Malhotra said that the exercise is not linked to bringing a new <keyword id="22542056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="direct-taxes-code" source="keywords">direct taxes code</keyword>, but a comprehensive review of the <keyword id="6354751" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Income-Tax" source="Orion">income tax</keyword> law. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget speech earlier this week announced that a comprehensive review of the Income-tax Act, 1961 will be completed in six months. "The purpose is to make the Act concise, lucid, easy to read and understand. This will reduce disputes and litigation, thereby providing tax certainty to the taxpayers. It will also bring down the demand embroiled in litigation," Sitharaman said. To a question whether the review would mean that the government will come with a direct tax code, Malhotra said "It is not a new direct tax code... It is a comprehensive review". He said the first draft of the <keyword id="22542055" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="simplified-Income-Tax" source="Orion">simplified income tax</keyword> law, post the review, would be prepared by an internal committee of the tax department. Being an absolute fool for historical fiction that I am, the announcement of a period drama with a prominent female cast set in pre-Independence India had me dancing a little jig. The fact that this was the Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s labour of love was the icing on the cake, with the amazing cast being the cherry on the top. However, when Heeramandi hit our screens, it quickly became apparent that no amount of grandeur, powerful acting or even Aditi Rao Hydari’s mesmerising gaja gamini walk was going to be able to save the show. Heeramandi draws inspiration from the lives of tawaifs in Lahore's famed red-light district, with its first season unfolding against the backdrop of India's struggle for independence. The ensemble cast featured talents such as Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadda, among others. Season 1 takes off on a high note, and does a fantastic job of capturing viewers in its web of opulence and beauty. It gets the set, costumes and choreographies right, but all these trappings that Bhansali employs to bring what he’d imagined to our screens turn out to be just, well, trappings. Instead of being glued to my seat as I’d expected, I found myself just reluctantly sitting through the show, looking for any excuse to abandon my seat. To put it plainly — and it hurts my tonsils to even say this after eagerly waiting for the show for months — Heeramandi was kinda boring. A few episodes in, it becomes increasingly obvious that Bhansali was more invested in the set design than a well-rounded screenplay. As nice as the performances delivered by the cast was, there was way too much happening, making it hard to keep track of what was going on in spite of the pacing being sluggish. Plenty of subplots were created but barely any efforts were made to see them to the end — the same applying to character design as well. For instance, despite trying her best to make up for it with her acting, the character arc of <keyword id="22012158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanjeeda-sheik" source="keywords">Sanjeeda Sheik</keyword>, who was playing Waheeda, was incomplete at best. What was especially jarring was the fact that the tawaifs, who were each rather self-absorbed by their own tumultuous personal lives for most of the show, abruptly decided to bury all their hatchets in the final episode of the season for the sake of azadi. The first season ended with the death of beloved characters like Bibbojaan and Nawab Tajdar. Heeramadi’s future hung in uncertainty as the Nawabs abandoned their patronage. Now, as viewers await the aftermath of these events, Sanjay Leela Bhansali hints that the new chapter will unfold with the tawaifs venturing into the worlds of Kolkata and Mumbai's film industries, trading their talents for new audiences. And I can’t help but be just the slightest bit apprehensive about the upcoming season. If the writing and pacing felt haphazard after Sanjay Leela Bhansali dreamt of making Heeramandi for 20 years and spent another three years making it, I shudder to think how the next season — which seems like an afterthought — would turn out. With a fresh plot on the horizon, audiences anticipate the introduction of new faces to enrich the narrative. The official teasers and trailers are yet to be released and the fate of surviving characters remains undisclosed, but it will be interesting to see if key actors will come back for Season 2. Viewers might be particularly curious to see if Mr Bhansali’s niece, <keyword id="20411932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sharmin-segal" source="keywords">Sharmin Segal</keyword>, would return as Alamzeb after all the criticism thrown her way. Will Mr Bhansali pull up his socks after all the criticism thrown his way or will Heeramandi Season 2 also rely on seasoned actors shouldering a choppy script? Only time will tell. I met Rani Mukerji the other day and (she) said 'Till you work with Sanjay Leela Bhasali, you don't know your own potential," she said. The makers of "Heeramandi" also released the character posters of Hydari as Bibbojaan, Shaikh as Waheeda, Sinha as Fareedan and Segal as Alamzeb. Bhansali was not present at the event. Working with Bhansali has been a wonderful dream, said Hydari. They earlier collaborated on 2018's "Padmaavat". "When we shoot a film, we get a certain amount of time to be with a director. When you shoot a show, you get that much more time. Some look at the look, beauty, but what I find incredible about the experience is the fact his soul goes into everything he does. "He eats, lives, and breathes his characters. There's so much passion. I'm grateful that the challenges that he throws at you, there's so much love, and pride, pushing you to do your best. I'm grateful for that experience and I hope I get it multiple times. I love him," she added. Shaikh said she is honoured