it with pre-seed funding. MokSa.ai tells Business Insider it closed $1.5 million in a March round led by Array Ventures, with participation from Jay Farner, the former chief executive of Quicken Loans, and The Fund Midwest.The company uses computer vision to automate away some parts of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmarts-anti-theft-technology-is-effective-but-involves-confronting-customers-2023-10">surveillance</a> still done by humans. It makes software for off-the-shelf security cameras that detect suspicious activity — think, a person stuffs a six-pack of beer in their pants or a cashier gives away merchandise to a friend — and sends a real-time notification to the customer dashboard. The alert includes a clip of the incident, which saves the business owner time they might spend playing back hours of camera footage.<div type="image" title="MokSa.ai uses general-use models and customizes them to detect suspicious activity at store locations." height="1123" width="794" msid="109508830" hostid="261" sizebytes="64550"></div>Kolli said the company initially tried to use open-source, pre-trained artificial intelligence models but found that some of these models showed biases representative of the datasets they were trained on. It then tried fine-tuning those models, but Kolli said their performance fell apart. Eventually, it landed on using general-use models that continuously learn as new footage comes in.The company also pays college interns in India to watch footage for suspicious activity and annotate it — a process called data labeling."As we sit and speak, there is new data coming in and these models are getting better," Kolli said.According to Shruti Gandhi, the founder and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solo-general-partners-raising-outside-capital-2020-1">sole general partner</a> at Array Ventures, part of MokSa.ai's magic is its customized models for this use case."The data sets they have gathered in the last two years of being a services company allowed them to deploy trained models in customers from their first week of onboarding," she said. "That is not possible today with a lot of business intelligence companies because most think they're going to get better once they have customer data. So the reason some companies will win over others in the same category is their access to unique, differentiated data."Given that MokSa.ai's software works with a range of internet-connected security cameras, it's positioned itself as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epic-games-google-fortnite-ruling-play-store-apple-lawsuit-trial-2023-12">Android</a> of the surveillance market. The company will also provide a business with the cameras it needs in exchange for signing a multiyear contract. It charges a monthly subscription that scales based on the number of cameras in use.Customers can pay extra to have an operator call them when the system detects an event, and that's as far as MokSa.ai's responsibility goes, Kolli said. It won't contact the police."We are offering surveillance audit platform," he said. "So it's up to the customer to understand what they want to do with that information we provide."<div type="image" title="The dashboard shows reports of suspicious activity at a glance." height="833" width="1428" msid="109508831" hostid="261" sizebytes="60338"></div><h2>The Android of the surveillance market</h2>Before MokSa.ai, Kolli worked as a quality manager at a company producing parts for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-high-speed-rail-projects-acela-brightline-upcoming-future-2023-6">high-speed rails</a>. He got the itch to build this company after speaking to a friend who owned the gas station and liquor store where he worked in college. The friend had found out an employee had stolen thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and cash and he asked Kolli how technology might be able to catch bad actors. The idea planted the seed for what would become MokSa.ai.Later, Kolli enrolled in the startup accelerator <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-techstars-is-looking-for-in-startup-applications-during-downturn-2023-5">Techstars</a> Detroit, where one of his mentors introduced him to his future investor.Kolli told Gandhi the MokSa.ai story over the phone. He didn't have a pitch deck to show her or any other investor pledges to move her to act. But, the Array Ventures founder bought into the round before the call ended. The next day, Kolli had a term sheet.The investment was a "no-brainer," Gandhi said.The company is now gearing up for growth. MokSa.ai just signed a contract with Royal Ozarks, a large commercial real-estate developer in the South, to deploy its system across 150 store locations. Kolli said the partnership will bring its $240,000 annual recurring revenue to over $1 million this year.The new funding will allow the company to grow its sales and customer support teams as part of this expansion. It's also working to release a mobile app that will allow business owners to view their notifications on the go.In its bid to create a smarter surveillance system, MokSa.ai faces competition from startups like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/security-company-says-3-3-3-perk-good-for-business-2024-2">Verkada, a maker of building security tools</a> that's raised over $360 million in funding, and Rhombus, a newer entrant that just announced $26 million in capital. While these two tout their abilities to detect suspicious activity and send alerts, they both require customers to use their cameras and sensors.That could be the wedge that gives MokSa.ai a chance despite being much younger than its competitors.Gandhi summed it up, "What they're saying is keep your camera, we will figure out the best way to use this camera."

