Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story is streaming on SonyLIV— Here's what the infamous scam was all about

He also tells us what we can expect from StudioNEXT in the next few months.</li></ul>The Over-the-top (<keyword id="1245953" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ott" source="Orion">OTT</keyword>) space had been growing at a healthy pace even before we were hit by the pandemic. But it was during the lockdown that the OTT industry had its watershed moment. People discovered that the OTT platforms opened up the world for them, with content that went beyond boundaries. Great content from across the world kept us hooked, making the lockdown just a tad bit easier to bear. It also put the responsibility on content production houses to create clutter-breaking content because differentiation is what will help platforms stand out in the space which is getting cluttered fast. Last year, one of the biggest web series hits, Scam 1992, came from the stable of StudioNEXT, an independent business unit of <keyword id="3186877" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sony-pictures-networks-india" source="Orion">Sony Pictures Networks India</keyword> (SPN), and <keyword id="1322450" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="applause-entertainment" source="Orion">Applause Entertainment</keyword>. It is also the content production house responsible for <keyword id="17940" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kaun-banega-crorepati" source="Orion">Kaun Banega Crorepati</keyword>. When the division was set up around 2.5 years back, the aim was to function as a content creator for SPN media business as well as for other channels, networks and OTT players within India and globally. The goal was to produce new IPs whilst leveraging the existing ones under SPN media. On the occasion of the launch of StudioNEXT’s latest series, Whistleblower, we caught up with Indranil Chakraborty, Head StudioNEXT, to take a look back at the production house’s journey and to understand a few factors that have helped the company create content that has worked for viewers. The journey so far When SPN had set up the division, the destination hadn’t been written in stone. The aim was to create a flexible division, shared Chakraborty. “Having said that, we’ve had a fantastic journey so far. We have produced over 15 shows in the last 2.5 years across various languages. We began with KBC, our first web series, Scam 1992 has now been voted as the best web series to be produced in India so far. However, when we began our journey, we were clear that we wanted to create entertainment shows with a purpose for both TV and Digital. Our motto was to create good entertainment content and something with a purpose. We realized that there's a gap between a production house or studio which focuses on such shows and content,” explained Chakraborty. The company has also been especially focussed on collaboration, especially with content creators. On the TV side, it is experimenting with a few formats across languages. For a web series, it is collaborating with a whole lot of known as well as lesser known talents. “As of now we are working on around 10 shows. And from now till December next year, we have a mandate to deliver at least 6 shows. If we can do that, I believe we will be one of the biggest production houses for the digital ecosystem of the country. I can't think of many production houses which can deliver 6 shows in a year, and that too of such scale. Going forward, we want to do things that we are doing at a multiplied rate,” he added. Earlier this year, StudioNEXT also announced it will be collaborating with Venture Catalysts as the startup ecosystem advisor for the very first edition of <keyword id="1417364" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank" source="Orion">Shark Tank</keyword> India which Chakraborty feels is one of the major highlights for the company, along with producing KBC in Kashmir and the reception that Scam 1992 received. Indianizing successful international content With the production of Shark Tank, is the content house considering Indianizing more such successful international IPs? “We associated with Venture Catalyst because they had great domain knowledge and they are known in that space and this partnership helped us a lot. Talking about more such formats, we are exploring a few game formats along with a few other things, but right now, our focus is on making Shark Tank a success. We want to see how this does, if it goes into multiple seasons and has the potential to be done in multiple languages too. So right now, we are concentrating on growing deeper inside the shows we are already doing, rather than laterally expanding ourselves,” he shared. The content India wants to consume The last year has shown that Indians are hungry for good content. Series like Scam 1992 have won the internet and people are on the lookout for such content. On what he feels works for an Indian audience, Chakraborty said, “While I don’t know the exact numbers, viewership has been on a steady rise. In fact, in the content industry, there is more demand today than supply. But I feel if a story is honest, sincere and has integrity, it will work for the consumers. We have realized that the audience likes to discover different people, places, nuances and cultures and that's an important element in our shows. People are wanting to learn something from watching a show, a discovery of sorts and that's something we are trying to give them with our content.” With more and more platforms racing each other to produce and license better content, is it challenging to come up with clutter-breaking ideas? “I don’t believe the space is cluttered yet because there are too many stories to be told and we have just begun on this journey. There are many genres like romance, family drama etc that we are still exploring. I really feel it's a very exciting time for creators and writers,” he said. Indians are hungry for good content and OTT platforms have been constantly trying to up their games because it is only strong content that will help them break the clutter and make consumers choose one platform over the other. The 4-year-old Applause