New Delhi: Steel companies in the country are likely to face margin pressure in the third quarter of FY25 as muted steel prices compress spreads, according to a report by Axis Securities. The report stated that the weak demand in China and higher exports from the country have been identified as key factors behind the decline in steel prices. The report highlighted that <keyword id="24048830" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-steel-exports" source="keywords">Chinese steel exports</keyword> reached 92 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) between January and October 2024, marking a 22 per cent year-on-year increase. This has led to an oversupply in the global market, weighing down prices domestically. It said "Weak Chinese domestic demand along with higher Chinese exports has led to a decline in steel prices in India. Chinese steel exports from Jan'24 to Oct'24 stood at 92 MTPA, up 22 per cent YoY" In India, the average price of hot-rolled coil (HRC) steel in the trader's market in Mumbai fell by 8 per cent year-on-year and 6 per cent quarter-on-quarter to Rs 51,802 per tonne in the second quarter of FY25. Spot prices have further declined to Rs 49,000 per tonne, 5 per cent lower than the Q2FY25 average. The report also noted some signs of recovery in China's residential property sector, with increased transactions in major cities following policy measures aimed at boosting demand. However, challenges remain, as the three-month moving average of year-to-date floor space declined by 19 per cent year-on-year in September 2024, remaining in negative territory. It said "China's residential property sector is showing some signs of improvement with the transactions in major cities rising after recent policy measures introduced to boost demand". On the global front, the report noted that the probability of a 25-basis point rate cut by the US Federal Reserve in its December 2024 meeting has fallen to 58.9 per cent, down from 76.8 per cent in October 2024, owing to strong economic data from the US. Additionally, China has removed a 13 per cent export rebate on aluminum and copper, effective December 1, 2024, in response to anticipated tariff measures by the new US administration. These developments highlight the ongoing challenges and potential shifts in the global and domestic steel and metals markets.

Here, it was all about super high monetary stakes, lightning-fast trade deals, and bucketloads of money shifting hands every single second. This wilderness lured millions of individuals with the promise of super duper high returns. But, at what cost? Welcome to the unforgiving, ultra-risky wild west of <keyword id="19991165" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-equity-markets" source="keywords">Indian equity markets</keyword> called the <keyword id="145718" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Futures-and-Options" source="Orion">futures and options</keyword>. Here, everyone seems to just fly right through the bright red-flagged warnings of financial risks to earn even a fraction of these promised returns. Most burn themselves in the process, but carry on nevertheless, as if nothing ever happened. <h2>Chasing the cloudy profits</h2>The data conclusively proves that every 9 out of 10 individuals only lost their hard-earned money in this land. But hey, what do the numbers know? Some hide their losses out of shame, some out of fear. The proponents, meanwhile, proudly boast unusually high returns on their investments, some open social media channels while others encourage their friends and family to take the plunge. Naturally, news of this unstoppable and humongous en-masse migration to the F&amp;O (futures and options) town has reached sheriff <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEBI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SEBI" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="SEBI">SEBI</keyword>, galvanising them into action. After all, it was time to put a leash on this madness and save the common man. The inhabitants of this town doubled in the last 2 years, from 51 lakh in FY22 to 96 lakh in FY24—99.8% of whom were small and mid-income traders. But profits? Well, that's a different, rather completely absent story. <h2>Que Sera Sera, much?</h2>A recent report by SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) that studied profits and losses made by traders in the equity derivatives segment between FY22-24 exposed the mad mania of futures and options trading in India, especially since the pandemic. Per the report, 91.1% of individual traders, or about 73 lakh traders had only lost money trading in futures and options in FY24. Between FY 22-24, over 1 crore traders, or about 92.8% of individual traders, had lost Rs 2 lakh each. But once bitten, twice shy? Well, not in this case. More than 75% of individuals, who had only made losses trading in F&amp;O in FY22 and FY23, continued to trade vigorously in FY24 as well, without any changes in the bottom line, which remained deep in red and negative. So, then all these traders must be uber-rich, with tons of cash and not much care to spare? Nope. 76% of traders in the F&amp;O space in FY24 had an annual income of less than Rs 5 lakh. 2 years ago, their share stood at 71%. And their choice of poison? Options! In FY24, 60% of traders made losses trading in futures, but a whopping 91.5% burnt their funds trading in options. Mind you, futures are riskier than options. With futures, which require significant capital investment, the buyer and seller both are contractually bound to adhere to the pre-determined strike price of the futures or options contract, irrespective of whether the prevailing prices are higher or lower (and thus, resulting in losses for either the buyer or seller). With options, since this adherence ain't necessary, individuals end up taking debt to