Now, it’s hoping to turn things around with the <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/apple-appoints-nokia-veteran-ashish-chowdhary-to-lead-india-operations/66605832">appointment</a> of their new Country Manager for India, Ashish Chowdhary. After Sanjay Kaul stepped down last year, Michel Coulomb, an Apple veteran, was brought on board to oversee Indian sales operations. Chowdhary, who was previously the Chief Customer Operations Officer (CCOO) at Nokia, will take over the helm come January 2019. Executives in a local unit of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Apple&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Apple</a> are not satisfied with the company and in this backdrop, eight senior managers in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Kolkata+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Kolkata </a>unit of <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> have resigned within past two months. 
 As per industry executives, dissatisfaction has cropped up among few employees as the new country head <keyword id="72575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Kaul">Sanjay Kaul</keyword> is emphasising on recruiting talent from consulting background and building huge pressure on sales target. 
 Among the exits, two of the executives were in the select group of Apple's country leadership for the Indian market. V <keyword id="3515616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="anandkumar">Anandkumar</keyword> was the head of sales planning and support, while Vickram Bedi was heading sales with focus on consumers, small and medium businesses, corporate resellers and distribution. Anandkumar has taken an early retirement, while Bedi is serving notice period. Two national business managers, Pavan Kareti and <keyword id="4056570" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="samidha-gupta">Samidha Gupta</keyword>, have also quit. Kareti used to manage all the franchisee partners for <keyword id="1614217" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-Premium-Resellers">Apple Premium Resellers</keyword>, which is a global initiative wherein select Apple exclusive stores are designed and operated as per global parameters and benchmarks. Gupta was responsible for accessories and the <keyword id="163880" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-TV">Apple TV</keyword> business. 
 Others include VineKumar, who was account manager for monobrand retail that includes the franchise-led Apple exclusive stores, and <keyword id="1328684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raja-Basu">Raja Basu</keyword>, who was heading sales for South and North. Rajesh Marwaha, the head of mentor training that involves training sales staff at the store level, and Aparna Sareen who led new store development and marketing programmes for the Apple exclusive brand stores, have also quit. 
 
Reportedly, six more people at the mid-management level had resigned and several others were looking for a change. 
 
"Apple is one of the good pay masters in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+consumer+electronics+sector&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian consumer electronics sector</a>. While some more senior executives are on the lookout, the problem they are facing is matching salary levels, more so now when the market itself is down,” one of them told ET.

It's time for a revamp. </li><li>Company plans to blacklist any retailer that picks up discounted stock from a wholesaler. </li><li>They also want to do away with neighbourhood stores as they do not offer a complete sales experience.</li></ul> <keyword id="481409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-India">Apple India</keyword> is all out for a <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/tech/apple-reins-in-smaller-retailers-to-choke-discounts/articleshow/65002858.cms">sales revamp</a>. It will now be blacklisting any retailer that picks up stock from a wholesaler at a discounted price. This is being done to check the rapid sales expansion of Apple products into small neighbourhood stores and to sell at the maximum retail price, like Apple does in the US. This move by the <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword> maker will take <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> back to the earlier practice during which the retailers could offer discounts only under the Apple-backed consumer promotion strategies. The company also plans to clamp down on wide availability of products and neighbourhood stores and is looking to sell only via stores that provide a complete sales experience. For starters, they stopped selling the Mac computers from these stores last year. Last month, they also tightened their distribution by bringing down their national distributors from five to two. They have linked the retailers’ billing system with a distributor so that retailers cannot buy from unauthorised sources. If the retailer does not follow the sales terms, it will not be eligible to offer affordability schemes like EMI (equated monthly instalment) and cashback to consumers and their supplies might also be stopped. Distributors will face restrictions as well - they cannot sell out of their ‘territory’ or undertake any wholesale deals. The aim is to bring the focus back on large exclusive stores, Apple authorised multi brand stores and retail chains since these can offer the right sales experience. Apple will sell only in limited neighbourhood stores that generally sell multiple brands. This also means that the company will be very selective in choosing partners for its customised smaller exclusive Apple stores a 1,000 of which it plans to open pan-India. The previous India Sales head, Sanjay Kaul, had been trying to push sales through discounts and rapid expansion. His strategy didn't seem to work since its smartphone market share remained stagnant at 2-3% over the last five years. Several of Apple’s trade partners also felt that the discounting was eroding product prices and favouring online stores. It diluted the brand’s ‘premiumness’ or brand identity and led to a decline in the average selling price when competition in the ₹30,000-plus Indian smartphone market was at an all time high led by Samsung, OnePlus, Google, or even by brands like Xiaomi and Oppo. Therefore, the “cleaning up exercise” is going to be executed by Michel Coulomp who replaced Kaul, in December. To execute the exercise, Apple has made a lot of changes in its team. With the exit of three senior sales executives, Apple might put in place a new sales team. Other mid-level sales executives are also expected to departure soon. Apple has also created a new sales audit team under the chief financial officer Gaurav Duggal. The team will be randomly picking products to ensure that there is foolproof compliance of its sale processes across all retailers and wholesalers. Though Apple is trying this “clean up”to deliver a complete sales experience that would in turn help its stagnant smartphone market share, it may not be the best idea. Bloomberg believes that Apple might be in this situation as it has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/apple-is-failing-spectacularly-in-one-of-the-worlds-biggest-smartphone-markets/articleshow/65007599.cms">failed to develop</a> important carrier relationships and iPhones are especially expensive in India due to customs tariffs. Therefore, clamping down on the small retailers may not be a solution to the larger problem.

"There are more than 300,000 general trade shops selling mobile phones in the country and they are spread out in every nook and corner of India. Apple's chief of operations in India reportedly quit after just one and a half years

Cook started the much talked about India tour with a pre-dawn visit to Mumbai’s iconic Shree Siddhivinayak Temple at Prabhadevi, an Indian Express <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/tech-news-technology/exclusive-apple-ceo-tim-cook-mumbai-india-visit-2806261/">report</a> said. This comes on a pretty hectic day for the Apple CEO as he has a slew of business meetings with several Indian company heads. 
 
At the temple, Cook was seen with Apple India head Sanjay Kaul and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mukesh+Ambani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Mukesh </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mukesh+Ambani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ambani</a>’s son Anant Ambani. “LTE rollout in India just really began this year, and so we'll begin to see some really good networks coming on in India. That will unleash the power and capability of the iPhone in a way that an older network, a 2.5G, or even some 3G networks, would not do," Cook had said in a call to investors last month.

Cook’s India visit is no accident. It’s a planned strategic business tour that will see him personally engaging with top brass business leaders and politicians. He’ll try to convince telcos to sell more iPhones, and woo politicians to allow Apple to sell refurbished iPhones in the country. 
 
After Mumbai, Cook is expected to travel to Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi later this week. He’s also expected to meet Prime Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Narendra Modi</a> during the trip. However, there is no official confirmation from Apple.
