Different categories within this scale represent varying health risks. During Diwali this year, Delhi’s AQI surpassed 400 once again, categorising it as “very poor” to “severe” — even two days after the festival. To combat the issue, authorities implemented a series of emergency measures through the <keyword id="19920169" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="graded-response-action-plan" source="keywords">Graded Response Action Plan</keyword> (GRAP), including bans on diesel generators and regular sprinkling of roadways. While these measures offered some relief, Delhi’s air quality remained severely compromised for days. <h2>Long-term health implications</h2>The pollution crisis in cities like Lahore and Delhi poses a substantial long-term health risk. In Lahore, residents could lose an average of 7.5 years of life expectancy if these pollution levels persist, according to the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute. As a teacher of 14 years, I just <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-doesnt-like-school-shootings-are-fact-of-life-2024-9">can't believe school shootings have become so normalized</a>.When I first started teaching in Montgomery County, Maryland, we had a couple of instances of threats in the community that we had to shelter for. We made sure all children were in the classroom and closed our doors, but otherwise continued with our normal routines. These had nothing to do with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dad-researched-school-shooting-survival-shares-tips-for-parents-2023-3">suspected school shooters</a>, though.We also ran <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viral-tiktok-about-school-shooting-is-helpful-security-expert-says-2023-6">drills for lockdowns</a> in case a threat to the school had entered the premises. You'd shut and lock your door, close the blinds, turn off lights, and crouch in a corner with all the kids out of sight from any windows or doors.I remember <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mom-pulled-kid-out-of-school-because-active-shooter-drills-2022-12">running drills for both shelters and lockdowns</a>, but the children and I didn't feel scared when doing them. We didn't ever actually expect that a drill could become a reality.<h2 id="4ab4affc-5db4-4946-bcdd-33919892f576">Threats feel much more real now</h2>After three years of teaching at that school, I spent years teaching in Chicago and New York City. Five years ago, I came back to Montgomery County, and since then, the threat of a school shooter feels much more real.We've heard about shootings consistently enough to make them feel like it could actually happen in our school. Every drill doesn't just feel like a drill anymore. You have to shake the trauma off after each one.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mom-shares-what-its-raising-child-in-the-lockdown-generation-2023-2">We do lockdown drills</a> about four times each school year. In the mornings, we'll be informed there will be a drill later in the day. When I first started out, it was always done without warning, but because it has recently caused so much worry, we're warned what time they'll happen.I'll inform the kids, who this year are mostly 9-year-olds, and tell them exactly what they'll do. I warn them to be <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/former-teacher-and-mom-shares-toll-from-school-shootings-2023-3">absolutely silent even for the drill</a>, saying that if it were the real thing, just the slightest whisper might invite a shooter into our classroom.<h2 id="0378c47a-9392-414d-9038-b3d3f88efd37">Kids have a lot of questions</h2>Some of the children take the drills light-heartedly. Others are very quiet, and I can tell they're worried.Once the drill finishes, I debrief with the class, letting them ask me questions and tell me how they feel. This debrief used to be short, but now, kids always have lots of questions.Some of the most common ones are: How would someone get into the school? Why would someone want to hurt us? What if they see or hear us? What if I get stuck in the bathroom or the nurse's office when the lockdown has already happened?These drills, although just practice, become more of a reality with every school shooting we hear about.I answer each question of theirs as honestly as possible because while I don't want to scare them unnecessarily, both they and I know that a school shooter in our building is definitely a risk.But I try to lighten the mood."They'll have to get through Mrs. Maresco, so they'll never get into our room," I tell them. "I'll take them out before they get to you."It's true. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-school-teacher-taking-bullet-not-in-my-contract-2024-9">I would protect the children in my class</a> as if they were my own. I'd put myself in front of them at any cost. I'm a mama bear for each class I teach, and I want children to know they are safe in my care.<h2 id="17a0fbc0-8148-4046-95fa-562d7ccd432c">I'm also a mom of 2</h2>But I don't want to have to do that because I have two little girls who are waiting for their mom to come home to them at the end of my workday.I don't want to take down someone who has a gun because I don't want to be the teacher who was in the news last week, who tried to help, and now can't go home to his kids. But I might have to.I've heard people raise concerns that the drills traumatize children. They might be annoyed by their frequency and their impact on the kids, especially young ones.But drills aren't where we should direct our irritation. If nothing is going to change, drills are our only option as teachers to keep ourselves and our students safe. Our frustration should be directed at the fact that this issue hasn't gone away.