Also, Aadhaar-enabled e-KYC rose by 16 per cent as 21.47 million Aadhaars were updated successfully in March 2023. While a majority of the authentications transaction numbers were carried out by using biometric fingerprint, it is followed by demographic and OTP authentications, official sources said. Adoption of e-KYC has also significantly reduced customer acquisition cost of entities like financial institutions, telecom service providers and others, they added. The cumulative number of <keyword id="4342439" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aadhaar-e-kyc" source="Orion">Aadhaar e-KYC</keyword> transactions so far has gone past 14.7 billion till the end of March 2023. This can be done on the NSDL portal. It's important to note that the <keyword id="6354751" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax" source="Orion">Income Tax</keyword> department will not process tax returns until your PAN and Aadhaar are linked. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Penalty for not linking PAN and Aadhaar" comment="subhead" text="Penalty for not linking PAN and Aadhaar">Penalty for not linking PAN and Aadhaar</cmsannotation> The IT department has cautioned that if individuals do not link their Aadhaar number with PAN by the due date, their PAN will become inoperative. This will restrict them from using PAN for filing returns, processing pending returns, issuing refunds, completing pending proceedings, deducting taxes at a regular rate, and may also create challenges with banks and financial platforms due to PAN's significance as a vital know-your-customer (KYC) criterion for financial transactions. Not being able to file returns will be a serious handicap as the last day for filing returns is July 31. Also, as per Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, if an individual fails to quote or furnish her PAN as required by the Income Tax Law, a penalty of ₹10,000 can be levied. This penalty can be imposed for each instance of non-compliance with the PAN quoting requirement. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Resolving discrepancies">Resolving discrepancies</cmsannotation> The IT department recently acknowledged in a tweet that many individuals are encountering difficulties when attempting to link their PAN-Aadhaar due to discrepancies in name, date of birth and gender. The department suggests individuals update any relevant information in their Aadhaar and PAN card either through online channels or by visiting authorised Aadhaar and PAN service providers. The tweet also highlights an additional measure taken to facilitate the linking process: the introduction of biometric-based authentication, which can be accessed at dedicated centres of PAN Service Providers (Protean &amp; UTIITSL). According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), updating address details on Aadhaar can be done online through the Self Service Update Portal (SSUP). However, for updating other details such as demographic information (name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number, email) and biometrics (fingerprints, iris and photograph) in Aadhaar, it is necessary to visit a Permanent Enrolment Centre. PAN details can be updated by visiting the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) PAN website - onlineservices.nsdl.com/ or the UTI Infrastructure Technology And Services Limited (UTIITSL) website- pan.utiitsl.com.

Leading fintech platform PhonePe on Wednesday announced it has enabled <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> activation using Aadhaar-based OTP authentication. PhonePe is the first UPI Third Party Application Provider (TPAP) App to roll out the Aadhaar-based UPI onboarding flow that will now enable several crore Indians to become a part of the UPI ecosystem, seamlessly and securely for the first time, the company said in a statement. Under the previous UPI onboarding flow, a valid debit card was mandatory to set up a user's <keyword id="4760578" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upi-pin" source="Orion">UPI PIN</keyword> during the UPI registration process, restricting access for a large number of Indian bank account holders who didn't have a debit card handy. The addition of <keyword id="144117" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aadhaar" source="Orion">Aadhaar</keyword> onboarding for UPI will do away with this restriction, and allow previously under-served populations to experience the convenience and benefits of digital payments. "We are excited to be the first fintech platform to offer Aadhaar-based authentication for our users, making the UPI onboarding flows even more simple and inclusive. They will then receive an OTP from UIDAI, and their respective bank to complete the authentication process. Post this, customers will be able to access all UPI features such as payments and balance checks on the PhonePe App. "This will help expand the overall UPI ecosystem, and also onboard new customers to the digital payments fold. UPI has become a global exemplar, and countries across the world are looking to implement it. Going forward, we are closely working with NPCI to take UPI international," said Agrawal. With 41.5 crore registered users, one in four Indians is now on PhonePe. The company has also successfully digitised 3.3 crores, of offline merchants, covering 99 per cent of pin codes in the country. What is masked Aadhaar card, why do you need it and how to download it

