Filmmaker <keyword id="56295" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pradeep-sarkar" source="Orion">Pradeep Sarkar</keyword>, best known for the movie "<keyword id="14522" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Parineeta" source="Orion">Parineeta</keyword>", passed away at a hospital early on Friday, his wife Panchali said. He was 67. The director was admitted to the ICU of Lilavati hospital in suburban Bandra following a fever. "He passed away between 3.10 am and 3.30 am at Lilavati hospital," his wife told PTI. He had viral fever on March 22. After administering some medicines his fever subsided but not completely. So he was rushed to the hospital, she said. "By the time we reached the hospital, his vitals started dropping. He was put on a ventilator in the ICU and was diagnosed with pneumonia. The infection attacked his lungs," the director's wife said. "According to doctors, he had many comorbidities which weakened his immunity. His blood pressure was fluctuating. Since COVID-19 hit him in July 2022, he was quite weak," Panchali said. Sarkar made his directorial debut with "Parineeta" in 2005. Some of his other directorial ventures include "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag" (2007), "Lafangey Parindey" (2010), "Mardaani" (2014), and "Helicopter Eela" (2018). Many celebrities offered their condolences through social media. Ajay Devgn said he is unable to fathom the news about Sarkar's demise. "The news of Pradeep Sarkar's demise, 'Dada' to some of us, is still hard to digest. My deepest condolences. My prayers are with the departed and his family. RIP Dada," Devgn wrote. Filmmaker <keyword id="4684" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hansal-mehta" source="Orion">Hansal Mehta</keyword> shared a picture of the director on Twitter and wrote, "Pradeep Sarkar. Child malnutrition rates in India are extraordinarily high- among the highest in the world, with nearly one-half of all children under 3 years of age being either underweight or stunted. Indeed, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Excise-duty-in-cigarette-hiked-Tobacco-farmers-in-india-are-struggling-to-make-ends-meet/articleshow/56872791.cms">child malnutrition rates </a>are higher in India than in many countries of sub-Saharan <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword>, even though income levels are significantly higher and levels of infant and child mortality are lower in India. 
 
 
 
Pediatric malnutrition Prevalence of child malnutrition in India has remained stubbornly high even after nearly a half-century of respectable agricultural productivity growth and two decades of post-reform economic growth and prosperity in the country. Adding more support to the view that child malnutrition is weakly correlated with income is the finding that among children of mothers with 10 or more years of schooling as well as mothers from the top income quintile, around one-quarter are underweight. Even in a relatively prosperous and dynamic state like <keyword id="6354766" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>, child malnutrition rates have been stagnant over the past decade.

“Half of the children who die before five years of age have malnutrion as a cause in their pathogenesis. If we look at proportion of weight at birth, 23 per cent of children weigh less than 2.5 kg, which is below normal. This low birth weight has its reason in the womb, which is where they are malnourished already before being born. Low birth weight increases over time and so by the time they are three-years-old, half the children are malnourished. Because of poor sanitation we have widespread <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/heres-how-indepay-is-making-rural-india-cashless/articleshow/57232771.cms">faecal oral contamination</a>. Water and food sources have high degrees of contamination and it results in diarrhoea and other gastro intestinal illnesses, which increases the child mortality rate,” said renowned public health specialist and activist Dr <keyword id="43944" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binayak-Sen">Binayak Sen</keyword>. 
 
 
 
State of famine 
In 1943, three million people died in the infamous <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841">Bengal famine</a>. There was no shortage of grain in <keyword id="6356978" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengal">Bengal</keyword> at that time, yet people had nothing to eat. Interpreting the Famine of 1943,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841"> Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen </a>suggested that the reason for it was the breakdown of the social arrangement in distributing food. To put the matter in a world context, every three seconds somewhere around the world, a child dies of causes related to avoidable malnutrition. "In those three seconds, the world armaments industry spends 120,000 USD in order to keep the system responsible safely in place,” Binayak Sen told <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword>. 
 
