The movie, written by Duane Adler and Cheryl Edwards, also tackled prejudice, white privilege, and the systemic racism experienced by Black teenagers in Chicago.</p><p>Tension is built throughout the movie as Sara, a naive suburban white girl, experiences culture shock after she transfers to a majority Black high school.</p><p>"This was a major studio film with a studio budget and all that, and at the time it was extremely rare for there to be a Black man as a co-lead in a romantic movie with a white girl, or with any girl, period," Thomas told Insider during a recent conversation.</p><p>"In 2021, I still don't think we see enough Black men on screen as leading men - as love interests. It's still too rare in my opinion," he continued. "To have been able to do that 20 years ago and to have people still love it and know it has impact and staying power, that's something that I will forever be proud of, just as a Black man."</p><p>Insider spoke with Thomas, as well as his costar Julia Stiles, about how the movie tackled race and racism through two teens falling in love.</p><h2>Thomas felt the movie handled its Black characters and storylines 'with nuance'</h2><div type="image" title="Derek Sara talking Save the Last Dance " height="1408" width="1878" msid="80303051" hostid="261"></div><p>"Save the Last Dance" opens with Sara (Julia Stiles) failing to secure a spot at the prestigious dance school Juilliard after she falls during her audition at the very moment her mom gets into a deadly car accident.</p><p>Sara is then sent off to live with her dad in Chicago. It's here, in her new majority-Black high school, that Sara meets Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas), a fellow senior who wants to go to med-school to become a pediatrician.</p><p>Sara's ballet training does her no favors at the local dance club Stepps, and she strikes up a friendship with Derek, who starts teaching her hip-hop and eventually encourages her to reapply to Julliard.</p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.insider.com/save-the-last-dance-scene-dance-julia-stiles-sean-patrick-thomas">'Save the Last Dance' costars Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas break down the movie's iconic dance scene 20 years later</a></em></p><p>As Sara and Derek fall in love, Derek's friends and sister Chenille (Kerry Washington) confront him over his changing priorities and Sara's lack of understanding when it comes to the systemic racism felt by Black students in her new school. </p><p>Thomas said he felt "Save the Last Dance" handled the intricacies of an interracial relationship very thoughtfully.</p><p>"I feel like it was handled fairly adeptly and with nuance, in the sense that there were lot of places in the script, and as we were shooting it, where things could have slid into stereotypes," Thomas said, reflecting on how the movie handled its Black characters.</p><div type="image" title="Julia Stiles Save the Last Dance audition MTV Films Paramount" height="1416" width="1888" msid="80303053" hostid="261"></div>"The romance could have been more about, 'Wow, he's Black and that's different,' or 'She's white and that's different,' and it wasn't about that. It was about these two people who connected on a human level," he added.<p>"To that extent, race was almost a side issue," Thomas continued. "But at the same time, we didn't shy away from it either, obviously. [At one point in] their relationship where Derek felt like they were getting closer and she kinda backs away and freaks out, race is a part of why she does that."</p><p>"And that's real," he continued. "And [in the movie] it happens in a way where it doesn't demonize her, you know? And I think that's something that people respond to - the authenticity in that and how that can really happen and that can really be overcome."</p><h2>One of the stand-out scenes in the movie happens when Chenille confronts Sara </h2><div type="image" title="Julia Stiles Sara Save the Last Dance MTV Films Paramount" height="1403" width="1870" msid="80303055" hostid="261"></div><p>Stiles, who was 19 while filming the movie, said she learned a lot about race after the film premiered on January 12, 2001.</p><p>"Making the movie opened my eyes to a lot of things that I wasn't aware of," she told Insider. "It's my white privilege that allowed me to go into making that movie thinking, 'Are people still racist? Or do people disapprove of a Black guy and a white girls getting together? That seems crazy to me.'"</p><p>"But obviously I was ignorant in many ways because now more than ever we see that those biases and prejudices certainly still exist," she continued. "That is what Nikki meant about you up in our world."</p><p>"There's only one world, Chenille," Sara replies.</p><p>"That is what they teach you," Chenille says. 'Save the Last Dance' costars said film handled its interracial relationship with 'nuance' and authenticity

