Counted as it is among the world’s fastest growing economies, an unfathomable amount of money flows in and out of the Indian economic system. But there are cracks in said system, and ever so often, a fraudulent mastermind uses them to slip some cash out for their advantage. From <keyword id="19964851" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ponzi" source="keywords">Ponzi</keyword> schemes to bank frauds, the Indian government and investors have fallen victim to many financial scandals — some of which were so sordid that they can be recounted like they happened yesterday. Here’s a rundown of the most infamous scams in Indian financial history: <h2><keyword id="20713434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="harshad-mehta" source="keywords">Harshad Mehta</keyword> Scam (1992) – ₹4,000 Crore </h2>Perhaps the most iconic of all Indian financial scams, Harshad Mehta was known as the "Big Bull" of the stock market. He manipulated stock prices using illegal loopholes in the banking system. By obtaining unsecured loans from banks and investing them in the stock market, Mehta artificially inflated stock prices. His bubble burst when banks demanded their money back, revealing the massive fraud. This scandal led to a major reform in India's financial markets. Mehta died in jail before full legal accountability was reached, but the scam caused a significant loss to investors and led to tighter regulation in the Indian stock market. <h2><keyword id="23122396" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="satyam-scam" source="keywords">Satyam Scam</keyword> (2009) – ₹14,000 Crore </h2>Dubbed as India’s Enron, the Satyam scandal involved its founder, <keyword id="23122397" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ramalinga-raju" source="keywords">Ramalinga Raju</keyword>, admitting to falsifying the company's accounts to the tune of ₹14,000 crore. Satyam Computer Services, once considered a blue-chip company, was found guilty of inflating profits and revenues. Raju admitted to the scam after a failed attempt to buy two Maytas firms owned by his family. This case brought corporate governance issues in India to the forefront. Raju was convicted, but the legal processes have allowed him temporary freedom through bail. But this incident called for improved transparency and stricter corporate governance norms. <h2>Punjab National Bank Scam (2018) – ₹13,700 Crore </h2>Diamond merchant Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi orchestrated one of the largest frauds in Indian banking history by obtaining fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) from Punjab National Bank (PNB). These LoUs allowed them to obtain loans from foreign branches of Indian banks without providing any collateral. The scam involved over ₹13,700 crore, and Modi fled the country, causing significant reputational damage to India’s banking sector. Nirav Modi’s extradition is still pending, and Mehul Choksi remains out of India’s legal jurisdiction. The scam, however, resulted in strengthened banking regulations regarding LoUs and SWIFT transactions. <h2><keyword id="23122399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-mallya-scam" source="keywords">Vijay Mallya Scam</keyword> (2016) – ₹9,000 Crore</h2>The "King of Good Times" was living large while his airline, Kingfisher, was drowning in debt. Vijay Mallya allegedly defaulted on loans amounting to ₹9,000 crore from various banks. He fled to the UK in 2016, leaving creditors, employees, and stakeholders in financial distress. His lavish lifestyle amidst the collapse of his airline made this scandal a high-profile case. Mallya’s extradition process is ongoing, but he remains out of reach of Indian authorities. The main impact was enhanced scrutiny of loan defaults and triggered legal reforms on extradition. <h2>Saradha Chit Fund Scam (2013) – ₹2,500 Crore </h2>The Saradha Group, operating a ponzi scheme disguised as a chit fund, promised unrealistically high returns to its investors, mostly in West Bengal and Odisha. The scam collapsed, leaving over 1.7 million people, many of whom were low-income investors, without their life savings. Politicians and celebrities were also implicated in the case. While Sudipta Sen is behind bars, not all the accomplices have been held accountable. But this Ponzi scheme resulted in reform of chit funds and greater regulatory oversight on such investment schemes. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="112337071" title="Noida woman invests in stock market via an app, loses over Rs 69 lakh as it turns out to be a scam" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> <h2><keyword id="6560832" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="2g-spectrum-scam" source="Orion">2G Spectrum Scam</keyword> (2008) – ₹1,76,000 Crore </h2>The 2G spectrum allocation scandal involved the underpricing of telecom licences to select companies in exchange for bribes. Telecom minister A. Raja was at the centre of this controversy, which allegedly caused a loss of ₹1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer. The case was seen as a massive blow to public trust in India’s telecom sector and led to significant political fallout. Sadly, all key figures involved were acquitted despite the Supreme Court’s intervention and cancellation of 122 