India's major <keyword id="6413000" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ports" source="Orion">ports</keyword> handled the highest ever cargo at 795 million tonne in 2022-23, <keyword id="5791834" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-ports" source="Orion">Ministry of Ports</keyword>, Shipping and Waterways Secretary <keyword id="189691" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sudhansh-pant" source="Orion">Sudhansh Pant</keyword> said on Friday. <keyword id="236966" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pant" source="Orion">Pant</keyword> further said that with transactions worth about Rs 5,000 crore, the <keyword id="6390662" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shipping-ministry" source="Orion">shipping ministry</keyword> has surpassed its FY23 asset monetisation target of about Rs 3,700 crore. He also said that next week, Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister <keyword id="545729" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sarbananda-sonowal" source="Orion">Sarbananda Sonowal</keyword> will launch 'Green Port' guidelines to make India's ports green. "Our major ports have handled the highest ever cargo in the history of the ports at 795 million metric tonne. This is 10 per cent higher than the previous year's cargo handled," he told PTI. India has 12 major ports - Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Ennore (<keyword id="426494" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kamarajar" source="Orion">Kamarajar</keyword>), Tuticorin (V O Chidambaranar), Visakhapatnam, <keyword id="49809" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="paradip" source="Orion">Paradip</keyword> and <keyword id="6354925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kolkata" source="Orion">Kolkata</keyword> (including Haldia) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port. "Four or five of the major ports, including <keyword id="9340309" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="syama-prasad-mookerjee-port" source="Orion">Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port</keyword> (Kolkata), Deendayal (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Paradip have recorded the highest ever cargo," Pant added. He also pointed out that after many many years, the major ports have recorded a higher annual growth than that of non-major ports. Non-major ports are administered by state governments. Many state governments have given such ports on lease to private partners. "So, this year (2022-23), major ports achieved an overall growth of 10.4 per cent, while non-major ports achieved a growth 1.5 to 2 per cent less than this," he said. While the share of major ports in the total cargo was 54 per cent and non-major ports was 46 per cent in FY22, Pant said in FY23, the share of major ports rose to 55 per cent and that of non-major ports fell to 45 per cent. "So even 1 per cent shift is a very significant achievement for major ports, because despite so many challenges, they have increased their share by 1 per cent ," he said. Pant also said the inland waterways increased their cargo handling by 16 per cent to 126 million tonne in 2022-23 from 109 million tonne in 2021-22. He said the turnaround time in major ports has reduced by 3-4 hours to 48-49 hours. India's major ports handled highest ever cargo at 795 million tonne in FY23

The <keyword id="6354915" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="assam">Assam</keyword> Cabinet on Monday decided that no <keyword id="6362949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-jobs">government jobs</keyword> will be given to persons having more than two children after January 1, 2021. The important decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting held late Monday evening that also adopted a New Land Policy, which will give three bighas of agricultural land to landless indegenous people and half a bigha for constructing a house. A communique from the Chief Minister <keyword id="545729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sarbananda-Sonowal">Sarbananda Sonowal</keyword>'s public relations cell stated that those having more than two children will not be considered for government jobs with effect from January 1, 2021 as per the small family norm. In September 2017, the Assam Assembly had passed the 'Population and Women Empowerment Policy of Assam' that specified that job candidates with two children only would be eligible for government employment and the existing government staff were to strictly follow the two children family norm. "New Land Policy was adopted. Three bighas of land will be given to landless indigenous people. Landless people will be offered half a bigha to construct their houses. These cannot be sold for 15 years," the CMO statement said. The Cabinet meeting also decided to increase the bus fares in the state by 25 per cent, it added. TR RHL

No government jobs for Assamese people with more than two kids, the state declares

Meet <keyword id="3877859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="subashini-sankaran">Subashini Sankaran</keyword>, the first <keyword id="244095" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="woman-IPS-officer">woman IPS officer</keyword> to take charge of the security of a Chief Minister. She is guarding Sarbananda Sonowa, the Chief Minister of Assam, India's largest state in northeastern India dealing with not only law and order problems and counter-insurgency, but also communal strife, smuggling, poaching and several such issues. 
 
To be working for the CM of a difficult region is no mean feat. Moreover, ensuring the security of a state's CM is a job with zero tolerance for error. Sankaran is responsible for planning the routes of the CM's travel. She also coordinates with the teams that provide close proximity protection and briefs security personnel. It is a stressful job and her work day often extends to 18 hours. Over everything else, she is an Indian woman breaking stereotypes by leading from the front. 
 
“It was a new thing for everybody, but people slowly adapted to being comfortable about having a lady police officer as the chief minister’s head of security,” Subashini told News18. 
 
Suhasini's journey: From a sociology graduate to taking charge of a CM's security 
 
Hailing from an educated middle-class family, she belongs to Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district. She, however, moved to Mumbai in the 1980s with her parents. 
 
After doing her schooling in Mumbai and finishing her graduation in Sociology from St. Xavier’s College, she joined Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi to pursue her Masters and M. Phil. She wrote her dissertation on women and terrorism, focusing on the suicide bomber squads of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. It gave her an insight into the broader political and sociological situation in India and a nuanced understanding of law and order issues. 
 While in <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword>, Subashini started preparing for the UPSC exams. In 2010, Subashini cracked the UPSC Mains examination with rank 243. She went to Hyderabad for her Police Academy training and was finally stationed in Assam. Here, she learnt the basics of Indian policing, handling the physical and mental demands that accompany being a law enforcement officer. 
 
No other member of her family has ever worked for the police; her father was employed in the industrial safety department of a private company, her mother is a homemaker and her sister an entrepreneur in the United States. 
 
Before her current appointment, she worked as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Azara Police Station in Guwahati. Next, she was transferred to Biswanath District, followed by stints in Silchar and Tezpur as Additional Superintendent. While in Biswanath Chariali, Subashini and her team busted a rhino–poaching ring operating out of nearby Kaziranga. 
 
She has an advice for police officers, something she learnt on the job - “Talk when necessary, take firm action when necessary. Lawfully, of course.”

The discussion is crucial as both the budgets shape the financial direction of the country and the Union Territory, respectively. The reports were presented to the Speaker on February 23 and April 29, 2024, and to the Chairman, Rajya Sabha, on February 28 and May 13, 2024, before the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha. The Speaker had ordered the printing, publication and circulation of the reports. He also lauded the government's decision to provide training and internship programmes to youth. The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, welcomed the Union Budget 2024 laid before Parliament on Tuesday. Calling the Union Budget 2024 a 'visionary document', Sonowal said, "The Union Budget, 2024 lays the roadmap for renewed and holistic growth towards Viksit Bharat. This visionary budget is aimed at empowering the 'Garib' (poor), 'Mahilayen' (women), 'Yuva' (youth), and Annadata' (farmers) so that the process of development reaches every citizen of the country."
