Believing farmer producer organisations (FPOs) can transform agriculture, <keyword id="6357073" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="itc" source="Orion">ITC</keyword> Chairman <keyword id="1968926" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sanjiv-puri" source="Orion">Sanjiv Puri</keyword> on Friday said there are multiple opportunities in Indian agriculture today to achieve sustainable growth and productivity, given the grit and determination of Indian farmers and a proactive government. Speaking at the CII Agro Tech summit 2022 here, <keyword id="4903" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="puri" source="Orion">Puri</keyword>, who is also a Chairman of the agro tech, said agriculture is the lifeline of the economy and roughly half of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s workforce is engaged in this sector. However, its contribution to the gross value added (GVA) is only about 18 per cent with challenges such as low productivity and wastage, which translates to lower farm incomes. On challenges to the agriculture sector and the impact of climate change, Puri said: "Today the sector is faced with a challenge of epic proportions and it's not unique to this sector or to India. Last year many countries experienced events that dramatically reduced crop production. This year is no different, we have challenges in <keyword id="28249" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="europe" source="Orion">Europe</keyword>, China and the US and recently in Indonesia. We have a neighbour whose agriculture sector has been devastated." India has its own share of problems -- first with wheat and now with rice. Although there is a great commitment towards net zero by countries and corporates, the reality is that extreme weather events will only multiply as articulated by the IPCC report, he said. Elaborating on the opportunities for agriculture, Puri said by 2050 given the population growth and better consumption patterns, India will need 60 per cent more food. There is also a movement towards healthier and more nutritious food products that give the opportunity for value addition. Agriculture being a provider of bio-diesel which tackles climate change is another opportunity in India, he said. "India has the largest arable land in the world and there is a huge opportunity to multiply and grow our productivity levels. We are self-sufficient today and we also have the distinction of having exported Agri products worth $50 billion but I think we can do much more." On the pathways that Indian agriculture can traverse towards sustainable growth and productivity, Puri said, "There are some important pathways available to us to surmount the challenges. "One is the power of FPOs and the power of aggregation. The government of India has taken very far-sighted steps to promote FPOs with multi-dimensional schemes to support capacity building and value addition. This is the pivot that will transform Indian agriculture." The Indian cricket board will be expecting the two new <keyword id="6354312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPL" source="Orion">IPL</keyword> franchises to go for Rs 7000 crore to Rs 10,000 crore each after the bidding process begins here on Monday. It is still not clear whether the BCCI will announce the successful bidders on Monday itself after doing the technical evaluation of the bids. There are 22 companies which have picked up tender document worth Rs 10 lakh but with base price for new teams pegged at INR 2000 crore, there is expected to be only five to six serious bidders in fray. The BCCI is also allowing a consortium of up to three companies/individuals to bid for a franchise. However, in case of an individual or company, that particular entity's annual turnover should be minimum INR 3000 crore and in case of consortium, each of the three entities should have an annual turnover of INR 2500 crore. In this scenario, one of India's richest business tycoon <keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword> and his Adani Group are expected to bid for the Ahmedabad franchise. Adani Group, if they finally put up a bid, are the favourites to own a new franchise. Similarly, RPSG group which is headlined by billionaire Sanjiv Goenka are also considered to be serious bidders for a new franchise. Whether RPSG would have any individual or other company as a part of consortium is still not known. "Gautam Adani and Sanjiv Goenka are the biggest names in the Indian industry. They will be serious bidders. Expect a minimum bid of INR 3500 crore from the potential bidders. Don't forget that IPL broadcast rights is projected around USD 5 billion (Rs 36,000 Crore). "So the economics will work accordingly as franchises get the TV revenue share equally," a BCCI insider tracking the developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity. For the record, Goenka owned the <keyword id="12377413" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pune-franchise-rising-pune-supergiants" source="Orion">Pune Franchise Rising Pune Supergiants</keyword> (RPS) for two years and is also the owner of ISL franchise ATK Mohun Bagan. The other notable companies which are in fray comprise Kotak group, pharmaceutical majors Aurobindo Pharma and Torrent group. The two cities that are favourites in terms of stadium capacity are <keyword id="10818893" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi-stadium" source="Orion">Narendra Modi Stadium</keyword> in Motera with more than 100,000 capacity while the other is Ekana Stadium in Lucknow with 70,000 capacity. The company claims to be the first profitable player in the payments bank space to hit the Indian stock market. Paytm is another payments bank firm in line to get listed soon. Although Paytm has received SEBI’s nod, it is yet to announce dates to launch its initial public offering (IPO). “We are the only scheduled payment bank, which is profitable, we have set up the bank on very low capital,” said Rishi Gupta, managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of the payment bank. Paytm is one strong competitor for the firm, but its drawback is it is still making losses while Fino Payments Bank has turned profitable in FY21. Paytm reported a loss of ₹1700 crore in FY21. Fino Payments Bank has been operational for over four years now. The payment bank offers a diverse range of financial services including current account and savings account (CASA), micro ATMs, Aadhaar enabled payment system (AePS) transactions, domestic remittances etc., that are primarily digital. <div type="image" title="fino chart 3" height="900" width="1200" msid="87280392" hostid="261"></div> The bank operates through over 6.41 lakh merchants’ network, 143 customer service points and 54 branches across pan India. Mumbai, Jun 26 () The rupee appreciated 14 paise to 75.51 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday tracking positive