However, it said that fluctuations in <keyword id="19936629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="commodity-prices" source="keywords">commodity prices</keyword>, especially for critical imports like oil, metals, and agricultural products, can impact India's trade balance and inflation levels. The Survey said that though ongoing geopolitical headwinds impacted India's merchandise exports, lowering international commodity prices ensured a lower trade deficit in FY24 than in FY23. The country's merchandise trade deficit narrowed to USD 240 billion in 2023-24 from USD 265 billion in 2022-23. It added that changes in trade policies by major trading partners or geopolitical developments can affect India's export opportunities and market access. "In the coming years, India's trade deficit is expected to decline further as the <keyword id="19981334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PLI-scheme" source="keywords">PLI scheme</keyword> is expanded and India creates a globally competitive manufacturing base in several product categories," the Survey said. It added that the recently signed FTAs (free trade agreements) are expected to increase the <keyword id="22374533" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-market-share" source="keywords">global market share</keyword> of the country's exports. The PLI scheme for sectors like mobile manufacturing, information technology (IT) hardware, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, and food product are helping to increase manufacturing and cut imports. India has implemented <keyword id="20000557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FTA" source="keywords">FTA</keyword> with Mauritius, Australia and the UAE. It added that a narrowing merchandise trade deficit and rising service exports have improved the CAD (<keyword id="20054874" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="current-account-deficit" source="keywords">current account deficit</keyword>), ending with a surplus of 0.6 per cent of GDP in Q4 of FY24. However, the risks to the performance of India's external sector are on the downside due to the persistence of current <keyword id="19955176" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="geopolitical-tensions" source="keywords">geopolitical tensions</keyword> and policy uncertainty, it said. Some of the challenges listed by the survey includes fall in demand from major trading partners like the US, rise in trade cost, and volatility in commodity prices. Attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and drought in the Panama Canal have resulted in trade flows being re-routed, increasing journey time and costs. India's merchandise trade relies heavily on maritime trade, so disturbances in major shipping routes can impact its economy. "It is critical to explore what these changing paradigms mean for India. Policies need to be a mix that straddles security concerns with economic considerations," the survey said, adding India's push towards manufacturing in complex and niche sectors through schemes such as PLI and Make in India aims to balance these goals. Further, the survey emphasised on the need to focus on improving India's competitiveness in many product areas. For example, it said, India has tremendous potential in becoming a large global exporter in agricultural commodities. Fostering stronger regional trade ties and adding more markets for Indian goods will help mitigate global demand fluctuations. "In an era when global economic growth is likely to be buffeted by geopolitical tensions and protectionism, growing India's exports of goods and services will be a stiffer challenge than before," it cautioned. Commenting on this, Rumki Majumdar, Economist, Deloitte India, said that despite global uncertainties, India's exports are recording positive growth rates. "That shows the resilience of our exports amidst global uncertainties," she said, adding, "by transforming our export basket and focusing on higher margins and value addition across various sectors, India will easily achieve its ambition of USD 2 trillion in exports by 2030-31."

India's trade deficit expected to decline further: Economic Survey

Mumbai: The rupee slipped 1 paisa to an all-time low of 84.40 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, as persistent <keyword id="20520117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-fund-outflows" source="keywords">foreign fund outflows</keyword> and a muted trend in domestic equities weighed on the local unit. Forex traders said the USDINR pair has shown significant volatility in recent sessions, with the rupee inching closer to its all-time low of 84.40. This downward pressure is largely driven by global factors, particularly the Dollar Index's strengthening. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.40 against the greenback, registering a fall of 1 paisa over its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee fell 1 paisa to a new lifetime low of 84.39 against the US dollar. "It appears that the rupee has established support around the current levels, with depreciation limited near 84.50," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Pabari further added that the RBI stands tall as the depreciation in the rupee seems to be limited as the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) continues to sell the dollars to protect the sharp depreciation. "For the 5th consecutive week, India's forex reserves declined, possibly due to RBI selling the dollars. Currently, the forex reserves of India stand at USD 682 billion down from the recent all-time high of USD 704 billion," he said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading lower by 0.04 per cent at 105.98. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.25 per cent to USD 72.07 per barrel in futures trade. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex was trading 210.66 points, or 0.27 per cent lower, to 78,464.52 points. The Nifty fell 100.45 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 23,783.00 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Tuesday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 3,024.31 crore, according to exchange data. On the macroeconomic front, retail inflation breached the Reserve Bank's upper tolerance level, soaring to a 14-month high of 6.21 per cent in October mainly on account of rising food prices. Inflation based on the consumer price index (CPI) was 5.49 per cent in September and 4.87 per cent in the year-ago month. India's industrial production expanded by 3.1 per cent in September after recording a contraction in the preceding month, as all three major segments -- mining, manufacturing, and power generation -- showed improvement. However, the growth in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) during the month was lower than 6.4 per cent registered in September 2023.

