New Delhi [India], January 5 (ANI): A recent case study conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow, commissioned by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), unveils a success story for the Indian <keyword id="138116" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toy-industry" source="Orion">toy industry</keyword> in the fiscal year 2022-23. The study indicates a notable decline of 52 per cent in toy imports and an impressive surge of 239 per cent in toy exports compared to the fiscal year 2014-15. The report credits the government's dedicated efforts in the past six years for creating a more favourable manufacturing ecosystem for the Indian toy industry. During this period, the number of manufacturing units doubled, reducing dependence on imported inputs from 33 per cent to 12 per cent. Furthermore, gross sales value witnessed a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10 per cent, accompanied by an overall increase in labour productivity. The findings highlight India's emergence as a prominent player in the global toy value chain, evident in the country's integration into the global toy value chain and zero-duty market access for domestically manufactured <keyword id="25284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toys" source="Orion">toys</keyword> in nations like the UAE and Australia. The report positions India as a viable alternative to established toy hubs like China and Vietnam. To solidify its position in the global market, the report emphasizes the need for consistent collaborative efforts between the toy industry and the government. Key areas identified include technological advancements, e-commerce integration, partnerships and exports, brand-building investments, engagement with educators and parents for effective communication with children, valuing cultural diversity, and collaboration with regional artisans. The Indian government has implemented various interventions and initiatives to foster growth in the toy industry. These include the formulation of a comprehensive National Action Plan for Toys (NAPT) with 21 specific action points, increases in Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on toys, sample testing of each import consignment by the <keyword id="19992660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="directorate-general-of-foreign-trade" source="keywords">Directorate General of Foreign Trade</keyword> (DGFT) to curb sub-standard imports, issuance of a Quality Control Order (QCO) for toys in 2020, and support through cluster-based approaches. The report indicates significant interest from global retail giant Walmart to import toys from India and sell them worldwide. Walmart has set a target of USD 10 billion for overall imports from India, including Indian toys. With the concerted efforts of the government and domestic manufacturers, the Indian toy industry is projected to witness substantial growth in the next five years. DPIIT Secretary mentions that the global toys industry stands at around USD 300 billion, whereas India holds around USD 1.5 billion. <keyword id="6358032" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="spicejet" source="Orion">SpiceJet</keyword>, which is facing headwinds, on Wednesday reported widening of net loss to Rs 789 crore in the June quarter as high fuel prices and rupee depreciation adversely impacted the budget carrier. Amid the financial turmoil, the airline plans to raise USD 200 million, which is around Rs 1,600 crore at current exchange rates and expects to complete the hiving-off of its profitable cargo business into a separate company in the current quarter. In continuing woes for the carrier, aviation watchdog DGCA on Wednesday deregistered two more <keyword id="6357957" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> 737 planes of SpiceJet, following non-payment of dues to lessors. With the latest deregistration, a total of six Boeing 737 aircraft of the budget carrier have been deregistered in August. The crisis-hit airline has also delayed payment of salaries to staff for the second straight month. However, SpiceJet said it has started crediting salaries from today and like the previous month, "salary will be credited in a graded format". Moreover, in the independent auditor's review report of the airline's latest quarterly results, it has been mentioned that there are indications of material uncertainties "that may cast significant doubt about the group's ability to continue as a going concern". On Wednesday, the airline also said that its Chief Financial Officer Sanjeev Taneja has resigned. The low-cost carrier had a net loss of Rs 729 crore in the quarter ended June 2021. In the latest June quarter, the net loss is Rs 420 crore, excluding forex adjustment. "Total revenue for the reported quarter was Rs 2,478 crore as against Rs 1,266 crore, a year-on-year growth of 126 per cent, in the same quarter of the previous year," the airline said in a release. The airline, which had delayed its March quarter and FY2022 earnings, saw its net loss widen to Rs 458 crore in the 2022 March quarter from Rs 235.3 crore in the year-ago period. For the full fiscal year 2021-22, the net loss surged 73 per cent to Rs 1,725 crore from Rs 998.30 crore in the comparable period. According to the airline, business was severely impacted by the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic and high fuel prices in the March quarter. SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director <keyword id="6357826" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ajay-singh" source="Orion">Ajay Singh</keyword> said the industry has been witness to one of the most severe operating environment in the recent past, which impacted the progress and recovery made in the third quarter of FY2022. In the June quarter, jet fuel prices rose 105 per cent on a year-on-year basis and 40 per cent on a sequential basis, the airline said. "We are optimistic about our future and our continued recovery and in order to achieve our future plans, the board has mandated fresh capital issuance and the company will be shortly engaging with investment bankers for a potential raise of up to USD 200 million," he said. The airline's cargo arm <keyword id="6866514" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="spicexpress" source="Orion">SpiceXpress</keyword> was in black during the first quarter of the current fiscal. It reported a net profit of Rs 18 crore. Cargo revenues rose 74 per cent to Rs 1,944 crore in FY2022. "We will soon conclude the hive-off of cargo business into a separate independent company, SpiceXpress in the current quarter which will be followed by capacity enhancement with additional freighter aircraft within FY2023," Singh said. Meanwhile, certain concerns have been flagged in the independent auditor report of the company's quarterly results. "... the group has an incurred net loss (after other comprehensive income) of Rs 7,827.82 million during the quarter ended 30 June 2022 and, as of that date, the group's accumulated losses amounts to Rs 67,471.11 million, which have resulted in complete erosion of its net worth and the current liabilities have exceeded its current assets by Rs 67,719.67 million as at 30 June 2022," it said. According to the report, these conditions and other matters indicate the existence of a material uncertainties that may cast significant doubt about the Group's ability to continue as a going concern. Singh said that despite the complex operating environment and highest-ever input costs, SpiceJet has been able to sustain its operations. "Last year was a period of restructuring and settlements and we successfully completed and implemented settlements with most of our major partners, including manufacturers and lessors setting the stage for our seamless growth and expansion. "As we move ahead, we are encouraged with the strong travel demand and our focus for the next year would be to induct more fuel-efficient Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft and concentrate on our regional and international routes," he added. In recent months, SpiceJet has been facing turbulent times, including financial headwinds. In July, the regulator directed the airline to operate only 50 per cent of flights in the wake of many of its planes facing technical issues. A fresh controversy over ‘fake votes’ in Muzaffarnagar is scuffing the scars of the 2013 riots on the first day of polling

