Okea Eme-Akwari ("Cobra Kai") is <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-who-is-the-masked-man">playing the masked man teased on the season 10 finale</a>.</li><li>Jeffrey Dean Morgan's wife, Hilarie Burton, also joins the cast to play his onscreen wife, Lucille.</li></ul><p>"<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/the-walking-dead">The Walking Dead</a>" season 10 is getting six bonus episodes next year. </p><p>Showrunner Angela Kang announced at San Diego Comic-Con summer 2020 that the series will get six "extra" episodes in season 10.</p><p>"We will not be airing season 11 episodes this year as we normally would in October, but we're excited to announce an extended season 10 and there will be six extra episodes to follow the finale," said Kang. </p><p>Thursday, AMC announced the extra episodes will debut on AMC starting Sunday, February 28, 2021 at 9 p.m. If you subscribe to the network's streaming service, <a href="https://www.amcplus.com/">AMC+</a>, you'll be able to watch new episodes weekly starting on Thursdays.</p><p>The six new episodes bring the season 10 count to 22. (Typically, the show's seasons run for 16 episodes.)</p><div type="image" title="angela kang season 11" height="1526" width="2822" msid="77161008" hostid="261"></div><p>What does that mean? Will we get a shorter episode run for season 11? No. </p><p>An AMC representative confirmed to Insider these new live-action episodes will have no impact on the episode count for season 11. These additional episodes will simply extend season 10.</p><p>In early September, AMC announced "TWD" will end after its 11th season <a href="https://www.insider.com/when-will-the-walking-dead-end-final-season">with an extended season comprised of 24 episodes</a>. An AMC representative clarified to Insider the decision to end the series in its 11th season was made after the decision to expand season 10.</p><p>During the <keyword id="1745653" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="sdcc">SDCC</keyword> "TWD" panel, Kang said the writer's room was working remotely on season 11 for the past few months. These new additional season 10 episodes will be a way to keep fans fed as they await the show's return.</p><h2><strong>These new episodes will be character-driven stories.</strong></h2><p>Series writer Kevin Deiboldt described them to us as "in-between-quels." </p><p>What does that mean? It means you can expect to see more isolated, character-driven stories. </p><p>"In order to film safely, we've had to think really deeply about what we can accomplish at this point in a way that is hopefully still really creatively satisfying," said Kang of filming the bonus episodes during the ongoing pandemic.</p><p>"It doesn't have 300 zombie extras in a scene breathing on all of our actors," Kang said. "It's been a really interesting and fun creative challenge for us on the writing side to try to do some deep dives into some of our characters." </p><p>"These six episodes were in many ways written with producibility in mind in the times that we're in," "TWD" universe chief content officer Scott Gimple told Insider. "They were conceived as great stories, but they kept in mind that the safest way to do it. And what I find fascinating is with those constraints, these are six of like the best scripts we've done."</p><p>Kang said these will not be six random episodes. As we understand it, the six episodes will serve as a bridge to season 11 while filling in some other gaps along the way.</p><p>"There are things that are going on with our people and their communities and so there are things that start to tie those into what will become the major story in season 11," Kang added. </p><h2><strong>Who will appear in these six </strong><strong>bonus </strong><strong>episodes? What is this new <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-who-are-commonwealth-soldiers">mysterious group</a> that was teased on the season 10 finale? Kang told Insider, we'll learn more about both.</p><p>"We'll learn more about Maggie's adventures," Kang said. "There's some other things that we're doing deep dives into like Daryl and Carol and Negan, Gabriel, and Aaron has some really cool stuff." </p><p>"We'll see other characters in there ...  and we'll check back in with that group, with the Commonwealth," Kang said of the <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-who-are-commonwealth-soldiers">new group teased at the very end of the season 10 finale</a>. Negan reflects on the events that led him to this point and comes to a conclusion about his future.</p><h2>Kang previously teased we may see an adaptation of the "TWD" spinoff comic series about Negan.</h2><div type="image" title="twd 1005 negan" height="2000" width="3000" msid="79031487" hostid="261"></div><p>During the NYCC virtual panel, Kang answered fan questions in a live chat and said, "Here's Negan fans will be happy soon."</p><p>Released in 2016, "Here's Negan!" provides Negan's full backstory. Until now, we've heard Negan hint at his relationship with his wife, Lucille, who died from cancer. </p><p>Are we going to get a massive flashback? It sure sounds that way. </p><p>Comicbook.com's Brandon Davis first reported that Hilarie Burton ("One Tree Hill") will <a href="https://comicbook.com/thewalkingdead/news/the-walking-dead-hilarie-burton-negan-lucille-cast/">join "TWD" as Negan's wife, Lucille</a>. That's pretty perfect when you know <a href="https://people.com/tv/hilarie-burton-why-she-married-jeffrey-dean-morgan/">Burton and Morgan were married in 2019</a> after being together for a decade.