"I know in my case, I'd heard things that made me feel like I wasn't necessarily everybody's first choice for the role."</p><p>"There was this din of [both] support and criticism or skepticism from the studio," Stiles added. "A lot of different opinions got filtered and somehow made their way back to us."</p><h2>Both Stiles and Thomas remember feeling like a tight-knit team on set, working together to pull the movie off</h2><div type="image" title="Derek talking to Sara Save the Last Dance " height="1416" width="1889" msid="80293537" hostid="261"></div><p>Stiles, who had costarred alongside the late Heath Ledger in "10 Things I Hate About You" in 1999, was launched into a new level of fame with this movie. Thomas was in a similar position as his biggest previous film credit was 1999's "Cruel Intentions," in which he played a musician named Ronald.</p><p>"What I loved about working with [Julia] was that every time I saw her in the morning, when we rehearsed and were getting ready to go, I felt like we had a common understanding - that we understood that there are those that doubted whether or not we could do this and we were gonna prove them wrong," Thomas said.</p><p>"We were going to do excellent work," he added. "I did feel like we were a team. I felt like I could rely on him because there was this sort of undercurrent of pressure that comes with being the lead in a big studio movie and that was really only my second time experiencing that."</p><p>She added that she was also "very young, so you can feel it. "And I can say, in my now-20 more years of experience working in film, he has a maturity and a confidence, despite the skepticism that he was talking about, and a groundedness that I find really rare in actors and particularly in male actors."</p><p>Stiles also remembers Thomas as being a "stable rock" for her, particularly with the <a href="https://www.insider.com/save-the-last-dance-scene-dance-julia-stiles-sean-patrick-thomas">added pressure she put on herself</a> when it came to learning the ballet dancing required for the role. </p><h2>Stiles said working on 'Save the Last Dance' helped her learn how to 'ignore' skeptics</h2><div type="image" title="Julia Stiles Save the Last Dance audition MTV Films Paramount" height="1416" width="1888" msid="80293544" hostid="261"></div><p>"Something that I really learned while making that movie was how to ignore those voices," Stiles said. "That was my first experience of it, but I've learned that that is a huge part of studio filmmaking."</p><p>"They're always going to doubt. They're always going to doubt until the movie is successful," she continued. "They are always going to be skeptics from the studio. You can't really focus on that or you'll implode."</p><p>"Save the Last Dance" surpassed expectations when it <a href="https://ew.com/article/2001/01/17/save-last-dance-tops-holiday-weekend-box-office/">knocked "Cast Away" off the top-spot in the box office</a> in 2001, earning just over $27 million in its first weekend.</p><p>When it surpassed expectations, Stiles said that it allowed her and Thomas to "breathe a sigh of relief." She added, "That was a huge boon for me and Sean." </p><p>"Save the Last Dance" went on to earn over $131 million worldwide, and remains <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-dance-movies-2016-10">one of the most memorable dance-dramas ever made to this day. </a></p>

"I remember watching her do it and I remember being excited watching her do it."</li></ul><p>This week marks the 20th anniversary of the iconic 2001 teen drama "Save the Last Dance."</p><p>The movie's costars, Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas, played Sara and Derek, a teen couple who fall in love over their shared passions for dance despite a jealous ex-girlfriend and an at-times judgmental sister.</p><p>"Save the Last Dance's" emotional climax comes when Sara successfully lands a spot at esteemed performing arts school, Juilliard, by auditioning with a contemporary-freeform piece that blends Sara's ballet training with the hip-hop choreography Derek had been teaching her for months. </p><p>"I loved the training and there's a part of me that loves to dance," Stiles told Insider during a recent phone call. "But also the culture of dancers is very, very critical. I just remember feeling like I was never going to get it right. I was never going to perfect it. So I wanted to keep doing take after take, after take, after take."</p><p>Insider caught up with both Stiles and Thomas to learn more about how that memorable audition scene came together, and what it was like working on the set of "Save the Last Dance" together two decades ago.</p><h2>Both Stiles and Thomas had to learn how to dance professionally, with help from ballet trainers and choreographer Fatima Robinson </h2><div type="image" title="Sara Derek dance lesson Save the Last Dance " height="1402" width="2500" msid="80287090" hostid="261"></div><p>In order to get in the groove of Derek, who is able to dance circles around Sara in the local Chicago club Stepps, Thomas had to train with the movie's choreographer, the <a href="http://www.fatimarobinson.com/">legendary Fatima Robinson</a>, who's worked with Michael Jackson, Pharrell Williams, Rihanna, and other superstars.</p><p>"Fatima is just so expert at what she does that you feel like, 'If I can get past her, then I'm doing OK. I'm doing a good job,'" Thomas said in a separate call with Insider last week. </p><p>When he first got the role, Thomas went to Los Angeles to meet Robinson and do some preliminary movement work. I'm doing my thing. I'm all right,' and she looked at me like, 'Um, no. You're not there yet,'" Thomas said, laughing.