The world loves jargon. In this case, it’s the latest one and much touted new kid on the block in the lending segment -- ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ (<keyword id="9522245" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bnpl" source="Orion">BNPL</keyword>). It sure is not a coincidence that almost every Indian business media has written about this topic in the past few weeks, accelerated by the PR [public relations] blitzkrieg of the lending players, and some of their (potential) advertising spends being a motivator too. Is BNPL much ado about nothing ? Is this lending practice contemporary or is it just the newly coined terminology ? Isn’t the practice the same as the credit system we saw even as early as a few decades ago; the one that our old-fashioned uneducated mom-n-pop kirana store owner gave us as an option -- to buy through the month, and pay as a lump sum later in the subsequent month? His cost of such funding-the-customer was built into expenses (from his sales margins). He did not have any calculator or computer to store CRM [customer relationship management] or any customer database. The only cloud he knew and that existed then was the one above in the skies. There were not even landlines available (easily), let alone the PoS [point of sale] solutions. And more importantly, his customers rarely defaulted in repayments. So why is this sudden chatter about BNPL now? Why is so much private-capital chasing fintech BNPL players globally? Why are the banks, which loved their own credit cards, suddenly pushing for BNPL products too? Why is merchant acquisition becoming the hottest skill in the financial services sector? For a country with over 1.3 billion population, there are only 30 million unique credit card holders in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> (about 3% of total banked population). This huge gap is the actual business opportunity to provide BNPL solutions for various consumer segments. More importantly, the younger consumers seem to prefer BNPL, instead of credit cards (their high interest charges are seen as a deterrent). It’s then no-guess why apart from the purely digitally-led fintech players in India, traditional banks too have entered this vertical. The success of BNPL in the Indian context can be attributed to the fact that it offers formal credit in an easy-to-access way. It is also known as point-of-sale loans. In general, the retailer/merchant pays the BNPL provider a low single-digit percentage of the transaction value. This is equally a product promotion push to increase revenues. The banks and highly-funded fintechs have an advantage with cost of funding, while the banks have that historic funding-cost-advantage, techfins and fintechs (which have large capital to sign off) use the might of their large capital to acquire consumers; and to change consumer behaviour over a long period of time, by using their capital, even if debt markets are as shallow and as conflicted as our market (structurally in absence of deep domestic debt market, banks being a large proportion lender as well as provider of debt to non-banks is the conflict of interest). Hopefully the regulator would indicate their view on this subject, just to align the industry players in terms of regulatory thinking, before this segment grows fast, so that any business model steering could be done by the industry in time, saving precious capital, consumption trends and regulatory worries, if any. Can BNPL be inclusive ? With more keypad literate Indians than literate Indians now, wide availability of mobile services along the length and breadth of the country and lower-priced internet access, digital finance has never looked better before. The pioneering efforts by India with its <keyword id="6367533" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jam" source="Orion">JAM</keyword> trinity [JanDhan-Aadhaar-Mobile] to bring banking access with secured identity and digital to every citizen is a global first. The initiatives such as ‘Digital India’, ‘Make in India’, ‘Startup India’ have inspired many youngsters to develop innovative ideas to solve real-life-consumer-issues. The basics of financial inclusion is to make sure that the consumers have access and choice of products that suit their needs. The brick and mortar distribution of conventional finance has not reached the nook and corner of the country. Digital channels have started making access to finance, especially credit, as easy as searching for something on Google and language no bar. The COVID lockdown fast-paced the digital adoption in almost all consumer segments, including those who were not digitally-led before. Online banking, app usage, and online commerce increased at a rapid pace. Many of these consumer behaviour would have become a habit and won’t make consumers go back to non-digital pre-covid behaviour. All these also helped in the BNPL growth in the past few months, spurred by a plethora of merchant offers across product categories. The larger opportunity set could be using BNPL products for livelihood-enhancing business-productivity needs. This could mean looking at business users like the gig economy and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) stakeholders. Will we see lending players offering BNPL to <keyword id="12386350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sme-/-msme-/-psl" source="Orion">SME / MSME / PSL</keyword> segments with a win-win proposition ? It is only about “ity”s If extending credit is filtered on the basis of consumption, the risk parameters and its consequent lending would differ. Consumption itself is not a bad aspect. Responsible consumption is an ideal expectation from lenders. But lenders can’t judge consumer behaviour, but can very well decide if they want to lend to such consumers’ consumption patterns. <ul><li>Vanity consumption : Financing done for products bought or services used to give instant gratification. (Eg: Botox facial uplift treatment, bridal makeup. ) The challenge for this category of purchase is that the end-use is for “wants” and not “needs”. Absolute critics would even call it “unwanted wants”! </li><li>Sanity consumption : Financing done for products or service acquisition now, by customers who anyways have that affordability-capability but using it more for cash-flow management. (Eg: Consumer electronics, holidays, etc.) While these purchases using BNPL could be well within the budget of the buyer, studies have shown that the objectivity to stick to a financial wellness goal could be shaken, if the BNPL offers are tempting enough to buy yet another product or service. It would be beneficial for the industry at large to come together to build-in the concept of financial wellness assistance for its users. This would help the users conform to their financial plan and not to have any undue credit exposure that hurts their credit scores. And such hand-holding would go a long way in building consumer trust and to reposition BNPL as a safe practice. </li><li>Reality consumption : Anything that can add value to the real economy borrowers, be it for individuals or businesses, and done with responsible finance framework and responsible-credit behaviour would be long-term positive-trust-accretion to the overall industry. (Eg: business or livelihood enhancement loans) </li></ul>Not eating itself for lunch While BNPL surely is the flavour of the season, rational product development and prudent growth would build consumer trust. Valuations alone can’t drive up consumer trust, while they might drive up short-term public hype. Industry players have to build a profitable business model and sustainable service delivery (expectations), as they launch and/or scale BNPL products. If lending is driven well with adequate technology to understand risks, coupled with relevant merchant-partnerships on-the-ground, this can be a good source of financing for the consumers. Reckless lending through BNPL just to grow the AUM [assets under management] or to showcase the business pass-through that could drive-up potential valuations, will ensure that at some point that music will stop. Then that silence will be eerie. With so many conversations and coverage, hopefully BNPL should not become the next four-letter foul-word in the financial world. The better 4-letter-words that the financial sector does well to remember: “Lend”, “tech”, “risk”, “care”. If the industry does not offer improved socio-economic impact with BNPL, it might as well be called ‘Banal Nouveau Product (for) Lending’. After all, there is no free lunch. OPINION: The next four-letter word taking the world of finance by storm

