<ul><li>As many as 63% of screenwriters surveyed said that they are not being paid fairly. </li><li>Only 31% writers are offered a hybrid pay model contract with a mix of fixed pay and incentive/bonus. </li><li>As many as 53% writers said that they are dissatisfied with the credit they receive for their work. </li></ul>Indian screenwriters might not be agitating like their US counterparts, but they are not in a happy position either. Things might have looked like they are changing with OTTs valuing story over the star (unlike films), but writers are yet to get their due — both in terms of pay and credit, says a report by Ormax and Tulsea. As many as 63% in the survey of writers believe they are not being paid fairly, even as 65% said that pay levels have improved in recent years. However, 47% are impacted by lack of timeliness in payments – which is a significant concern. A dominant majority of writers – 91% – believe that a hybrid pay model, consisting of a mix of fixed pay and incentive/bonus, will motivate them to do better work, and lead to higher ownership. However, only 31% have ever been offered a contract of this nature so far. The report ‘The Right Draft’ was conducted among 217 film and series writers in India across Hindi, English and four South Indian languages. “It is well understood that writers are pivotal to the creative process, especially in the era of streaming platforms and in the post-pandemic world, where the audience are more demanding of good stories than ever before. Yet, the writers have struggled to get their due," said Datta Dave, co-founder of Tulsea. It’s not just about money! As many as 53% writers said that they are dissatisfied with the credit they receive for their work. “The dissatisfaction with credit in marketing and promotions is even higher, touching 65-80% of different types of marketing activities,” the report said. However, the value of scripts and screenwriters is different across industries. As many as 90% writers believe theatrical business values stars over scripts, while the view is a lot more balanced for the OTT industry, though still tilted away from scripts and towards stars. A large section of writers believe that they do not have adequate access to mentoring, infrastructure, grievance redressal, and other such industry forms of support. Shailesh Kapoor, founder-CEO, Ormax Media said that the satisfaction levels of Indian writers with their role and place in the industry is an often-ignored topic. “We have always believed that measuring the quantum of a problem is the first step to finding solutions, and this report too aims to do the same, by creating conversations that are more data-led and objective,” he added. However, it also looks like most screenwriters do not intend to do just that. As many as 91% writers said they have considered becoming a director or a producer at some point of time. As many as 26% said that they already made this transition even as they continue to write. But few are going to higher jobs for money. As producers and directors, writers have more creative freedom on the product they create. Behind the scenes: 2 in 3 Indian screenwriters lament lack of pay incentives

<keyword id="12792045" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Future-Lifestyle" source="Orion">Future Lifestyle</keyword> Fashions Ltd has received a total claim of Rs 2,155.53 crore from 12 financial creditors in the <keyword id="5961445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="corporate-insolvency-resolution-process" source="Orion">corporate insolvency resolution process</keyword> (CIRP) initiated against this Future group company recently. The resolution professional of the company has provisionally admitted claims of Rs 2,117.03 crore and claims worth Rs 38.5 crore are "under verification", said the latest data shared by Future Lifestyle Fashions Ltd (<keyword id="1567510" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="flfl" source="Orion">FLFL</keyword>) on the exchanges. As per the provision of the Insolvency &amp; Bankruptcy Code, a Committee of Creditors (CoC) of FLFL has been formed and it will have its first meeting next week. "We wish to inform you that the first meeting of CoC of Future Lifestyle Fashions Limited (under CIRP) will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023," it said. On May 4, the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal(NCLT) had directed to initiate CIRP against FLFL, admitting a petition from Bank of India. This is the third company of the <keyword id="6361562" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kishore" source="Orion">Kishore</keyword> Biyani-led Future Group to be dragged into CIRP by its creditors for defaulting on loans. Its flagship firm <keyword id="1636009" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="future-retail-ltd" source="Orion">Future Retail Ltd</keyword> and logistics and infra arm Future Enterprises are already facing insolvency proceedings. FLFL was considering asset monetisation to pare its debts, however, it did not materialise. It had entered into a One Time Restructuring (OTR) Plan with lenders also. The company has in-house retail chains Central and Brand Factory, exclusive brand outlets (EBOs) and other multi-brand outlets (MBOs) of nearly a dozen apparel labels, including Lee Copper, Champion, aLL, Indigo Nation, Giovani, John Miller, Scullers, Converse and Urbana in its portfolio. According to the regulatory filing, State Bank of India leads the CoC of FLFL with 22.51 per cent voting share. It had an admitted loan of Rs 476.59 crore. It is followed by Centbank Financial Services Ltd, a debenture trustee, having 21.01 per cent voting share with admitted claims of Rs 444.76 crore. The petitioner Bank of India has a 19.71 per cent voting share with admitted claims of Rs 417.33 crore and Bank of Baroda has a 14.02 per cent voting share with an admission of Rs 296.79 crore of claims. FLFL was part of the 19 group companies operating in retail, wholesale, logistics and warehousing segments, which were supposed to be transferred to <keyword id="58448" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance-retail" source="Orion">Reliance Retail</keyword> as part of a Rs 24,713-crore deal announced in August 2020. The deal was called off by billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd in April. After that, Future Group companies had several defaults on payments. Future Lifestyle Insolvency: RP receives claims of ₹2,155.53 cr from financial creditors