take highly leveraged positions while trading here. <h2>Scale of the explosion</h2>Anyone who trades even infrequently will tell you that a demat account is the mitochondria or powerhouse of the trading cell. As of August 2024, India had over 17.1 crore <keyword id="20957284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="demat-accounts" source="keywords">demat accounts</keyword>, which are a prerequisite for trading in the markets. India is the 9th biggest country in the world, in terms of total demat accounts. Did you know that our demat accounts are at par with the entire population of Bangladesh? Talk about scale! Just 4 years ago, in March 2020, this number was a mere 4 crore. Naturally, the total F&amp;O turnover on both <keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="NSE" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="NSE">NSE</keyword> and BSE has hit the roof, and also broken it. As of October 4, 2024, the total futures and options turnover on NSE stood at a massive Rs 4,78,27,27,750.30 crore. As of September 2024, India's STT mop-up had gone past Rs 26,000 crore. Traders have to pay STT whenever they buy or sell any security in the market. So, more trading brings in more STT, and hence, more revenue for the government, so they're not really complaining. After all, this is certainly what they'd call enviable growth. As of August 2023, our STT collection stood at about Rs 21,599 crores. And in FY20-21, India's STT collection had been Rs 16,000 crore. If only our salaries also managed to grow at this rate! <h2>So, what's happening?</h2>Two things. One, it's the big bulls who are raking in all the moolah. And it's the younger lot (those aged under 30) who are propping them up for this. In FY24, 43% of individual traders in the market were less than 30 years of age. In just one year, this number has swelled by 12 percentage points from just 31% of individual traders. But who says ageing is bad? Wrinkles and silver hair seemingly have a propensity of incurring lesser losses in the market. In FY24, only 79% of traders aged above 60 years made losses, as compared to 93% of those aged below 30. Small and mid-income traders, which make up 98% of the total trader base, witnessed average losses per person of Rs 65,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh in FY24 in futures and options, respectively. The winner here? Clearly, the big bulls, who declared an annual income of over Rs 1 crore, ended up with average profits of Rs 96,000 per person this year. <h2>What’s the sheriff up to?</h2>The government has finally swung into action, hiking the STT rate for F&amp;O during this year’s budget. Effective October 1, 2024, the STT on futures stands at 0.02%, up from 0.0125%. For options, it was upped to 0.1% versus 0.0625% previously. Small margins, but huge impact oncoming. Says Puneet Sharma- CEO and Fund Manager at Whitespace Alpha, “SEBI aims to enhance market stability while safeguarding investor interests, reflecting the regulator's intent to balance risk management with market participation”. But this might come with its own share of challenges, too. “Stricter norms around leverage, transparency, and capital adequacy could limit the ability of investors to determine their own risk appetite, thereby stifling innovation in trading strategies. Over-regulation in an environment that thrives on strategic flexibility and creativity could dampen the market’s dynamism, affecting India's competitiveness in the global derivatives landscape”, he observes. SEBI recently came out with a set of guidelines that aim to thwart <keyword id="19972907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="keywords">retail investors</keyword>' participation in futures and options and hinder them from taking undue risks. Here's a quick recap of what's to come for the residents of the F&amp;O town Margin Requirements: To battle the high volatility and chaos which is generally seen on expiry days(i.e the last mandated date, post which an option becomes invalid), SEBI will put in place an extreme loss margin (ELM) of 2% for all open short options on the day of expiry. Translation? Traders will need to pony up more cash upfront, leaving them with fewer funds to take on risky bets. It ain't a choice: No more of one expiry every single day! Going ahead, an exchange like BSE or NSE will just be able to offer weekly expiries, that too, only on one benchmark index, as opposed to an entire buffet it currently offers. At present, NSE offers weekly options contracts for its financial index, bank and midcap indices. But say goodbye to this, and hello to derivatives on only 1 index per exchange. Raising the bar: Effective November 30, 2024, the minimum contract value for index derivatives will be upped to Rs 15 lakh, from the present Rs 5-10 lakh. The hope is that by making it ultra-expensive to enter these trades, investors will be dissuaded from taking on risky trades. Pay upfront: Starting February 2025, those trading in options will have to pay the entire options premium upfront, even before their trades are executed. This is because options generally carry very high leverage, and paying a significant sum upfront can force traders to think twice. Invigilation Pro Max: Starting April 1 2025, to make sure that the number of positions for equity index derivatives does not slyly slip over the mandated limit, especially on expiry days when trade volumes are huge, the exchanges will have to take a minimum of 4 position snapshots randomly. The question is, will these injections of sobriety be enough to calm down the steroid-fed bull of the futures and options market in India? Well, only time and market turnover will tell! But what started as a standard strategy meeting resulted in a yearslong re-evaluation and rebuild across the market maker's entire technology stack.Maurone said the meeting was a rallying cry