Once the verdict was announced pronouncing him as guilty, a visibly shaken and crestfallen <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> was asked by the Judge if he wanted to say anything. To which Salman said, “I was not driving the car.” This, even as he kept gesturing to his sisters <keyword id="2053" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alvira">Alvira</keyword> and Arpita to not breakdown and cry in court. 
 
Everything now boils down to how many years will he have to serve in prison. The biggest and the most serious charge that he has been found guilty of is under Section 304(2) of the IPC, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder that carries with it a maximum jail term of 10 years. 
 
While the sentencing is awaited today, Salman’s defence have been pleading for a lenient jail term of 2 years with a hefty fine/compensation for the affected peoples’ families. The pleas that the superstar’s counsel is making are primarily on two grounds. First, that this incident was mainly an aberration to the ‘human’ personality that Salman Khan is. The counsel have been pleading to the Judge to consider the ‘humanitarian’ work that Salman has been doing which has been bringing about such positive changes to several lives. This despite, Salman giving strict instructions to his counsel not to publicize or use his humanitarian work as a reason for lowering his jail term. The defense told the court, "Don't punish him more just because he is an actor. Enhance the fine but don't punish him beyond 3 years." 
 The second and more important plea being made pertains again to two very high profile hit and run cases similar to this one. The first being the 1998 <keyword id="45587" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sanjeev-Nanda">Sanjeev Nanda</keyword> <keyword id="6355119" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BMW">BMW</keyword> case where Nanda ran over and killed six people including 3 police officers in Delhi and the second one being the <keyword id="574170" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alistair-Pereira">Alistair Pereira</keyword> case in Mumbai, where the latter mowed down and killed 7 people on the pavement. In both cases the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> handed out jail terms of 2 and 3 years respectively, despite the accused being under the influence of alcohol and behind the wheels when the incidents occurred. The counsel has argued that in both the above cases 6-7 people were killed with no signs of any compensation to the affected people's families, while this incident involves the death of only one person and a compensation pacjkage of Rs 19 lakh that has already been paid by Salman to the concerned people. 
 The prosecution, in the meanwhile, has pleaded with the judge to hand out the most stringent punishment, not taking his social work into consideration. The court has even ordered for perjury charges to be filed against Salman's <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword>, <keyword id="167070" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashok-Singh">Ashok Singh</keyword>.