domestic equities and gains in Asian currencies amid weakness in the greenback. Forex traders said buying in domestic equity market and weak American dollar supported the local unit. The rupee opened on a strong note at the interbank forex market at 75.51 against the US dollar, up 14 paise over its last close. It had settled at 75.65 against the US dollar on Thursday. "The rupee is back in the familiar trading range of 75.40-75.95 that prevailed for a long time just prior to the spike above 76 on India-China border tensions. Intra-day USDINR is likely to trade 75.35-75.70 range with a down side bias," said Abhishek Goenka, Founder and CEO, IFA Global. Goenka further added that "today (Friday) is the exchange traded currency derivative expiry for June. Month-end exporter-selling would likely cap upside. Asian currencies are stronger against the USD." Forex traders said rising number of COVID-19 cases and its impact on global as well as domestic economy is weighing on investor sentiment. The number of cases around the world linked to the disease has crossed 96.09 lakh and the death toll has topped 4.88 lakh. Meanwhile, in India, the death toll due to COVID-19 rose to 15,301 and the number of the number of infections rose to 4,90,401, according to the health ministry. On the equities front, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex was quoting 325.95 points higher at 35,168.05 and broader Nifty rose 102.85 points to 10,391.75. Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market, as they sold equity shares worth Rs 1,050.61 crore on Thursday, according to provisional exchange data. Mumbai, Jun 15 () The rupee depreciated 13 paise to 75.97 against the US dollar in opening trade on Monday as weak domestic equities and sustained foreign fund outflows weighed on investor sentiment. Forex traders said risk appetite has waned amid fresh cases of COVID-19 globally. The rupee opened weak at 75.93 at the interbank forex market. It fell further to 75.97 against the US dollar, down 13 paise over its last close. It had settled at 75.84 against the US dollar on Friday. "There has been a fresh spike in coronavirus cases in Tokyo, Beijing and the US and this is weighing on risk sentiment," said Abhishek Goenka, Founder and CEO, IFA Global. Goenka further said that India's forex reserves crossed the USD 500 billion, rising USD 8 billion in the week ended June 5. "This shows how aggressively the Reserve Bank of India has been absorbing Inflows. The reserve cushion would give the central bank ammunition in containing volatility during bouts of outflows," he said. Meanwhile, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex was trading 387.08 points lower at 33,393.81 and the broader NSE Nifty fell 105.95 points to 9,866.95. Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market as they sold shares worth Rs 1,311.49 crore on Friday, according to provisional exchange data. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 2.12 per cent to USD 37.91 per barrel. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.28 per cent to 97.04. Meanwhile, investor sentiment remained fragile amid rising coronavirus cases across the world. India saw a jump of over 11,000 cases for the third consecutive day on Monday, taking the total number of infections to over 3.32 lakh, while the death toll rose to 9,520 with 325 more fatalities, the Health Ministry said. Rupee slips 13 paise to 75.97 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai, Jan 24 () State-run Bank of Baroda (BoB) on Friday reported a net loss of Rs 1,407 crore for the quarter ended December on account of higher provisioning for bad loans.
 The bank had reported profit after tax of Rs 436 crore in the same period last year.
 BoB amalgamated Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank with it from April 1, 2019.
 "We have had a bit of a rough quarter because of the impact of the divergence, which was there on the provision and on the profit but if you look at the year-on-year figure they seem to stand out well," the bank's newly appointed managing director and CEO Sanjiv Chadha told reporters. 
 Provisions for bad loans rose 47 per cent to Rs 6,621 crore from Rs 4,505 crore last year. 
 Total provisions increased by 54 per cent to Rs 6,365 crore as against Rs 4,133 crore.
 Net interest margin improved by 18 basis points to 2.80 per cent from 2.62 per cent in the year-ago quarter.
 Net interest income (NII) grew 9 per cent to Rs 7,128 crore.
 The bank's gross NPA ratio declined to 10.43 per cent as against 10.91 per cent in the last quarter, while net NPA stood at 4.05 per cent as against 4.79 per cent. 
 Fresh slippages in the quarter stood at Rs 10,387 crore, of which Rs 4,509 crore was on account of divergence found by the Reserve Bank of India for the period ended March 31, 2019. 
 Divergence in provision for NPAs was at Rs 4,090 crore.
 During the December quarter, there were three NBFC accounts worth Rs 2,900 crore, one chemical company worth Rs 2,700 crore and two power companies worth Rs 1,000 crore that slipped into NPA.
 The bank's telecom sector exposure stood at Rs 4,100 crore. 
 The SMA 2 (special mention account 2) watchlist stood at Rs 10,832 crore. 
 Capital adequacy ratio stood at 13.48 per cent and CET-1 (common equity tier-1) at 9.85 per cent as on December 31, 2019.
 Domestic deposits were up 1.3 per cent at Rs 7,82,070 crore, while advances stood at Rs 5,44,726 crore at the end of December.

Mumbai, Jun 19 () The rupee depreciated 15 paise to 76.29 against the US dollar in opening trade on Friday tracking its Asian peers, even as the domestic equity market was in the positive territory. Forex traders said positive domestic equities supported the rupee, but factors like rising coronavirus cases and border tension with China weighed on the local unit. The rupee opened at 76.28 against the US dollar, then fell further to 76.29 against the US dollar, down 15 paise over its previous close. It had settled at 76.14 against the greenback on Thursday. "Most Asian currencies were weak against the greenback this morning as the US dollar extended gains supported by safe haven appeal and could weigh on the domestic unit," said Abhishek Goenka, Founder and CEO, IFA Global. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.03 per cent to 97.38. The 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex was trading 103.97 points higher at 34,312.02 and broader NSE Nifty rose 34.70 points to 10,126.35. Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital market as they bought shares worth Rs 366.57 crore on Thursday, according to provisional exchange data. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.89 per cent to USD 41.88 per barrel. Meanwhile, investor sentiment remained fragile amid rising coronavirus cases across the world. The number of cases around the world linked to the disease has crossed 84.64 lakh and the death toll has topped 4.53 lakh.