telecom licences. <h2><keyword id="455134" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-allocation-scam" source="Orion">Coal Allocation Scam</keyword> (Coalgate) (2012) – ₹1,86,000 Crore </h2>The coal allocation scam, or "Coalgate," involved the illegal allocation of coal blocks to private companies between 2004 and 2009. The CAG of India estimated a loss of ₹1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer due to non-competitive bidding. Many high-profile politicians and industrialists were implicated, making this one of the largest political scandals in India. While some officials faced legal consequences, many key players were not prosecuted. But it did trigger policy reforms in the allocation of natural resources. <h2>DHFL Scam (2019) – ₹34,615 Crore </h2>Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL) was accused of syphoning off over ₹34,000 crore through a series of shell companies and fraudulent loans. Investigations revealed that the promoters used these funds for personal enrichment and illegal political donations. The case came to light after an investigation by investigative journalists and was later confirmed by a report from KPMG. The case is ongoing, and the main accused are in custody. For now, regulations governing non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) have been strengthened. <h2>Yes Bank Crisis (2020) – ₹3,788 Crore </h2>Yes Bank, under its founder <keyword id="19899935" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rana-kapoor" source="keywords">Rana Kapoor</keyword>, was involved in questionable lending practices. The bank made high-risk loans to companies already in financial trouble, which eventually turned into non-performing assets (NPAs). Kapoor was arrested, and the Reserve Bank of India had to step in to stabilise the bank. The case highlighted serious lapses in corporate governance and risk management. As of now, Rana Kapoor is facing trial, and legal proceedings are active. The RBI has also introduced new measures to monitor the health of banks more rigorously. <h2>Commonwealth Games Scam (2010) – ₹70,000 Crore </h2>The 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi were overshadowed by corruption allegations involving inflated contracts and kickbacks. <keyword id="23122398" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suresh-kalmadi" source="keywords">Suresh Kalmadi</keyword>, the head of the organising committee, was arrested for awarding contracts at exorbitant rates. The estimated loss to the exchequer was around ₹70,000 crore. This scam tarnished India’s image on the global stage. Kalmadi was arrested but the case has not resulted in major convictions or recoveries, except for stricter oversight on large public projects and international event planning. These scams not only caused financial damage but also eroded public trust in India’s institutions. Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story is streaming on SonyLIV— Here's what the infamous scam was all about

<ul><li>StudioNEXT that produced one of the most popular Indian web series last year, <keyword id="10079277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scam-1992" source="Orion">Scam 1992</keyword>, is now getting ready to launch its next offering, <keyword id="97974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="whistleblower" source="Orion">Whistleblower</keyword>.</li><li>We speak to <keyword id="2067078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indranil-chakraborty" source="Orion">Indranil Chakraborty</keyword>, Head StudioNEXT who takes us behind the scenes of these shows and what have worked in their favour. He also tells us what we can expect from StudioNEXT in the next few months.</li></ul>The Over-the-top (<keyword id="1245953" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ott" source="Orion">OTT</keyword>) space had been growing at a healthy pace even before we were hit by the pandemic. But it was during the lockdown that the OTT industry had its watershed moment. People discovered that the OTT platforms opened up the world for them, with content that went beyond boundaries. Great content from across the world kept us hooked, making the lockdown just a tad bit easier to bear. It also put the responsibility on content production houses to create clutter-breaking content because differentiation is what will help platforms stand out in the space which is getting cluttered fast. Last year, one of the biggest web series hits, Scam 1992, came from the stable of StudioNEXT, an independent business unit of <keyword id="3186877" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sony-pictures-networks-india" source="Orion">Sony Pictures Networks India</keyword> (SPN), and <keyword id="1322450" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="applause-entertainment" source="Orion">Applause Entertainment</keyword>. It is also the content production house responsible for <keyword id="17940" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kaun-banega-crorepati" source="Orion">Kaun Banega Crorepati</keyword>. When the division was set up around 2.5 years back, the aim was to function as a content creator for SPN media business as well as for other channels, networks and OTT players within India and globally. The goal was to produce new IPs whilst leveraging the