Kolkata: Protesting junior doctors in West Bengal defied a <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> order, asking them to resume work by 5 pm on Tuesday, and said they would continue with their protest till their demands were fulfilled and the rape and murder victim of the <keyword id="22743761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rg-kar" source="keywords">RG Kar</keyword> Hospital was given justice. As the medicos continued to protest for the 32nd day on Tuesday, demanding the removal of the <keyword id="20076432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kolkata-police" source="keywords">Kolkata police</keyword> commissioner and several top <keyword id="20050159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-health-department" source="keywords">state health department</keyword> officials, the state government said Chief Minister <keyword id="19909056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mamata-banerjee" source="keywords">Mamata Banerjee</keyword> has written to the protesters, inviting them for a meeting at the secretariat to resolve the impasse over the incident. However, the protesting doctors said the mail for the meeting was from the state health secretary, whose resignation they were seeking, and termed it as "insulting". They also said that restricting the number of representatives to attend the meeting to 10 was "humiliating". The top court on Monday directed the protesting resident doctors to resume work by 5 PM on Tuesday, observing that if "there is continued abstention from work, there may be a likelihood of adverse action". Meanwhile, the RG Kar hospital authorities issued notices to 51 doctors, including to senior residents and professors, accusing them of fostering intimidation and disrupting the institution's democratic atmosphere, and summoned them to an inquiry committee on September 11. Asserting that their demands were not met, the protesting doctors defied the apex court's order and said they would continue with their 'cease work' till their demands were fulfilled and the rape and murder victim of the RG Kar Hospital was given justice. "We had asked the state government to remove the Kolkata police commissioner, health secretary, director of health services, and the director of medical education by 5 pm (Tuesday). We are open to discussion," one of the protesting doctors said. The junior doctors began their strike on August 9, hours after the body of the female trainee was found in the seminar room of the hospital. Since then, the protest has escalated, leading to disruptions in healthcare services at state-run hospitals across West Bengal. The state government claimed in the Supreme Court that the strike has resulted in the deaths of 23 patients and has severely impacted the healthcare delivery mechanism. During the day, the protesting doctors marched to 'Swasthya Bhavan' - the headquarters of the health department in Salt Lake - and staged a sit-in outside the office building to press for their demand. The protesters carried brooms and a model human brain while marching towards 'Swasthya Bhavan' in a symbolic bid to "clean up" the state health sector and make the top brass "think" about the plight of the doctors. Taking exception to the "language of the email", the agitating junior medics rejected the CM's invitation for talks at the state secretariat to resolve the impasse over the RG Kar hospital issue. "The language of the communication is not only disrespectful to us doctors, it's downright insensitive. We find no reason to reply to this mail," Dr Debasish Halder, a leader of the protesting doctors who organised a sit-in before the state health department headquarters at 'Swasthya Bhavan' in Salt Lake, said. "Our protests and our 'cease work' will continue," he asserted, indicating yet another night-long sit-in before the state health headquarters. Addressing the media shortly after 7.30 pm from 'Nabanna', Bengal's Minister of State for Health, Chandrima Bhattacharya, claimed that the chief minister had taken a "positive approach" by extending her olive branch to the agitating medics. "The email was sent to the official ID of the Junior Doctors' Front at around 6.10 pm. The chief minister was waiting for the doctors' delegation to come for the meeting. She left her office at 7.30 pm since there was no response from the protesters," Bhattacharya said. In a late evening development, the North Bengal Medical College in Siliguri issued a notification, expelling five third-year MBBS students for allegedly threatening officials and other students. "They are also required to vacate the hostel and leave the medical college premises," it said. Also on Tuesday, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was sent to judicial custody till September 23 by a special CBI court in connection with a financial irregularities case. His security personnel Afsar Ali, medical equipment vendor Biplab Singha, and pharmacy shop owner Suman Hazara, were also remanded to judicial custody until September 23. The accused were previously in CBI custody for eight days, but the investigators did not seek an extension of their remand. "The CBI has already secured large amounts of digital evidence on the alleged crime. We need time to analyse that evidence. We do not need the accused in police custody immediately, but we may seek their custody again later if required," the agency's counsel stated in court. Chaotic scenes unfolded at the Alipore Court premises when Ghosh and the others were produced before the judge. Women lawyers shouted slogans against Ghosh and attempted to block the courtroom exit. They also demanded that the accused "be hanged" for their alleged involvement in abetting the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. The police sought the help of the central paramilitary forces to control the situation.