However, the industry which has struggled since the Covid -19 hit, isn’t out of the woods yet, as per industry body Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). For starters, the reading is still below the pre-pandemic level. “While there has been a slight 2% decline compared to pre-Covid levels, the overall retail figures have shown improvement. The two-wheeler and commercial vehicles (CV) sales did continue to face some challenges, recording high-single-digit setbacks of 8% and 7% respectively,” said Manish Raj Singhania, president of FADA. Each sub-sector, be it two-wheelers or passenger vehicles, is expected to face a different set of challenges. Two-wheeler sales picked up in May as they grew 9% year-on-year, thanks to the wedding season and recovery in rural demand. Added to that, the changes in FAME which have taken effect from this month, also prompted higher electric 2-wheeler sales in May. The phase II of Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles (FAME) scheme commenced in 2019 for a period of three years, and extended till March 2024. The Heavy Industries Ministry notified in late May that it has reduced the subsidy provided under the scheme to electric two wheelers. After FAME subsidies were slashed, players like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/tvs-ather-ola-hike-prices-of-electric-two-wheelers-as-new-subsidy-norms-kick-in/articleshow/100679993.cms">TVS, Ather and Ola </a>increased prices. Though seasonal factors could boost demand for two wheelers in general, there will be concerns like weather-induced walk-in reductions, inventory, and regulatory norms, said FADA. Inventory worries Passenger vehicle sales grew 4% in May year-on-year, recovering from a slump seen in April. “Improved availability of vehicles, the strength of pending orders, and the robust demand for new launches drove a positive momentum,” said Singhania. Going ahead, the industry body expects the PV sector to see increased demand, particularly for new models, compact and full-sized sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and electric vehicles (EVs). But inventory pressure and right model availability could pose challenges, it added. Three wheelers are maintaining their good run as their sales went up by 79%, while tractor sales also went up almost 10% in May, compared to last year. Commercial vehicle sales also grew 7%. The commercial vehicle segment experienced sustained growth, underpinned by the government's focus on infrastructure development. The bus segment displayed a notable increase, driven by improved financing options and higher sales in academic institutions, FADA said. Going forward, however, the CV sector anticipates improved vehicle availability but concerns about real driver emission (RDE) norms and seasonal effects may impact sales. sales of EVs registered an impressive show in May, and accounted for 8% of total vehicle retail. A surge in two-wheeler sales is also one of the reasons, as 7% of total sales in this category were EVs. The best EV show, however, was from three wheelers as it accounted for 56% of total sales in this category. The CV and PV categories also marked their presence in the EV landscape, with respective contributions of 0.5% and 2.5%, FADA said. "It is an eye opener that way and our focus is mostly on the security and safety and protection of the child, which is an issue which is very close to my heart - always been," Bajpayee said about the movie in an interview. Affable lawyers with twisted minds Solanki’s character, based on a real-life model, brings forth the struggles of the legal system in India. But it’s not the only one, especially on OTT. Yet another celebrated actor, Pankaj Tripathi plays Madhav Mishra, an affable-yet-brilliant lawyer from Mumbai who investigates his cases closely in Criminal Justice on Hotstar. The genius underdog also takes up controversial cases like defending a drug-addict teenager accused of murdering his sister, a woman who murdered her husband, and also a cab driver accused of rape and murder of his client —- across three seasons. Tripathi says that his character is based on aam aadmi, who mixes humour with common sense. “His behaviour, mannerisms, sense of timing and body language all make him easy to understand and relate to. Legal dramas keep it real While the US has many legal dramas to boast be it the super-hit Suits, Boston Legal or The Good Wife and its spinoff, Indian screens have been a late entrant into this genre in spite of a brilliant start in the 80s with Ek Ruka Hua Faisla. The movie starring Pankaj Kapoor brings the story of the now-abandoned jury system in India, as they discuss the depths of a case where a young teen from a slum stabs his father. Later, in addition to a few movies with courtroom scenes, few full fledged legal movies made their mark, with a few exceptions like Sunny Deol’s strongman cum lawyer in Damini. Arshad Warsi and Akshay Kumar both played the titular roles in Jolly LLB series — as not-so-clean lawyers who had their hearts at the right place. Kumar however headlined another movie Rustom which is based on the highly publicized K M Nanavati vs