<ul class="summary-list"><li>NEX creates "controllable and IP-consistent" image-generation models for creative tasks.</li><li>Foundation Capital led the company's $3.5 million seed round.</li></ul>Creating an advertising campaign is no easy feat. "It's a whole operation," said NEX CEO Darius Lam. To pull off a campaign, major brands fly celebrities and athletes to a studio, hire professional photographers, and shoot images with the product they're marketing, whether it's jewelry or a handbag, said Lam. "Gathering a set of images might cost thousands or tens of thousands of dollars."Lam aims to change that with NEX, which develops AI image tools for entertainment, gaming, and marketing. Founded in late 2023, the company recently raised a $3.5 million seed round led by Foundation Capital, with participation from Point72 Ventures.NEX creates "controllable and IP-consistent" image-generation models for creative tasks, according to its website. Instead of time-intensive and costly photoshoots, customers can automatically generate images for a fraction of the cost, Lam said.NEX does this by enabling users to generate images inspired by other images, not just text inputs, in a "real-time canvas." The platform gives users a high degree of control by enabling enhancements to image quality and adjustments to color, pose, or depth in the images.<div type="image" title="Set of three images generated by NEX model" height="1211" width="3431" msid="112834896" hostid="261" sizebytes="434608"></div>Additionally, NEX can integrate with customers' data to generate content consistent with their IP. The startup's tech can also tailor the AI models based on a customer's existing data, a process called finetuning, or even develop models from scratch. For example, "if you are a film studio that's been operating for decades and you have access to huge amounts of data," said Lam. "Then we could effectively build the model from scratch and it would be completely IP safe."NEX initially took a consumer-focused approach, attracting nearly 100,000 users within a few months of launching. But the company has since pivoted to targeting business users, selling to small businesses and enterprise customers. The startup now generates revenue by charging up to $50 a month per user for access to its platform and through fees for model development and maintenance.While models like OpenAI's Dall-E and consumer-focused Midjourney are popular, many don't offer the level of control and customization that design professionals require, said Lam. Some customers may seek to develop in-house models on top of open-sourced ones but it ends up being very expensive, he added.Setting up and onboarding machine learning engineers, GPUs, and infrastructure is very difficult and costly. "It's much easier to work with a provider like NEX that not only is building the models but can integrate the models directly with applications that their creative teams can use."Other visual AI companies include BRIA, which raised a $24 million Series A in March and targets enterprise users, and Cuebric, an early-stage company focused on the film production process.Lam leads a small team of four employees at the young startup. Before founding the company, he was the head of product for computer vision at Cerebras Systems, which develops AI chips and confidentially filed for an IPO earlier this year. While companies like Adobe and Autodesk thrived in the internet age, Lam expects AI to completely upend the software landscape for creative tasks. This transformation will extend to areas like 3D design for game development, product design for software development, and visual creation for entertainment. Lam's vision for NEX is to be the "visual media tool for the AI era."