Entertainment, a content studio that is part of the <keyword id="44373" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aditya-birla-group" source="Orion">Aditya Birla Group</keyword>, has been a frontrunner for coming up with content that has been noticed and appreciated. Be it shows like Criminal Justice or Scam 1992, Applause has come up with content that has stood out. While so far, the studio’s focus has been original series, popular book and international format adaptations like Criminal Justice, <keyword id="57659" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hostages" source="Orion">Hostages</keyword>, it has recently partnered with <keyword id="173109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amar-chitra-katha" source="Orion">Amar Chitra Katha</keyword>, a publisher that has been our primary gateway to Indian mythological stories. And with this partnership, Applause Entertainment will mark its foray into animation. Meanwhile, the company is also looking at further expanding its offering with documentaries and small to mid budget films. Industry veteran Sameer Nair, who was the man responsible for giving us Kaun Banega Crorepati , is at the helm of affairs at Applause Entertainment, and he has his plate full at the moment. He is currently focusing on bringing bigger, more impactful content to your screens. In a recent chat, he told us more about the Amar Chitra Katha partnership, his expectations from the Indian content space and his plans for Applause Entertainment. Excerpts: Q)Your partnership with Amar Chitra Katha marks your foray into animation. What will this partnership entail? ACK is a treasured Indian brand that boasts 400+ stories and comics. Generations of Indians have grown up reading these stories. Now with this partnership, we want to both bring alive these characters in high quality animated episodes for the local audience, as well as take our proud Indian culture to global audiences. We plan to work with quality animation partners and storytellers to help us reimagine these iconic tales for the 21st century. Q)Applause has had a lot of success in terms of the content you have been produced in the past few years. Why was this a good time to explore animation? Applause is a Content and IP Creation Studio. We are storytellers, and we want to tell stories for every kind of audience. Different stories work best in different formats so as a studio, we have ensured that we produce content in the format that best suits the idea, whether drama, documentary, unscripted, film, animation or gaming. Q)Applause is 4 years old but 1.5 years out of that, we have lived/living through a pandemic. What kind of impact did it have on your business? The pandemic affected us like it did everyone else. Productions were stalled, theatres were shut, work from home became the norm. But consumption of content online exploded exponentially. Audiences adopted the OTT services and began to consume content across languages and borders. They accepted new forms of storytelling and created a host of new stars. The script became the hero supported by an ensemble of fine actors and directors. We had a pretty fortunate 2020, and 2021 so far, having released over 15 drama series across platforms, including the award winning Scam 1992 and Criminal Justice S2, to name a few. Q)What have some of your key learnings from these last 1.5 years been? Our key learning has been in a way a validation of our original premise; that we should obsessively focus on quality storytelling and carefully listen to what our consumers are saying, feeling, doing. That way we will be able to anticipate and create for the gigantic streaming market that is exploding in India and all over the world. Q)India's OTT industry is booming. People are hungry for bigger and better content. How are you as a production house equipped to meet that demand, and what makes Applause different from other content production houses? We continue to aggressively invest in incubation and development from an early stage. The audience appetite for quality content will only increase; that’s the key word – quality – and variety and diversity. Our learnings from the past 4 years have also helped us improve on our creative and commercial algorithms, and now allows us to place bigger bets with talent and scale. Our key differentiator from other studios remains our ‘risk-reward’ philosophy that sees us invest upfront in content creation, to be licensed to platform partners later. Q)Having your content on global OTT platforms also means the world is opening up for the content. From a quality perspective, where does India stand in the global scheme of things? Can we have content that goes beyond geographies and finds relevance across the world, something on the lines of Money Heist/Game of Thrones? I think the quality of Indian Content is constantly improving. That being said, as the market expands, streaming content will be distinctively divided into a massy AVOD offering and more premium SVOD fare. All content is created for a primary audience; sometimes, some of that content transcends languages and geographies to resonate with a global audience. Obviously, over the years, Hollywood has built this powerful franchise of content that is designed for worldwide audiences, but I think content from other countries will also gradually gain universal acceptance. For example, there was a phase when Chinese and Hong Kong Kungfu movies had become quite the rage. Now Korean drama series and KPop have broken out. It will be no different for India. Q)Going forward, what will your key areas of focus be? Where will your next phase of growth come from? Our next phase of growth will come from bigger series, movies, language expansion, global collaborations and animation. Q)How important is regional content for Applause? We don’t quite call it ‘regional’ content; for us it remains telling high quality stories in languages beyond our present Hindi/Hinglish slate. The streaming world is increasingly becoming a world without borders and there is growing acceptance for content without borders. This unfolding scenario is also setting the stage for content from India to resonate with audiences all over the world, and not just Indians.

