While the bank will have a majority stake in the proposed venture, according to its <a href="https://www.hitachi.com/New/cnews/month/2018/10/181029c.html">press release</a>, Hitachi is planning to invest 26% in its subsidiary SBI Payment Services. Both parties will now be proceed to apply for regulatory approvals. In India, SBI's customer base expands to nearly <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/finance/sbi-hitachi-form-jv-to-boost-digital-payments-card-acceptance-platforms-118102900350_1.html">420 million</a> people and is the largest merchant acquirer in the market in terms of terminals through its subsidiary, SBI Payment. So far it has managed to deploy <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/sbi-to-sell-26-stake-in-arm-to-form-payments-joint-venture-with-hitachi/1365923/">1.96 million</a> merchant payment acceptance touch points across the country. But, looking to shift that burden, SBI has initially shortlisted <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/finance/sbi-hitachi-form-jv-to-boost-digital-payments-card-acceptance-platforms-118102900350_1.html">three companies</a> for the joint venture — Hitachi, Worldline and First Data Corporation. Whichever company got shortlisted would then be in-charge of deploying credit card swipe machines. According to SBI’s annual report for the FY18, SBI Payment Services’ total balance sheet equity, including surplus and reserves, was reported to be <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/sbi-to-sell-26-stake-in-arm-to-form-payments-joint-venture-with-hitachi/1365923/">₹38 million</a> while the total balance sheet assets were at<a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/sbi-to-sell-26-stake-in-arm-to-form-payments-joint-venture-with-hitachi/1365923/"> ₹56 million</a>. The joint venture blends the distribution network of SBI with Hitachi’s technology and services including big data, artificial intelligence, analysis and digital payments. The venture will deliver payment services to customers and merchants with Quick Response (QR) code acceptance, Unified Payment Interface (UPI), mass transit sector and e-commerce businesses. Rajnish Kumar, the Chairman of SBI, said that the penetration of payment acceptance infrastructure is still low, at <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/finance/sbi-hitachi-form-jv-to-boost-digital-payments-card-acceptance-platforms-118102900350_1.html">2500 Point of Sale (PoS) per million</a>. And with the new joint venture, the bank is hoping the numbers will rise. What's in it for Hitachi? Hitachi is all set to expand its footprint in the Indian market by contributing to the development of digital payments services’ business via digital payments platform in order to ensure quality and better convenience. Hitachi manages over <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/finance/sbi-hitachi-form-jv-to-boost-digital-payments-card-acceptance-platforms-118102900350_1.html">70%</a> of SBI’s current network and this decision to create a joint venture is only going to strengthen the partnership. Hitachi Payments manages over<a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/finance/sbi-hitachi-form-jv-to-boost-digital-payments-card-acceptance-platforms-118102900350_1.html"> 55,000 ATMs</a> in India and has been providing deployment, management services and handling SBI’s digital acceptance payment network since 2011.

This is a good deal for the state-owned lender. It is purchasing the loans at very attractive rates given that NBFCs are struggling amid the potential default of <keyword id="6357293" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ILFS">IL&amp;FS</keyword> and its subsidiaries, which has sparked a market meltdown and fears of a liquidity crisis. As a result of the crisis, NBFCs are unable to raise short-term funds from debt markets at feasible interest rates. This is a huge problem given that these institutions are important sources of funding for <keyword id="17408" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="infrastructure">infrastructure</keyword> and housing projects as well as the MSME sector. More importantly, small businesses count on loans from NBFCs ahead of the festive sales season, which is scheduled to start this week. A Delhi consumer forum has directed the <keyword id="13222" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sbi" source="Orion">SBI</keyword> Cards &amp; Payments Services Pvt. Ltd. to pay Rs 2 lakh to a person here for sending him bill even after his card's expiry and blacklisting him for non-payment of the charges. The New Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum comprising its president Monika A Srivastava and members Kiran Kausal and Umesh Kumar Tyagi directed the company to pay the amount to M J Anthony, a former journalist, for "deficiency in providing services". The forum noted that the company had blacklisted him in the CIBIL system of the wilful defaulters maintained by the RBI, which resulted in the rejection of his applications for credit cards from another bank where he had maintained regular account for nearly two decades. "This Commission is of the view that the SBI Cards &amp; Payments Services Pvt. Ltd. has been deficient in providing services to the complainant and though the damage/loss occasioned to the complainant in terms of credit rating cannot be measured in terms of money yet punitive damage ought to be awarded against OP (opposite party) therefore, OP is directed to compensate the complainant by paying a sum of Rs 2 lakh as compensation within two months from the date of this order failing which the sum payable would be Rs 3 lakh," the forum said. The forum passed the order on May 20 on Anthony's complaint seeking compensation, claiming that he had requested the company to cancel his card in April 2016 much before its expiry and not to renew it. He did not use the card for any transaction after April 9, 2016 and had destroyed the card according to rules, he said, adding that no payment was due at that time on the card. In September, the complainant received a letter from the company about the cancellation of his card, however, the company continued to send bills relating to the card ignoring his protest e-mails, he said. The bills were to the tune of Rs 2,946 by May 18, 2017 inclusive of late payment charges and penalty, he said. He stated that in the same letter, the company had warned him to pay the bill otherwise it would "have adverse impact on the credit history as maintained by the credit Bureau and may hamper future credit requirement". The company further blacklisted him in the CIBIL system of the wilful defaulters maintained by RBI and he had trouble in getting loans or credit card. During the argument, the company had denied the allegations. SBI penalised for sending bills to man despite credit card's expiry