Visual AI startup NEX raises $3.5 million seed round led by Foundation Capital

Through Narya, he continues to hold a portfolio of investments in several startups, though he gave up his role as a partner there in 2022 and doesn't actively run or advise any of the companies.<h2 id="4b0a6db6-89d6-4a96-93e8-e561475e4b10">Vance's early VC career</h2>After a brief stint at a now-defunct biotech startup, Vance got a job at his benefactor <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peter-thiel">Peter Thiel's</a> venture fund Mithril Capital.He went on to work as a managing partner at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rise-of-the-rest-steve-case-jd-vance-2018-1">Rise of the Rest</a>, part of Steve Case's Revolution venture firm. The fund's mission is to invest in companies outside major tech hubs — New York, Silicon Valley, Boston — and Vance, whose outsider persona was cemented by his memoir <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-hillbilly-elegy-transformation-trump-vice-president-2024-7">"Hillbilly Elegy"</a>, was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-venture-capital-opioid-nonprofit-tech-record-ohio-senate-2021-8">seen as a perfect fit for the fund</a>.Vance was active in a number of deals for the firm, including leading investments in storage-sharing startup Neighbor, agtech company AppHarvest, and AI outfit Pryon, Rise of the Rest confirmed.<h2 id="114f37cf-0035-49cd-8b40-1bd02d5bdb6c">Vance co-founded Narya Capital in 2019</h2>After two years, Vance broke out on his own, cofounding <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hillbilly-elegy-jd-vance-launches-vc-fund-backed-by-thiel-2020-1">Narya Capital</a> in 2019 with investments from Thiel, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and VC veteran Marc Andreessen.Vance still owns pieces of the funds that he helped advise. According to his vice president and senate disclosure forms, he has a stake in Narya Capital Fund I, Narya Capital Fund II, and Rise of the Rest Seed Fund.His stake in Narya Capital Fund I is worth between $500,001 and $1 million. His holdings through Narya's Capital Fund II and the Rise of the Rest's Seed Fund are smaller, worth as much as $15,000 and $250,000, respectively, according to his disclosure forms.Through all three funds, he holds a portfolio of investments in dozens of startups. He doesn't actively run or advise any of the companies, and gave up his role as a partner in Narya in December 2022 after winning his senate seat, according to disclosure forms.It's not entirely clear which Rise of the Rest companies Vance has a stake in. The fund has two $150 million investment vehicles and did not disclose which portfolio companies are in which fund.Narya, meanwhile, has only completed one fundraise so far — its $120 million Fund I. The fund has a dozen active investments, according to its website, and because Vance has a stake in the fund, he technically owns a stake in each.The companies vary in their mission: One is a gene therapy company founded by Vivek Ramaswamy's brother, while another is a Catholic meditation and prayer app. Thiel, one of Vance's mentors, is listed as a separate investor in many of the companies, per PitchBook.Some are the type of companies that could work with the government.True Anomaly, an aerospace company for which Narya participated in two rounds of funding, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.trueanomaly.space/newsroom/true-anomaly-selected-for-30m-space-systems-command-contract-in-support-of-victus-haze-tactically-responsive-space-mission">won a $30 million government contract</a> from the US Space Force in April. Slikk promises to deliver clothes in just 60 minutes in <keyword id="19895037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="keywords">Bengaluru</keyword>, where it already operates. Today’s <keyword id="20246469" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GenZ" source="keywords">GenZ</keyword> and young millennials are highly impulsive shoppers, making them a key target group for <keyword id="23077981" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fast-fashion-brands" source="keywords">fast fashion brands</keyword>, says founder <keyword id="23077987" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="akshay-gulati" source="keywords">Akshay Gulati</keyword>. Their impulsiveness is fueled by the constant influx of new trends and designs, alongside faster delivery options. Slikk aims to address this by offering fresh collections from emerging fast fashion brands every week, along with a <keyword id="23077983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="60-minute-delivery" source="keywords">60-minute delivery</keyword> window, providing a unique shopping experience compared to traditional fashion platforms, he adds. While the sizing charts weren’t as detailed as I would’ve liked and there weren’t too many options to choose from, it seemed to do the job — considering the <keyword id="19913824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup" source="keywords">startup</keyword> began operating only