In 2018 she found that Simran Bhogal, her second cousin, created the elaborate fiction with a web of accounts in a particularly sophisticated example of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/celebrities-catfished-online-fake-identities">catfishing</a>.By then, Assi had found and confronted the real Jandu, who had no idea who she was.Jandu and Assi reported Bhogal to the police in the UK. But catfishing is not a crime under UK law, and Bhogal was not charged or prosecuted.Assi sued Bhogal in English courts in a 2020 civil case. The attorneys also claimed that Assi always knew Bhogal was pretending to be Bobby and threatened to go public with the allegation if the lawsuit wasn't dropped.Assi said in the podcast: "It's outrageous. I just thought that's so low and so disgusting of you. You've already confessed."Assi did not back down.In episode six of the podcast, Mostrous said Bhogal offered a payout and a semi-private apology letter to settle the case in the spring of 2021. Many people in their 20s are watching it. It’s just that heroes should come from the masses and the audience. And, stories where common-man is the setting should be told,” Bajpayee said. ‘Mood of audience is changing’ Indian cinema has been transforming with movies like Kantara and more which are more rooted and local — and are gaining success too. “The more local a movie is, the more universal it is. But mainstream cinema tends to paint in broad strokes,” commented Anupama Chopra, a popular film critic. Most Indian movies, experts noted, are either potboilers or indulgent films which attract a niche audience which make distributors and producers develop cold feet, noted Bajpayee. He urged film makers to be less indulgent and choose middle-of-the-road cinema. Whether it’s the impact of OTT or the complexity of GenZ preferences, the mood of the audience has changed, experts noted at the panel discussion. The audience’s mood is scattered, with strong story backed-movies and potboilers with drama and emotion finding equal amounts of success. “If you see RRR, amidst all the larger-than-life stunts, the core of it is human emotion. Stories should empathize with the audience, create excitement with thrill and drama,” explained Bajpayee. Yet another fear that most filmmakers face is that the youth is getting disconnected from the large screens and there is a lot of fatigue in the world of entertainment. The younger audiences love their ‘shorts’ and more, and it takes a lot to bring them back to the big screens. Pratik Gandhi who is best known for portraying Harshad Mehta in the web series Scam 1992 said that movies that are rooted in soil always find their audience. In turn, it causes any person who knows Peter Parker to enter his world.That leads to the return of some familiar faces from other, older "Spider-Man" films who knew their Spidey's identity. "NWH" starts with high stakes that continually get higher and higher throughout the movie. Easily a film you'll want to watch again, "No Way Home" is a ride I never wanted to end. It's a marvel that something this ambitious came together.<h2>The trailers largely don't spoil the movie, but they probably could've left a few secrets hidden. </h2><div type="image" title="Doctor Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home" height="1160" width="2742" msid="88278932" hostid="261"></div>For the most part, the majority of the material in the trailers is from early on in the movie with a few notable exceptions.Marketing probably never needed to reveal the return of Sandman and The Lizard. Doc Ock, Goblin, and Electro would've been more than enough to let people know this was an event film. Those would've been nice surprises to see on screen for the first time. That said, there are two moments I wish weren't teased in trailers that occur late in the film. I won't say what they are since their spoilers, but I think they're worth discussing briefly since one may lead to a moment of frustration for fans.The first moment centered on Doctor Strange, which appears in just about every trailer, sets up a huge expectation for the film that's never fully delivered upon. That will bother some fans a bit because it feels like a bit of a bait and switch. I'm concerned fans will wish there was a bit more (even though they are being heavily rewarded in this film). I wish the second moment, which involved MJ, wasn't teased in the most recent trailer. It's one I've seen fans largely discuss and theorize about online to the extent that many, including myself, guessed how it would play out. While it doesn't ruin the experience of watching the final movie, it would've been a larger, more satisfying reveal if it wasn't teased.<h2>The villains get plenty of screen time to shine. Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina are scene-stealers. Jamie Foxx gets redemption.