existing ones under SPN media. On the occasion of the launch of StudioNEXT’s latest series, Whistleblower, we caught up with Indranil Chakraborty, Head StudioNEXT, to take a look back at the production house’s journey and to understand a few factors that have helped the company create content that has worked for viewers. The journey so far When SPN had set up the division, the destination hadn’t been written in stone. The aim was to create a flexible division, shared Chakraborty. “Having said that, we’ve had a fantastic journey so far. We have produced over 15 shows in the last 2.5 years across various languages. We began with KBC, our first web series, Scam 1992 has now been voted as the best web series to be produced in India so far. However, when we began our journey, we were clear that we wanted to create entertainment shows with a purpose for both TV and Digital. Our motto was to create good entertainment content and something with a purpose. We realized that there's a gap between a production house or studio which focuses on such shows and content,” explained Chakraborty. The company has also been especially focussed on collaboration, especially with content creators. On the TV side, it is experimenting with a few formats across languages. For a web series, it is collaborating with a whole lot of known as well as lesser known talents. “As of now we are working on around 10 shows. And from now till December next year, we have a mandate to deliver at least 6 shows. If we can do that, I believe we will be one of the biggest production houses for the digital ecosystem of the country. I can't think of many production houses which can deliver 6 shows in a year, and that too of such scale. Going forward, we want to do things that we are doing at a multiplied rate,” he added. Earlier this year, StudioNEXT also announced it will be collaborating with Venture Catalysts as the startup ecosystem advisor for the very first edition of <keyword id="1417364" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank" source="Orion">Shark Tank</keyword> India which Chakraborty feels is one of the major highlights for the company, along with producing KBC in Kashmir and the reception that Scam 1992 received. Indianizing successful international content With the production of Shark Tank, is the content house considering Indianizing more such successful international IPs? “We associated with Venture Catalyst because they had great domain knowledge and they are known in that space and this partnership helped us a lot. Talking about more such formats, we are exploring a few game formats along with a few other things, but right now, our focus is on making Shark Tank a success. We want to see how this does, if it goes into multiple seasons and has the potential to be done in multiple languages too. So right now, we are concentrating on growing deeper inside the shows we are already doing, rather than laterally expanding ourselves,” he shared. The content India wants to consume The last year has shown that Indians are hungry for good content. Series like Scam 1992 have won the internet and people are on the lookout for such content. On what he feels works for an Indian audience, Chakraborty said, “While I don’t know the exact numbers, viewership has been on a steady rise. In fact, in the content industry, there is more demand today than supply. But I feel if a story is honest, sincere and has integrity, it will work for the consumers. We have realized that the audience likes to discover different people, places, nuances and cultures and that's an important element in our shows. People are wanting to learn something from watching a show, a discovery of sorts and that's something we are trying to give them with our content.” With more and more platforms racing each other to produce and license better content, is it challenging to come up with clutter-breaking ideas? “I don’t believe the space is cluttered yet because there are too many stories to be told and we have just begun on this journey. There are many genres like romance, family drama etc that we are still exploring. I really feel it's a very exciting time for creators and writers,” he said. Indians are hungry for good content and OTT platforms have been constantly trying to up their games because it is only strong content that will help them break the clutter and make consumers choose one platform over the other. The 4-year-old Applause Entertainment, a content studio that is part of the <keyword id="44373" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aditya-birla-group" source="Orion">Aditya Birla Group</keyword>, has been a frontrunner for coming up with content that has been noticed and appreciated. Be it shows like Criminal Justice or Scam 1992, Applause has come up with content that has stood out. While so far, the studio’s focus has been original series, popular book and international format adaptations like Criminal Justice, <keyword id="57659" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hostages" source="Orion">Hostages</keyword>, it has recently partnered with <keyword id="173109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amar-chitra-katha" source="Orion">Amar Chitra Katha</keyword>, a publisher that has been our primary gateway to Indian mythological stories. And with this partnership, Applause