India's 'sanjeevni-booti' hydroxychloroquine can have life-threatening adverse effects, says a new study

The pharma companies are now planning to increase it to 40 crore by producing twice the amount of APIs, at 80 tons. The move comes as the demand for the ‘wonder drug’ increases amid <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> scare, the Gujarat state board of the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association (IDMA) told Pharmbiz. The ingredients thus prepared shall be available for domestic sales and export. “As far as our industry sources are concerned 67 manufacturers were granted licences to bring out formulations of HCQ, with 32 licences for domestic sale and 35 for exports. Till now the state was producing roughly 20 crores tablets, HCQ 200 mg, in every month using 40 tons of APIs supplied by Zydus, Vital and Mangalam. This figure is going to be doubled from next month as we are increasing the production of raw materials to 80 tons in next month when our production of the finished products will go up to 40 crores,” Viranchi Shah, chairman of Gujarat, IDMA said. When Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation on March 19 asking people to participate in a Janata Curfew — Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan immediately announced income transfer of ₹2,400 to 55 lakh residents, setting up 1000 free food stalls to feed the needy for free and provide others basic nutrition at ₹20 a meal; and ₹2000 crore for MGNREGA workers over the next 2 months, among other measures. Even though it was one of the first states to implement a partial lockdown and enforce social distancing, many criticized it for taking longer to close down bars, pubs and liquor shops. Others feel that the state’s decentralised healthcare system has already done a lot to tackle the problem. All in all, it became one of the few states to have taken quick action and measures to control the pandemic.