<ul><li><keyword id="3489555" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="upstox">Upstox</keyword>, the second largest stock broker in India, has suffered a massive data breach.</li><li>This breach has exposed user data like Aadhaar, PAN, bank account numbers and more.</li><li>While Upstox did not comment on the data leak, it said it has upgraded its security systems ‘manifold’ on the recommendations of a global cyber-security firm.</li></ul> Popular discount broker Upstox has suffered a massive data breach that has exposed some important data like Aadhaar, PAN and bank account numbers, apart from other personally identifiable information like mobile numbers and email addresses. Upstox is a Delhi-based discount stock broker that allows its customers to buy and sell shares. It is backed by Tiger Global and has over <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/what-made-upstox-indias-second-largest-stockbroker-after-zerodha/articleshow/78745921.cms">1 million customers</a>. “We have upgraded our security systems manifold recently, on the recommendations of a global cyber-security firm. We brought in the expertise of this globally renowned firm after we received emails claiming unauthorised access into our database,” Upstox <a href="https://upstox.com/announcements/customer-support/security-measures/">said</a> on its website, reacting to reports of the data breach. The company said that despite the data breach, the funds and shares of its customers are safe. This is for two reasons – funds in your Upstox account can only be withdrawn to the linked bank account, and the shares are held with the depositories – either Central Depositories Services India Ltd (CDSL) or National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) – and not with Upstox. With that being said, Upstox users have other things to be worried about. Security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia, who <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/over-100-million-debit-and-credit-card-users-data-has-been-leaked-online-from-payments-processor-juspay-amazon-and-swiggy/articleshow/80096472.cms">had earlier tipped Business Insider about Juspay</a> and MobiKwik data breaches, told us that the <keyword id="11082460" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Upstox-data-breach">Upstox data breach</keyword> includes Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank account numbers, mobile numbers and even the photos of signatures. This data could be used by hackers or malicious parties to impersonate users and transact on their behalf without the users’ knowledge. According to Rajaharia, the Upstox data breach was executed due to a compromised Amazon Web Service (AWS) key used by the company. He says that the same AWS key vulnerability was exploited in the MobiKwik data breach as well. Rajaharia shared a data sample with us – the sample revealed user details as reported in the breach. However, we could not verify the authenticity of the sample. The hacking group, ShinyHunter, has taken down the data for now. In addition, Section 33(2) of the act, which mandates disclosure of Aadhaar details for the purposes of national security was scrapped. </li></ul>After four months and 38 days of hearings, the matter has been laid to rest. On 26 September, a five-member bench of India’s Supreme Court, led by outgoing chief justice Dipak Misra, upheld the constitutional validity of the Aadhar ID programme, voting 4-1 in favour of the scheme, and allowed its passage as a money bill. In a verdict read by Justice AK Sikri, the scheme was said to empower the marginalised sections of Indian society. The bench also found that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the government agency in charge of the scheme, had taken adequate measures to prevent the card from being duplicated. Enrollment in the programme was also made necessary for filing tax returns through linking with PAN cards. However, in light of the threats to an individual’s privacy, a number of provisions of the Aadhaar Act of 2016 were struck down. Section 33(2) which mandates disclosure of Aadhaar details for the purposes of national security was scrapped, as was Section 57, under which private companies are allowed to ask for a citizen’s Aadhaar details in order to provide services. This means that Indians don’t have to hand over their Aadhaar info when opening up bank accounts or getting a mobile subscription. Infact, telecom companies have been ordered to delete all the Aadhaar details of their customers. Besides the cardholder, the original Aadhaar number would be known only to UIDAI. No details yet The creation of dummy numbers and the frequency at which it can be generated and used would depend on the design architecture of the system. UIDAI, a statutory authority, is responsible for Aadhaar enrolment and authentication, issuance of Aadhaar numbers as well as ensuring the security of identity information and authentication records of individuals. Its measures on data protection and development of new standards on technologies like Aadhaar-Pay are ongoing. The organization, however, currently finds itself in a situation where the provisions of the very law (Aadhaar Act 2016) under which it was established has been challenged in the country’s highest court of law. Toeing the government directive, banks, utilities and credit card issuers are repeatedly asking customers to link their Aadhaar details to respective accounts by 31 December 2017, failing which services would be discontinued. Critics of Aadhaar are resisting such coercion to link Aadhaar with multiple service providers. They are hoping that some of these rules may change after the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> ruling. The apex court hearing on the Aadhaar case is scheduled to begin on November 28.