</p><div type="image" title="hilarie burton jeffrey dean morgan twd 2019" height="1433" width="1910" msid="79031488" hostid="261"></div><p>"Been pretty hard to keep this a secret," Burton <a href="https://twitter.com/HilarieBurton/status/1323692851725803521">tweeted</a>. "But I love working with @JDMorgan. I love watching him become #Negan an take on that swagger. And I love @TheWalkingDead family. They've been a part of our family for ages and I'm so grateful for their kindness."</p><p>The character-centric deep dive likely provides the perfect story that would be easier to film during the pandemic. It also helps that Burton and Morgan have been quarantining together on their farm with their two children.</p><h2>Connie will not be back on the show until season 11.</h2><div type="image" title="twd 1016 connie alive" height="2000" width="3000" msid="78524934" hostid="261"></div><p>The final minutes of the finale showed fan-favorite Connie (Lauren Ridloff) alive. Where has she been all season and will she make it back to our group now that Virgil (Kevin Carroll) has found her?</p><p>We'll have to wait a while to see her again.</p><p>When asked if Connie may be in one of the bonus six episodes, Kang said, "She's not, but we have a big episode planned for her." </p><p>Kang added, that it's not because they didn't want to have her there. </p><p>"At the time that we had to lock these episodes, her schedule was still up in the air," Kang continued. "We have an episode that should be really cool for people coming up afterwards. We're working on that for her."</p><h2><strong>How they filmed these episodes during the pandemic.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="twd 1016 commonwealth eugene" height="3000" width="4500" msid="79031490" hostid="261"></div><p>When we spoke with Kang back in September, the crew was in pre-production, preparing to safely film.</p><p>During <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aPDD_L8C6I">an October 2 appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live,"</a> Lauren Cohan said and costar Norman Reedus were in quarantine waiting to start filming. </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChtNc6SLHR0&amp;t=1st=1s">During a separate appearance on Kimmel</a>, Reedus, who was in Los Angeles for the majority of the pandemic, spoke a bit about the protocols and precautions they're taking on set, saying, "We have to take COVID tests three times a week. We have epidemiologist from the Pentagon during the SARS scare [as] our onset doctor now."</p><p>Reedus added that it's weird to be back filming in Georgia during the fall since they're usually filming the series during some of the hottest months of the year.</p><p>During NYCC's panel, Kang said it took production a few months to get everything up and running to film safely. </p><p>"Everybody will have masks and face shields and they've done the trailers differently," Kang said. "There's sanitation stations everywhere. There's UV lights and air scrubbers and things on the stages. There's a former military infectious diseases specialist who's our health and safety supervisor."</p><p>"It's an abundance of caution in every way," Kang added. "We've had to think a lot about, 'How do we tell the story so they're satisfying and dive into character and give a little bit of adventure, but being really creative about how many people we can have in a scene. How can we show things while keeping people a little bit distant wherever we can? It's forced us to really think outside of the box because we've really had a box around us in terms of how to do it safely."</p><p>Until the flagship show returns, you'll have to settle for the rest of "TWD" universe. 'The Walking Dead' will air 6 bonus episodes starting February 2021. Here's everything we know.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="281051" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Spy-Kids">Spy Kids</keyword>" director <keyword id="6393073" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Robert-Rodriguez">Robert Rodriguez</keyword> fought to make the family in the <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword> Latino.</li><li>He remembered it as a huge victory during a San Diego Comic-Con panel with Collider.</li><li>Rodriguez said he had to explain how the family was American to the studio after they asked him why he just couldn't make the film centered around "Americans." </li><li>The studio was concerned a Latino family may limit their audience potential.</li><li>Rodriguez finally convinced them by asking if James Bond only appealed to British fans.</li></ul><p>"Spy Kids" could have looked a lot different if director Robert Rodriguez didn't fight for his vision.</p><p>Rodriguez recalled his greatest victory in Hollywood during a virtual San Diego Comic-Con panel <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4y69aamh0H0">with Collider's editor in chief Steven Weintraub</a>. </p><p>"The studio was like, 'Why are you making them Latin, though? Why don't you just make them American?'" said Rodriguez. "And, I was like, they are American. It's based on my family." </p><p>The 2001 action movie follows Carmen and Juni who learn their parents, played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino, are spies. The two set out to save them after they're kidnapped. The film was released by Dimension Films, founded by Bob Weinstein.