recently. But what really caught my attention was that not only did Slikk offer a 7-day return, it also had a “Try and Buy” option. Here, the user would have to pay Rs 50 in addition to the standard delivery fee and Slikk’s delivery executive would wait for 10 minutes at your doorstep so you could try on the products and return what wasn’t to your liking immediately. Pretty neat, no? However, my love affair with Slikk ended sourly almost as soon as it began. After I’d added some pieces of clothing, selected the “Try and Buy” option and applied the first-timer discount coupon, it wouldn’t let me make the payment. I tried selecting both — the Cash on Delivery and Online Payment modes — several times. But the page wouldn’t budge. I even tried using the website, in case there was a glitch with the app, but that didn’t work either. While I was a little disappointed, the experience gave me the impression that Slikk needs a little more time to optimise its user interface and maybe collaborate with more brands before I can start relying on it as a chronic last-minute shopper. Ten percent of all seed investors in scope were women, up from 8% when the first Seed 100 was released in 2021.The final rankings had 35 new investors, 21 who improved their rank, and 39 with the same or lower rank as last year.<h2>AI is storming seed investing and beyond</h2>One reason we look at seed-stage investments is because they tend to be leading indicators of innovation in the coming years. OpenAI released their GPT-4 model just over a year ago. The model reached an inflection point of capability that has ignited the imagination of entrepreneurs and investors worldwide. The result in just one year is the largest-ever rebalancing of how investors allocate seed capital across sectors. In our analysis, AI tech receives over 16% of all seed-investing capital, with a significant jump in the 12 months following GPT-4's release.In the chart below, we show five seed-investment categories to contextualize the growth of AI investment. This is not an exhaustive view of seed-investment sectors. Given that seed investments typically take seven to 10 years to exit, our analysis covers an extended time frame.This year, we updated the model to better approximate the rate at which investments were exiting. We also reduced the penalty for lower investment counts — given the current, slower dealmaking environment compared with earlier years. This also allowed more emerging managers to enter the scope. To earn a spot, at any ranking, on this list is an achievement. Our candidate pool began with over 1,600 investors, a 15% increase from last year's Seed 100 list. The final ranking included 45 new investors, 33 who improved their rank, and 22 who've been on the list more than once.<h2>Women and the Seed 100</h2>That said, we recognize that many great investors aren't on these lists. Because the point of investing is to realize returns, our model looks at both funding activity and exits. And because it typically takes years before a seed investment shows signs of success, or matures to a prominent exit, it takes years to gauge the quality of an investor's track record. Now add in that venture has a long history of being a white-glove industry, with dealmaking very dependent on networks — aka whom you know — and has historically largely overlooked women. That's starting to change and is one of the problems our data-driven approach to investing is designed to solve. That's why, in addition to the Seed 100, using the same methodology, we have crafted the Seed 30 of the best women seed investors.Still, by relying on historical analysis in our model, especially results, our list reflects the difficulties women face. As more women grow their venture careers and sign more deals, and those deals mature to the point where our analysis can measure them, more women will be named among the Seed 100 list ranks. In just the three years we've been doing the Seed 100 project, we've seen our ability to measure the success of more women grow significantly. In our previous two years, the list of women investors we could, with high confidence, name as the best was capped at 25. This year, with hundreds of women in the 1,600 investors we analyzed, we had enough data to grow that list to 30.<h2>The fundraising environment</h2>We also want to note that the 2023 list comes at a time when the venture-capital industry is operating very differently than in years prior. Tribe Capital created what we call a "Weather Report" to gauge capital supply and demand so we can plan for the future. We're in a fundraising desert, and our indicators show that we're only about one-third of the way through this dry patch, with an estimated 18 to 24 months remaining. Interestingly, though, seed investing has proved largely acyclic. Seed-stage companies are designed to operate leanly, as many are often generating little to no revenue while they build their first products and work on their sales and business-model strategies. Harder-hit are the later-stage companies whose strategies are influenced by available capital. We predict that