State of Maharashtra court case from the 50s. The case also inspired another web series named 'The Verdict – State vs Nanavati’ on AltBalaji. In fact, most legal dramas in India have mimicked real life like No One Killed Jessica, starring Vidya Balan and Rani Mukherjee. Tamil film Jai Bhim which stars Surya also mimics the real life activist and lawyer Justice K Chandru who had worked for the downtrodden. India with its history of delayed yet sensational court cases offers a lot of fodder for fiction, and OTT which is unafraid of diving into the realm of controversy is now bringing a lot of it to screens. But in my opinion, my services are helping level the college playing field. Most of my clients work part- or full-time jobs, and many have children or come from disadvantaged backgrounds. They use Killer Papers to help them compete against students who don't need to work, have less responsibilities, had private tutors in the past, or attended better schools.Everyone has an opinion, but over the past six years, my business has never stopped growing.Then <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ChatGPT was released</a>. Students could generate high-quality, plagiarism-free writing in seconds (and for free). I thought my business was about to crumble, and so did everyone else.<h2>I started this career in high school where I wrote papers for my classmates</h2>Some students whispered that I was just as important to our school's athletic program as the quarterback or starting point guard — not because I was on the team, but because while the players were busy practicing, playing "Call of Duty," and getting drunk, I was writing their papers on Napoleon Bonaparte and "The Kite Runner." For $20-30 apiece, athletes and rich kids had me write their papers. Everyone was happy. I was making money doing what I loved, and they stayed in good academic standing. Business boomed, but as word spread, I eventually found myself sitting in the principal's office facing serious consequences. I narrowly avoided any trouble and decided to close up shop.Six years later, I graduated college and, with my finance degree in hand, landed a prestigious job in banking. Like many other young guys, I watched "The Wolf of Wall Street" and thought working in finance would be glamorous and exciting. Turns out, eight hours of making spreadsheets and a brutal commute wasn't what I wanted to do with my life. I hated it and decided it was time to start my own business.This was in 2016, when social media advertising was becoming popular. I realized I could reach millions of college students with just a few hundred bucks. What could I sell them? That's right: essays.I fired up the old business, ran some ads, and wrote 100 papers for free to build up a reputation on social media. Fast forward another six years, I found myself doing seven figures in annual revenue at the end of November 2022 and cash flowing more money than I could have ever imagined. Q4 was wrapping up since students would soon be on winter break, Christmas was around the corner, and life was good.Then, on November 30, ChatGPT came out and changed everything. Everyone in the writing industry, be it academic ghostwriting, copywriting, or even Hollywood screenwriting, was hit with an atomic bomb.<h2>My first feeling was panic, sheer and utter panic</h2>Killer Papers had survived the COVID-19 pandemic, which destroyed thousands of businesses, and the subsequent challenging economy where inflation soared and consumer sentiment tanked. Startups I once envied went bust, and many <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/zoom-shares-down-90-peak-pandemic-boom-fades-2022-11-22/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">public companies saw their stock plummet 80-90%</a>.Through all this, Killer Papers continued to grow and saw a 70% year-over-year revenue growth from 2021 to 2022. We benefitted from strong virtual tutoring services during the pandemic (when most in-person tutoring and writing centers were closed).We weren't just surviving. We were thriving. But ChatGPT's launch posed a significant threat to certain industries, and no business was more in its crosshairs than an essay-writing service.The day ChatGPT was released, I received over 150 messages through our <a href="https://www.instagram.com/killerpapers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">company's Instagram page</a> asking about it or, as you might imagine, making fun of me. <div type="image" title="KP screenshot 1" height="188" width="700" msid="103633607" hostid="261" sizebytes="5376"></div>My first move after reading some of the messages was to ask ChatGPT to write me a 500-word summary of "Romeo and Juliet." Thirty seconds later, I had a piece of writing that could pass a 9th grade literature course.I asked my professor buddy, Alan, to scan it on TurnItIn, the leading anti-plagiarism software. I was curious if the ChatGPT-written summary would set off its plagiarism detector. The essay passed with flying colors.Alan said it best: "You're fucked." And others agreed.