</p><p>Banderas' character, Gregorio Cortez, is based on Rodriguez's uncle, also named Gregorio, who was an FBI agent. A bunch of the characters are named after family members, including the two children and their uncle Felix. </p><p><div type="image" title="Spy Kids" height="1200" width="1600" msid="77155751" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Rodriguez said growing up in a family of 10 children, he wanted to make a movie about his family. He thought turning the family into spies would make it a more interesting watch. But Rodriguez said the studio questioned whether or not a Latino cast would make the potential audience for the film more niche. </p><p>"[If] you're doing something new, you're going to get questioned and you have to have a good answer. They're not being d---s or anything, they just [had] never seen it before," said Rodriguez. </p><p>"I said, 'No, I don't think so,'" he continued, while again, pointing out that his Latino family was also American. </p><p>That still didn't convince the studio. </p><p>What sealed the deal? James Bond.</p><p>"I finally had to come up with a good argument. Finally I said, 'OK. You don't have to be British to enjoy James Bond," said Rodriguez. "By being so specific, it becomes more universal. So they went with it."</p><p><div type="image" title="robert rodriguez" height="1554" width="2446" msid="77155760" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"Spy Kids" was a hit, leading to three sequels and an animated reboot series on Netflix. Since its release, Rodriguez said friends have shared how empowering it is for their kids to see his last name roll over the credits, realizing the film was made by someone in the Hispanic and Latino communities. That feedback inspired Rodriguez to work on a "Sharkboy and Lava Girl" live-action sequel for Netflix centered around children who join forces to save their parents from aliens.</p><p>"You kind of had to put the flag in and set it in and say this is how it's going to be done to make any change because there were no roles being written for Latins at that time back in 1999, nor were they being cast," said Rodriguez of standing his ground. "If I wasn't Latin I would have given up the fight because I would have went, 'OK I just want to get the movie made.'"</p><p>Rodriguez said he stuck with it because the story was based on his family and concluded that things will never change in Hollywood if conversations like this don't happen. Fans will finally learn 'The Walking Dead' season 10 finale air date at San Diego Comic-Con

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11972284" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lupita-nyongo" source="Orion">Lupita Nyong'o</keyword> said that filming "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was "very therapeutic."</li><li>She told The Hollywood Reporter she was still processing <keyword id="11972282" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="chadwick-boseman" source="Orion">Chadwick Boseman</keyword>'s death while filming.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/black-panther-wakanda-forever-teaser-breakdown-details-you-missed-2022-7#the-teaser-trailer-confirms-that-king-tchallablack-panther-has-died-1">"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever"</a> star Lupita Nyong'o said that making the upcoming Marvel movie helped her process the death of Chadwick Boseman.</p><p>Boseman, who played the titular character in the first "Black Panther" movie, <a href="https://www.insider.com/chadwick-boseman-world-mourns-death-of-black-panther-star-2020-8">died of cancer in 2020 at the age of 43.</a> The news came as a shock to many as he had kept his diagnosis a secret from the public.</p><p>After appearing on the Marvel Cinematic Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Nyong'o spoke to <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/lupita-nyongo-black-panther-wakanda-forever-chadwick-boseman-1235185510/">The Hollywood Reporter</a> on Sunday about filming the sequel without Boseman.</p><p>"It's been a doozy of a few years for everybody," Nyong'o said. "For us as a cast, having lost our king, Chadwick Boseman, that was a lot to process, and in many ways, we're still processing it. When you lose someone, I don't know when you stop missing them. And of course, we felt it so much, making this film without him."</p><p>Nyong'o is not the only one to comment on Boseman's absence.</p><p>Angela Bassett, who plays Ramonda, the mother of Boseman's character, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/sep/07/angela-bassett-on-success-salaries-and-staying-power-i-gotta-find-a-new-queen-to-play">told the Guardian last year</a> that the cast and crew "all came together and just paid homage" to Boseman before they began filming on the first week.</p><p>Martin Freeman. who plays CIA agent Everett Ross, <a href="https://www.insider.com/martin-freeman-black-panther-2-without-chadwick-boseman-was-sad-2022-5">also said to Collider earlier this year that it was "strange and sad" filming the sequel without Boseman.</a></p><div type="image" title="A mural of T'Challa in the first teaser trailer for &quot;Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.&quot;" height="1191" width="1589" msid="93114264" hostid="261" sizebytes="54102"></div><p>Nyong'o also noted to THR the difficulty of making the film during the coronavirus pandemic.</p><p>"To make this film against all odds is a powerful statement unto itself, and I am very proud that we did it," the Nakia actress said. It's gonna blow people's minds, and I just cannot wait until it's not a secret anymore."</p><p>During the SDCC panel on Saturday, Marvel dropped the <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-panther-2-wakanda-forever-trailer-2022-7">first teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel.</a></p><p>The trailer seemingly confirms that Boseman's character, T'Challa, will <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-panther-wakanda-forever-what-we-know-details-2021-6">die in the movie instead of being recast</a>.</p><p>Multiple shots show a funeral procession and there is also a mural of T'Challa, similar to the one of Iron Man "Spider-Man: Far From Home."</p><p>At the end of the trailer, a mysterious figure is seen wearing the iconic Black Panther suit, but it is unclear whether this is hinting at another character taking over the role of protector of Wakanda.</p><p><em><a href="https://www.insider.com/category/black-panther-wakanda-forever">"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever"</a> premieres in theaters on November 11.</em></p>