time to market for products will shrink and more value will accrue at the earliest stages of companies than before. But because this happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to be proactive as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recent-college-grad-quit-dream-job-work-from-home-2024-4">we weren't in the office</a>, and try to get my colleagues to give me more work to do. It was a really valuable experience.After graduating, I was adamant I wanted to try something less corporate. My first job out of university was at a tech PR firm. I've always been interested in entrepreneurship, media, and communications. It was a 15-person team when I joined, which made for a startup-like environment — very entrepreneurial and dynamic. I worked with eight clients across AI, cyber security, e-commerce, and business-to-business sectors. That was an inflection point because it diverted my career toward the tech world.I loved working with tech companies and startups, so after nine months, I decided to go in-house and work at a tech company. As a recent graduate, I was still eligible for roles targeted toward recent university graduates which provide a structured career path into a particular sector. I loved the sound of product management. You can work with a bunch of different teams, such as engineering, marketing, and UX; this was similar to the way I worked in PR with different clients. I was lucky enough to secure a grad job in the product team at ICIS, which is a data team within LexisNexis, a software company.My job in product management was instrumental in leading me to venture capital. I understood the key levers in a tech company that influence its growth. I've always liked wearing different hats, and these threads led me to join Playfair, a generalist VC fund.<h2 id="371fbf1a-872d-41fd-a6a6-311ea68a2add">I was so surprised at how relevant my PR experience was</h2>I was so surprised at how relevant my PR experience was because so much of VC is investor relations. It's really important to form friendships with investors, not just transactional relationships. Equally, because I was working with tech companies in my PR role, it was easy to verbalize and justify why I loved tech companies and working with startups in my interview. It's really important for young people in interviews to bring in their past experiences and talk about how it will help them be good candidates.For <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/day-in-the-life-of-gen-z-vc-in-london-2022-7">young people who want to apply to VC</a>, it's really important to figure out the kind of fund you want to apply for. If your background is generalist and diverse, that kind of VC fund would likely suit you. But if you started your career with a technical background, you'd perhaps be suited to a deep tech fund. You should understand where you will add the most value.Being a pandemic graduate also made me less worried about finding a linear career path and sticking to it for five years. During the pandemic, I thought, who knows what will happen in six months? Nothing was certain — it seemed like the pandemic would never end. This impacted my mindset, and I was more willing to take risks and figure out what I actually liked. I think it's also more of a Gen Z trend because we are <a target="_blank" href="https://fortune.com/2024/04/23/gen-zers-millennials-job-switching-accelerating-pros-cons-careers-employment/">more likely to job-hop</a> than previous generations.<h2 id="a0326792-b564-4676-ac2d-e5686145c0cd">You don't need a background in investment banking to get into VC anymore</h2>It may have been true in the past that you need an investment banking background to get into VC, but that's not the case anymore. I've met more people that don't come from banking than do. In my case, at a pre-seed fund, making a financial model from scratch would be less useful a skill to have.VC is such a broad industry — and your experience will be shaped by what stage your fund invests in. The hiring managers usually like young people who have had startup experience, such as being an operator. I've also met so many people who come from software engineering and technical backgrounds and work at deep tech funds. I've also met a lot of people coming from NGO and charity backgrounds. This ultimately speaks to the sector you may want to specialize in once you get into VC.You could also show you have an entrepreneurial mindset to some degree. My hiring managers loved that I had a fashion blog when I was at university and that I would reach out to brands to partner with for my videos. It's really important to show that you love entrepreneurship and working with founders.Try to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-recruiters-hiring-staffing-tech-job-wall-street-headhunters-2024-4">leverage recruiters</a> if you can. At Playfair, we have a very transparent hiring process, and the fund markets the position as much as possible — but that's not the same for all VC funds. I found my job through a recruiter called JumpStart, and it's a very helpful avenue for younger grads.