<div type="image" title="KP screenshot 2" height="765" width="700" msid="103633611" hostid="261" sizebytes="39494"></div><div type="image" title="KP screenshot 3" height="148" width="700" msid="103633616" hostid="261" sizebytes="3842"></div><div type="image" title="KP screenshot 4" height="194" width="700" msid="103633619" hostid="261" sizebytes="5346"></div><h2>I was already in panic mode, and now I had the added displeasure of being mocked by hundreds of people online</h2>When ChatGPT was released in November, our busy season was almost over. Many students had not yet adopted AI writing or were afraid to try it, and December sales rose about 50% from the year prior. We capped off a successful 2022 calendar year.But, trouble loomed. January and February were solid months, but trended toward lower levels of growth. Then, in March, the growth disappeared. From March through mid-May, sales started declining year-over-year, and April was the worst: we saw revenue drop a staggering 28%. For a business that hadn't stopped growing in six years, this felt apocalyptic. And I wasn't just worried about the present, but I was thinking about what the future would look like with AI. It was all happening so damn fast. Public companies began integrating with it or making their own AI-powered tools. Venture capital flooded into the AI sector like Niagra Falls. With each passing day, not only was AI getting better, but the pace at which it was improving was increasing.It was a dark time for me and it felt like my future and life plans were disappearing before my eyes.<h2>Things were tough for my competitors, too</h2>Several of them reached out and introduced themselves to ask how Killer Papers was being affected by AI. I had never spoken with them prior to this, but everyone was in panic-mode and dealing with challenges.Tutoring services were also struggling. Even Chegg, a billion-dollar homework help site, saw its <a href="https://fortune.com/2023/05/02/chegg-shares-tumble-students-fleeing-chatgpt-a-i/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stock drop almost 50%</a> in a single day.Despite all of that, I'm not the kind of guy to stay down when life kicks me in the nuts. Back when I first started Killer Papers, people told me it would never work, and I was able to prove them wrong.Although I was genuinely terrified of what AI could do (and was doing) to my business, I knew crying about it wouldn't do any good. I was either going to adapt or die, but I was determined to prove people wrong again. My mom said it best, "Fight like hell to keep what you've built." So I did.<h2>Here's how I've adapted to ChatGPT</h2>1. I made fun of myself on social media I admitted that ChatGPT posed a severe threat to my business. People loved the honesty, and some even rallied to my defense. <ol start="2"><li>I adjusted spending around my company</li></ol>I cut "nice-to-haves," eliminated bonuses, and negotiated lower rates for some of the software products we used or influencers we marketed with.With that savings, I increased our marketing spend by 2x and blasted out discount codes in greater value and frequency than ever before. In this new marketing plan, I focused on what was selling: 1-on-1 virtual tutoring, projects with longer page requirements and word counts, complex source requirements and career-related offerings including resumes, cover letters and even mock interviews. Additionally, some clients started asking us to edit or expand upon work that AI had created for them. For instance, clients generated outlines or thesis statements using AI, and then ask us to find supporting sources and build out the writing further.<ol start="3"><li>I used AI for some tasks</li></ol>Finally, we embraced AI in a limited capacity to assist with some administrative work, including payroll and accounting, to help save time and money.<h2>A combination of events put our business back on track</h2>During the time we were making these changes, educators seemingly woke up, too. Assignments became more complex, and warnings were given at most major universities that educators would run all completed assignments through AI detection software. Additionally, during the summer of 2023, distinguished computer scientists from Stanford and UC Berkeley found that <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2307.09009.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ChatGPT's response quality and performance degraded over time</a>.Some combination of the above put the business back on track. From June 1st through August 25th of this year, revenue at Killer Papers grew almost 35% yearly.At the time of writing, August is on track for 40% revenue growth, with virtual live-tutoring services representing their greatest share of sales ever. While the new fall semester will be more indicative of a clear return to growth, I'm cautiously optimistic that 2023 will close as our best year yet.<h2>I'm excited that business has returned, but I'm still worried about what's coming</h2>AI isn't going anywhere, even if it's in a lull for now. There are substantial financial incentives to advance AI, with public and venture capital flowing into the sector, and we've yet to see the biggest changes when it comes to AI-generated writing. For now, I'll continue to focus on differentiating Killer Papers, adding new products and services, and adapting to changes in academia. I'm anticipating that as AI advances, educators will have no choice but to eventually embrace it. If and when that happens, we'll embrace it, too, if that's what clients want.To any writers out there, whether you're in your parents' basement working on your novel or in Hollywood striking for better pay and AI regulation, I urge you to roll with the punches, because the punches are coming. Public companies like <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/07/technology/ai-chatbots-google-microsoft.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Microsoft have made AI their highest priority</a>, and they're just getting started. I love writing, and it's a shame that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lost-job-chatgpt-made-me-obsolete-copywriter-2023-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">robots are replacing writers</a>. Nothing is more human than writing, and I hope there's still a place for us in the future, even as AI becomes part of the process.For writers, it's not just about dodging these AI curveballs but hitting them out of the park. The key lies in finding the silver lining, embracing change, and redefining what it means to be a writer in the digital age.