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An "effective altruism" charity backed by Sam Bankman-Fried is set to close.</li><li>The jailed former crypto billionaire was a major proponent of effective altruism.</li></ul>A UK-based "effective altruism" charity funded by the disgraced former cryptocurrency billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried is set to close.Effective Ventures Foundation UK, originally incorporated in 2012, reported income of more than £140 million in 2022, which is around $177 million as of April 2024.But a report filed by the charity in March said that its board did not intend to sponsor new projects and was expected to "wind down (in 2025 or beyond)" after spinning out its projects into independent entities.It was also confirmed last week that the charity would be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wythamabbey.org/farewell">selling Wytham Abbey</a>, a 15th Century manor house that it owned near the city of Oxford in the UK, where it ran some of its effective altruism projects.Effective altruism is a philosophical movement that was developed in 2011 by philosophers from the University of Oxford.In essence, it seeks to understand how to use resources best in order to help people.Luke Kemp, a research affiliate at the University of Cambridge's Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, previously told Business Insider that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-bankman-fried-ftx-collapse-effective-altruism-donate-philanthropy-money-2022-12">Bankman-Fried, 32, was "the poster child"</a> as well as "the financial backbone of the movement."<a target="_blank" href="https://orgs.law.harvard.edu/effectivealtruism/about-us/about-effective-altruism/">Harvard Law School</a> describes it as "partly a research field, which aims to identify the world's most pressing problems and the best solutions to them" and "partly a practical community that aims to use those findings to do good."The idea quickly became popular among the mega-rich and tech leaders in Silicon Valley — and it is also what brought together the leaders of Bankman-Fried's cryptocurrency exchange FTX and his trading company, Alameda Research, Michael Lewis, an author who wrote about SBF's rise and fall, said, per the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/128f3a15-b048-4741-b3e0-61c9346c390b">Financial Times</a>.But Effective Ventures was hit hard by the bankruptcy of FTX in November 2022, and the charity announced that together with its US arm, it would have to repay the FTX bankruptcy estate nearly $27 million that it received from the exchange in 2022.The UK Charity Commission also opened an inquiry into Effective Ventures UK in December 2022 in order to assess any potential risks to the charity's assets.In a statement to BI, the Commission said the inquiry was still ongoing.News of the charity's intention to close comes a week after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-bankman-fried-sentenced-prison-ftx-alameda-research-2024-3">Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison</a> for fraud. It has been edited for length and clarity.My wife, Kristi, and I were inspired to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/move-from-us-to-france-without-visiting-first-worth-it-2024-1">move to France </a>after watching a documentary about British people who'd relocated there.At the time, we rented a two-bedroom home in a sought-after area with high real estate prices. We realized we couldn't afford the type of place we wanted because it would have cost around $260K.So, in 2017, we bought a four-bedroom fixer-upper in the north-west of France for $29K. Kristi, 38, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/homeless-living-tent-maine-working-poor-afford-rent-2022-08">lived in a tent </a>during the start of the renovations, and I visited every two months to help. I fully transferred in 2020.We're in a rural location close to Limoges, which has an airport. It's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/avelo-tiny-low-cost-airline-expanding-new-cities-list-2024-4">served by a low-cost airline</a>, and, depending on the time of year, we can fly back to the UK for just $29 round trip.Our family — we have two kids, Alicia, 3, and 18-month-old Haydn — is very happy. Meanwhile, the price of our property — now that it's renovated — has increased to between $215K and $260K. But, finances aside, we can't imagine going back to the UK.Here are three pros and just one con about ex-pat life in France.<h2 id="c00092e6-b573-4d14-8a72-5a41d0c33e2a">The French are friendly — but you need to make an effort with their language</h2>It's important to try at least to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-we-still-need-french-2014-2">speak some French</a>, even if you get it wrong. In my experience, French people appreciate visitors and ex-pats who try to communicate and respect the culture.Some ex-pats do themselves no favors by thinking, "Everyone speaks English, so why bother?"It can be hard to understand colloquialisms and the local patois. But, if we trip up, it usually ends with a laugh.