Online marketplace Snapdeal has announced that <keyword id="352238" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saurabh-Bansal">Saurabh Bansal</keyword> would be taking up the role of VP and head of category management. Bansal was earlier associated with Snapdeal as VP - merchandising strategy, leading analytics and merchandise planning at Snapdeal. Before he joined Snapdeal in March 2014, he was leading strategy and new business initiatives at Jubilant Enpro, where he was responsible for many bottom line impacting innovations at leading retailers like Metro Cash &amp; Carry and Spencer's Retail Limited. 
 
In his career of 12 years, Bansal has earned experience in several fields across retail, wholesale and buying merchandise for commercial ventures. 
 
For his new role, Bansal will take charge of end to end category management, emphasising on the continued expansion of product and brand assortment on Snapdeal through strategic partnerships.

From 300 staff in 2013 <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> has expanded its workforce by more than fourfold in one year, crossing the 5,000 mark in April this year. 

	The New Delhi-based company hired extensively in technology, operations and supply chain segments. About 20 per cent of its current employees are in technology operations, where it plans to add another 1,000 in about six months to work on big data, mobile services, analytics, cloud infrastructure and web technology. 
 According to HR head <keyword id="2850599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saurabh-Nigam">Saurabh Nigam</keyword>, the main reason for Snapdeal's success is its people. And, talent acquisition is one of the areas where competition is very intense. 

	"These days, the competition is so fierce that positions have to be closed in three weeks as compared to a turnaround time of three months in other industries. The major challenge that the company faces is map onto diversity of profiles, right talent, handle sheer volume and pace when hiring," he said.
 

	The next major focus of hiring is expected in logistics - fulfillment parks under 'Snapdeal Plus'. It has around 50 fulfillment centres in 20 cities and has plans to expand the number to 75 across 30 cities this year. Snapdeal is looking to get more sellers on its platform to stock products at its fulfillment centres so that deliveries can be processed quickly. 
 It made several senior-level hirings in the past year. As much as 60-70 per cent of these were done via social media and personal referrals, said Nigam. Snapdeal has a leadership hiring team which works directly under cofounders <keyword id="219793" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kunal-Bahl">Kunal Bahl</keyword> and <keyword id="396598" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rohit-Bansal">Rohit Bansal</keyword>, as the company looks to strengthen the management with executives who can prepare it for an initial public offerings in the next two years or so informs Nigam. 

	Snapdeal is considering setting up a base in the US, in its efforts to strengthen its technology arm, hire more specialists and become the first Indian consumer Internet company to establish a presence in the world's biggest startup hub. 
 

	Internally, the company is working towards developing staff policies such as Advitya, an initiative to get mothers on break to join the workforce, hire boomerangs (people who have once worked at the company) and create a strong alumni network that is informed of Snapdeal opportunities. 
 

	As the company has expanded quickly, it is relocating to a new office in Udyog Vihar, Gurgaon, in July-August. It is spread across 4.5 lakh sq ft and can house more than 4,000 employees. 
 

	The platform, started in February 2010 by Bahl and Bansal as a daily deals platform named MoneySaver, currently has more than 1.5 lakh sellers, offering around 12 million products in more than 500 categories. The company is looking to add another 1 lakh sellers to the list this year. Snapdeal has eight offices in Delhi, one in Bengaluru and regional offices in Chennai, Surat, Kolkata and other smaller cities.

Speaking about this acquisition, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Rohit+Bansal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Rohit Bansal</a>, Co-Founder, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Snapdeal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Snapdeal</a> said, “The Targeting Mantra team comes with valuable experience in driving superior customer experience through <keyword id="294572" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="machine-learning">machine learning</keyword>.” 
 
TargetingMantra was founded by Saurabh Nangia and Rahul Singh in March 2013, and has offices in Palo Alto and Gurgaon. The company offers a platform to manage customer life-cycle through personalization, targeting and big data analytics. It deals in intuitive product discovery, recommendations and channel selection.

Snapdeal acquires machine
learning solutions firm TargetingMantra

<keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, the <keyword id="1705292" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-e-commerce">Indian e-commerce</keyword> giant, has asked the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Snapdeal-doubles-the-number-of-sellers-in-one-year/articleshow/51629270.cms">sellers on its platform</a> to restrict their discounts within 70% of the maximum retail price (MRP) on most products from May 13 onwards. This move has come as it aims to tackle the increasing return of merchandise from buyers. 
 
 
The New Delhi-based firm sent out a communication to its sellers on May 9, in which it said, "We have noticed deeply discounted products often do not meet expectations, leading to increased returns and customer dissatisfaction. To improve customer experience, you would not be able to list a new product or update the price of a listed product with more than 70% discount on MRP."

In the recent past, sellers on all leading marketplaces, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Snapdeal-appoints-former-HUL-employee-as-VP-Marketing/articleshow/52000299.cms">Snapdeal</a>, complaint of an increase in the return of products, mainly because of the "no questions asked" return policy that these e-commerce companies follow. While for some sellers this is a "good move" given that offering huge discounts make customers question the authenticity of the products, there are some who see it as a roadblock in clearing piled up inventory.

Just two months after slashing 200 jobs, online food-ordering startup <keyword id="3601251" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TinyOwl">TinyOwl</keyword> is at it again. It has decided to lay off 112 employees more in its second round of staff cuts in a bid to minimize expenses. This will bring down the company's total employee count from 1,000 to nearly 650 now. The decision comes in the wake of a slowing fundraising market in India. <keyword id="1744427" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food-startups">Food startups</keyword> are increasingly looking to cut costs in order to run a sustainable model. 

	In September, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TinyOwl">TinyOwl </a>laid off employees, primarily from its sales and delivery teams. This time it will be largely from sales teams across 4 cities - Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune. 
 "It was a tough decision," cofounder and chief executive <keyword id="2626608" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Harshvardhan-Mandad">Harshvardhan Mandad</keyword> told ET. "Going forward, our operations will have to be more tech-oriented because margins are thin in the food business as compared to other online marketplaces." 

	The company said it is making processing of orders and delivery more "automated" in Mumbai and Bengaluru. 
 The company in February raised Rs 100 crore in a funding round led by Matrix Partners, with <keyword id="122716" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sequoia-Capital">Sequoia Capital</keyword> and Nexus Venture Partners participating. TinyOwl also counts <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Snapdeal+">Snapdeal </a>founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal as investors. 
 

	It was founded in 2014 by IIT-Bombay graduates Mandad, Gaurav Choudhary, Saurabh Goyal, Shikhar Paliwal and Tanuj Khandelwal.