A few years ago, we asked ourselves a question: Who are the best seed VCs to partner with, based on data analysis?To answer, we spent three years developing and tuning a statistical model that whittles down thousands of potential seed partners into a ranked list of the best-performing ones. This methodology became the basis for the Seed 100 and <keyword id="13790593" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="seed-25" source="Orion">Seed 25</keyword> lists published by Insider.We sought to find seed investors with a track record of investments that do the following:<ul><li>Performed well as indicated by initial public offerings or exits meaningfully above liquidation preference, meaning returns were achieved because the companies became more valuable, not because they raised a lot of money.</li><li>Showed early signs of future success because their portfolios have cured well at the early stage, but have not yet exited.</li><li>Tended to reach growth stage as indicated by Series B and follow-up rounds.</li><li>Had well-rounded success, showing well across all attributes we measured even if they didn't have a single strength.</li></ul>Our methodology begins by examining Crunchbase and PitchBook data to analyze each investor's performance in 25 areas. The model is designed to notice when an investor demonstrates extraordinary skill and shows a high likelihood of continuing to be outstanding.Because our goal is to predict likely future success — rather than simply identify past accomplishments — we excluded from consideration any investor who was no longer active. We also needed a broad enough sample to draw conclusions, so we required investors to have five or more investments between 2008 and 2021. But the list does include solo venture capitalists and angel investors domiciled globally, measured by their investments in US companies.It's worth noting that while we weight each criterion equally, the score our model produces moves a lot with exits — aka IPOs or acquisitions — so "exits" is the most influential category that differentiates investors from the rest of the pack.Because it typically takes a few years to gauge the quality of seed investments — and the investor behind each one — we're reviewing an extended timeframe. On average, we've observed that it takes seven to 10 years from seed investment to exit.To ensure year-over-year consistency for the second annual Insider Seed 100 and Seed 25 lists, we kept the same quantitative approach from last year's lists, but we updated them to cover investors' more recent performance.<h2>Growth and movement in the list</h2>In 2022, 37 new investors were added to the Seed 100 list. And 28 people moved upward — many of them by more than 20 spots — while 33 people moved downward, the vast majority by more than 10 spots. When we looked at year-to-year movement among the top seed investors on these lists, we observed that while performance change was relevant (such as new exits), many of the overall rank changes were a byproduct of growth in the overall population of seed investors.In other words, an investor who dropped in rank didn't necessarily become "worse." Instead, the field of competition became more intense. It's harder to stay in the top 100 as the total pool of seed investors grows.In total, our eligible candidate pool grew about 15% since last year, to 1,400 people, excluding members of the Tribe Capital team.Statistically speaking, the top 20 investors tended to have the tightest distributions of scores among the criteria we measured and enjoyed the highest level of confidence — movement among these top contenders was more notable than what happened lower down the list.<h2>Women and diversity</h2><keyword id="11897927" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="venture-capital" source="Orion">Venture capital</keyword> has historically been characterized and driven by "who you know" versus "what you know." That industry dynamic causes systemic issues, among both investors and founders. If women struggle to get an invitation to the club, it's unlikely they'll find many peers flourishing inside it.This is changing. Today there are many excellent seed investors from various backgrounds who are making savvy bets on young startups. But because it can take up to 10 years for the results of those bets to be seen, there isn't a sufficient track record from enough deals with data that can be validated for many of these rising-star investors to be in contention for the broader Seed 100 list.Nonetheless, we're seeing an encouraging emergence of female seed investors in the venture community, so we've created the Seed 25 list to highlight them. The 2022 Seed 25 list heavily weights toward historical data from 2008 to 2021.Given the activity we see in the market today, we expect female representation to improve over time. In 2020, Women in Venture reported that about 5% of venture-capitalist partners were female. And our 2022 Seed 100 list highlighted 11 women, up from 7 in 2021.In fact, the total pool of eligible female investors grew from 76 women in 2021 to 99 women in 2022, a 30% increase and double the growth rate of the general seed-investor population in scope. Our models further show that the likelihood of success for female investors looks similar to that of male investors; that is, female seed investors have the same probability of success as their male counterparts, so long as they get the opportunity to compete.The same situation is taking place with diverse investors. Many of our team members at Tribe come from diverse backgrounds, and we recognize the inherent challenges of thriving in a system that wasn't built by, or for, people like ourselves. Systematic bias is one of the problems that Tribe Capital's quantitative approach is designed to tackle and address. And we believe that broader representation in the industry, and therefore among the Seed 100, will improve over time. The best seed VCs of 2022 — based on data