<h2 id="e523d0c7-7a4f-435b-8601-90ef06a70008">Family comes first</h2>The French don't live to work. They believe spending as much time as possible with family is essential.In August, everything pretty much shuts down. Workplaces close — apart from essential services — and people go on vacation en masse.It's usually four weeks of lovely weather, and the campgrounds, hotels, and B&amp;Bs are often full. One of the most popular types of vacation is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interesting-things-about-traveling-in-rv-with-kids-photos-2022-2">touring around in an RV</a>. Practically every town and village has a motorhome stopover spot.You stay there for free. The idea is that people will buy something from the local stores, and it will generate business.<h2 id="33ad028d-1d89-4c50-b4f0-9529ad447aa2">Kids start school at 3</h2>The education system in France is superior. There are public schools for 3-year-olds, who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/parenting/potty-training">must be potty trained</a> at that age. The authorities believe adamantly in early education.Alicia goes to school between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. No academics, and formal classes don't start until the children are 7.It's well-known that the French love their cuisine. Alicia is served a healthy, four-course <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-states-pay-free-lunch-public-school-students-heres-how-2023-8">lunch at school</a>. It's far more convenient for parents, and she loves it.<h2 id="b47983d0-36a3-47a1-80d9-03dd1691bc53">There's a lot of bureaucracy</h2>The French like everyone to have a job. It's one of the reasons that a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.strategie.gouv.fr/english-articles/public-sector-balance#:~:text=Without%20a%20doubt%2C%20France%20is,US%20(see%20Graph%201).">large proportion of the population</a> works in the public sector.The downside is that you will never deal with one person. They'll say they must pass things on to a colleague, then another colleague, and so on.Filling out paperwork for a driver's license or passport is laborious and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-jamie-dimon-says-bureaucracy-is-crippling-us-hindering-progress-2021-4">involves a lot of red tape</a>.Personally, I've also found that some people dislike online forms and email for official applications. Sometimes, they prefer handwritten or typed paperwork you must print out before sending it.You can wait months for an answer but keep being fobbed off. Eventually, they will say they've lost the forms. We pushed prom back until it became nonexistent. Graduation traditions like Senior Sunrise and Senior Ditch Day disappeared completely. Meanwhile, the details of our actual graduation ceremony became a mystery.I watched on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-media-and-loneliness-epidemic-cause-cure-tech-companies-2024-2">social media</a> as schools around the country forced their seniors into graduating on Zoom calls. Some were even given their diplomas via drive-thrus as if they were ordering at McDonalds.Luckily, my high school decided to push our graduation to late July for an in-person ceremony. But it didn't feel like a moment of celebration. Everyone had to be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-distance-six-feet-photos-2020-3">six feet apart</a>, silent, and wearing a mask. Graduation parties were nonexistent except for a select few.Those of us who persevered through the strange pandemic high school graduation are now <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recently-graduated-college-incredibly-lonely-struggling-adjust-2024-1">graduating from college</a>. This month, I finally got my chance to celebrate my education properly at the New School in New York City.<h2 id="73e94df9-6fd5-4389-99fe-b11302b14b79">The pandemic rippled throughout my college career</h2>After my high school graduation, the awkward Zoom school years didn't end. In fact, I took <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/learning/best-free-online-courses-from-top-universities">virtual classes</a> in college on and off through the end of 2021. Right when we thought we were safe to continue maskless, someone would get sick. It'd be another round of pretending to pay attention while my video was off.I assume those who were able to enjoy college pre-2020 got to experience new adventures, like sneaking into frat parties as a freshman. For the class of 2024, that wasn't really a possibility. Even visiting campus facilities was a feat since actual campuses were shut down.Plus, being locked inside for so long took away our <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-skills-that-will-make-you-more-likable-2017-6">social skills</a>. Once we were let out into the world again, it was difficult for me to make friends, and college is the time you're supposed to be the most social. It was incredibly frustrating.But as my college career continued, I was able to enjoy the true "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-at-nyu-stern-found-supportive-community-2023-11">college experience</a>" everyone describes: parties, late nights studying in the library, and all the essential experiences that allow for the bridge into adulthood.