Nearly 88 per cent of the investments made by Alternative Investment Funds (<keyword id="1006423" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aifs" source="Orion">AIFs</keyword>) under the Startups <keyword id="3483659" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ffs" source="Orion">FFS</keyword> (Fund for Funds) Scheme have gone to five states. <keyword id="6354780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="karnataka" source="Orion">Karnataka</keyword> has topped the list of states with an investment of Rs 4,687 crore out of the total investment of Rs 14,077 crore spread across the country. The Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) Scheme was approved and established in 2016 with a corpus of Rs 10,000 crore, with contribution spread over the 14th and 15th Finance Commission cycle based on progress of implementation, to provide a much-needed boost to the Indian startup ecosystem and enable access to domestic capital. As on December 31, 2022, under FFS, Rs 7,980 crore has been committed to 99 AIFs and Rs 3,400 crore has been disbursed to 72 AIFs which have in turn made investments of Rs 14,077 crore in 791 startups. The government data said that while Karnataka got an investment of Rs 4687 crore for 240 startups under the scheme, Maharashtra's 176 startups received an investment of Rs 3,426 crore and Delhi's 138 startups got Rs 2,254 crore. Similarly, in Haryana 60 startups received an investment of Rs 1,148 crore and in <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, 29 startups got an investment of Rs 826 crore. Under FFS, the Scheme does not directly invest in startups, instead it provides capital to SEBI-registered Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), known as daughter funds, who in turn invest money in growing Indian startups through equity and equity-linked instruments. The <keyword id="104385" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="small-industries-development-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Small Industries Development Bank of India</keyword> (SIDBI) has been given the mandate of operating this Fund through selection of suitable daughter funds and overseeing the disbursal of committed capital. AIFs supported under FFS are required to invest at least two times of the amount committed under FFS in startups. The Government with an intent to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation, startups and encouraging private investments in the startup ecosystem of the country launched Startup India initiative on January 16, 2016. The flagship Schemes including Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), <keyword id="9949511" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="startup-india-seed-fund-scheme" source="Orion">Startup India Seed Fund Scheme</keyword> (SISFS) and Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS) support startups at various stages of their business cycle to enable startups to graduate to a level where they are able to raise investments from angel investors or venture capitalists or seek loans from commercial banks or financial institutions. Officials said that over 50 regulatory reforms have been undertaken by the Government since 2016 to enhance ease of doing business, ease of raising capital and reduce compliance burden for the startup ecosystem. Besides, to enable ease of procurement, Central Ministries and Departments have been directed to relax conditions of prior turnover and prior experience in public procurement for all DPIIT recognised startups subject to meeting quality and technical specifications. Further, Government e-Marketplace (GeM) Startup Runway has been developed which is a dedicated corner for startups to sell products and services directly to the Government. The Government also implements flagship annual exercises and programs including States' Startup Ranking, National Startup Awards and Innovation Week which play an important role in holistic development of the startup ecosystem. The Government also facilitates participation and engagement of the Indian startup ecosystem at international platforms. It was founded to introduce Burmese cuisine, offering Myanmar’s authentic taste and cuisine and providing a window into its culture. “I’ve grown up eating the Burmese dishes we serve at Burma Burma, as my mother learnt these recipes while growing up in Burma before the migration in the 1960s,” said Ankit Gupta, cofounder, Burma Burma. The restaurant was started in 2014 by the duo in Mumbai. The duo has opened seven outlets across Mumbai, Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Bangalore, and Kolkata in the last nine years. With this funding, the company plans on opening eight new outlets in the next fifteen months, taking the total to fourteen outlets. “Nine years in this business, we’ve thoroughly tested all four zones of the Indian market for Burmese cuisine across six cities in India. With this round, we’re committed to entering new cities and expanding our base in existing ones,” said Chirag Chhajer, cofounder, Burma Burma. “With our 450+ member strong team, our next target is to take Burma Burma beyond India; we’re now ready more than ever,” Chhajer added. Burma Burma, a Burmese restaurant chain, raises over $2 million in seed funding