for simplicity and walked away with an assignment he positioned like this: "Imagine if you were an airline, could you, on one PowerPoint slide, show 10 to 15 systems that fit together simply and together represent the only systems needed to get all the way from selling a ticket to delivering the passenger."Now, founder Ken Griffin's market maker is revamping its core trading infrastructure, which is the collection of systems and technologies that executes one in every four equity trades in the US.Over the past year or two, Maurone and Josh Woods, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/citadel-securities-ceo-peng-zhao-olympics-career-advice-interns-2024-8">Citadel Securities</a>' chief technology officer, have been strategizing to consolidate redundancies, mitigate operational complexities, and reduce the cost of trading and entering new businesses. They're looking across the entire lifecycle of a trade as a blueprint for the rebuild.Since its inception in 2002, Citadel Securities has used predictive analytics, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/citadel-securities-data-ken-griffin-markets-assets-2023-6">data</a>, and technology to allow buyers and sellers to trade assets by providing market liquidity. It uses algorithms to capture profit from small differences in prices. In the past two decades, the market maker has expanded in the types of clients it works with, the products it trades, and the exchanges where it trades.The goal is to prepare the firm for what lies ahead while delivering more resiliency and capabilities to clients today, Woods said."This is a way to, over time, keep your agility. I almost look at it as the stretching of business," Woods told Business Insider. "If you don't do these things, your technology stack eventually gets more rigid than you'd like, and then when you need to stretch, you're unable to."<h2 id="c49a2ec2-8ae0-4677-96cd-94e7f2168232">Building Citadel Securities' trading infrastructure of the future</h2>In the last few years, Citadel Securities pushed into credit trading, expanded its rates franchise, and introduced an institutional options offering. It has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-wall-street-executives-rising-stars-investing-trading-2024#gidan-dan-35-citadel-securities-13">scaled up its operations in Asia Pacific</a> and launched rates trading in EMEA; it is now active in more than 50 markets across 150 venues. As it grew, it developed a vast patchwork of different technology solutions to meet its needs.But as Citadel Securities looks to continue to grow, it needs to position its technology to easily break into new markets, asset classes, and geographies. The firm is aiming to do that by re-architecting key systems in a standard, global way, Maurone said."Part of this is just evolving the technology and being able to take a step back with fresh eyes and say, 'Well, now that we've built out a lot of these offerings across all these different markets with so many different types of counterparties, we just have a much bigger set of requirements that we're looking at,'" Woods said. "And so how do we look at all those and try to find the patterns and the best way of operating?"Take the diversity in exchanges, which vary dramatically in terms of fee structures, operating hours, and clearing requirements. Instead of relying on individual systems that cater to individual exchanges, the firm is aiming to adapt its back-end systems to be flexible enough to accommodate many exchanges and onboard new ones efficiently.Asset types are another area where there's lots of underlying variance, especially in terms of data structures. And differences in trading practices — from systematic to high-touch — will require Citadel Securities to rethink those underlying systems.Through several progressive changes to its tech stack, Maurone said he hopes that in 2025, the firm will be entirely trading in a system that reflects its goal to reduce operational complexity and redundancies."A lot of times, it requires reorienting how we look at the problem. Before, you couldn't really see the pattern because you're only looking at one little slice of the problem, but now that you see it across all these different domains, it becomes clear that there's more we can do," Woods said.<h2 id="9a4344c0-c7a7-4dfd-9e99-50d4262adc9b">How product managers are bridging business and technology</h2>Wall Street firms have long turned to consulting agencies, like McKinsey or Deloitte, to shepherd tech execs and other C-suites through a transformative process such as this. Instead, Citadel Securities has turned to an internal group of product managers and COOs — some of whom spent years working at consulting firms — to oversee the vision and execution of its technology.Building out this internal muscle, Maurone said, has filled a need that an external consultant never really could. "We need to live and breathe and own the strategy," Maurone said, adding that much of the software is created in-house. The operation is overseen by firmwide COO Matt Culek, who works closely with CEO Peng Zhao and President Jim Esposito on the firm's most challenging issues.Maurone's team supports Citadel Securities' technology organization, and he manages a team of 15 people. They set metrics, ensure engineers meet their delivery goals, and integrate customer feedback.Maurone, the first person with a product-management hired within the technology organization at Citadel Securities five years ago, has been slowly building out this team of product managers."Quite often, people in Jeff's org are thinking about the fundamental business problem we have," said Woods."They have a lot of impact and have on multiple occasions reshaped what we end up building, which is very different than what you'd get if somebody was just looking at the requirements," and following orders, Woods said.