Lupita Nyong'o says shooting 'Wakanda Forever' was 'very therapeutic' after losing Chadwick Boseman

Instead of allowing Sebastian Milton to survive the series as he does in the comic, Sunday's episode of the apocalyptic thriller surprisingly killed off the TV version of Sebastian (Teo Rapp-Olsson).</p><p>On season 11, episode 18, the Commonwealth turned on Sebastian after a recording revealed just how little he cared for the community he's supposed to lead one day. As the people started to turn on Sebastian, and his mother, the leader of the Commonwealth, a group of the dead entered the community.</p><p>During the chaos, Sebastian slyly thought he could get revenge on Max (Margot Bingham) by slinging one of the undead onto her. Unlucky for him, her boyfriend Eugene (Josh McDermitt) came to her rescue and shoved the zombie onto Sebastian, sending him to the ground in terror. </p><div type="image" title="TWD 1118 Max and Sebastian" height="1590" width="1200" msid="94749624" hostid="261" sizebytes="127362"></div><p>As Sebastian wrestled with the walker, bystanders ignored his cries for help. Instead, onlookers watched as the zombie got the better of Governor Milton's spoiled son, biting him in the neck and terrorizing him until Judith shot the walker dead. </p><p>Sebastian's death on the show not only delivered a satisfying payoff for show viewers, but also helped course-correct a controversial moment for comic readers. </p><h2><strong>What happens in the comic: Sebastian kills Rick Grimes</strong></h2><p>Sebastian's death is especially surprising because he gets a very important role in the comics. Not only does he survive the series' run, but he also <a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-comic-kills-rick-grimes-2019-6">shockingly kills its protagonist, Rick Grimes</a>, in a controversial moment.</p><p>At the end of 2019's issue No. 191, Sebastian barges into Rick's bedroom and shoots him as he sits in bed defenseless, trying — and failing — to talk Sebastian out of shooting him.</p><div type="image" title="TWD 191 sebastian and Rick confrontation" height="635" width="1536" msid="94749626" hostid="261" sizebytes="70376"></div>In the comics, Sebastian's upset that Rick has become so popular in the Commonwealth community that he may take his family out of power. Out of fear, Sebastian thinks the only way to prevent that from happening is to kill Rick. The gun fires, shooting Rick in the chest. Rick asks him what he's done and the issue ends. <p>In the following issue, Sebastian, seemingly in a panic, shoots Rick dead a few more times and then leaves, letting him bleed out on his bed. Rick barely got in any words with Sebastian.</p><p>The death came as a huge shock to comic-book readers. No one expected Rick to be murdered in his bed one night after everything he survived. After killing Rick, the bigger surprise was that Kirkman abruptly ended the entire comic two months later with issue No. 193.</p><p>Kirkman later said he wanted to end the comic <a href="https://www.cbr.com/walking-dead-robert-kirkman-regrets-fake-covers-solicits/">as if it was one of the series' many unexpected and shocking deaths</a>. At the time, no one saw it coming because Kirkman's "TWD" collaborator and artist Charlie Adlard <a href="https://www.cbr.com/fake-walking-dead-comic-covers/">produced three fake covers promoting the continuation of the comic for months to come</a>.</p><h2><strong>A large improvement from the comic</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="TWD 1118 Sebastian death" height="3002" width="4500" msid="94749629" hostid="261" sizebytes="669956"></div><p>Though "TWD" comic creator Robert Kirkman said he had <a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-comic-kills-rick-grimes-2019-6">been working toward Rick's death for years</a>, the way in which it was executed felt random, lazy, and an incredibly disrespectful way to kill the series' protagonist.</p><p>Shot at close range by a cowardly, spoiled child?</p><p>That didn't sound like a death befitting of Rick Grimes, who, in the comics, was a man who survived having his arm cut off and separate wars with Negan and the Whisperers. Rick's death always felt lame and unearned, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-ross-marquand-rick-comic-death-lame-2022-10">a sentiment that "TWD" star Ross Marquand, who plays Aaron, shared</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Rick's comic death" height="968" width="1288" msid="94749631" hostid="261" sizebytes="50944"></div>With other series in the works at that point, it felt like Kirkman had moved past or checked out of "TWD" and was more focused on his other comic endeavors and adaptations. Though sad, it was tough to blame him.<p>In 2017, Kirkman and other "TWD" producers <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/14/business/media/walking-dead-lawsuit.html">sued AMC over profit shares for the series</a>, claiming they were owed a "significant amount of money" for how popular the show became. Ahead of the lawsuit, Kirkman left AMC Studios and <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/walking-dead-creator-moves-amc-amazon-big-deal-1028773/">signed a two-year deal with Amazon</a> where he has since released an adaptation of his comic "Invincible," which has included the voices of many "TWD" stars.