 
 
Ignorant policies that do the most harm Skyrocketing prices of daily food items spell more woe for the people, who are already paying "too much" to survive. International Fund for Agricultural Development’s (<keyword id="1367836" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IFAD">IFAD</keyword>) Rural Poverty Report-2011 states, “While international food prices have declined since mid-2008, they are still substantially higher than prior to the price surge, and they are likely to remain at 2010 levels or higher for the next decade.” The report has suggested that about 100 million of world’s rural and urban people have to remain hungry. 
 “It will remain high, the era of cheap food is over," said <keyword id="669006" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Richard-Mahapatra">Richard Mahapatra</keyword>, managing editor of Down to <keyword id="6359982" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="earth">Earth</keyword>. "This is because productivity of agriculture is low and thus impacts production. This is the supply side issue. Also the rainfed areas that contribute a signifcant amount of foodgrain is not getting the policy focus. Even though the new second Green <keyword id="24385" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="revolution">Revolution</keyword> is aimed at that, it seems to be flawed. Now, the demand side. Demand is increasing but we don't have robust distribution mechanism. So, it creates further price rise. Also, there is huge diversion of agricultural lands to other uses. Combined with low productivity, less lands and absence of distribution mechanism, we are set for high price rise.” 
 Due to the PDS (<keyword id="89442" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Public-distribution-system">Public Distribution System</keyword>) and the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841">public wage programmes</a> starvation deaths have definitely come down, he contended. Often we call cheap food grain programmes as populist. They are indeed popular as poor find them useful and their starvation is avoided with this entitlement. 
 
 
 
Adult malnutrition 
“Roughly 33-35 per cent of the entire Indian population have a BMI below 18.5, which is indicative of calorie malnutrition. They aren't getting enough food to eat. More than one-third of India is on a chronic basis not getting proper food to eat. Low BMI is also restricting people’s immunity,” said Binayak Sen. 
 “Without addressing nutritional status, there can be no adequate development. Food Security Act does nothing for betterment of nutritional status of the poeple as such. <keyword id="250148" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Bill">The Bill</keyword> is like 'something is better than nothing'. Five kilos of wheat per person per month make two chapattis per day. With two chapatis the nutritional question isn’t answered. This terrible nutritional deficit is yielding polarization in society,” he added. 
 
Urban malnutrition 
In villages, people stay in close bond with each other, who can be approached for help in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841">times of crisis</a>. Migrating people in cities start living in slums and ghettos, where they have to live with people unknown and untrustworthy. Moreover, people fight here to make ends meet, which actually leads to self-centric attitude. 
 
Red corridor hunger 
“People who are in chronic situation and stable famine are able to withstand only because of their access to natural resources like land, water and forest," opined Binayak Sen. "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841">Access to this resources was unrestricted</a>. Designating the common properties as commodities that can be owned by corporates is restricting poeple’s right to access and in a way right to live. Any form of resistance is labelled as insurgency. First they try civil ways and then take recourse in military measures. People have to confront. Application of eminent domain needs to be questioned. Under 5th schedule, govt has to ensure people’s access to natural resources but there is not a single instances of government intervening.” 
 
“They have mapped it as red corridor but poeple’s deprivation hasn't been mapped yet," said Sen. 
 
"We need to relook at the arm forces and UAPA laws. Whole discourse in election has become restricted to attitudes to development. Development is about accessing resources. Nobody is saying there are vital issues involved. What is going to happen to the poeple whose right has been denied? State will not be thwarted in its course. There needs to be a contestaion in the level of people. They need to raise the issue.”

Agriculture contributes around 16 per cent to<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841"> India’s GDP</a>; it is coming down over the years. But still 60 per cent people depend on this. What does this mean? Is it that it is reliable as a source of livelihood or people don't have any other source thus depend on agriculture? In both the cases, shifting people out of agriculture is going to be a tough challenge. Industries or the service sectors have their own limitation and can't absorb such a huge number of people.  Now, <keyword id="6354348" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bachchan">Bachchan</keyword> has posted pictures of his outing with his grandkids-Navya and <keyword id="482561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agastya">Agastya</keyword> Nanda. Big B was in Delhi for some work and he spent some quality time with his grandkids.