Market-making giant Citadel Securities is rebuilding the tech that powers its trades as it eyes growth

Markets regulator <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sebi" source="keywords">SEBI</keyword> has proposed expanding the <keyword id="22367248" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainable-finance-framework" source="keywords">sustainable finance framework</keyword> in the <keyword id="20922662" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="securities-market" source="keywords">securities market</keyword> by introducing a new category of financial instruments. This category will include <keyword id="20518791" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Social-Bonds" source="keywords">social bonds</keyword>, <keyword id="22623575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sustainable-Bonds" source="keywords">sustainable bonds</keyword>, and <keyword id="22623576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sustainability-linked-Bonds" source="keywords">sustainability-linked bonds</keyword>, in addition to the current <keyword id="22819966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-debt-securities" source="keywords">green debt securities</keyword>. It aims to provide issuers with flexibility in raising funds for projects that align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. In a consultation paper released on Friday, SEBI proposed that issuers, in addition to existing green debt securities, should be allowed to raise funds through issuance of social bonds, sustainable bonds, and sustainability-linked bonds. These bonds will collectively be known as ESG Debt Securities. This will enable issuers to raise money for more sustainable projects, assisting in closing the funding gap for the Sustainable Development Goals. SEBI said it received representations from market participants including the Confederation of Indian Industry to expand the scope of the regulatory framework pertaining to sustainable finance to include social bonds, in addition to existing green debt securities as a mode of raising sustainable finance, in line with global practices. As per the consultation paper, SEBI said, it "proposed to introduce the concept of sustainable securitised debt instruments for the purpose of providing originators of the underlying credit facilities which are within such international or domestic frameworks for sustainable finance, and thereby provide investors as well an opportunity to participate in the sustainable securitised debt instruments". The consultation paper also addressed the initial and continuous disclosures for sustainable securitised debt instruments that would be based on international frameworks. Initial disclosures could be made in the offer document for the securities, while continuous disclosures might be included in annual reports or other mandated formats. The markets watchdog also suggested that issuers of ESG debt securities and sustainable securitised debt instruments appoint an independent external reviewer or certifier, to facilitate transparency and credibility. The review could take various forms including, second-party opinions, verification, certification, or scoring/ rating. SEBI proposes expansion of sustainable financial framework in securities market

Garuda Aerospace, which produces small and medium category drones, had partnered with Greek manufacturer Spirit Aeronautical Systems early this year. It has also signed a pact with French aerospace giant Thales to promote growth and innovation in India's drone sector. Spirit Aeronautical specialises in rotary and fixed-wing weaponised drones. The foreign investors made a net purchase of <keyword id="19925781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equities" source="keywords">equities</keyword> amounting to Rs 4,897.16 crore, according to data from the <keyword id="20070086" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Securities-Depository-Limited" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Securities Depository Limited" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="National Securities Depository Limited">National Securities Depository Limited</keyword> (<keyword id="20519694" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSDL" source="keywords">NSDL</keyword>). This marks a significant shift from the previous week (August 12-17), when <keyword id="20015748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="keywords">foreign portfolio investors</keyword> were net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 7,769.73 crore. Despite this week's positive inflow, the overall net investment by foreign investors in August remains negative. So far this month, foreign investors have sold equities worth Rs 16,305 crore in the Indian market. This trend highlights the volatility in foreign investment patterns during the month. Interestingly, while foreign investors were net sellers in August, <keyword id="20148367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-investors" source="keywords">domestic investors</keyword> played a crucial role in supporting the Indian stock market. According to official data from the National Stock Exchange (<keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords" topicspecial.url="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/marketstats/pid-40,exchange-nse,sortby-value,sortorder-desc.cms">NSE</keyword>), domestic investors have consistently bought into Indian stocks, purchasing equities worth Rs 47,080.38 crore in August. This strong domestic participation has provided stability to the market amid the fluctuating foreign investment trends. "It is essential for policymakers to continue fostering an environment that encourages domestic investment while ensuring that foreign investors remain an integral part of the market. Balancing the interests of both domestic and foreign investors will be key to sustaining growth and stability in the Indian stock market. From 6.6 % in December 2012, India's share in the MSCI EM Index has gone up to 20 % plus in August 2024" said Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert. Earlier in July, net foreign investments in the Indian stock market reached Rs 32,365 crore as the foreign investors were net buyers, as per data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). This marked a continuation of strong foreign interest following June, when Foreign Portfolio Investors (<keyword id="19930635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPIs" source="keywords">FPIs</keyword>) purchased Indian stocks worth Rs 26,565 crore on a cumulative basis. FPIs, which involve investors acquiring foreign financial assets, play a significant role in influencing market dynamics by channeling substantial funds into the Indian equity market.