New Delhi, Mar 6 () The central government on Friday asked people not to pay attention to false rumours that the novel coronavirus was spreading through non-vegetarian food like eggs, chicken, mutton and seafood. Union Fisheries, Dairying and Animal Husbandry Minister Giriraj Singh said even the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) as well as the Indian food safety regulator FSSAI have said there was no scientific evidence to prove transmission of coronavirus from animals to humans."The false rumour has hit thousands of farmers engaged in this business. The livelihood of farmers and the people engaged in the entire value chain have been affected. I humbly request people not to fall prey to such rumours," Singh told reporters.The industry has estimated about Rs 2,000 crore a day loss in the poultry sector alone as prices of chicken have declined by about 70 per cent in just a month alone to Rs 30 per kg in the wholesale market, he said.An order issued by the Lucknow District Magistrate recently on maintaining general hygiene in the poultry sector was "misread"and "misinterpreted" in the media which created further panic among people, he added.The consumption of Indian poultry products including eggs is safe and a general hygiene, however, must be maintained," Singh said.Minister of State for Fisheries, Dairying and Animal Husbandry Sanjeev Balyan also urged people not to believe such rumours spread through social media.Even maize and soya farmers are affected as these products are used as animal feed in the poultry sector, he added. Eating non-veg food doesn't cause coronavirus infection: Giriraj Singh

By Sanjeev Chopra New Delhi, May 17 () Around 10 lakh jobs have been lost in Punjab and the state is set to lose a whopping Rs 50,000 crore this year due to the coronavirus lockdown, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said on Sunday while hinting at some "tough measures" for revenue generation. In an interview to , Singh said the state was losing Rs 3,000 crore every month on the economic front. The CM said with some experts predicting a peak in coronavirus pandemic in July and August, Punjab was preparing itself "for the worst", and the massive influx of migrants and Indian returnees from abroad was emerging as the top disease management challenge. "In April alone, we lost 88 per cent of our estimated revenue due to the lockdown. As per quick estimates, we are losing Rs 3,000 crore a month, and are looking at Rs 50,000 crore minimum in losses for the full year," Singh said. As for the job losses, he said, "initial estimates suggest the figure to be in the range of around 10 lakh, but clarity will come only once the COVID situation starts stabilizing". Noting that the financial situation is "extremely critical", Singh said he has already asked all the 'non-essential' departments to cut down on expenses and manage their costs judiciously. "But, that is obviously not enough, so we will have to take some tough decisions," he said referring to fresh taxation measures. He said discussions are in progress and the state is mulling various options and will take a decision in the next couple of days. Singh called for an urgent economic package for the states, saying with no GST, excise duty or VAT coming from transportation, all resources have dried up. Punjab is seeing the situation worsening going forward, unless the Centre steps in, the chief minister said. "I don't know why they have not announced a relief package or revenue grant for states so far. We need funds to manage not just our routine expenses but the huge challenge of COVID from medical and humanitarian point of view. We need money immediately but it has not been forthcoming so far," he said. A day after Punjab extended the coronavirus lockdown till May 31 with some curfew relaxations, the chief minister said the state was preparing for the worst with some experts predicting a peak in July/August, even stretching to September. Noting that there is no direct correlation between the curfew relaxations and the spurt in cases, the CM said the "biggest challenge right now is the large influx of people from other states and outside India". "Till May 22, 10 flights are expected to bring in Punjabis, and the total number, as per MEA estimates, is 20,000," he said, adding that while the originating state is expected to test migrants for coronavirus before sending them out, "we don't really know how dependable that is"."As we saw in the case of Nanded pilgrims, when the Maharashtra government failed to do the necessary testing. That is true even for NRIs coming from various countries," the CM said. He said the state has to make extensive arrangements for quarantining and testing all of the returnees, putting a huge pressure on limited resources. The chief minister attributed the recent surge in cases to large number of people coming from outside. "We had the original spike when NRIs came initially, in February-March, and the second wave came with the Tablighi Jamaat. "Things were settling down when we again saw an increase in cases due to those returning from Nanded and Rajasthan, including pilgrims, migrants and students. "And now we are staring at another huge spike with all those NRIs and Punjabi migrants from other states coming back to our state," he said. The doctors informed the ministers that Gajendra Singh was brought dead. 
 