 On his blog, Big B has revealed that he shot a promotional film for <keyword id="142720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nikhil-Nanda">Nikhil Nanda</keyword>'s company and his joy of being with Navya and Agastya. 
 He wrote, "My love and .. such a joy to be with the grandchildren..Goodness it was just the other day I was rushing their Mother to the <keyword id="104175" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Breach-Candy-Hospital">Breach Candy Hospital</keyword> for their deliveries and now this."

At 13, a young Neetu was married off to a mentally challenged man three times her age. The fact that her father-in-law forced himself on her made things worse. 
 
Her decision to walk out of that marriage was met with apprehension from her parents who fearing social stigma married her off a second time. 
 
And, at 14 she became mother to two twins. 
 
For any other girl, that would have been the end. However, for Neetu, this was only the beginning. 
 
Belonging to a poor family, she had to work doubly hard to support her family and she took on many jobs. She's tilled land, worked as a beautician, a maid, a shop clerk and even a self-taught tailor. 
 
"I learned to sew just by unstitching old suits and restitching them back together. I couldn't afford training. I had no money," she says. 
Neetu who only studied till class 7 always had a knack for sports- which started with her high-hurdling over her grandmother’s bushes. She was inspired by wrestling while watching the TV coverage of the international games staged in New Delhi. 
 
 
 
But, being a mother to twin sons meant that she kept aside her dream of becoming an international <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=wrestler&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">wrestler</a> for the next two-three years and focused on their needs first. 
 
She couldn’t however stay away for long. 
 
It was a chance encounter with a yoga coach that she believed changed her life. The yoga coach gave her the number of wrestling coach Ziley Singh and Neetu expressed her desire to learn wrestling despite being a mother two. 
 
Singh encouraged her, telling her that if<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mary+kom&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> Mary Kom</a> can win a medal in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=olympics&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Olympics</a> after motherhood, so could she. 
 
This sent her hopes soaring.

	 
	Neetu who took the sport seriously only when she was 17, became a national medalist in the senior category by the time she was 19. And, last year the 21-year-old represented India at the Junior World Championships in Brazil and returned with a silver medal from the National Games held in Kerala as well. 
	 
	Achieving all this at such a young age meant she needed to train with strict discipline. 
	 
	 
	 
	 For over two years, Neetu rose at 3 am, for the bumpy one hour and a half bus ride from her village Bedwa to reach to her gruelling morning workout in the city of <keyword id="49507" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="rohtak">Rohtak</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=haryana&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Haryana</a>, which is famous for its wrestling tradition. 
	 
	After practice, she would return home to do housework, undertaking another journey back in the afternoon for more drills. Once back, she would help her kids with their homework. 
	 
	Now, Neetu lives in a small room near the gym, which spares herself the long deadly commute back and forth from her village. Her new living arrangement means that she sees her twin sons only on the weekend. According to Neetu, their father and her second husband has been her saviour. 
	 
	 
	"He's given me a new life. He pulled me out of hell and brought me to heaven. I'm able to wrestle because of him. I'm away and we don't have a usual husband-wife relationship. He's made a huge sacrifice," Neetu says. 
	 Her husband Sanjay however wasn’t always supportive. When Neetu first confided in him her dream of being a <keyword id="6373668" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="wrestler">wrestler</keyword>, he thought she was crazy. But, as time went on and he saw her passion,. He lent his support and adjusted to his new role as a house-husband. He claims he learnt to do housework by watching her. 
	 
	As the moment, she practice with 25 other young women in the Chhotu Ram Stadium and Wrestling Center twice a day- four hours in the morning and three and a half hours in the afternoon, lunging and contouring her body into impossible positions. 
	 