</p><p>"What was good about that was whatever ego or arrogance I had about my ability to do whatever she was asking me to do, she let me know, 'Nuh-uh, you need to start from scratch. You need to start from ground zero. And when we're going to figure this out," he added.</p><p>Once everyone arrived in Chicago to begin rehearsals and film the movie, Thomas continued working with Robinson and her dance colleague Richmond Talauega.</p><p>"Between the two of them, they gave me the confidence that I could get up there on camera and pretend like I knew what I was doing because I'm not a dancer at all," Thomas admitted. </p><p>By the time cameras were rolling, Thomas and Stiles had built their own rapport and were able to bring the dynamic of expert and novice to the screen during scenes where Derek taught Sara hip-hop dance moves. </p><p>"We had a good shorthand and got to know each other well enough to joke around, and play around, and have fun with things," Thomas said. "It was very authentic, very genuine."</p><h2>Stiles spent two months, plus extra weekends, working on the final audition dance sequence</h2><div type="image" title="Derek watching Sara's audition Save the Last Dance " height="1399" width="2500" msid="80287092" hostid="261"></div><p>To nail the final audition scene, which was created by Robinson with input from ballet choreographer Randy Duncan, Stiles had to learn ballet from scratch.</p><p>Thankfully, the actress had experience with hip-hop and more contemporary dancing, but still needed months of practice to nail Robinson's choreography. </p><p>"Oh my goodness," Stiles said when asked what she remembers about the audition scene. "We did like two months of choreography and dance rehearsals and training before we started filming. And then once we started filming, on the weekends we would do more choreography and rehearsals of that sequence."</p><p>Stiles recalled that even as the weeks went on, Robinson was "refining the movements" for the scene.</p><h2><div type="image" title="Julia Stiles Save the Last Dance audition MTV Films Paramount" height="1417" width="2500" msid="80287094" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>"Just when I would get comfortable with the moves, Fatima would change them or add to it," Stiles said. "She definitely kept me on my toes, but I remember I loved working with her and I just thought she was so innovative."</p><p>In line with the movie's narrative arc, Stiles filmed the final audition scene towards the end of the movie's schedule. Now, 20 years later, that sequence stands out for fans and Stiles as it was the most memorable part of her experience and a big personal focus. </p><p>"I was rehearsing every weekend and every second that I had to myself," Stiles said. "That was my focus throughout the whole filming: Getting to the day when we were going to film the audition and not messing it up."</p><p>The audition scene wound up being mostly night shoots, so both Stiles and her double (who performed the piece and captured the more technical ballet moves) would sometimes dance at three o' clock in the morning, Stiles recalled, which was "an added challenge." </p><p>"One thing that saved me was the nature of making a film and how you have multiple angles and multiple takes," Stiles said. "In an actual audition, you get one chance to do the best you can from start to finish, but I had the opportunity to keep refining it."</p><p>In the scene, Derek is standing supportively just off-stage, which meant Thomas was part of the overall filming schedule that week, too. </p><p>"I do remember that Julia had worked really, really hard on that whole routine," Thomas said. His reactions we see in the movie were likely the true response he had to watching Stiles perform the audition choreography.</p><p>"There are a lot of actors who, if they're not on camera, they don't do [the scene]," Thomas said. "They just say, 'Oh I'm going to go hang out in my trailer and you pretend that you see me there, but Julia is the opposite of that."</p><h2>Stiles says she's never gone back to watch the movie or her dance performance: 'I'd be too critical of myself'</h2><div type="image" title="Derek Sara Save the Last Dance " height="1378" width="2500" msid="80287095" hostid="261"></div><p>Even though the scene has remained a staple in the dance-movie genre legacy, in 20 years Stiles has never gone back to watch her performance.</p><p>"No, God, no," Stiles said when asked if she's rewatched the movie recently. "A hundred percent no. No way. Because first of all, I'd be too critical of myself and I know that I'd like beat myself up about how I could've done the pirouettes better or whatever - like my port de bras was kind of saggy."</p><p>"And I don't plan to, really," she continued. "I think it would be weird if, in the little spare time I have, I was sitting at home watching my own <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword>. I think there'd be something wrong with me."</p><p>Still, even decades later the scene is the subject of <a href="https://twitter.com/jadorejanayy/status/1283086468869550081?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1283086468869550081%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdigg.com%2F2020%2Fsave-the-last-dance-routine-julia-stiles-what-were-we-thinkingking">people's conversations and recreations of it online</a> garner millions of views. </p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.insider.com/best-movie-dance-scenes-2018-10">30 of the best movie dance scenes of all time</a></em></p><p>For both Stiles and Thomas, the one word they use to describe how they feel about "Save the Last Dance" now is "pride."