</p><p>The Commonwealth story, the final arc of the "TWD" comic, kicked off at the top of 2018 and has been <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/TWD/comments/fru4tf/anyone_else_have_a_feeling_commonwealth_arc_will/">criticized by fans</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/KirstenAcuna/status/1426061858528587777">including myself</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/BoYoungGeo/status/1312073401952071683">for being</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/RobertPorubsky/status/1312950351184777218">boring</a>.   </p><p>If you were familiar with the legal battle going on behind the scenes between Kirkman and AMC, it felt like the drawn-out proceedings (a judge <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/walking-dead-producers-lawsuit-amc-profits-1235226991/">ruled in favor of the network</a> in 2022) were bleeding into the comic's quality.<strong> </strong></p><p>At 2022's San Diego Comic-Con, executive producer Greg Nicotero suggested that by the time the comic ended in 2019, they weren't in constant communication with Kirkman anymore. Nicotero told Insider during SDCC's press conference that they were all caught off-guard by the comic's abrupt ending.</p><p>"We didn't even know the comic was ending," Nicotero told Insider in response to a question about the show ending. "I think we were on set one day going, 'Oh, it's done. That's how they ended it.'"</p><p>During the same conference, "TWD" chief content officer Scott M. Gimple said they were going off of the assumption that the show was going to continue for a while. It's possible that those working on the show thought that they'd have material to adapt for years to come before the comic came to a close in three issues with Rick's death. After all, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-season-12-beyond-plans-discussed-2022-2">seasons 12 and beyond of the show were being discussed</a> before AMC decided to end "TWD" in 2020 with the current 11th season.</p><p>The show has made many deviations from the comic over the years. The Sebastian one is one of the best. </p><p>Not only does Sebastian's show death provide a cathartic release for comic fans who may have been frustrated with Rick's abrupt comic death, but the show also treats Sebastian as more than a one-dimensional menace.</p><p>Unlike the comics, the show provides more depth as to why Sebastian comes off as such an abrasive, spoiled brat. </p><div type="image" title="TWD 1118 Sebastian discusses brother" height="1200" width="1200" msid="94749635" hostid="261" sizebytes="73858"></div><p>In separate interviews with Insider, both Laila Robins and Teo Rapp-Olsson, who play mother and son Pamela and Sebastian Milton, told us they came up with additional backstory for their characters to get to the heart of why Sebastian is so pretentious and unlikeable.</p><p>On the show, Sebastian has an older, perfect brother whose shadow looms large after an untimely death.</p><p>"We were trying to figure out why I'm particularly so disappointed in Sebastian and it's partly because I think that we decided — why not have a previous son that was really the golden child who was supposed to sort of carry on the legacy," <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-sebastian-death-reactions-2022-10">Robins told Insider</a> of Sebastian's nameless brother who is briefly referenced on season 11, episode 18. </p><p>The addition makes you feel an iota of compassion toward Sebastian. His frustration is extremely relatable for anyone who has ever had a parent compare them to their siblings.</p><h2><strong>Could Rick's death still happen? Maybe.</strong></h2><p>When Sebastian joined AMC's "TWD," comic fans feared that someone else may receive Rick's comic death. Aaron was a prime candidate. </p><p>At this point of the show, Aaron closely resembles comic-book Rick down to his facial hair and missing arm. </p><div type="image" title="Aaron vs Rick TWD" height="600" width="1200" msid="94749638" hostid="261" sizebytes="103176"></div><p>Even Rapp-Olsson told Insider he imagined his character may kill off Aaron, given their similarities in appearance, or someone else big like Ezekiel (Khary Payton).</p><p>Now that Sebastian's gone, it appears a version of Rick's comic death is off the table unless the show decides to make someone else in the Commonwealth the perpetrator of a murder.</p><p>Governor Pamela Milton could certainly have an adverse reaction to her son's death and go after Eugene and Max. The teaser for next week's episode makes it look like she wants someone to pay for Sebastian's death and Daryl is seen trying to smuggle Eugene out of the Commonwealth.</p><p>Similarly, we've already seen Pamela's right-hand man Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton) descend into madness in a way his comic counterpart doesn't. Lance looks like the sort of guy who would easily murder someone defenseless in their own bed.</p><p>With only six episodes remaining, we doubt Sebastian's death will be the last. We already <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-characters-most-likely-to-die-2022-8">rounded up the characters we believed were most likely to get the ax</a>. 'The Walking Dead' surprises fans with a huge twist from a controversial moment in the comics