Sapphire Foods India lists at 11% premium on exchanges

The approval by the US Food &amp; Drug Administration (<keyword id="44669" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="usfda" source="Orion">USFDA</keyword>) is for the abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) for Esomeprazole Magnesium delayed-release capsules of strengths 20 mg and 40 mg, Granules India said in a regulatory filing. It is bioequivalent and therapeutically equivalent to the reference listed drug (RLD), Nexium Delayed-Release Capsules, 20 mg and 40 mg, of AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP. Esomeprazole Magnesium capsules are indicated for short-term treatment of heartburn and other symptoms associated GERD, risk reduction of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)-associated gastric ulcer in adults and long-term treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, it added. The current annual US market for Esomeprazole Magnesium delayed-release capsules is approximately USD 168 million, the company said citing IQVIA/IMS Health July 2023 data. Granules India posted a 62.4% fall in its net profit for the first quarter ended on June 30, 2023, at ₹47.9 crore. This contrasts with its net profit of ₹127.5 crore in the corresponding previous quarter. It is noteworthy that the Granules India stock is up 6.4% in the last month and 16% in the past six.

Encouraged by volume growth, margin improvement and recovery in rural sales, India's top fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies are now back to their normal growth cycle as they step up investments as well as spending on advertising and marketing. <keyword id="84065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg-companies" source="Orion">FMCG companies</keyword> are chasing volume growth again after a gap of a few quarters, offering higher grammage and price cuts thanks to inflationary pressures softening on key raw materials for everything from soaps to food items. Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Dabur, Marico, Godrej Consumer Products, ITC, Tata Consumer Products and Nestle reported volume recovery in the March quarter and said they expect a gradual pickup in consumption in FY24. "The prospects of a sustained recovery have strengthened. After five quarters of volume decline, the sector has posted volume growth," Marico MD and CEO Saugata Gupta said in the company's earnings conference call. "Urban consumption has been steady while rural is showing some convincing signs of having bottomed out." Foods continue to drive growth for the sector, while the home and personal care segment also entered positive territory after an extended slowdown. Marico, which owns popular brands like Saffola, Parachute and Livon, reported an 18.7 per cent increase in its consolidated net profit to Rs 305 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2023 while sales rose 3.65 per cent to Rs 2,240 crore, driven by single-digit volume growth and moderation in commodity prices. HUL said rural areas have shown improvement with higher value growth sequentially. While HUL's volumes continue to fall, the extent of decline has reduced versus last quarter. "The slowdown in the FMCG market is bottoming out. This improvement was led by volumes, which have turned flat in this quarter, versus a mid-single-digit decline in the December quarter," said HUL CFO Ritesh Tiwari in its earnings call. The makers of popular brands such as Rin, Lux, Surf Excel and Pond's said it expects the price-volume growth to rebalance further. "We expect volumes to recover gradually due to high levels of cumulative inflation and the fact that consumption habits typically recover with a lag," he said. For the March quarter, HUL reported an increase of 12.74 per cent in its consolidated net profit to Rs 2,601 crore. Net sales rose 10.83 per cent to Rs 14,926 crore. However, HUL warned the near-term operating environment is likely to remain volatile due to global slowdown risk and uncertainty related to weather phenomena like El Nino and heatwaves. Abneesh Roy, Nuvama Group Executive Director for Institutional Equities, said the outlook for the <keyword id="495979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg-industry" source="Orion">FMCG industry</keyword> was "positive" with volume growth and improvement in margins for most companies in FY24. "As raw material prices are cooling off, companies shall start paring prices via grammage increase or gradual price reductions. Price growth shall ease while volume growth will improve," he said. Roy also cautioned about the impact of El Nino and the "aggression" from billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd, a known disrupter, which aims to be a big player in the USD 110-billion FMCG segment. Meanwhile, Godrej Consumer reported an 11.47 per cent increase in its India revenue to Rs 1,822.92 crore in the March quarter. This was led by volume growth of 11 per cent. Its home care segment, which consists of household insecticides and air fresheners, grew 14 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively. "We expect to build on the current momentum and deliver volume-led growth along with upfront marketing investments and improvement in profitability," said its Managing Director and CEO Sudhir Sitapati. Britannia Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Varun