To ensure security, Aadhaar may add security layer with dummy numbers

Govt websites leak Aadhaar data! New safeguards to be brought into action

The announcement was made after some rumours cropped up last week about a possible breach in the biometric security of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Aadhaar-beats-even-the-FBIsdata-base-fair-and-square-becoming-the-worlds-largest-biometric-database/articleshow/47068353.cms">Aadhaar database</a>. 
 
The authority has said the reported breach was a one-off incident, in which an employee working with a bank's business correspondent's company made an attempt to misuse his own biometrics. The breach was detected by UIDAI internal security system and appropriate action was taken. 
 A police complaint has been filed against Axis Bank, business correspondent Suvidhaa Infoserve and e-sign provider <keyword id="1662229" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="eMudhra">eMudhra</keyword> for attempted unauthorised authentication and impersonation by illegally storing <keyword id="144117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword> biometric data, said a release by UIDAI. 
 
 "Any unauthorised capture of iris or fingerprints or storage or replay of biometrics or their misuse is a criminal offence under the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Centre-to-link-Aadhaar-with-NPR-chalks-out-a-budget-of-Rs-951-crore/articleshow/47877985.cms">Aadhaar</a> Act," it said.

As per various reports, the government has said having a Permanent Account Number (PAN) is not the only way to plug tax evasion or leaks. "We have been told that making Aadhaar compulsory is in the offing,” an official told ET. Recently, the government made it mandatory to link PAN card with Aadhaar. "Linking financial market transactions to Aadhaar will be an important step to make India a corruption-free country,” Nirmal Jain, chairman, IIFL Group, told ET. "For some of the regional players, the bigger worry is how many clients will remain once Aadhaar is made mandatory. There will certainly be a dip in activity even in IPO market but that will be temporary,” CEO of a brokerage told ET.