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tribe Capital has spent years creating a statistical model to identify the world's best seed investors.</li><li>The model underpins Insider's European <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seed-50-europe-best-early-stage-investors-2022-8">Seed 50</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seed-50-europes-top-female-startup-investors-on-vc-representation-2022-9">Seed 10</a> lists.</li></ul>Tribe Capital invests on the premise that product market fit exists and can be measured. As such, we've adopted data science into all facets of our investing.A few years ago, to augment our network building and deal flow partnerships at the seed level, we began measuring top seed investors in the US and Canada. We developed a proprietary algorithm using Crunchbase and PitchBook data to analyze an investor's performance in about 25 areas. Funding to European startups surged to $116 billion in 2021 but was still less than half the $330 billion raised by startups in North America, <a href="https://news.crunchbase.com/business/global-vc-funding-unicorns-2021-monthly-recap/">according to Crunchbase data.</a>Indeed, the same discrepancy can be found among active investors that have made 5 or more investments in the past decade. In the US we identified a pool of around 4,800 such investors while Europe is home to around 2,600.Acknowledging the earlier stages of the European ecosystem, we decided to modify our algorithm to include investors with a smaller number of investments.This allowed us to better capture investors showing early signs of success, but have not had the chance to build out a long, time-tested track record. We also decided to shorten the list to the top 50, where our confidence remains strong on the statistical significance of these investors' outlier performances.As the ecosystem matures and investments see more outcomes in the following years, we expect this uncertainty to lower and the list to expand and include more rising stars that we see today in the ecosystem.<h1>Diversity in Europe and the UK</h1>We analyzed investors that came from 43 different countries, of which 13% weren't native to the region: there were a few solo venture capitalists and angel investors domiciled globally that made the list.Through our analysis, we found that some foreign investors were able to beat the local's advantage and still command a strong track record despite their geographical distance.When it comes to gender diversity, Europe is similar to the US. Our statistics show that 9.9% of venture partners in the region identify as female.Nonetheless, we're seeing an encouraging emergence of female seed investors in the venture community, and so we've created <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seed-10-the-best-of-europes-female-early-stage-investors-2022-9">the Europe Seed 10 list to highlight them.</a>Given the activity we see in the market today with more women entering the industry, we expect female representation to improve over time.Because historical track records will be a couple of years behind today's diversity composition, many of the rising stars of diverse backgrounds we see today simply don't yet have a long enough track record from enough deals, with data that could be validated, to be in contention for the broader list.<h1>Looking Forward</h1>Though we've put together a list today on who we believe are the top 50 seed investors in Europe, by no means do we think the rankings will remain static.Quite the contrary, the fast-growing venture capital ecosystem in Europe and the UK will bring competition and movement among the ranks larger than what we've seen prior in the US.Our data shows that the region's eligible candidate pool grew 17% and total dollars invested at the seed stage grew by 73% in the past year alone. How Tribe Capital selected and ranked Insider's Seed 50 and Seed 10 lists of the early check-writers in Europe