Berry also expressed optimism. "Volume growth will be certainly much better than this year," he said. On commodity prices, Berry said there is deflation in prices of palm oil, laminates and corrugated material for packing but flour and milk prices are soaring. "There are certain brands and certain packs where we have already initiated price reductions or promotions," he said. In the March quarter, Britannia reported a 47.53 per cent jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 557.60 crore. Its revenue from operations rose 10.93 per cent to Rs 3,892.02. Similarly, Dabur reported volume growth of 11 per cent during the March quarter and 14 per cent for FY23. Its quarterly net profit was Rs 292.76 crore and revenue from operations stood at Rs 2,677.8 crore. "Despite near-term concerns around inflationary pressures, we plan to accelerate the growth momentum by continuing to invest in brand building, innovation, and capabilities that will drive growth," said Dabur India CEO Mohit Malhotra. Other companies also recorded growth. ITC's revenue from the FMCG segment rose 19.34 per cent to Rs 4,951.17 crore from Rs 4,148.62 crore while EBITDA jumped 76 per cent. Nestle, the maker of Maggi, Kitkat and Nescafe, reported an increase of 24.69 per cent in its net profit to Rs 736.64 crore in the March quarter. Sales rose 20.43 per cent to Rs 4,808.40 crore. Tata Consumer reported a 21.12 per cent rise in its consolidated net profit to Rs 289.56 crore. Its revenue from operations was up 13.96 per cent at Rs 3,618.73 crore. Tata Consumer said it recorded growth in the India beverages business and food. It had a "strong margin growth and strong topline growth driven both by volume and price," the company said in its earnings call. "We have started seeing volume growth coming back. The impact of inflation and monetary tightening on economic growth and demand seems to be slowing down, but I would keep my fingers crossed and monitor it closely," said Tata Consumer MD and CEO Sunil D'Souza. "In the near term, we are seeing stability." FMCG makers expect sustained recovery in volume and margins with price reduction in FY24

<ul><li>While QSRs have been growing aggressively in the last two years, few have been concentrating on dine-in experiences.</li><li>Only McDonald’s run by <keyword id="15483921" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Westlife-Foodworld" source="Orion">Westlife Foodworld</keyword> in India has gained from the trend as it focussed on omnichannel strategy.</li><li>The pizza category – where the product is designed for delivery – suffered the most as dine-ins gained popularity.</li></ul>Indians are wanting to step out for their meals, and that’s hurting quick-service restaurants (QSRs) as well as delivery apps equally. So much so that Swiggy has recently announced that it’s integrating its dine-out offerings onto its platform across 24 cities, allowing users to access discounts as they book via the app. While QSRs have been growing aggressively in the last two years – with a large number of new store openings – few of them have been concentrating on dine-in experiences. And only one chain – McDonald’s run by Westlife Foodworld in India – has gained from the trend as it focussed on the post-pandemic retail trend of an omnichannel strategy. “McDonald’s (Westlife) reported a 20% y-o-y same-store sales growth (SSSG), largely driven by higher guest count and average order value, due to its meals and omnichannel strategy,” said a report by BNP Paribas on the company’s third quarter results. A Credit Suisse report had said last month that McDonald’s offers more meals – across breakfast, coffee and chicken apart from burgers and sides. A larger menu is best suited to bring in footfalls through the day. “Westlife/McDonald’s reiterated their preference for the larger-size, longer-lease store model, which they have successfully figured out; the rest of the listed universe has pivoted to a smaller -store format,” said Credit Suisse. Pizzas: Undelivered growth The pizza category – where the product is designed for delivery – suffered the most. The franchises that run Pizza Hut – Sapphire and <keyword id="142256" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Devyani-International" source="Orion">Devyani International</keyword> – saw a sequential fall in SSSG by 4% and 6%, respectively. Jubilant that runs Domino’s showed almost flat SSSG growth sequentially. “Softer demand continued in the pizza category owing to larger delivery salience, relatively higher penetration and elevated competitive intensity. Pizza Hut posted a q-o-q (quarter-on-quarter) decline in sales, while Domino’s reported flat like-for-like growth of 0.3% y-o-y,” said BNP Paribas. Like-for-like or LFL growth is a metric that indicates revenues of stores with similar characteristics, omitting outliers. KFC witnessed a decline in its ADS (average daily sales per store) both sequentially and year-on-year (y-o-y) due to weak consumer spending and incremental store additions in non-metro cities that typically have lower ADS. While 35% of sales for Domino’s comes from on-premises, for McDonald’s that percentage stands at 52%, for Pizza Hut it’s 41% and for KFC it’s 54%. Moreover, almost all QSRs have been expanding their store numbers but reducing store sizes to make them