It has been edited for length and clarity.When my husband Paul and I first started playing with mixing sparkling water, fresh herbs, and fruit in our kitchen in early 2019, we never imagined that it would turn into a full-time business with a backer from "Shark Tank."Our love of soda as adults came from having crunchy moms as kids who wouldn't let us drink fizzy drinks. But we didn't enjoy many of the sparkling water flavors available, so we started to make our own at home. As soon as we muddled crushed fresh basil and frozen strawberries with carbonated water, we knew we'd hit something interesting. We created four more flavor combinations by mixing fresh cactus with rose petals, lemongrass with coconut, and lavender with fresh cucumber. Not every combination made the cut — frankincense and birch being one. <h2>When we tested different combinations on our friends they'd say, 'You should sell this'</h2>In October 2019, inspired by our friends' enthusiasm, we used our savings to make 1,000 cans of five different flavors. We were living in Denver at the time and took the cans to a trade show in Boulder. The cost of the cans was small enough to put on a personal credit card, but large enough to be stressful if we didn't do well at the show. Luckily, not only did the customers love them, but we attracted the interest of a buyer for Whole Foods, who became our client a year later. We also got interest from our first store, a local organic food store, that took our remaining cans. <h2>We immediately started zipping our credit cards and raising money from family and friends to make more cans</h2><div type="image" title="Maddie Voge Aura Bora" height="4476" width="5968" msid="91381582" hostid="261"></div>Every day was a learning curve. We didn't know how to make legal nutrition labels, where to get barcodes from, or why grocery stores charged us to be on their shelves. Luckily, other startup owners we met were very generous at answering any of our questions. In summer 2019, Paul decided to take the leap and leave his job at a venture capital firm. However, I'd just gotten a new marketing job at a tech firm in San Francisco, so we moved to the Bay Area. Paul worked full-time for Aura Bora, while I worked for the brand in the evening and on weekends. Instead of taking our cans to trade shows in Colorado, we began throwing samples in the trunk of our Subaru and knocking on doors of health food stores in San Francisco. Then a few months later, the pandemic hit and everything changed.<h2>When the pandemic began, people stopped shopping for impulse buys or to try new things</h2>Most shoppers were getting the essentials and going home. Due to supply chain issues, aluminium was difficult to get at one point, so we also had concerns about whether we'd be able to have enough cans from the factories who worked with us to fill our inventory. Deliveries were also hit as the trucking companies needed to give up their space to emergency items. Despite these challenges, we still managed to fulfil our orders and our deliveries always got to their destination, even if they were slightly delayed. But being a new brand actually helped us, particularly when the pandemic created a rise in costs for everything from ingredients to shipping. While more solidified brands may have struggled with the rise in costs, we were still young and flexible enough to factor these changes into our business plan and expenses. <h2>There were also fun surprises during the pandemic, such as when we were invited to film an episode for 'Shark Tank' in summer 2020</h2>After we received an email from the TV show's producer asking if we wanted to take part, Paul and I immediately went into overdrive. We watched more than 100 episodes of the show to help prepare for our pitch. When we went on, we got <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjRoFuZ0MkE">amazing reactions</a>. Robert Herjavec loved our pitch the most and invested $200,000 in our business.When the program aired in January 2021, we did more in revenue on our website on that day alone than we'd done previously in the entire history of our site. It was a huge moment for us. Since then, the company has continued to grow. We now manufacture with three factories in the United States and are sold at 2,500 stores across the country. Besides Paul and me, we also now have three employees: a head of commerce, a head of social, and a graphic designer. We've also started creating limited edition flavor drops that are available exclusively on our website.<h2>But as the business has grown we've still been thrown a few curve balls</h2><div type="image" title="Aura Bora" height="3709" width="4946" msid="91381587" hostid="261"></div>In February 2021, cold weather caused a deep freeze across several regions where we ship Aura Bora waters, which made our cans explode in the back of delivery trucks due to the dramatic drops in temperature. Some customers in Texas said the cans delivered on their doorstep were so cold they'd turned into slushies. Waking up to an inbox flooded with emails from folks who love our brand saying that their cans had exploded was definitely our most challenging day so far. We immediately started replacing the cans and made a <keyword id="11893563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="strategy" source="Orion">strategy</keyword> to hold future orders if the temperature were to drop again. Now if we see the weather is changing, we hold onto the shipments and tell customers that they'll arrive the next week once the temperature rises a little.<h2>In 2021, we raised $2 million in seed funding</h2><a href="https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/438471-37#timeline">This funding</a> helped us restock inventory for our contracts with retailers including Whole Foods, Sprouts Farmers Market, and Fresh Thyme. I left my tech job and joined the team full-time in February 2022. I did hesitate about leaving my job — I wondered what it was going to be like working full time with my husband and I questioned if I had learned enough to do it well. But at the end of the day, I felt I'd learned a lot during my time with the tech company. Paul and I felt ready to work together as a team, and I wanted to play a bigger role in growing the brand I'd helped create.While we have had tough days, I couldn't be happier. Every time that we release a new flavor and I choose the creature to illustrate for the can and write the decorative haiku, I feel as if I've birthed something into the world.

This investment in Crypso comes amid a crash in the value of cryptocurrencies.