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are mild spoilers ahead for the next two episodes of "The Walking Dead."</li><li>The best moment of review screeners comes in the final minutes of season 11, episode 18.</li></ul><p>If you were frustrated with the way <a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-comic-kills-rick-grimes-2019-6">Rick was killed</a> in "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/the-walking-dead">The Walking Dead</a>" comics — shot defenseless and in bed by the Commonwealth leader's spoiled son, Sebastian Milton — then the next two episodes of the show are for you. </p><p>I've screened "Lockdown" (season 11, episode 17) and "A New Deal" (season 11, episode 18), the start of the apocalyptic drama's final eight episodes debuting on AMC and AMC+ on October 2, and while there's plenty to enjoy, there's at least one infuriating oversight.</p><p>When we last left the show, Max (Margot Bingham), Eugene (Josh McDermitt), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), and more at the Commonwealth helped Connie (Lauren Ridloff) gather enough evidence to publish a scathing article in which she accused the governor's son, Sebastian (Teo Rapp-Olsson), of being connected to a growing number of missing people in the community and at least one death.</p><p>Simultaneously, Daryl (Norman Reedus), Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), Aaron (Ross Marquand), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and more are in the crosshairs of the Commonwealth governor's right-hand man, Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton), who has gone rogue with some of the community's militia.</p><p>After Daryl blindly shot at Lance, leaving him with a sizable face scar, Lance took the survivors' communities by force. Now, Alexandria, the Hilltop, and Oceanside are under the control of the Commonwealth and Lance is out for blood.</p><p>We enter as the fallout from Connie's article and Lance's hunt for Daryl's group start to converge. Naturally, those aren't the only stories going on in the final eight episodes. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7h11cC6di4">July's San Diego Comic-Con trailer</a> teased the threat of a smarter breed of zombie lurking, as well, which don't appear in the episodes I screened.</p><p>Does it all become a bit much for the final block of episodes? Not yet, but with six episodes remaining to be screened, I'm concerned if the show will be able to neatly conclude these storylines or become burdened by setting up its many spinoffs.</p><h2><strong>A big change from the comics is the highlight of the first 2 episodes</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Carol's back in the kitchen TWD 11c" height="3001" width="4500" msid="94500211" hostid="261" sizebytes="2002866"></div><p>The October 2 premiere is fine.</p><p>You get zombie action, a rare car chase, and it ends on a nice cliffhanger. We get to spend time with a majority of the survivors and even get a few sentimental moments between some longtime characters. Carol fans will be happy to see plenty of screen time with Melissa McBride, one of the few remaining actors from the show's first season. </p><p>Best of all, the premiere finally delivers a few scenes with fan-favorite Jerry (Cooper Andrews) who hasn't had much time to shine at all in the show's final season.</p><div type="image" title="TWD 11C Jerry" height="1516" width="2828" msid="94500213" hostid="261" sizebytes="65238"></div><p>But of all the actors, Hamilton continues a tour-de-force performance as the Commonwealth's power-hungry social climber, Lance Hornsby. </p><p>You have to give "TWD" its due for casting some phenomenal villains in its final seasons. Physically scarred and suffering from a very bruised ego, Hornsby's on a warpath and I'm worried for anyone who's on the wrong end of his wrath moving forward. This man has nothing left to lose and, in the zombie apocalypse, that's someone who is usually willing to take anyone down with him.</p><div type="image" title="TWD 1115 Lance Hornsby" height="3000" width="4500" msid="94500214" hostid="261" sizebytes="559666"></div><p>Otherwise, the premiere is strongest during two separate first-time interactions that I won't spoil here since they're such a delight to see on screen. One of the two is teased <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7h11cC6di4">in the Comic-Con trailer</a>.</p><p>The second episode, also debuting on AMC+ on October 2 and on TV a week later, is superior to the first. Though it lags in places, it makes up for it with a twist on a moment from the comics that should more than satisfy fans who were let down by Kirkman's series <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-comic-ends-2019-7">when it abruptly ended in 2019</a>. </p><p>That's been a core strength of the series. In recent years, "TWD" has excelled in improving upon the comic by more thoroughly <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-who-is-beta-2020-3">exploring the Whisperers</a> and adding <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-dante-whisperer-siddiq-2019-11">unexpected twists</a>. Here, the Commonwealth storyline is better utilized to deliver commentary on the disparity between social classes in America. </p><p>Additionally, make sure to not skip past the title sequence. The familiar "TWD'' score running over the opening credits has been slightly expanded to include a few new animated sequences. 10 actors have been added to the opening credits.</p><h2><strong>There's a slight time jump in the first 2 episodes that makes the premiere frustrating</strong></h2><div type="image" title="TWD 1116" height="1330" width="1200" msid="94500216" hostid="261" sizebytes="113998"></div><p>April's mid-season finale of "TWD" ended on a haunting cliffhanger, culminating in Lance lining up the Oceanside community at gunpoint. As Commonwealth soldiers awaited an order, Lance tossed his lucky coin in the air, caught it, and placed it matter-of-factly on his opposite hand. Before Lance could look at the coin, presumably to decide the group's fate, the screen cut to black. </p><p>For about six months, viewers have waited to learn the fate of the Oceanside group. If you're hoping for a resolution, you're not getting one, at least not in the next two episodes of "TWD" that I've screened. </p><p>Instead, the next episode of "TWD" frustratingly kicks off with Lance in a completely different location, hot on the trail of Daryl's group, as if the Oceanside lineup didn't happen.