	The same village elders who were unhappy about her entering the male-dominated akharas gave her a grand welcome last year when she returned home victorious from the National Games. 
	 
	That’s not all. Neetu is also training to qualify for this year’s World Wrestling Championships and is being supported by the Sushil4Sports Foundation, started by wrestler <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=sushil+kumar&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Sushil Kumar</a>, her biggest idol.

Currently, <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword> already has around 2,000 women in its <keyword id="52626" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="workforce">workforce</keyword>, which is less than 6% of the total 35,000. 
 
Apart from this, the company is also planning to recruit 100 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=differently-abled+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">differently-abled </a>people. <keyword id="8555" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata">Tata</keyword> Steel currently employs 106 <keyword id="54042" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Differently-abled">differently-abled</keyword> people. The hiring would be replacement hiring. 
 "Most of the <keyword id="61889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diversity">diversity</keyword> hiring would be replacement of positions currently held by men," <keyword id="3656586" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Atrayee-Sarkar">Atrayee Sarkar</keyword>, chief diversity officer at Tata Steel, told ET. 
 
“It took a year to lay out concrete plans around diversity and inclusion. Unlike other companies that talk about diversity at managerial level and at industries that have desk jobs, for Tata Steel, which is an organisation that has multi-location mining, raw material and manufacturing and bringing in diversity is more complex,” Sarkar added. 
 
"Trying to achieve the percentage in all our locations is a bigger challenge to us." The strategy for improving diversity is clear: Take more women at the entry levels. Previously, just 10-15 per cent of entry-level hires were women. Now, it wants to take this to a minimum of 30 per cent- that means, every 10 new hires at the entry level will have at least three women. "We're getting women from campuses, in the first block," Sarkar told ET. 
 The next on to-do list of Tata Steel is to increase the count of differently abled people. Tata steel is looking forward to making 50 places suitable for differently abled people. "We just brought on board '<keyword id="526803" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Enable-India">EnAble India</keyword>' (as) a partner for recruitment, infrastructure and sensitisation for the differently abled. It is their first time for a manufacturing company," Sarkar said. 
 
"The design, structure, etc., will be completely designed for the visually impaired/people with hearing impairment/physically disabled across some of our locations, the company has also worked out a '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=power+engagement%27+programme&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">power engagement' programme</a>," Sarkar further added. 
 In case a qualified spouse of an employee in a different location wants to be employed, Tata Steel will take that person on board on a contract basis under its '<keyword id="3656588" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Spouse-Retainership-programme">Spouse-Retainership' programme</keyword>. "We are also looking at our <keyword id="66901" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alumni">alumni</keyword>. People who have left us and want to come back may do so on a contract on long-term basis," she said. 
 
Tata Steel has already announced policies like work from home, paternity leave, 15 days special leave to the mother and two-three nursing breaks a day for women with babies recently.

Tata Steel plans on improving
diversity, to recruit 5,500 women and 100 differently-abled

In an emotional reunion, a 76-year-old man who left <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> and went to <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> nearly 50 years ago has met with his two siblings in the UAE's capital Abu Dhabi. <keyword id="3380092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hamza-Sarkar">Hamza Sarkar</keyword>, who is now a Pakistani citizen , met with his brother <keyword id="3380093" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TP-Mammikutty">TP Mammikutty</keyword>, 75, and sister Eyyathu, 85, both from Kerala. He flew from Karachi while Mammikutty and Eyyathu came from Kerala for the reunion in Abu Dhabi. 

	Sarkar had gone missing first time from Kerala in 1951 when he was 11 years old, Gulf News reported. 
 

	"He was fond of travelling. One day our mother sent him out to graze the cattle. He never returned," Mammikutty said. Sarkar boarded a train to Kolkata. 
 

	"From Kolkata I went to Bangladesh , which was then part of Pakistan. Later I went to Karachi," Sarkar said. 
 