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Many VCs are optimistic that the frosty conditions of the funding landscape will thaw this year. </li><li>That spells hope for cash-crunched startups most likely to seek funding in the new year. </li></ul>Everyone in the venture capital ecosystem hopes 2024 will be better than 2023 — another year of mass layoffs and sparse funding.The past 18 months have been challenging for many, especially those who haven't experienced such extended economic fragility. We've witnessed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startup-wave-shutdowns-late-2023-vc-2023-8">startup after startup decide to hang up their cleats</a>, thousands of workers get pink slips, and some VC firms show kinks in their armor.But many VCs are optimistic that this year will, at the very least, be slightly better than the state of play in 2023. While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2024-tech-trends-predictions-top-vcs#funding-will-remain-hard-to-come-by-4">startup funding is likely to remain muted</a>, some believe the market will start to thaw next year."We anticipate that fundraising markets will open up in 2024 when compared to 2023, but it'll still be a challenging environment," said Marcos Fernandez, managing partner at Fiat Ventures.Adding to that cautious optimism, analysts at PitchBook in their 2024 US Venture Capital Outlook report, foresee that 2024's funding environment will improve as more capital gets deployed to VC firms. They predict VC fundraising "may be an increase on 2023 values, though it will remain well below 2022's peak." The fundraising landscape could resemble <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vc-deals-broke-records-in-2020-surpassing-150-billion-in-deals-2021-1">2020's US VC trends</a>, they said, which turned out to be a relatively good year for the industry, despite fears about the pandemic.For startups, that means there's a scintilla of hope that readier access to funding becomes available, though the likely capital will remain limited and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2024-tech-trends-predictions-top-vcs#the-flight-to-quality-will-continue-5">reserved for the cream of the crop</a>."Startup founders may think that the worst is over, but we're not out of the woods just yet and that isn't going to immediately change in 2024," said Pegah Ebrahimi, a managing partner at FPV Ventures. "Startup founders should still practice caution."She recommends that companies have a minimum of 12 months of runway, and start thinking about fundraising when that runway is in the 18-month range.With so many companies seeking capital, some VCs expect a logjam in funding, particularly at the earlier funding stages. Many startups raised money during the boom times of 2021. With the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/late-stage-startups-vc-lack-funding-forced-shut-down-2023-10">average time between funding rounds</a> around two years and shrinking, according to Carta data, that means runway is looking pretty slim for many startups heading into 2024."Venture capital funding at the earlier stages has been ultra competitive lately due to heightened scrutiny across the industry, and it's likely going to get even more so," said Brad Svrluga, cofounder and general partner at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/primary-vc-returns-new-york-startups-brad-svrluga-ben-sun-2022-8">New York-based firm Primary</a>. "Due to frosty funding conditions of the past year and a half, many startups that raised seed rounds in 2021 have held off on doing so, but will be forced to go back out and fundraise in 2024."All things considered, this year will be pivotal for the venture capital ecosystem to recover from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-fears-exctinction-event-startup-failure-rate-increase-2023-6">doom and gloom of the past two years</a>, and in some cases, come to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startup-mass-extinction-event-has-begun-venture-capital-2023-6">terms with the harsh realities</a> of the boom or bust startup lifecycle."It'll be a time to make the tough choices after a couple of years of fearing the shoes will drop," said Chuckie Reddy, a partner and head of growth at QED Investors. "While this will be the defensive piece of a VC's work, most are very hungry to go back on offense and will see some energy return to the market. It's been a brutal 18+ months for most that haven't experienced a downturn."

The venture capital funding crunch will continue in 2024, but it won't be as bad 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nikhil Teja Kolli's startup MokSa.ai uses AI-enabled security cameras to curb theft and fraud.</li><li>Since its launch a year ago, MokSa.ai has garnered over 70 customers and $240,000 in ARR.</li></ul>When he was a college student in Kansas, Nikhil Teja Kolli worked a night shift at a convenience store on the edge of the Ozarks. One night, a man lingered inside the store until the other customers cleared out, then approached the counter with a gun stretched in Kolli's direction. The gunman swiped the cash in the drawer and left Kolli frozen. He felt helpless to stop it.Eight months later, he would be held at gunpoint again.He couldn't have known it then, but Kolli would go on to start a business focused on mitigating theft.His startup MokSa.ai, which aims to help <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retailers-using-tech-to-combat-theft-at-self-checkouts-2023-11">businesses curb theft</a> and employee fraud using artificial intelligence-enabled security cameras, launched from stealth less than a year ago. But it already has a raft of paying customers, which is rare among startups of its size. According to Kolli, its real-time monitoring system is in use at over 70 gas stations, liquor stores, and bodegas nationwide and is generating $20,000 a month in recurring revenue.Now, this potent cocktail of machine learning and profits has