</p><p>Maybe Oceanside will be revisited in the episodes to come (there's a small mention of them in season 11, episode 18), but it's the first big sign in these final episodes that the show may have cut moments in order to make it across the finish line.</p><p>With that in mind, I'm fearful that certain stories will get skipped over and truncated in service of setting up the show's three future spinoffs featuring Daryl, Maggie, Negan, and the long-awaited return of Rick and Michonne.</p><h2><strong>Nostalgia feels a bit forced into the next two episodes. It's still difficult to see an end in sight to the series.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="TWD 11C Rick's gun Daryl" height="1554" width="2842" msid="94500217" hostid="261" sizebytes="57918"></div><p>These next two episodes of "TWD" don't feel like the start of the end. They simply feel like mid-season episodes. </p><p>The only thing that makes them feel remotely like the show's culmination is that both episodes start with narration and flashbacks to iconic scenes from throughout the show. I imagine that's how each of the final eight episodes will start. </p><p>But does it work?</p><p>Other than making me slightly concerned for the character reciting the narration — who I won't spoil — it feels a bit shoehorned in, as if the episodes needed to remind fans that we're coming to the end of the zombie series which kicked off in 2010.</p><p>I can overlook the somewhat clunky narration since everyone, from the cast to the producers, was caught off guard when AMC <a href="https://www.insider.com/when-will-the-walking-dead-end-final-season">decided season 11 would be the show's last in 2020</a>. At the time, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-ross-marquand-interview-2022-2">future seasons were being discussed</a>. </p><p>It's evident that Kang, who was given the series during a tumultuous time anyway when Andrew Lincoln was departing the series, the writing team, and producers are trying to do what they can for fans to make these final episodes feel like they were always planned to be the final eight. </p><p>In July, executive producer Greg Nicotero told me that making this final season nearly killed them. In previous months, the cast relayed to me how tired they were after working a more demanding schedule to get the final season completed. Some, including Reedus and Morgan, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-norman-reedus-concussion-finale-2022-3">sustained</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/JDMorgan/status/1526642364839866369">injuries</a> and continued working. And it's because of that that I view the episodes with a slightly more forgiving eye. </p><div type="image" title="TWD 11c Ezekiel, Kelly, and the group" height="1440" width="2860" msid="94500218" hostid="261" sizebytes="90522"></div><p>If anything, I watch these episodes and it makes me a bit sad. Not only do I wonder what was originally in store for the series outside of a pandemic, but it's obvious the final episodes are not being given the same sendoff as AMC's Emmy-nominated and critically beloved "Better Call Saul."</p><p>Instead, much like the decaying walkers in the apocalypse, it feels like "TWD" is slowly marching towards its grave with little fanfare. Though appearing in person briefly for a fan party, the cast did very select interviews in July at San Diego Comic-Con and none of the series' biggest stars did much press <a href="https://ew.com/tv/walking-dead-final-season-on-set-cover-story/">outside of Entertainment Weekly</a> ahead of the final episodes.</p><p>It feels like AMC is already looking past "TWD" and is more focused on its three future spinoffs.</p><p>And that's depressing. </p><p>Two episodes into the series' final eight and I'm concerned about the show's ability to wrap up stories and set up new ones all while delivering a satisfying conclusion for longtime fans.</p><p>It doesn't help that the show is also adding smarter, faster zombies into the mix.</p><div type="image" title="Aaron, Ross Marquand TWD 11c" height="1468" width="2842" msid="94500219" hostid="261" sizebytes="27426"></div><p>At SDCC, Kang told a group of press, including Insider, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-will-address-season-1-smart-zombies-2022-8">this variant strain of the dead is a nod to some walkers from season one</a>, but it's clear there's also a connection to a zombie that was more recently seen on a spinoff. This smarter breed of the undead will likely be at the center of the upcoming Daryl spinoff, too.</p><p>While Kang and execs told me the series <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-walking-dead-will-address-season-1-smart-zombies-2022-8">will have a definitive end</a> and that the final episodes aren't simply a tool to set up spinoffs, it's difficult to not feel that could become the case.</p><p>I've long thought that "The Walking Dead" had the possibility of having a superior ending to the comic. </p><p>I hope it still does.</p><p>"The Walking Dead" returns for its run of final episodes on October 2.</p><p><em>You can <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/the-walking-dead">follow along with our show coverage here</a>.</em></p>

The return of 'The Walking Dead' mind-bogglingly ignores its own mid-season finale. The series may have too many loose ends to deliver a satisfying conclusion.