	After 18 years, he returned home in 1968. 
 

	"I risked my life and slipped through the borders near Rajasthan in India. I walked for three weeks and finally took a bus to Hyderabad. I wrote a letter to my mother and she sent me money for a train ticket to Kerala," Sarkar said. 
 

	In the hope that he will stay, Sarkar's family set up a grocery shop for him but he ventured out again after nine months on the pretext of buying supplies and never returned. 
 

	"That was the last we saw him. I still remember how my mother used to keep his picture under her pillow and would cry all night," Iyyathu said. 
 

	After 48 years, Sarkar's family traced him in Karachi when his daughter Aasiya living in Pakistan and Mammikutty's Abu Dhabi-based grandson Nadirshah, 23, connected on Facebook. 
 

	"I never thought I would see my brother and sister in this lifetime. I have waited for this moment for so long and now I do not want to leave them and go to Pakistan," Sarkar said.

 Four channels – <keyword id="2238539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="NewsX">NewsX</keyword>, <keyword id="211456" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India-TV">India TV</keyword>, <keyword id="1739243" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="ABP-News">ABP News</keyword> and <keyword id="60050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="CNN-IBN">CNN-IBN</keyword> – have projected comfortable majority for the NDA. NewsX and India TV have projected 289 seats for the NDA while ABP News estimated that the NDA would capture 281 seats. However, Times Now was the most conservative in its projections, giving the NDA 249-265 <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> seats, while CNN-IBN gave it 279-282 seats. 
 
Hindi news channel News24 gave NDA a thumping majority and predicted it to bag 340 seats. On the other hand, Aaj Tak predicted the NDA figures in the range of 261-283. Even if the party gets 261, getting the support of 11 more MPs should not be too difficult, given the fact that the AIADMK chief Jayalalitha is said to be close to Narendra Modi and has extended her support to the coalition in the past during the tenure of the Vajpayee government. 
 
Most of the exit polls showed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) getting between 101 and 148 seats. NewsX gave the UPA 101 seats, India TV 107 seats, ABP News 97 and CNN-IBN 92-102. 
 
‘Others’, including regional parties like the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samajwadi Party, JD (U) and the Left Front, are estimated to get between 146 and 156 seats. 
 
The exit polls also forecast that the BJP would not be able to open its account in the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. However, in the North, the Narendra Modi wave is projected to sweep away regional identity-based heavyweights like the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar. 
 
The BJP is likely have the biggest gains in Uttar Pradesh where two surveys expect it to bag 54 seats, just three less than its all-time high of 57 in 1998. Similarly, the exit polls ruled out the possibility of RJD’s revival. 
 
The debutant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is projected to get an average of only five seats, with a total vote share of about 4%.

But if you are expecting a movie featuring <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> in the troubled 70s or a big-time gangster flick that reveals a human core, it will be better to skip <keyword id="6427325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gunday">Gunday</keyword>. Directed by <keyword id="6368814" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ali-Abbas-Zafar">Ali Abbas Zafar</keyword>, this gun-goon-and-gal flick has loads of twists and turns, follows a long-winded <keyword id="1097560" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="storyline">storyline</keyword> and stars big names including <keyword id="106133" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ranveer-Singh">Ranveer Singh</keyword>, <keyword id="114453" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arjun-Kapoor">Arjun Kapoor</keyword>, <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword> and <keyword id="16207" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Irrfan-Khan">Irrfan Khan</keyword>. But that’s where its claim to fame should end unless you are ready to ogle some brawn and oomph, a pseudo-historical account of the times and a glimpse of the City of Joy as the background. 
 
Gunday was released on the Valentine’s Day (February 14) and tries hard to explore the <keyword id="1541122" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="bromance">bromance</keyword> between the male leads – the <keyword id="1739443" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="outlaw">outlaw</keyword> duo of <keyword id="19013" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="bikram">Bikram</keyword> (Ranveer) and <keyword id="17684" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bala">Bala</keyword> (Arjun). While that is commendable to some extent, the contrived love triangle involving Priyanka (<keyword id="70837" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nandita">Nandita</keyword>) looks scarcely convincing and her main utility seems to be getting the eyeballs. 
 