persuaded investors to provide it with pre-seed funding. MokSa.ai tells Business Insider it closed $1.5 million in a March round led by Array Ventures, with participation from Jay Farner, the former chief executive of Quicken Loans, and The Fund Midwest.The company uses computer vision to automate away some parts of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmarts-anti-theft-technology-is-effective-but-involves-confronting-customers-2023-10">surveillance</a> still done by humans. It makes software for off-the-shelf security cameras that detect suspicious activity — think, a person stuffs a six-pack of beer in their pants or a cashier gives away merchandise to a friend — and sends a real-time notification to the customer dashboard. The alert includes a clip of the incident, which saves the business owner time they might spend playing back hours of camera footage.<div type="image" title="MokSa.ai uses general-use models and customizes them to detect suspicious activity at store locations." height="1123" width="794" msid="109508830" hostid="261" sizebytes="64550"></div>Kolli said the company initially tried to use open-source, pre-trained artificial intelligence models but found that some of these models showed biases representative of the datasets they were trained on. It then tried fine-tuning those models, but Kolli said their performance fell apart. Eventually, it landed on using general-use models that continuously learn as new footage comes in.The company also pays college interns in India to watch footage for suspicious activity and annotate it — a process called data labeling."As we sit and speak, there is new data coming in and these models are getting better," Kolli said.According to Shruti Gandhi, the founder and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solo-general-partners-raising-outside-capital-2020-1">sole general partner</a> at Array Ventures, part of MokSa.ai's magic is its customized models for this use case."The data sets they have gathered in the last two years of being a services company allowed them to deploy trained models in customers from their first week of onboarding," she said. "That is not possible today with a lot of business intelligence companies because most think they're going to get better once they have customer data. So the reason some companies will win over others in the same category is their access to unique, differentiated data."Given that MokSa.ai's software works with a range of internet-connected security cameras, it's positioned itself as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epic-games-google-fortnite-ruling-play-store-apple-lawsuit-trial-2023-12">Android</a> of the surveillance market. The company will also provide a business with the cameras it needs in exchange for signing a multiyear contract. It charges a monthly subscription that scales based on the number of cameras in use.Customers can pay extra to have an operator call them when the system detects an event, and that's as far as MokSa.ai's responsibility goes, Kolli said. It won't contact the police."We are offering surveillance audit platform," he said. He got the itch to build this company after speaking to a friend who owned the gas station and liquor store where he worked in college. The friend had found out an employee had stolen thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and cash and he asked Kolli how technology might be able to catch bad actors. The idea planted the seed for what would become MokSa.ai.Later, Kolli enrolled in the startup accelerator <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-techstars-is-looking-for-in-startup-applications-during-downturn-2023-5">Techstars</a> Detroit, where one of his mentors introduced him to his future investor.Kolli told Gandhi the MokSa.ai story over the phone. He didn't have a pitch deck to show her or any other investor pledges to move her to act. But, the Array Ventures founder bought into the round before the call ended. The next day, Kolli had a term sheet.The investment was a "no-brainer," Gandhi said.The company is now gearing up for growth. MokSa.ai just signed a contract with Royal Ozarks, a large commercial real-estate developer in the South, to deploy its system across 150 store locations. Kolli said the partnership will bring its $240,000 annual recurring revenue to over $1 million this year.The new funding will allow the company to grow its sales and customer support teams as part of this expansion. It's also working to release a mobile app that will allow business owners to view their notifications on the go.In its bid to create a smarter surveillance system, MokSa.ai faces competition from startups like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/security-company-says-3-3-3-perk-good-for-business-2024-2">Verkada, a maker of building security tools</a> that's raised over $360 million in funding, and Rhombus, a newer entrant that just announced $26 million in capital. While these two tout their abilities to detect suspicious activity and send alerts, they both require customers to use their cameras and sensors.That could be the wedge that gives MokSa.ai a chance despite being much younger than its competitors.Gandhi summed it up, "What they're saying is keep your camera, we will figure out the best way to use this camera."