"I'm talking to Andrew Lincoln quite frequently."</p><p>"TWD" universe chief creative officer Scott Gimple Gimple first announced <a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-rick-grimes-movies-2018-11">a series of three "TWD" movies with Rick Grimes</a> after Lincoln's departure from the show in November 2018. Since then, we haven't heard much about the films.</p><p>In July 2019, we learned <keyword id="56745" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Universal">Universal</keyword> Studios <a href="https://www.insider.com/walking-dead-movie-teaser-trailer-2019-7">will release the first "Walking Dead" movie</a>.</p><p>Kirkman said he hasn't been very open about his work on the movies previously, but that he's been working with producer David Alpert, Gimple, Universal, and <keyword id="6358378" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="amc">AMC</keyword> to get the film "in shape."</p><p><div type="image" title="robert kirkman sdcc 2020" height="679" width="1258" msid="77161588" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"It's very important to us that these movies are spectacular," said Kirkman. "I think that to have Andrew Lincoln reprising his role as Rick Grimes is a very special thing and if we were to do these movies in any way that was in any way lackluster, I think would be a disservice to him, a disservice to the character of Rick Grimes, and a disservice to the fans."</p><p>"I've been very hands-on with shaping that story and making sure that things are on the up and up," he added, saying the combination of that and the pandemic are why we haven't heard much lately about the films. "We're all working very hard to bring you the best possible <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword>."</p><p>It's not just Kirkman who is involved in these films.</p><p>During a conversation with <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v=571111513585225&amp;ref=watch_permalinklink">Comicbook.com's Brandon Davis</a>, Gimple <a href="https://twitter.com/ComicBook/status/1286824738065510401">said that star Andrew Lincoln is very involved</a> in production process as well and that the pandemic has given them extra time to really work on nailing the story. </p><p>"So much of what we've been doing has been honing and tweaking and experimenting and we're just in the lab with it," said Gimple. "We're still in the lab. Andy is super involved. He throws around the football with the rest of us. He's very, very invested in this."</p><p>Gimple hinted that the Rick Grimes fans see on screen may not necessarily be the same man we remember. </p><p>"Rick has a history and the history will be present within him," said Gimple when asked if these movies will be accessible for new audiences as well as longtime fans of the franchise. "It will be a big part of who he is, but it's likely going to be a very different rick that we see as well."</p><p>"New audiences will be like, 'Oh, that's the guy I want to discover that past history," Gimple added. "We, who know it so well, are like, 'Oh crap. It became an instant hit for the network, concluding after eight seasons in March 2017. </p><p>Even though it's been years since the series ended, Dobrev and Wesley remain close friends. </p><p>Here's a complete timeline of their friendship.</p><h2>Dobrev and Wesley met during a chemistry read for 'TVD'</h2><div type="image" title="paul wesley nina dobrev january 2010" height="1900" width="2533" msid="81440631" hostid="261"></div><p>The early seasons of the series centered on a love triangle involving Elena Gilbert (Dobrev), Stefan Salvatore (Wesley), and Damon Salvatore (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/ian-somerhalder">Ian Somerhalder</a>). <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-vampire-diaries-fun-facts-things-to-know">Wesley was the last of the three stars to be cast</a>, after an extensive search for the right actor to play the brooding vampire. </p><p>"I showed up to the test and I'm not exaggerating, there were literally 15 guys there from everywhere from Australia to England to New York City," Wesley recalled during an interview with <a href="https://ew.com/tv/2019/09/09/the-vampire-diaries-pilot-oral-history/">Entertainment Weekly</a> in 2019.</p><p>Wesley stood out because he didn't give Dobrev the time of day. </p><p>"I remember that Paul was the only one who didn't speak to me unless we were speaking on camera," the actress told EW. "Everyone else was trying to schmooze with me and flirt with me because it's a chemistry read, and that was my first-ever chemistry read so I thought that's what it was supposed to be as well."</p><p>She continued, "I was trying to get a vibe: who did I have the most sexual tension with? And because Paul didn't speak to me, we had the least sexual tension."</p><p>For his part, Wesley said that he didn't acknowledge the <a href="https://www.insider.com/degrassi-the-next-generation-cast-where-are-they-now-2018-6">"Degrassi" alum</a> - even refusing to make eye contact with her. "It's the kind of thing where you can see it on screen and you get an energy from the room that I maybe didn't have a barometer on, but he was absolutely the right choice and the best person for the role."</p><p>"I couldn't imagine anyone else being Stefan and I'm so grateful that they chose him because now he's one of my closest friends and we have a friendship that will last forever - vampire pun intended," she added.</p><h2>September 10, 2009: 'TVD' premiered on The CW</h2><div type="image" title="the vampire diaries elena stefan 101 1" height="1452" width="1942" msid="81440635" hostid="261"></div><p>The show came during the peak of the vampire craze rebirth, with movies and shows like "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/twilight">Twilight</a>" and "True Blood" garnering global audiences.</p><p>The pilot drew 4.9 million viewers, <a href="https://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2010/01/vampire-diaries-star-nina-dobrev.html">setting a record for the largest series premiere debut</a> since The CW was founded in 2006.  </p><p>Dobrev and Wesley's characters began as love interests - abbreviated to Stelena.</p><p>But as the season progressed, Elena developed stronger feelings for Damon, the older of the Salvatore brothers.</p><p>She and Damon (known as Delena) shared several romantic moments, then she definitively picked him at the end of season four.
