The <keyword id="6710591" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mugger-crocodile">mugger crocodile</keyword> or broad-snouted crocodile (scientifically known as Crocodylus palustris) is listed as an endangered species in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act. While the plan may boost tourism around Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, some of the top officials have reportedly been questioning the idea. According to them, removing these crocodiles from Narmada and bringing them back to a human habitat will affect the natural balance. According to one forest official, the crocodiles will likely be released in a reservoir around the dam but the scale of the evacuation could potentially harm their breeding cycles. India’s Civil Aviation Department and the Gujarat government have been working on a plan to build a seaplane terminal near Pond 3, also known as Magar talav (crocodile pond). The seaplane terminal will connect the Sardar Patel statue site with other cities in Gujarat. India launched the seaplane service with much fanfare last year and was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. <ul><li>The world’s tallest statue, the <keyword id="1704539" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="statue-of-unity">Statue of Unity</keyword>, was unveiled in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> earlier today.</li><li>After the initial cost of ₹30 billion, the Indian government is now shelling out more money to advertise it. </li><li>While the statue has been built to attract more tourists to the Indian state of Gujarat, many citizens are wondering if its worth spending taxpayer money on publicity.</li></ul>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-statue-of-unity-is-now-the-tallest-in-the-world-its-twice-as-tall-as-the-statue-of-liberty/articleshow/66441817.cms">world’s tallest statue</a> was unveiled in India earlier today. Not only did it cost ₹30 billion ($410 million) to construct, but the government is shelling out an extra ₹500 million ($6.7 million) a year to maintain it. And, to top it off, the government is pumping in more money to advertise India’s newest tourist attraction. While the statue is definitely an impressive feat in itself towering at 182 meters as a marvel of engineering, many people are left <a href="https://www.dailyo.in/variety/statue-of-unity-why-tallest-statue-of-sardar-patel-will-dwarf-pm-modi-s-achievments/story/1/27508.html">wondering</a> whether it was the best use of public funds. Further spending on advertising seems even more unjustified. The amount of money that was spent constructing the ‘Statue of Unity’ could have been used to fund two new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campuses, five Indian Institute of Management (IIM) campuses as well as fund six missions to Mars under the India’s apex space agency according to a study done by <a href="https://www.indiaspend.com/statue-of-unity-the-worlds-tallest-but-heres-what-it-could-have-paid-for/">IndiaSpend</a>. Not to mention that at a time of water crisis and agricultural difficulties in Gujarat, the project’s corpus more than doubles the proposed budgets for the <a href="https://pmksy.gov.in/">Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana</a> (Prime Minister’s Agriculture-Irrigation Scheme). Instead of building a tourist attraction, the ₹30 billion could have gone towards irrigating over 40,000 hectares of land, renovating nearly 162 irrigation scheme and constructing 425 small check-dams. What could have been versus what is The cost of building the Statue of Unity is not only about how the money could’ve been spent instead but the <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/on-statue-of-unity-inauguration-villagers-write-open-letter-to-protest-pms-visit-1939614">social costs</a> that should concern the local and national governments. Building a statue requires land — land that usually belongs to an individual or a group of people. In this case, it was land of nearly 72 villages, where 32 have been more severely hit than the rest according to <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/sardar-patel-statue-why-75-000-tribals-are-planning-a-mass-protest-against-statue-of-unity-1934779">NDTV.</a> Rehabilitation efforts have been neglected and since the construction of the statue began, the area has been reporting water shortages.

<ul><li><keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> just unveiled the <keyword id="6191084" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tallest-statue-in-the-world">tallest statue in the world</keyword> on World Unity Day as a tribute to country’s first Deputy Prime Minister, <keyword id="6358976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sardar-Vallabhbhai-Patel">Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel</keyword>.</li><li>The statue stretches to 182 meters, looking over the Narmada River in the state of Gujarat. </li><li>The government is expected that the new tourist spot will attract nearly 15,000 visitors on a daily basis. </li></ul> India’s ‘<keyword id="1704539" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="statue-of-unity">Statue of Unity</keyword>’, unveiled earlier today, is now the tallest statue in the world overtaking China’s Spring Temple Buddha. At 182 meters, it’s even twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. That means if you’re standing anywhere within the radius of 7 kms, you’ll be able to see the statue towering down on you. And, the best part is it’s not just something to stare at. You can actually go inside the statue and climb up the viewing gallery at 153 meters. Since the statue has been constructed on the Sadhu Bet Island on the Narmada River, visitors can see the Sardar Sarovar Dam laid out in front of them from there. The government said that it took over 70,000 tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel and 6,000 tonnes of structural steel to put the statue together. Even the outer layer of statue required over 1,700 tonnes of bronze. The Statue of Unity has been built as a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was key to unitiing the princely states after the India-Pakistan partition in 1947. It’s more than just the statue During the unveiling of the Statue of Unity, more tourist locations were also introduced in and around the location. First off, there’s a 17 kms long valley of flowers in the vicinity. Second, and more importantly, there’s a ‘Tent City’ around the statue where visitors can stay. While the launch of the statue was a big event, one can’t help but wonder if this tourism attraction is going to bring in competition for Gujarat’s most popular winter festival that’s famously known for its tent city, the Rann Utsav. The government’s even come out and said it expects 15,000 tourist visitors on a daily basis. The Indian Railways, to support this venture, is running a special train today called the ‘Unity Express’ that will run from Rajkot to the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, within the state of Gujarat.

