New Delhi, Private sector <keyword id="6653" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="icici-bank" source="Orion">ICICI Bank</keyword> on Monday said the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> has approved the reappointment of <keyword id="128187" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sandeep-bakhshi" source="Orion">Sandeep Bakhshi</keyword> as Managing Director and CEO of the private lender for three years. The reappointment of <keyword id="321831" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bakhshi" source="Orion">Bakhshi</keyword> will be effective from October 4, 2023, till October 3, 2026, ICICI Bank said in a regulatory filing. The bank's shareholders have already approved the appointment of Bakhshi for three more years, it added.

the RBI suggests that the tenure of promoter CEOs should be limited to 10 years. Non-promoter CEOs should also only be allowed to stay on for no more than 15 years. Once the tenure is over, the RBI has given leeway for around two years allowing banks to appoint a successor — once the rules are finalised. “To build a robust culture of sound governance practice, professional management of banks and to adopt the principle of separating ownership from management, it is desirable to limit the tenure of the WTDs or CEOs,” RBI said in the discussion paper. If CEOs want to return to the helm, they will have to wait it out for three years before they can be reappointed. What does this mean for Uday Kotak? Uday Kotak, who has been Kotak Mahindra Bank’s executive vice-chairman and managing director since its inception in 2003-04, was re-designated as managing director and CEO in May 2018. That culminates in a total of 17 years that Uday Kotak leading the bank. If RBI’s new guidelines come into effect, Kotak may get another two years to name his successor. The brokerage firm Jefferies believes the most likely candidate for the position is Dipak Gupta, the current joint managing director. Uday Kotak has been in the midst of another stalemate with RBI to bring his stake in the bank down to 26%. Earlier in June, he sold off 56 million shares through a block deal, bringing his promoter stake down to 26.1% ⁠— after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/uday-kotak-to-sell-2-83-stake-in-kotak-mahindra-bank-sale-to-fetch-over-rs-6800-cr/articleshow/76141837.cms">multiple extensions</a> to the initial December 2018 deadline set by the RBI. However, he still has to trim around 0.1% in order to comply with RBI’s guidelines. RBI’s new regulations come after controversies led by Yes Bank, the Bank of Rajasthan and other promoter-sponsored banks have faced trouble in the recent past. New Delhi, Nov 28 () HDFC Bank on Thursday said it has formed a six-member committee to find a successor to Managing Director Aditya Puri who is set to retire in October next year.
 India's largest private sector lender HDFC Bank is on a global search to find a successor to the founding-chief executive Aditya Puri, as he would turn 70 next year.
 "The board of directors of the bank at its meeting held today has constituted a search committee to identify a successor to Aditya Puri, the current managing director of the bank, whose tenure ends on October 26, 2020," the bank said in a regulatory filing.
 The search committee will comprise Shyamala Gopinath, Sanjiv Sachar, M D Ranganath, Sandeep Parekh, Srikanth Nadhamuni and Keki Mistry representative of HDFC, the parent of the bank. Gopinath is the bank's chairperson.
 "The search committee, over the next few months, shall evaluate internal and external candidates to ensure smooth transition," the bank said.
 Puri will act as an advisor to the search committee, the bank said.
 It is noteworthy that Puri, the managing director and chief executive since 1994 when the bank was set up, has seen a whopping 41 per cent increase in total remuneration in 2019 to Rs 13.67 crore.
 He turns 70 next year and has been instrumental in getting the bank to its current stature as one of the most valued banks globally in terms of price to earnings ratio.
 Also there are reports that Puri, an ex-Citibanker, may continue as the non-executive chairman post retirement.
 Separately, the board of directors of the bank also approved appointments of Sashidhar Jagdishan and Bhavesh Zaveri as an additional directors and executive directors for a period of three years period each from November 28, 2019, subject to RBI approval. KPM SHW

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the Indian public sector banks had the "worst phase" under the combination of former Prime Minister <keyword id="6359397" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="manmohan-singh">Manmohan Singh</keyword> and RBI Governor <keyword id="6358908" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="raghuram-rajan">Raghuram Rajan</keyword>. Delivering a lecture at the prestigious Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs here on Tuesday, Sitharaman said that giving all the public sector banks a lifeline is today her primary duty. "I'm taking a minute to respond I do respect Raghuram Rajan as a great scholar who chose to be in the central bank in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> at a time when the Indian economy was all buoyant, Sitharaman said during the lecture organised by the Deepak and Neera Raj Centre on Indian Economic Policies of the Columbia University. Asked about Rajan's comments during a recent lecture at Brown University in which he had apparently mentioned that in its first term, the <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> government had not done better on the economy because the government was extremely centralised and the leadership does not appear to have a consistent articulated vision on how to achieve economic growth, the minister said instead there were major issues with bank loans during Rajan's tenure as the central bank head. "It was in Rajan's time as Governor of the Reserve Bank that loans were given just based on phone calls from crony leaders and public sector banks in India till today are depending on the government's equity infusion to get out of that mire," she said. "Dr Singh was the Prime Minister and I'm sure Dr Rajan will agree that Dr Singh would have had a consistent articulated vision' for India, she said amid laughter from the audience. "With due respect, I'm not making fun of anybody but I certainly want to put this forward for a comment which has come like this. I have no reason to doubt that Rajan feels for every word of what he is saying. And I'm here today, giving him his due respect, but also placing the fact before you that Indian public sector banks did not have a worst phase than when the combination of Singh and Rajan, as Prime Minister and the Governor of Reserve Bank, had. At that time, none of us knew about it, she said. Sitharaman said while she is grateful that Rajan did an asset quality review, but people should know what makes the banks ailing today. Very democratised leadership. The Prime Minister, after all is the first among equals in any cabinet". "You need to have a country as diverse as India with an effective leadership. A rather too democratic leadership, which probably will have the approval of quite a lot of liberals, I'm afraid, left behind such a nasty stink of corruption, which we are cleaning up even today," she said.