</p><p>"So many actors go through their careers and they don't get to do things that stand the test of time - they don't get to do things that people are still asking about 20 years later," Thomas said.</p><p>"So to be here at this point, and people still stop me on the street, in the supermarket, everywhere, telling me how much they loved that movie," he continued, "the overwhelming feeling I have now is just pride because I know how rare that is."</p><p>"I feel really proud and grateful to have been part of something and to have made something [that] still resonates with people and still entertains people so many years later," Stiles added. "That's what you hope for as a performer and a storyteller."</p>

Part college show, part 'Hunger Games' — with all the heart, satire and raunch of 'The Boys,'" <a href="https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/the-boys-spinoff-amazon-1234782755/">Variety</a> reported.</p><p>"The Boys" showrunner Eric Kripke told <a href="https://ew.com/tv/the-boys-season-2-finale-digital-cover/">Entertainment Weekly</a> that the idea for the spin-off came about organically in January 2020, especially after noticing that there aren't college shows with this premise.</p><p>"It's a Vought-owned college where young kids with powers are trained as to how to be proper superheroes, all leading to an NBA-style draft at the end of the year," Kripke told <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/superheroes-are-inherently-maga-the-boys-boss-on-his-zeitgeisty-hit-4077486/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>. "It's sort of like a college sports show meets 'Fame,' because they also have to go to acting classes and marketing classes. It's going to be a very character-driven, hopefully incredibly realistic, college show."</p><div type="image" title="Chance Perdomo in the first trailer for &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="793" width="1057" msid="96011711" hostid="261" sizebytes="11776"></div><p>Cast member Patrick Schwarzenegger described the series as "'Euphoria' meets superheroes" in an interview with <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/patrick-schwarzenegger-the-staircase/id1142302785?i=1000566354308" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Marc Malkin's "Just for Variety" podcast.</a></p><p>Kripke told <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/features/the-boys-spinoff-release-date-season-4-mcu-1235306102/">Variety</a> that the comparison is accurate to a degree.</p><p>"It's about kids who are complicated psychologically getting into trouble," he said. "So in that way, it's like 'Euphoria.' I don't know if it's quite as dark, frankly, as 'Euphoria.'"</p><p>"I think it will be surprising, the amount of emotion that is in that story, with all the usual 'Boys<em>' </em>swagger," Kripke told <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/07/the-boys-creator-eric-kripke-emmy-noms-season-3-spinoff-amazon-prime-video-1234791974/">Deadline</a> in July 2021.</p><h2>The cast will include rising actors, like 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' star <keyword id="12198339" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jaz-sinclair" source="Orion">Jaz Sinclair</keyword></h2><div type="image" title="Jaz Sinclair as Marie in the first trailer for &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="792" width="1057" msid="96011712" hostid="261" sizebytes="16010"></div><p>Sinclair, who portrayed Roz in "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/chilling-adventures-of-sabrina">CAOS</a>," was <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/the-boys-spinoff-amazon-lizze-broadway-1234928426/">one of the first cast members announced</a> along with "The Rookie" actress Lizze Broadway. Sinclair and Broadway will star as supes named Marie and Emma, respectively. "Teenage Bounty Hunters" star <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/the-boys-spinoff-adds-three-cast-1234934919/">Maddie Phillips</a> will also play a supe. </p><p>The cast has <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/03/aimee-carrero-shane-paul-mcghie-exit-the-boys-spinoff-carrero-joins-the-consultant-prime-video-1234975461/">undergone some changes </a><a href="https://deadline.com/2022/04/reina-hardesty-exit-the-boys-spinoff-series-1235009714/">in the lineup</a><a href="https://deadline.com/2022/03/aimee-carrero-shane-paul-mcghie-exit-the-boys-spinoff-carrero-joins-the-consultant-prime-video-1234975461/"></a> since initial reports, with new actors being added to the series.  </p><p>"CAOS" alum Chace Perdomo <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/03/chance-perdomo-the-boys-spinoff-recasting-1234980324/">replaced</a> Shane Paul McGhie in March 2022 following his departure. </p><p>In May 2022, <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/05/london-thor-the-boys-spinoff-derek-luh-asa-germann-shelley-conn-1235020015/">Deadline</a> reported additional castings: London Thor ("Shameless"), Derek Luh ("Shining Vale"), Shelley Conn ("Bridgerton"), and Asa Germann.