According to a notification by the Department of Personnel &amp; Training, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on August 6 approved the proposal of the Department of Financial Services for the appointment of <keyword id="22230591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Challa-Sreenivasulu-Setty" source="keywords">Challa Sreenivasulu Setty</keyword> as chairman of SBI. The ACC has approved the appointment of Setty, 59, the current Managing Director (MD) of SBI as the new Chairman of the country's biggest lender, for a period of three years, effective from the date he assumes office, on or after August 28, 2024. The government order states, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Department of Financial Services for the appointment of Shri Challa Sreenivasulu Setty (DOB: 26.09.1965), Managing Director (MD), State Bank of India (SBI) as Chairman, SBI for a period of three (03) years w.e.f. the date of assumption of charge of the office, on or after 28.08.2024." Additionally, Rana Ashutosh Kumar Singh, the current Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of SBI, has been appointed as the new Managing Director. His appointment will take effect from the date he assumes office. The government order read, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Department of Financial Services for appointment of Shri Rana Ashutosh Kumar Singh, Deputy Managing Director (DMD), State Bank of India (SBI) as Managing Director (MD) in SBI with effect from the date of assumption of office." According to SBI, Challa Sreenivasulu Setty joined the Board of SBI as Managing Director in January 2020 and currently oversees International Banking, Global Markets, and Technology wings of the Bank. He has previously headed the Retail &amp; Digital Banking vertical and various task forces/committees formed by the Government of India. Setty holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers. He began his career with SBI in 1988 as a Probationary Officer. Over his three-decade-long career, he has gained rich experience in corporate credit, retail, digital, and international banking, as well as banking in developed markets. <ul><li>Rajnish Kumar, the chairman of <keyword id="6354731" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-bank-of-india">State Bank of India</keyword> (SBI) said that additional mergers with smaller banks would give the bank <keyword id="67392" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Monopoly">monopoly</keyword> powers. </li><li>Kumar’s statement comes a few days after the Indian government ordered the <keyword id="42411" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Merger">merger</keyword> of Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank in lieu of further mergers of state-owned banks. </li><li>In April 2017, SBI began the process of merging with five of its subsidiaries- State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Hyderabad as well as Bharatiya Mahila Bank. </li></ul>Rajnish Kumar, the chairman of State Bank of India (SBI) has categorically ruled out any absorption of smaller banks by SBI in the short term. SBI is India’s largest bank, holding a little under a quarter of all the assets in the banking system, which begs the question: how much room does it have for economies of scale from mergers? While Kumar agreed that there were far too many public sector banks in India and that they required <keyword id="76844" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Consolidation">consolidation</keyword> for improved management and capital strength, he explained that any further acquisitions of state-owned banks by SBI would give it monopoly powers. Kumar added that SBI was still focussing on the integration of the six banks it absorbed last year, explaining that it would take around two to three years for the synergies from the merger to start manifesting themselves. In April 2017, SBI began the process of merging with five of its subsidiaries- State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Hyderabad as well as Bharatiya Mahila Bank. While the merger proved to be a drag on SBI’s profitability and added to its already-high level of non-performing loans and provisioning requirements, Kumar said <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/money-and-banking/sbi-to-be-back-in-black-from-sept-quarter-says-chairman/article24773447.ece">last month</a> that he expected the bank to report a profit in the quarter ending September. Separately, Kumar said that SBI was on course to resolve around 7 to 8 stressed power accounts before the expiration of the Supreme Court’s grace period on 11 November. The resolution of around ₹170 billion worth of non-performing loans will come as a significant relief to the bank, which currently holds nearly 20% of all the bad loans in India’s banking sector.

New Delhi, Dec 16 () India has secured a USD 277 million (about Rs 1,900 crore) loan from Germany to establish an energy-efficient housing programme in the country.
 A loan agreement has been signed between State Bank of India (SBI) and German development bank KfW for USD 277 million to establish an energy-efficient housing programme in India, SBI said in a release.
 The financial cooperation pact has been signed in October between the Government of India and the Government of Germany.
 The programme shall be part of the Indo-German Development Co-operation, guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, SBI said.
 "Under the programme, both builders and homebuyers shall be financed for developing/purchasing energy-efficient residential projects that achieve at least 25 per cent energy savings in comparison to standard reference buildings.
 "Hence, this programme will contribute to India's policy framework towards energy conservation in the residential building sector and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions," the release said.
 SBI said that in addition to this loan, KfW will also extend a grant of 1.5 million euros (about Rs 12 crore) as a technical assistance package.
 The technical assistance funds shall be used for supporting SBI in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the programme.
 Further, an investment grant of 10 million euro (Rs 791 crore) has also been provided for incentivising builders to develop housing projects that achieve significantly higher levels of energy savings vis-a-vis standard reference buildings (at least 40 per cent savings).