Yet, the movie has done fairly well at the box office, netting around Rs 43.93 crore at home after the first weekend. Gunday has, however, failed to race past another action thriller, Salman-starrer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Jai-Ho-Salman-FightsThrough-Clichs-Fails-To-Create-A-Dhoom/articleshow/29505187.cms">Jai Ho</a>, which earned around Rs 60 crore in the debut weekend. Overseas collections of Gunday stood at $2.16 million gross. But there was a drop in collection on the crucial Day 4 (February 17) and the movie netted around Rs 6.5 crore as per industry estimates. Still, we are seeing some steady traction and Gunday may soon enter the coveted Rs <keyword id="6567206" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="100-crore-club">100 crore club</keyword>. The flick, made on an approximate budget of Rs 50 crore including promotions, has reportedly hit over 2,000 screens across India. 
 
Coming back to the story, let’s have a close look at what makes Gunday kind of unpalatable. Interestingly, <keyword id="2217" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Big-B">Big B</keyword>, who had watched the film at its Mumbai premiere, told the media that it’s “an adrenaline-packed movie.” That’s true and Gunday tries to capture the saga of angry young men who get on the wrong side of the law on their way to a glamorised life of crime. Does it remind you of Deewaar? The broad <keyword id="50138" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Theme">theme</keyword> of Gunday is not unlike that old classic but then, everything else has gone awry – be it storyline, acting, periodicity or dialogues. 
 For one, the entire journey of Bikram and Bala looks patchy. The movie fails to give us a realistic version of the metamorphosis they have undergone – from orphan kids (migrants from <keyword id="6354759" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bangladesh">Bangladesh</keyword>) to big-time coal mafias who are always on the run from the law. But in doing so, Ranveer-Arjun display loads of bromance; get involved in <keyword id="2065117" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shirtless-fights">shirtless fights</keyword> à la <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>, and show off their biceps &amp; waxed 6-packs (imagine that in the 70s) quite unabashed. Are they the new <keyword id="2065120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Male-eye-candy">male eye candy</keyword>, we wonder? But more than that, they are the brainless brawn type who can be easily trapped by the cops. 
 The duo duly falls in love with the <keyword id="2065114" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="gorgeous-cabaret-dancer">gorgeous cabaret dancer</keyword> Nandita (Priyanka Chopra) who obviously can’t be what she seems. So she turns out to be an <keyword id="2065123" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Undercover-police">undercover police</keyword> officer, in league with <keyword id="2065121" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ACP-Satyajeet-Sarkar">ACP Satyajeet Sarkar</keyword> (Irrfan Khan). A look at Nandita’s get-up makes us wonder whether Kolkata had ever seen such flamboyant fashion trends during that period. Still, Priyanka is playing the role of a seductress and <keyword id="77110" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Undercover-agent">undercover agent</keyword>. So she must look lethal, even when she is clad in the traditional saree. In contrast, Irrfan does a commendable job and does the voiceover, too. 
 What you may love about this movie is the easy-flowing chemistry between Ranveer and Arjun, some good punch lines and Irrfan’s great acting. But the flick falls flat by the end as clichés abound and not even the suspense ending can save it. Protagonists/anti-heroes of this sort can attain a different height if the storyline and the characters are handled with subtlety and sensitiveness. But <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword> Ali Abbas Zafar gives as something as crass and over-the-top as his earlier movie, <keyword id="440305" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mere-brother-ki-Dulhan">Mere Brother Ki Dulhan</keyword>. And the outcome? As Mohar Basu of Koimoi says, it’s a “sexy show gone dull.” All because talented actors are made to struggle to find their rhythm in a cliché-laden <keyword id="6371619" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="plot">plot</keyword>.