<h2 id="2b683417-c739-4411-b92a-398ce4bd0769">I almost missed out on an in-person graduation again</h2>Just a couple of weeks before my college graduation was scheduled, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newschoolfreepress.com/2024/05/10/protestors-arrested-at-faculty-solidarity-encampment-rally-for-palestine/">protests for Gaza</a> began on the New School campus. At the same time, our professors moved our classes to parks, studios, or the dreaded Zoom.Once again, my graduation ceremony seemed uncertain. It wasn't clear if the school would cancel it amid the protests.My fellow classmates and I felt a mass amount of exhaustion. We had already gone through so much over four years, and at the home stretch, it felt like it could all fall apart again. Our last ask as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-pomboy-consumer-spending-savings-debt-inflation-interest-rates-recession-2024-5">debt-ridden</a> 20-year-olds was to walk across the stage for 10 seconds.Thankfully, the ceremony was not canceled. On my graduation day — just last week — I woke up at 6 a.m., sat with my fellow graduates, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-presented-with-college-diploma-while-she-was-in-labor-2023-5">received my diploma</a> on the stage.It's funny to think that three years ago, in order to leave a dorm, I had to put on a mask to go through the hallway and then head outside. But now, my friends and I can sit right next to each other with our caps and gowns while joking throughout our ceremony.The heaviness of the moment was not lost on me. After everything my class has been through, graduation felt more meaningful and lively. I'm beyond grateful to finally get the chance to celebrate everything I accomplished.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A college enrollment crisis is likely coming this fall.</li><li>It's a result of complications with the FAFSA form, along with a lower supply of high school seniors.</li></ul>High school graduates aren't going to college like they used to.Katharine Meyer, a fellow at the Brown Center on Education Policy at the nonprofit Brookings Institution, told Business Insider that colleges are "very worried."Over the past decade, a range of challenges have hit higher education: More jobs have become available in the past few years that don't require college degrees, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-value-of-college-higher-education-student-debt-tuition-2023-12">Gen Zers have started to rethink</a> whether the degree is worth the student debt, and, of course, the pandemic prompted some students to press pause on college or even drop out.Overall enrollment for 18- to 24-year-olds declined from 41% in 2010 to 38% in 2021, <a target="_blank" href="https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/indicator/cha">according</a> to the National Center for Education Statistics. While enrollment <a target="_blank" href="https://nscresearchcenter.org/current-term-enrollment-estimates/">saw a resurgence</a> following the pandemic, per the National Student Clearinghouse — undergraduate enrollment grew 1.2% in fall 2023, and freshman enrollment grew 0.8% — trouble could again be on the horizon.The immediate concern for colleges and students is the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dad-paying-for-college-fafsa-issues-parent-plus-student-loans-2024-3">Free Application for Federal Student Aid</a>, or FAFSA, form. The Education Department announced last year that it was overhauling the form to make it easier for parents and students to access, but at the outset, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fafsa-why-parents-students-have-to-wait-financial-aid-awards-2024-1">the form's rollout was delayed</a>. There were errors with some aid calculations, forcing some schools to push back their commitment deadlines to allow for more time for students to evaluate their award packages.The delays and errors have meant fewer students are completing their FAFSA forms. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncan.org/page/FAFSAtracker">According</a> to the National College Attainment Network, 32.9% of high school seniors have completed the FAFSA through April 19, down 29% from the last academic year.Based on how a drop in FAFSA submissions during Covid impacted enrollment in the fall of 2020, that's a pretty good indicator that college enrollment will be much lower this fall, MorraLee Keller, senior director of strategic programming at NCAN, told BI."At the rate that FAFSAs are being submitted this year, we can project out, unless something major happens, maybe a 10 to 15% drop in FAFSAs," Keller said, though she emphasized that there's still time for students to apply for financial aid if they haven't yet.But it's not just the FAFSA. There's also a limited supply of high school seniors right now due to lower birth rates during the Great Recession. With a growing number of young people questioning the value of a college degree, enrollment-dependent institutions could suffer financial setbacks — or even shut down."I think all colleges are worried," Meyer said. "They're worried on different margins. Even the large institutions, the well-resourced institutions that have large endowments, they're still worried about getting their students through the door."