delivery friendly. So much so, even Pizza Hut, which had started off as a dine-in brand, had changed its strategy to focus on delivery in the last few years to catch up with its closest competitor Domino’s. <div type="image" title="QSR report" msid="98201473" hostid="261" sizebytes="29596"></div> Then there is the slowdown… Apart from changing preferences, Indians also seem to be re-thinking their discretionary spends – which is also eating into <keyword id="6517640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="QSR" source="Orion">QSR</keyword> business. “The slowdown in discretionary consumption, especially post Diwali, has dampened the strong demand sentiment that QSR players witnessed in the past few quarters. This is attributed to rising inflationary pressures, a cut in household expenses and consumers’ down-trading behaviour,” said a report by BNP Paribas. Moreover, the growth that a majority of consumer companies have foreseen might turn out to be a mirage. “The growth rate for food delivery has slowed down versus our projections (along with many peer companies globally). This meant that we needed to revisit our overall indirect costs to hit our profitability goals,” said Swiggy co-founder and CEO Sriharsha Majety on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/swiggy-co-founder-says-over-hiring-a-mistake-as-he-fires-380-employees/articleshow/97171514.cms">firing 380 employees </a>in January. According to a report by IIFL, as many as 820-920 such restaurants will be added every year as most franchises that run the aforementioned brands are looking to double their store count in the next four to five years. “We believe store expansion targets might need to be toned down if the growth remains weak. Owing to the demand and margin softness, street earnings estimates have come off in the last few weeks,” said BNP Paribas. Moreover, there are other challenges dogging them too – rising wheat and cheese prices have been biting into their margins. Muted sales also give them little room for price hikes, which could further pressure sales and margins. "We are passing on the benefit of the reduced cost to our customers. We are confident the lower prices will also boost demand," said Angshu Mallick, MD and CEO at Adani Wilmar after reducing the price of Fortune refined Sunflower oil's one-litre pack by ₹10 to ₹210. This comes after Hyderabad-based Gemini Edibles &amp; Fats and Mother Dairy both cut prices of cooking oil by ₹15 on one-litre pack – bringing relief to this household essential which has been on the receiving end of inflation for months now. This sentiment could spread across more packaged products, by more FMCG majors. “We expect consumer and retail companies to pause taking further price increases though sector valuations appear rich, with improving out‐of‐home consumption,” said a report by Centrum Broking firm. In the last few months as input costs rose, <keyword id="160413" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg-players" source="Orion">FMCG players</keyword> have been resorting to reducing pack sizes while increasing pack prices. A reduction in base import of crude palm oil, soy oil could be passed on to other products in which it is used like — soaps, biscuits, noodles and even shampoo, lipsticks and detergents. It would mean a sharp reduction in household grocery bills, which have only been on the rise for consumers. Normal monsoon can aid the sector to remain green Lower prices would also mean the tapering demand for packaged products would also improve. Also, there are expectations that rural demand may recover on the back of higher government spending and normal monsoon. Rural demand has been hit after consumers <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/life-in-rural-india-hit-by-a-wilted-rabi-crop/articleshow/92333426.cms">traded down to cheaper and smaller packets </a>after inflation hit their doorsteps much harder than it did for urban consumers. If and when consumers shift to smaller pack sizes, most FMCG players tend to lose market share to local and regional players who cater more variety at those price points. However, if pack prices improve, FMCG majors’ volumes will improve – which have been losing revenue for the last eight months. Rural economy is key for FMCG players as a cool off in agricultural commodities inflation will also help reduce their own costs and improve margins. “If commodity prices witness correction from the current level, margins of consumer goods companies might witness a sequential improvement from Q3 FY2023. Commentary of most consumer goods companies suggests recovery in sales volume from Q2/Q3 of FY2023, if the inflation environment stabilizes in the coming months,” said analysts at Sharekhan. An FMCG bull run The optimism around the sector picking up soon is reflected in companies share prices as well. In a weak market sentiment, shares of FMCG players were among the biggest gainers as their fortunes will improve irrespective of worries about global interest rates and a possible recession in the US. “We are very bullish on the FMCG sector from here because we believe costs are coming down from previous highs and they are in a position to pass on incremental costs to consumers, which will help to increase these companies' margins,” said Ravi Singhal, vice chairman at GCL Securities.