</p><p>Patrick Schwarzenegger ("The Staircase") as <a href="https://variety.com/2022/streaming/columns/the-staircase-patrick-schwarzenegger-the-boys-spinoff-1235292860/">Golden Boy</a>, Sean Patrick Thomas ("The Tragedy of Macbeth"), and Marco Pigossi ("Invisible City") <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/05/patrick-schwarzenegger-sean-patrick-thomas-marco-pigossi-the-boys-spinoff-1235021404/">joined the cast</a> shortly after. </p><h2>Season 3 of 'The Boys' included Easter eggs teasing the spin-off </h2><div type="image" title="An arrow pointing to a computer screen in season three, episode two of &quot;The Boys.&quot;" height="1166" width="2878" msid="92837938" hostid="261"></div><p>When Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) visited the Red River Institute in episode two, he looked at a computer screen showing supe kids who are part of the group home. A photo of Sinclair's character, 17-year-old Marie M. could be seen briefly as Hughie scrolled. </p><p>Another, less obvious, nod to the upcoming spin-off was included in episode five. During a conversation with A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), the supe named Blue Hawk (Nick Wechsler) said they both trained with Coach Brink and were taught to "dominate totally."</p><p>Kripke confirmed to <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/features/the-boys-spinoff-release-date-season-4-mcu-1235306102/">Variety</a> that that was a nod to the spin-off.</p><p>"Both of those guys graduated from Good Oak, which is the name of the school, and Brink is a reference to the big superhero trainer at that school who is a character in the spinoff," he said. </p><h2>There will be crossover between 'The Boys' and the spin-off</h2><div type="image" title="From left: Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, and Laz Alonso for season three of &quot;The Boys.&quot;" height="1592" width="2123" msid="92837941" hostid="261"></div><p>Prior to the unveiling of the show's official name, the spin-off title was referred to as "Varsity."</p><p>"There's definitely crossover, and we're doing our best to design a universe that sees some of the issues and storylines in season three [of 'The Boys'] hand off to the first season in 'Varsity,'" Kripke told <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/07/the-boys-spoilers-season-3-donald-trump-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-eric-kripke-interiew-black-noir-1235060686/">Deadline</a>.</p><p>He continued: "There's a presidential campaign happening in the background of that season, and there are certain things that are happening at that school that are both in reaction to season three of 'The Boys.' There's Soldier Boy, et cetera, but also some new storylines that are happening in that season of the spin-off that we have to pick up and take into season four of the show."</p><p>Kripke also told <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-features/boys-penis-homelander-trump-billy-joel-season-3-1369258/">Rolling Stone</a> that familiar faces from 'The Boys" will pop up in the spin-off. </p><p>"Without spoiling anything, I think there will be several very, very cool cameos," he teased, "because it's a Vought-run college, so crossover with Vought characters is inevitable, really."</p><h2>The title, 'Gen V,' was announced in July 2022</h2><div type="image" title="Lizze Broadway as Emma in the first trailer for &quot;Gen V.&quot;" height="788" width="1054" msid="96011713" hostid="261" sizebytes="37068"></div><p>The official Twitter account for "The Boys" posted a <a href="https://twitter.com/TheBoysTV/status/1547959303872491520">video</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/TheBoysTV/status/1547991771187068932">photos</a> introducing followers to the cast of the spin-off.</p><p>"It's got everything 'The Boys' has: the intensity, the grit, the humor," Germann said<em>.</em></p><p>"It's fucked up. You're gonna like it," Perdomo added.</p><h2>'Gen V' will debut sometime in 2023</h2><p>In July 2022, Kripke told <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/features/the-boys-spinoff-release-date-season-4-mcu-1235306102/">Variety</a> that the spin-off was "almost halfway through shooting." The rollout plan for the show is for episodes to be released when "The Boys" isn't currently airing. </p><p>"I think the overall goal is to start leapfrogging them, where, a series of months after 'The Boys' wraps, season one of the spin-off will drop," Kripke told the publication. "And then a series of months after that, season four of 'The Boys' will drop."</p><p>The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDyDg04x1W0">first trailer</a> for "Gen V" dropped in December 2022 at Comic-Con Experience (CCXP) in São Paulo, Brazil, confirming the show's release in 2023 and teasing guest appearances from cast members of "The Boys."</p><p>The official synopsis reads: "Welcome to Godolkin University, a safe space for you to thrive. This is your first look at 'Gen V,' 'The Boys' college spin-off series arriving on Prime Video in 2023. Starring Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Shelley Conn, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sean Patrick Thomas, Marco Pigossi, Clancy Brown, Alexander Calvert, and Jason Ritter. Also featuring guest appearances from Jessie T. Usher, Colby Minifie, and P.J. Byrne reprising their roles from 'The Boys.'"</p>