Born on the countryside of Gujarat, and raised during the time when British had occupied most parts of India, <keyword id="1966902" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sardar-Vallabhabhai-Patel">Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel</keyword> went on to become the unifier of India that was on the brink of falling apart while almost closing in on independence. 
 The country was vast, and mostly in shambles with the objective of <keyword id="386899" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="freedom-struggle">freedom struggle</keyword> that seemed to have been achieved with British leaving India. But the problems remained. Partition was a lot more gory and painful than what the leaders had imagined. On the other hand, within whatever remained as ‘India’ the feeling of solidarity was rather hazy because the status of ‘republic’ was still far away from being attained. States were excited about freedom, but anxious about what lie ahead of them. 
 
Only few leaders played a prominent role during this time. The barrister turned organiser and a leader with steely spine, Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel was the person who withstood the challenges of time, and managed them like the challenges were what make the fruits of labour sweeter. 
 
In fact, the name ‘Sardar’ was given to him, owing to the fact that he had always displayed amazing organisational and leadership skills. He was a leader who was loved by everyone, and even those who hated him, would grudgingly acknowledge the fact that he was a born leader. 
 The current generation, which trains in B-schools to pick up leadership skills and lessons in management, could well study a personality like <keyword id="24098" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sardar-patel">Sardar Patel</keyword> to understand the importance of staying a thorough leader. He was a rare kind, the only kind and probably will remain so, unchallenged. 
 ‘<keyword id="6414070" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="iron-man">Iron man</keyword> of India’ was what he has been recorded as, through the pages of history. There must be hardly any other leader who was bestowed with meaningful titles from the followers who stood steadfast and strong with their leader. 
 
Here are a few qualities that made him the leader he turned out to be. The one history could never forget, and never stop admiring. 
 
1. Take initiative 
Patel took on himself the task of unifying the states that were torn in different directions under the rule of kings. He had known this was what undid the India that existed before the British took over. Well into the course of struggle for independence, he worked towards this single goal and even after India was free from the British rule, the goal was almost half achieved. But the other half was more challenging than before since it involved having constant dialogue with the stakeholders. Sounds like a typical management challenge? Well, it was and he excelled at it. 
 
2. A true leader 
Though history says Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel had shown great leadership qualities right through his childhood, it would be important to note it was more a personality type than a quality alone. He was someone who was a born leader and clearly identified the traits within himself. He marched the path that his mind showed with clarity and did so fearlessly. A leader is the one who knows how to deal with his confusions. 
 
3. Cross roads excite leaders 
Normal people with basic intelligence get flustered when there is a cross road at any juncture. But, a leader sees these things as an opportunity to choose between two things. Hard thinking coupled with increased clarity on objectives and vision, a cross road is a clear decision of what need to be prioritised over something else. 
 
4. Goal setting 
Unification of the India that was left after partition was a mammoth task. It was no cake walk, but ‘Sardar’ Patel was a born leader who had set this goal and worked towards it relentlessly. He knew once the British left India, the rest of the country had to stand together in solidarity. This could be a crucial lesson for leaders who manage companies through crisis and management of the same. No matter what the challenges are, a goal is what needs to be achieved without blaming situations that threaten the very premise. 
 
5. Stand with people 
While working towards his goal, Patel was with people and not away from them. While he could have a dialogue with Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhiji, he could also communicate with clarity with people who worked at grassroots level as well with equal ease and empathy. Standing with employees even as dialogues with higher stake holders are in progress can set a real leader with vision and goal, apart from ordinary people who would wish to stay away from complicated situations. 
 
6. Sagacity 
What are the important challenges for a leader? Sagacity and integrity being two of them, it is important not to lose sight of the bigger picture. Even when things head on a different direction, staying on the course and working through challenges will only help the person who is at the helm of things. Using shrewdness is a virtue, but make sure it doesn’t threaten to tear the goal apart. Important lesson: bring on the shrewdness, not the ego, into the picture and stay with it. 
 
7. Looking through intricate details 
Intricate details of working towards the set goal can be daunting and tiring. But, that’s what ordinary people experience, and not a leader. Looking through intricate details can help a leader root out smaller problems, and keep everyone together in a situation which is difficult and challenging. Companies wading through difficult waters need leaders who are not just strong, but also lead the way with their own examples. 
 
8. Diplomacy 
Though he was known as a man of iron will and spine; Sardar Patel also often employed diplomacy to keep the dialogue on and never closed the doors of discussion. This was an exclusive role he found and fit himself into, where the other leaders claimed helplessness. A unified India was his gift to the generations ahead.

Leading engineering company <keyword id="90593" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Larsen-and-Toubro">Larsen and Toubro</keyword> (<keyword id="6354919" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LT">L&amp;T</keyword>) has bagged the contract for building '<keyword id="1704539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="statue-of-unity">Statue of Unity</keyword>,' the world's tallest statue of India's first Home Minister <keyword id="6358976" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sardar-Vallabhbhai-Patel">Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel</keyword>. 
 
The 182-metre tall statue, which would be double the size of New York's 'Statue of Liberty' (93 metres), will cost Rs 2,979 crore, said Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel. 
 
"This huge construction work will be completed in four years at a cost of Rs 2,979 crore. The contract has been given to the country's leading construction company Larsen and Toubro. Rs 1,347 crore will be spent on the main statue, Rs 235 crore will be spent on the exhibition hall and convention centre, while Rs 83 crore will be spent on the bridge connecting the memorial to the main land and Rs 657 crore would be spent to maintain the structure until 15 years after it is completed," Patel said in her address, while giving the contract order to L&amp;T. 
 
"The project will include an exhibition hall and audio- visual presentation on the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, which will become the centre of attraction for tourists from the all over the world," she said. 
 
This ambitious project was launched by Narendra Modi on October 31, 2013, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat.