Entertainment will mark its foray into animation. Meanwhile, the company is also looking at further expanding its offering with documentaries and small to mid budget films. Industry veteran Sameer Nair, who was the man responsible for giving us Kaun Banega Crorepati , is at the helm of affairs at Applause Entertainment, and he has his plate full at the moment. He is currently focusing on bringing bigger, more impactful content to your screens. In a recent chat, he told us more about the Amar Chitra Katha partnership, his expectations from the Indian content space and his plans for Applause Entertainment. Excerpts: Q)Your partnership with Amar Chitra Katha marks your foray into animation. What will this partnership entail? ACK is a treasured Indian brand that boasts 400+ stories and comics. Generations of Indians have grown up reading these stories. Now with this partnership, we want to both bring alive these characters in high quality animated episodes for the local audience, as well as take our proud Indian culture to global audiences. We plan to work with quality animation partners and storytellers to help us reimagine these iconic tales for the 21st century. Q)Applause has had a lot of success in terms of the content you have been produced in the past few years. Why was this a good time to explore animation? Applause is a Content and IP Creation Studio. We are storytellers, and we want to tell stories for every kind of audience. Different stories work best in different formats so as a studio, we have ensured that we produce content in the format that best suits the idea, whether drama, documentary, unscripted, film, animation or gaming. Q)Applause is 4 years old but 1.5 years out of that, we have lived/living through a pandemic. What kind of impact did it have on your business? The pandemic affected us like it did everyone else. Productions were stalled, theatres were shut, work from home became the norm. But consumption of content online exploded exponentially. Audiences adopted the OTT services and began to consume content across languages and borders. They accepted new forms of storytelling and created a host of new stars. The script became the hero supported by an ensemble of fine actors and directors. We had a pretty fortunate 2020, and 2021 so far, having released over 15 drama series across platforms, including the award winning Scam 1992 and Criminal Justice S2, to name a few. Q)What have some of your key learnings from these last 1.5 years been? Our key learning has been in a way a validation of our original premise; that we should obsessively focus on quality storytelling and carefully listen to what our consumers are saying, feeling, doing. That way we will be able to anticipate and create for the gigantic streaming market that is exploding in India and all over the world. Q)India's OTT industry is booming. People are hungry for bigger and better content. How are you as a production house equipped to meet that demand, and what makes Applause different from other content production houses? We continue to aggressively invest in incubation and development from an early stage. The audience appetite for quality content will only increase; that’s the key word – quality – and variety and diversity. Our learnings from the past 4 years have also helped us improve on our creative and commercial algorithms, and now allows us to place bigger bets with talent and scale. Our key differentiator from other studios remains our ‘risk-reward’ philosophy that sees us invest upfront in content creation, to be licensed to platform partners later. Q)Having your content on global OTT platforms also means the world is opening up for the content. From a quality perspective, where does India stand in the global scheme of things? Can we have content that goes beyond geographies and finds relevance across the world, something on the lines of Money Heist/Game of Thrones? I think the quality of Indian Content is constantly improving. That being said, as the market expands, streaming content will be distinctively divided into a massy AVOD offering and more premium SVOD fare. All content is created for a primary audience; sometimes, some of that content transcends languages and geographies to resonate with a global audience. Obviously, over the years, Hollywood has built this powerful franchise of content that is designed for worldwide audiences, but I think content from other countries will also gradually gain universal acceptance. For example, there was a phase when Chinese and Hong Kong Kungfu movies had become quite the rage. Now Korean drama series and KPop have broken out. It will be no different for India. Q)Going forward, what will your key areas of focus be? Where will your next phase of growth come from? Our next phase of growth will come from bigger series, movies, language expansion, global collaborations and animation. Q)How important is regional content for Applause? We don’t quite call it ‘regional’ content; for us it remains telling high quality stories in languages beyond our present Hindi/Hinglish slate. The streaming world is increasingly becoming a world without borders and there is growing acceptance for content without borders. This unfolding scenario is also setting the stage for content from India to resonate with audiences all over the world, and not just Indians.