<h2>Students could face lasting setbacks</h2>Most of the FAFSA issues will likely be resolved by this time next year. But some of the delays in early 2024 could have lasting implications. The national birth rate declined by nearly 23% from 2007 to 2022, falling at a quicker rate right after the Great Recession.Meyer said that colleges have been aware of this enrollment dip for a while, and said colleges have two options: convince more high school graduates to enroll or entice older adults back to school."Universities are thinking about this as more of a business model and thinking about how do they sustain enrollment so they could stay open," Meyer said. "And so those are sort of the numbers games of enrollment efforts."However, enrollment declines have already stunted financial growth at some schools. The Chhattisgarh government has said schools in the state will continue to remain closed till further orders in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, a move welcomed by many parents. As per the Centre's guidelines, state governments can take decision about reopening of schools after October 15. However, the Chhattisgarh cabinet on Thursday decided that in view of the pandemic situation in the state, schools will continue to remain shut. Hailing the move, Chhattisgarh Parents' Association (CPA), a state-level body, has demanded that the central and state governments declare this academic session as "zero year" for students till Class 8 and promote them to the next class. "Safety of children is the priority of every parent and sending them to school in the present peak situation of the virus outbreak will put their life at risk," CPA president Kristopher Paul told . "The government should declare the 2020-21 academic session as zero year for classes from nursery till 8 and promote the students to the next class," said Paul, whose son is in Class 6 in a private school in Rajnandgaon town. He said students of classes 9 to 12 should be given assignments and projects for their final evaluation, but schools should also not be opened for them till the COVID-19 situation is under control. Echoing similar views, Pradip Dongre, a sub-engineer with the irrigation department in Dantewada, said the current situation is not conducive for physical classes. "Why would parents like to allow their children to go out and expose themselves to the virus? It would be difficult for a school to identify which child's family members are infected by COVID-19," he said. Dongre said his son and daughter, who are in Class 8 and 12, respectively, are comfortable with online classes. Till Saturday, the state reported 1,40,258 COVID-19 cases and of these, over 80,000 cases were detected in the last one month. Though parents remain concerned, students of senior classes are disappointed with prolonged closure of schools as they are finding it difficult to understand topics clearly online due to internet connectivity issues. Shatabdi Rai, a Class 11 student of Career Public School in Korba, said online classes have changed the style of learning. "It is hard to understand topics clearly and get our doubts resolved online. Poor network is also an issue. Online classes cannot match normal classroom learning," she said. Annu Dubey, a Class 12 student of Maitri Vidya Niketan school at Bhilai (Durg district), said she not only misses seeing her friends, but also school sports. "I miss my friends and being in school as it is my last year of school education. We are becoming used to virtual classes, but they are not good as they create confusion a lot of times. Everyone starts asking questions together or sometimes internet connectivity gets disrupted," she said. In the wake of the pandemic, many government and private schools in the state have undertaken online classes to continue with the academic session. The state government's online academic portal, called 'Padhai Tuhar Duar', (learning at your doorstep), has proved beneficial for students and is being appreciated across the country, a government statement said on Friday. The portal was launched in the early stage of the nationwide lockdown to provide hassle-free and non-stop learning to children, it said. Till now, 39.57 lakh online classes have been successfully conducted by 1.43 lakh teachers, imparting education to 3.77 lakh children via smartphones, it said. Offline classes are also being conducted under the Padhai Tuhar Para (learning at your locality) initiative in remote and forested regions, which lack internet connectivity. As part of the initiative, 23,643 teachers are helping over 7.48 students via 35,982 centres, the release said. The offline classes are being conducted mostly in villages in collaboration with locals, it added.

"But their response to things that the students were writing, that they didn't like, was simply to shut the entire program down. However, the challenge is to find a way to end the academic year and assess students, she said. "While we are exploring various options, it is clear that schools will not open before Diwali," Gaikwad said. According to senior officials in the state education department, reopening schools under the current circumstances is out of question, as there is no sign of the pandemic abating. State Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant also said his department does not intend to reopen colleges until the COVID-19 situation is under control. "The situation is grim for students who wish to pursue higher studies abroad, as their future depends on our decision," he added. Even as the state government and bureaucracy mull over solutions, children and parents are worried as they seem to be caught in a quagmire. "I have taken an education loan and my parents are repaying it. Afternoons would roll into dinners with takeout, and soon, we were chatting into the early morning hours. Penny's husband, Shannon, would be there, as would Josh and his younger brother, Chris.