to work with Bhansali on "Heeramandi". "I also had a dream (to work with Bhansali) and it has come true today. Everyone wants to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It's a big deal for me to be one of his leading ladies," she said. Segal, also Bhansali's niece, said as an artist, it's a privilege to work with the director. "Working with Sanjay sir on a series is a different ball game as an actor. It's not just one movie, (working on a series) it's like doing eight films. I've assisted sir on 'Bajirao Mastani', which was a movie, and watching him adapt to the format of the series, was a privilege." Sinha said she loved collaborating with Manisha and she learned a lot from the actor. "Manisha is such a wonderful person. The body of work that she has behind her, the work that she has done and the films of hers that we have seen. She is so respected, stunning, beautiful, elegant, just wow. "But keeping that aside, when I worked with her, I realised, she is a beautiful person, just the way she conducts herself on set. Watching her and being with her in the same frame was such a pleasure. I hope I can do it soon. It was an honour working with her," she said. Prerna Singh, CEO Bhansali Productions, said they have a great show in their hands. "Working with Sanjay sir is life altering... I can't even describe it... MPs and MLAs taking bribes to vote or make a speech in the <keyword id="19910021" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="house" source="keywords">House</keyword> are not immune from prosecution, the Supreme Court said on Monday in a landmark, unanimous verdict that overrules its 1998 judgment protecting such lawmakers. Observing that bribery is not protected by parliamentary privileges, a seven-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y <keyword id="19985698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandrachud" source="keywords">Chandrachud</keyword> held that a five-judge bench's interpretation in the 1998 verdict in the JMM bribery case was contrary to Articles 105 and 194 of the Constitution. Describing the judgment as "great", Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> said in a post on X that it would "ensure clean politics and deepen people's faith in the system". Articles 105 and 194 deal with the powers and privileges of MPs and MLAs in the Parliament and the legislative assemblies. "Corruption and bribery by members of the legislatures erode probity in public life," the CJI, who read the operative part of the verdict, said while pronouncing the verdict today. The bench also comprised Justices A S Bopanna, M M Sundresh, P S Narasimha, J B Pardiwala, <keyword id="19931190" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanjay-kumar" source="keywords">Sanjay Kumar</keyword> and Manoj Misra. In 1998, the five-judge constitution bench held in its majority verdict on the Narasimha Rao versus CBI case that parliamentarians have immunity against criminal prosecution for any speech made and vote cast inside the House under Articles 105(2) and 194(2). The seven-judge bench was reconsidering the 1998 judgement. While pronouncing the verdict, the CJI said Article 105 of the Constitution seeks to sustain an environment to have deliberations by the lawmakers in the House and this atmosphere is vitiated when a member is bribed to deliver a speech. Justice Chandrachud said the privileges claimed must have a nexus to the collective functioning of the House and must have a relationship with the essential functions of a legislator which he or she has to discharge. The seven-judge bench had reserved its judgement in the matter on October 5 last year. During the arguments, the Centre had submitted that bribery can never be a subject matter of immunity and a parliamentary privilege is not meant to place a lawmaker above law. The top court, in the course of the hearing, had said it will examine whether the immunity granted to lawmakers from prosecution for taking bribes to make a speech or vote in Parliament and state legislatures extends to them even if criminality is attached to their actions. On September 20, 2023, the <keyword id="19936355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apex-court" source="keywords">apex court</keyword> had agreed to reconsider its 1998 judgement, saying it was an important issue having a significant bearing on "morality of polity". The issue came under the apex court's lens in 2019, when a bench headed by then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was hearing an appeal filed by <keyword id="20405400" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sita-soren" source="keywords">Sita Soren</keyword>, JMM MLA from Jama and daughter-in-law of party chief Shibu <keyword id="19968807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="soren" source="keywords">Soren</keyword>. She was an accused in the JMM bribery scandal. The Gogoi-led bench had referred to a five-judge bench the matter, noting it had "wide ramification" and was of "substantial public importance". Sita Soren was accused of taking bribes to vote for a particular candidate in the Rajya Sabha election in 2012. She contended that the constitutional provision granting lawmakers immunity from prosecution, which saw her father-in-law being let off the hook in the JMM bribery scandal, be applied to her. She moved the apex court against the Jharkhand High Court order of February 17, 2014 refusing to quash the criminal case lodged against her. The three-judge bench had then said it will revisit the apex court verdict in the JMM bribery case involving Shibu Soren, a former Jharkhand chief minister and ex-union minister, and four other party MPs who had accepted bribes to vote against the no-confidence motion threatening the survival of the P V Narasimha Rao government in 1993. The Narasimha Rao government, which was in a minority, survived the no-confidence vote with their support. The CBI registered a case against Soren and four other JMM Lok Sabha MPs but the Supreme Court quashed it citing immunity from prosecution they enjoyed under Article 105(2) of the Constitution.