The heroes of today now have to look like the audience, and not like Greek gods or goddesses who descended from the heavens. “People have realized it after the success of RRR and Pushpa. But <keyword id="95495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jr-ntr" source="Orion">Jr NTR</keyword> and <keyword id="17473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="allu-arjun" source="Orion">Allu Arjun</keyword> have always been popular with their dubbed movies being watched in the hinterlands. I was told by a person outside the industry that heroes like them can be found anywhere in Haryana and Bihar,” Bajpayee said, speaking at a panel discussion organized by Zee5 Global. The actor who completes 20 years in the industry this year, reminisced about times when movies were heavily aspirational, shot abroad etc. Actor <keyword id="6359106" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nawazuddin-siddiqui" source="Orion">Nawazuddin Siddiqui</keyword> had also addressed this issue in the past, refusing to accept that he had ‘unconventional looks’, claiming that 80% of India looks like him. “That’s true. Most of the country looks like Nawaz and me. I was once offered a movie character who lived in New York, I refused saying, I look nothing like them. Incidentally Beevi enrolled herself as an advocate in 1950 and began her career in the lower judiciary in Kerala. She was promoted as the Sub-ordinate Judge in 1968, as the Chief <keyword id="169412" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="judicial-magistrate" source="Orion">Judicial Magistrate</keyword> in 1972 and as District and Sessions Judge in 1974. Beevi was further appointed the Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in January 1980 before being elevated to the <keyword id="6355392" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="high-court" source="Orion">High Court</keyword> as a Judge on August 4, 1983. Beevi became permanent Judge of the High Court on May 14, 1984. Beevi later went on to become the Governor of Tamil Nadu on January 25, 1997 and she quit in 2001 following a decision of the Union Government recommending to the President to recall her. The unit called Lintas C:EX Entertainment will create Content &amp; IP that entertains and engages. It has ambitions to develop, create, produce and distribute distinct forms of curated and original content cutting across genres, languages and formats. Not only will the unit create original content for various streaming platforms, it will also work with brand partners to create and distribute ‘content for &amp; by brands’. Lintas C:EX Entertainment will also help brands identify and participate in relevant content-led marketing opportunities. India has witnessed tectonic shifts in the areas of digital adoption. The pandemic has had a somewhat permanent impact on the way content and entertainment is consumed. The Media and Entertainment industry in India is expected to grow to USD 55 billion by 2025 at a CAGR of about 10%. Additionally, Indians are becoming data guzzlers, with data consumption growing from just 700 mb a month to over 11 GB - with content and entertainment getting the largest share of the pie. To lead the Entertainment business unit at Lintas C:EX, Yogesh Manwani, a seasoned M&amp;E specialist has been appointed as President. Manwani comes with a rich and diversified experience of over 2 decades across different facets of the Media &amp; Entertainment business having worked in organizations such as Star, ZEE5, and most recently, Applause Entertainment as Head Revenue &amp; Marketing. He was involved in multiple premium drama series like Scam 1992, Criminal Justice, Hostages, Undekhi, Avrodh, Mind The Malhotras, Bhaukaal, Chakravyuh and Call My Agent to name a few.
