New Delhi, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s smartphone market has maintained stability with 148.6 million shipments overall in 2023, witnessing a minor drop of two per cent, a new report has said. According to the market research firm <keyword id="19930983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="canalys" source="keywords">Canalys</keyword>, Indian smartphone vendors benefited from strong demand throughout the festival season, driving Q4 sales to 38.9 million units -- a remarkable 20 per cent increase in comparison to the previous year. "In 2023, growing investment in mainline retail space proved beneficial not only for vendors but also allowed the overall market to stabilise," said <keyword id="20238672" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanyam-chaurasia" source="keywords">Sanyam Chaurasia</keyword>, Senior Analyst at Canalys. <keyword id="19897758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="samsung" source="keywords">Samsung</keyword> maintained the top position in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023 with a market share of 20 per cent and shipments of 7.6 million units. Xiaomi continued its robust performance, claiming second place by shipping 7.2 million units. Vivo secured third position with shipments of seven million units, while realme and OPPO rounded out the top five by shipping 4.5 million and 3.7 million units, respectively, the report mentioned. "The premium segment witnessed robust growth, thanks to easy financing options, incentive schemes for retailers and rising disposable income," said <keyword id="20269245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chaurasia" source="keywords">Chaurasia</keyword>. "With the celebration of Diwali in November 2023, Apple got the opportunity to push the latest iPhone 15 series during the festive sales, contributing more than 50% to its shipments in Q4," he added. The analyst also noted that Samsung had set aggressive retail targets for its premium Galaxy S23 series to drive premium segment growth. Along with this, Samsung's latest Galaxy S23 FE launch in Q4 drove shipments, due to compelling banking deals. "Canalys expects the Indian smartphone market to grow by mid-single digits in 2024, driven by affordable 5G and the pandemic period replacement cycle. But the biggest challenge for vendors this year will be to manage the rising bill of materials costs," Chaurasia stated.

Even during the festive season, the domestic market suffered a fall in transactions, retail spending and electronic imports. "In 2022, consumers already had up-to-date technology that they had bought during the pandemic, thereby delaying further purchases. This led to smartphone brands struggling with inventory management because demand was subdued," <keyword id="1637534" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chaurasia" source="Orion">Chaurasia</keyword> added. The Indian economy started to feel the impact of the global economic slowdown toward the end of 2022. "We are entering 2023 with economic indicators suggesting a sluggish performance in the short term," said Chaurasia. But, in 2024, India is set to hold its general election and the government's strategy will be to boost consumers' purchasing power, even if inflation remains high. "We expect moderate growth in the Indian smartphone market in 2023 fuelled by a replacement cycle driven by 5G devices, state government deals, smartphone penetration and the introduction of new use cases," said Canalys. India smartphone shipments down 6% in Q3, Xiaomi leads

The global smartphone market is likely to witness modest growth in a cautious-looking 2024, as various companies will close this year with a relatively healthier inventory level, providing space to rebuild their stock in preparation for a potential demand resurgence. According to a Canalys report, Regional performance is expected to diverge due to regional conflicts and geopolitical tensions. "Vendors should remain flexible and adaptable in their strategies to seize growth opportunities in specific regions. Additionally, close monitoring of end demand in different regions is needed to strategically optimise resource allocation and avoid disruptions," said Lucas Zhong, research analyst. In the saturated market competition, vendors must continuously enhance their capabilities and focus on profit and product portfolio optimisation, he added. The global smartphone market fell slightly by 1 per cent to 293.4 million units in Q3 with vendors pushing new models following a healthy inventory level in Q2. <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword> held the pole position and shipped 57.4 million units with a 20 per cent market share. <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> followed in second place, shipping 50 million units and gaining 17 per cent market share, driven by strong initial demand for the iPhone 15 series with USB-C upgrade. <keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword> took third place, shipping 41.5 million units, achieving an annual growth of 2 per cent, owing to strong performance in emerging markets. "Rising demand for fresh offerings in emerging markets is propelling brands and channels forward as the holiday season approaches," said Sanyam Chaurasia, senior analyst. "Xiaomi and the TRANSSION Group maintained their strong performance from the previous quarter and were the sole brands among the top five to experience growth," he added. Vendors are seeking opportunities to solidify their positioning in the premium market. However, as foldable smartphone options continue to increase, this trend poses a challenge to Samsung's current dominance in the same market. "OPPO strategically introduced the Find N3 and OnePlus Open models in different regions, demonstrating Android brands' ambition to capture the global foldable market," said Zhong.

After a tough start to the year, due to the second wave of Covid-19, India recovered strongly in the second half, reports market research firm <keyword id="216011" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="canalys" source="Orion">Canalys</keyword>. "Thanks to the vaccination rollout, market reopening and pent-up demand, smartphone shipments reached all-time highs for the full-year. Growth is expected to continue in 2022, driven by both replacement demand and new customers migrating to smartphones," Sanyam Chaurasia, Analyst Canalys said in a statement. Following a strong comeback in Q3, smartphone vendors shipped 44.5 million devices in Q4 for 2 per cent growth, despite a challenging supply chain. Xiaomi was the leader, shipping 9.3 million units and maintained its 21 per cent market share. Samsung came second with 8.5 million units for 19 per cent share. For the first time realme climbed to third place in India, with a 49 per cent year-on-year increase in volume that reached 7.6 million shipments. Fourth and fifth place were taken by vivo and OPPO, with 5.6 million and 4.9 million units respectively. "Overall, India will see upward momentum towards future-proof technologies, with smartphones being at the core of the digital ecosystem and growing ever-more essential to the daily lives of Indian citizens," Chaurasia added.