The tech savvy Modi expressed grief over the suicide on twitter. The news report further says, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi pipped Nadda and Baliyan to the post by reaching the hospital before them. 
 In fact Home Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> has already held a meeting with <keyword id="603012" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-governor">Delhi Governor</keyword> Najeeb Jung and <keyword id="6366315" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Police-Commissioner">Police Commissioner</keyword> BS Bassi on the matter this morning, with widespread protests ringing out in the capital. He is also expected to make a statement in the Parliament later in the day. 
 
Will Home Minister’s insurance scheme be a healing touch to the aggrieved farmers? 
 
In the wake of the farmer crisis in the country, the home minister Rajnath Singh is fast-tracking the introduction of the proposed National Crop Income Insurance Scheme, which guarantees income to the farmer during fluctuating prices (he will have to bear loss of 20%). During yield losses due to natural calamities, including drought or unseasonal rain 70-50% of loss would be paid by the government. It also brings all national insurance programmes under its purview and the government wishes to roll it out soon given the present crisis. 
 
Singh had held a meeting on Wednesday with the Minister of State for Agriculture, Sanjiv Balyan, and bureaucrats of the ministry to finalise contours of the proposed insurance scheme for farmers. 
 
An Assocham-SkymWeather study released earlier this month revealed only 19% of farmers have opted for crop insurance while among the rest, 24% said the facility was not available and 11% said they can't afford the premium. There have been five national schemes since 1985, and all have failed with farmers left with no safety net when crops fail. 
 A serious case like farmer suicide, right in the middle of an ongoing political rally motioned at opposing the land acquisition bill has certainly put a big question mark on Modi’s signature land bill. While opposing parties have already started protesting the Land Bill and demanding justice for Gajendra Singh, the whole furore looks like an acid test of the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> on the issue of agricultural lands and people dependent on it. In a chain reaction of yesterday’s tragedy, the Congress workers are staging protests in front of Delhi CM’s residence and Delhi Police Commissioner’s residence demanding immediate scrapping of the proposed land bill.

What happens to the Land Bill now?

Convicted of killing one person and injuring 5 others, a <keyword id="2838854" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sessions-Court-in-Bombay">Sessions Court in Bombay</keyword> today sentenced <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> to 5 years in jail, with no more compensation required to be paid to the victims’ families. Given that the jail term exceeds 3 years, there will be no immediate bail provided. Salman’s team of defence counsel will have to appeal to the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword>. It is unlikely that the Bombay High Court will be able to hear the bail plea today. The Bombay High Court is also expected to go on vacation in a few days, while the <keyword id="166190" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="vacation-judge">vacation judge</keyword> has limited powers. At best, it could be a few days to weeks for Salman behind bars before he manages to get out on bail. 
Salman Khan, now, is likely to be taken for finger printing, followed by a medical check-up, post which he will be sent behind bars. But this is not Salman’s last legal resort. Post securing the bail, he has the option of appealing against the <keyword id="6366930" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Session-Court">Session Court</keyword>’s judgement at the Bombay High Court. Even after that, the last resort would be an appeal at the country’s apex court, the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword>. 
Salman has been found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Salman’s counsel is expected to move the Bombay High Court now, having already come prepared for the worst. This despite his counsel trying its best to ensure that Salman didn’t get sentenced to more than 2 years in jail. Earlier in the day, Salman’s defence pleaded for a lenient jail term of 2 years with a hefty fine/compensation for the affected peoples’ families. The pleas that the superstar’s counsel made were primarily on two grounds. First, that this incident was mainly an aberration to the ‘human’ personality that Salman Khan is. The counsel pleaded to the Judge to consider the ‘humanitarian’ work that Salman has been doing bringing about such positive changes to several lives. The counsel even pleaded, “Don’t punish him more just because he is an <keyword id="271" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="actor">actor</keyword>.” 
The second and more important plea being made pertains again to two very high profile hit and run cases similar to this one. The first being the 1998 Sanjeev Nanda BMW case where Nanda ran over and killed six people including 3 police officers in Delhi and the second one being the Alistair Pereira case in Mumbai, where the latter mowed down and killed 7 people on the pavement. In both cases the Supreme Court handed out jail terms of 2 and 3 years respectively, despite the accused being under the influence of alcohol and behind the wheels when the incidents occurred. In the meanwhile, the court dismissed any perjury case to be filed against Salman’s <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword> <keyword id="167070" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashok-Singh">Ashok Singh</keyword>.