</h2><div type="image" title="Spider-Man No Way Home villains" height="2412" width="4577" msid="88278927" hostid="261"></div>There was a time where Sony wanted to make a "Sinister Six" movie, a film that revolves around a group of Peter Parker's greatest foes. It just never came together.Here, in "NWH," it feels like you finally get a taste of what that could have looked like as some of Spidey's adversaries interact (often playfully). It's such a highlight of the film.I don't want to say a whole lot on this front, but seeing these characters interact on screen reminded me of one of the best episodes of the Emmy-winning "Batman: The Animated Series." A 1992 episode titled "Almost Got 'Im" revolves around a series of villains reminiscing about times they almost caught the Bat. It was such a great episode because you finally saw many of Batman's legendary villains interacting and it made for a fascinating watch.On paper, it seems like such a simple idea. Why wouldn't you put together all of a hero's villains on screen to work together? What would Two-Face and Penguin say to one another if they ever had the chance? Would they get along? Why aren't they pooling their resources to take down the Caped Crusader?But no one — not Marvel or Warner Bros. — has been able to deliver a live-action replica of a group of supervillains other than in animation. Sony succeeds in being the first studio to finally make it work with a big cast in a way that's nostalgic but also ridiculously fun.Foxx, as Electro, finally sheds the blue look and is redeemed as a more badass force to be reckoned with. Alfred Molina and, especially, Willem Dafoe steal every scene they're in. The greatest fan service is that audiences get to see these two actors share the screen and scenes. Since they've never interacted in the first trilogy. <div type="image" title="Spider-Man No Way Home Green Goblin" height="2412" width="4577" msid="88278928" hostid="261"></div>Dafoe is pure movie magic on screen. At 66, it's impressive to see this man in so many action sequences. There's one fight sequence in particular that fans will immediately want to watch again. If Sony had its own streaming service, I'd imagine they'd fast-track a Norman Osborn series.If this film succeeds, which I think it will, I wouldn't be surprised if the other studios follow suit to try and get their own villain groups on screen.<h2>'No Way Home' takes Parker from Spider-boy to Spider-Man and sets up a potentially exciting next film.</h2><div type="image" title="Peter Parker Spider-Man: No Way Home" height="1705" width="3031" msid="88278933" hostid="261"></div>"No Way Home" very much feels like the end of a trilogy.One of the largest critiques of Tom Holland's solo "Spider-Man" films is that they've never truly felt like solo Spider-Man flicks. Holland's Spidey has always had help from Happy and tech suits or a bigger A-list hero to swoop in and save him when he got in over his head. He was never the adult in the room."Homecoming" was an Iron Man and Spider-Man film. "Far From Home" was a Nick Fury and Spidey team-up (with Stark tech at Spidey's disposal). "No Way Home" has Doctor Strange to aid in Spidey's mishap.In "No Way Home," Peter has graduated from Spidey kid to full-fledged Spider-Man. The training wheels protocol (a security measure Stark put on Peter's first suit) is finally complete.I expect the next "Spider-Man" sequel (or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fandango.com%2Fmovie-news%2Fspider-man-no-way-home-producer-amy-pascal-reveals-more-about-the-historic-film-and-confirms-tom-hollands-future-as-spider-man-754461">series of films</a>) will hone in on Holland's Spidey as he really comes into his own without the need of someone, who needs to swoop in and save the day for him. Spider-Man can finally handle it on his own.As always, stick around until the film's very end. There are two end-credit scenes. The first teases what's ahead (hopefully) in "Spider-Man 4," and, ultimately, may lead to another source of frustration with fans.The second isn't so much an end-credits scene as it is the teaser for next summer's "Doctor Strange" sequel. I'm saying this because, if you miss it, it's likely only a matter of time until it's online.I don't know if we'll ever get a bigger "Spider-Man" film than "No Way Home," but if the fans show their love for this one, I'd love to see Sony try and top it.<h2>'Spider-Man: No Way Home' is a love letter to fans that should be seen with fans, if you feel safe to do so.</h2><div type="image" title="Spider-Man: No Way Home MJ and Ned" height="2677" width="4014" msid="88278930" hostid="261"></div>People have asked me which "Spider-Man" movies you should rewatch before "NWH." I've said all of them since it includes villains from the five Maguire and Garfield-era films. I still stand by that assessment. Just as "Avengers: Endgame" rewarded those who watched all 20+ MCU movies beforehand, "NWH" rewards long-time Spidey fans with nods, quips, callbacks, jokes, and, most of all, closure.Most importantly, the film doesn't retcon or reboot any of its returning characters (Yes, Electro may look a bit different, but that's addressed. There will be <a href="https://www.insider.com/wandavision-finale-evan-peters-pietro-real-identity-explained-2021-3">no "WandaVision" Ralph Bohner repeat</a>, here). There may be a few holes in the film, but overall the two decades you may have invested into watching "Spider-Man" films are respected on screen. Is the fan service ever too much? I didn't think so. My press screening, filled largely with critics, cheered, laughed, and clapped a few times throughout. There was even an "awww." (Just so you know, press screenings are usually rather quiet for the most part.) For that reason, if you feel comfortable, "No Way Home" is better viewed with a crowd who loves these films.For the past two years, box-office analysts have wondered what film would get fans back to the theaters. This is it.This is a film you want to experience with other people. You want to collectively cheer and cry out and react. Not every film necessitates that. "No Way Home" is the first time since "Avengers: Endgame" where I've truly felt the presence of an audience would only add to your experience because of the nature of the film.Directed by Jon Watts and also starring Jon Favreau, J.K. Simmons, and Marisa Tomei, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is in theaters Friday.<h2>Grade: A-</h2>