"A comprehensive joint meeting was conducted by the representatives of Resident Doctor's Associations, including <keyword id="19955395" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIIMS-Delhi" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="AIIMS Delhi" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="AIIMS Delhi">AIIMS Delhi</keyword>, SJH, MAMC... After extensive discussions, it was unanimously decided that all RDAs across Delhi will conduct a joint protest march on August 16, 2024, from 2 PM at Nirman Bhavan, New Delhi," per the statement released from Resident Doctor's Associations, AIIMS. The Delhi Medical Association (DMA) also held an emergency meeting to discuss the rape-murder incident on Thursday and the association has decided to hold a <keyword id="20704389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="candle-march" source="keywords">candle march</keyword> at India Gate at 5 PM on Friday. Speaking on the issue, DMA President-elect Dr Girish Tyagi said, "This is a very shameful incident. The Delhi Medical Association stands with the victim and her family. A candle march will be taken out at India Gate tomorrow at 5 pm. A strike has been called from 6 am on August 17 to 6 am the next day, that is, for 24 hours. We are with the resident doctors as they are not getting the proper working conditions... In the next phase of the strike, emergency services will also be included in it." Speaking on the same, President, DMA Dr Alok Bhandari, said, "Today we had an emergency meeting... Everyone was angry and very pained by what happened to one of our sisters and daughters in Kolkata. The Delhi Medical Association has called for a nationwide strike against this incident. If the government still does not wake up and does not find a permanent solution to these problems, then people associated with the medical profession will have to come on the streets. With this demand, we have called for a strike for 24 hours from Saturday to Sunday... After all, this is a public issue... There cannot be a more shameful thing for this country than this." On Thursday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine starting from 6 am on Saturday, August 17 to 6 am on Sunday, August 18. Meanwhile, people from the Bengali film and television industry also joined protesting doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Thursday. Speaking to ANI, actress Alivia Sarkar said, "We are speechless and we want justice and a proper solution. This is not the thing that should happen, it's not a humane thing... I think everybody is thinking about a solution. This movement has shaken the country and everyone is talking about it, and all want justice." On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, which led to nationwide strikes and protests by the medical fraternity. Kolkata rape-murder case: Resident Doctors' Associations to hold protest march in Delhi

The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the life imprisonment of P. Rajagopal, the owner of south Indian hotel chain <keyword id="188781" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saravana-Bhavan">Saravana Bhavan</keyword>, for murdering an employee in October 2001 so as to marry his wife. A bench headed by Justice N.V. Ramana gave Rajagopal time till July 7 to surrender. The ruling comes on the Madras High Court order upholding his life imprisonment. The High Court had enhanced the 10-year sentence given by a trial court. When contacted, Rajagopal's son P.R. Shivakumar told IANS: "I just got an SMS about the verdict. I have to get more details." The hugely popular hotel chain has outlets within and outside India and is now managed by Shivakumar. The South Indian restaurant chain, Saravana Bhavan has 33 outposts in India and 47 around the world. <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._Rajagopal_%28businessman%29">P. Rajagopal</a>, was sentenced to life in prison in India in 2009 on charges of murdering his employee, Prince Shantakumar, so as to marry his wife. However, India's highest court had granted him a bail in May 2009, when the lawyer of the accused claimed that Rajagopal needed to go through medical treatment for paralysis, reported One India News. <ul><li>71-year old P Rajagopal who founded Saravana Bhavan is set to begin his life sentence on Sunday.</li><li>The founder of Saravana Bhavan has been held guilty of murdering the husband of a woman he obsessed over.</li><li>Before his conviction, Rajagopal's journey from being a grocer in 1981 to the owner of franchise that spread across the world, was an inspiration for many entrepreneurs in India.</li></ul>In the summer of 2015, while most restaurants in the city of Paris had their staff standing outside wooing people, Saravana Bhavan near the station in Saint-Denis had a waiting time of 45 minutes. Other Indian and Asian restaurants, including the one very next to it, was empty in the evening while people chose to wait for their seat inside Saravana Bhavan. There have been similar anecdotes across many cities from New Delhi to New York to Stockholm where the restaurant operates in. A New York Times feature in 2014 appropriately titled <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/11/magazine/masala-dosa-to-die-for.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">'Masala Dosa to die for'</a> captured the life of the son of an onion farmer, P Rajagopal, who went from being an inspiring entrepreneur who broke the shackles of caste and perception to build a restaurant chain, Saravana Bhavan, which went on to be a rage for vegetarian delicacies around the world, to a convict awaiting his life sentence now. The 71-year old Rajagopal started out as a grocer in 1981 when he decided to start a vegetarian restaurant in the south Indian city of Chennai. He was breaking into a domain that was at that time the fiefdom of upper castes. He decided to invest in a restaurant chain in an under-developed economy where barely anyone could afford to eat out regularly. He was at a disadvantage in every possible way -- social, financial, economic rationale-- but the grocer beat all odds to become a millionaire with outlets in over 33 cities outside India. Passion and obsession In the early 2000s, Rajagopal took a liking to the daughter of an employee. He obsessed over the woman who was already married and rejected his advances. Rajagopal has been held guilty of murdering her husband after threats, beatings and exorcisms failed. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2004 and later it was increased to life sentence after he was convicted of murder. The Supreme Court upheld the verdict earlier this year. He is meant to surrender by July 7 and spend the rest of his life behind bars. "Rajagopal is an example of how you can really come up in the society through hard work and thinking out of the box," GC Shekhar, a Chennai-based journalist, told the AFP. "What led to his downfall was his weakness for women and his belief that he was so powerful that he could get somebody murdered and get away with it." Other controversies Income Tax department raided the headquarters of the chain in Chennai in January 2019 following complaints of alleged tax evasion. "We believe these groups suppress large-scale income from their domestic operations. They have not disclosed income generated in their overseas branches over the last several years.
