New Delhi, Jan 20 () Consumer electronics major Samsung is investing Rs 3,500 crore to set up a smartphone display manufacturing unit in Noida.
Samsung India Electronics, the Indian unit of South Korean electronics giant, has transferred a land parcel of around 64,905 sq metres to Samsung Display, for a consideration of Rs 92.20 crore at its Noida plant, UP in two installments, according to the regulatory filings before the Registrar of Companies (RoC).
Besides, Samsung India Electronics has also granted a loan of Rs 3,500 crore to Samsung Display Noida (SDN) for a period of three years, according to documents sources by business intelligence platform Paper.vc.
"The parent entity of Samsung Noida Display Pvt Ltd Viz Samsung Display Company Ltd, korea has provided the coprorate guarantee equivalent to the loan amount to the company," the filing stated.
The draft corporate guarantee is to be issued by Samsung Display Co Ltd, korea, in favour of the company, it added.
Samsung Display Noida, a group entity of the company, which has been incorporated "with the principal business of manufacturing, assembling, processing and sales of displays (including their parts, components and accessories) for all types and sizes of electronic devices".
E-mails sent to Samsung India did not elicit a response.
To establish a manufacturing unit, it had approached Samsung India Electronics for transfer of land parcel.
Eungkyo Seo, wholetime director of the company is also a director of SDN, it added.
In the Indian handset market Samsung India competes with the likes of Xiaomi, OnePlus and LG in India.

According to the industry and trade executives, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=South+Korean+company+">South Korean company</a> has merged two of its three verticals of consumer electronics business and changed business heads in an unusual mid-year reshuffle ahead of the crucial festive season. 
 
The country's largest cell phone maker has merged the vertical that managed its own brand stores with retail sales that dealt with independent dealers and distributors. 
 They said the regional retail vertical, which caters to large regional chains such as Viveks, Adishwar Retail, Great Eastern and Vijay Sales, will continue as it is. <keyword id="1611492" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Alok-Pathak">Alok Pathak</keyword>, who was earlier heading the regional retail vertical, will now lead the combined portfolio of brand shops and retail sales. 
 Rajeev Bhutani, who used to head retail sales, has become vice-president for business strategy. <keyword id="3005442" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rakesh-Moza">Rakesh Moza</keyword> now heads the regional vertical, apart from his earlier role of heading modern retail that includes chains like <keyword id="152739" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Croma">Croma</keyword> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Reliance+Digital">Reliance Digital</a>. 
 
The sources said all these changes have been made in the last one month.

Mobile phones contributed 70% to Samsung India's Rs 40,392 crore revenues in 2013-14. The company has not yet disclosed the 2014-15 numbers. A top industry executive, who requested anonymity, said Hong — who in his last role was the president of Samsung's Latin America operations for three years — is evaluating possibilities of further restructuring the consumer electronics business if the current structure does not deliver result. 
 The company may then adopt the business structure it follows in the cell phone business where the business is divided as per geography, referred to as India One and India Two within Samsung, the person said. While Samsung may still be the <keyword id="139821" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="market-leader">market leader</keyword> in flat panel television, Sony has bridged the gap by launching smaller screen sizes specifically for India. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LG+">LG</a> remains the largest home appliances maker. 
 
A top executive in a rival firm is of the view that Samsung's white goods business was under pressure this year since consumers have cut back on spending while the Korean firm is more focused on the premium segment. "The company is trying to upgrade sales by launching high-end products with attractive consumer finance schemes and promotions, but consumer sentiments are still down and the company's margins are under pressure," the person said.

Samsung India knows this is now or never and its new changes reflect its future plans

<keyword id="135365" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung-Electronics">Samsung Electronics</keyword>, the multinational electronics company based in Suwon, South Korea, has appointmented <keyword id="2199591" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Srini-Sundararajan">Srini Sundararajan</keyword> as the head of network business for India. 
 
Sundararajan will manage the operations and would further develop business opportunities of Samsung's mobile network business in the whole of Southwest Asia. 
 
"We are very glad to announce Srini's appointment and wish him success in his new role. Srini is well experienced and we are expecting his contribution to strengthen Samsung's mobile network business," Youngky Kim, President &amp; Head of Network at Samsung Electronics told ET. 
 
"With Srini, Samsung will continue to expand its business in Southwest Asia, one of the fastest growing markets in the industry." 
 
Sundararajan is a veteran of the industry, known for his immense knowledge of the mobile network sector. He has almost 30 years of experience in various jobs related to the field, like R&amp;D and product management. 
 
Prior to this, Sundararajan has led the India and South Asia business of Alcatel-Lucent, and has done significant contribution towards business profitability, market development and organizational management.

New Delhi, Dec 2 () Samsung India Electronics' consolidated net profit fell over 58 per cent to Rs 1,540.5 crore in 2018-19, according to a regulatory filing.
 The firm had posted a net profit of Rs 3,712.8 crore in the financial year 2017-18.
 However, the company total income rose 20 per cent to Rs 73,085.9 crore in FY19 from Rs 61,065.6 crore in the previous fiscal, as per the documents filed by the company to the Registrar of Companies (RoC)
 Samsung India competes with the likes of Xiaomi, OnePlus and LG in India.
 With this, the mobile phone and consumer durables major has crossed the USD 10-billion income milestone in the Indian consumer electronics market.
 E-mails sent to Samsung India did not elicit a reponse.
 Samsung India's revenue from operations in 2018-19 stood at Rs 70,627.7 crore, a rise of 19 per cent as compared with Rs 59,370.9 crore in the previous fiscal.
 Over 60 per cent of the revenue from operations for the South Korean conglomerate came from mobile phones (Rs 43,087.98 crore), while the audio visual segment (television and cameras) and the home appliances category (washing machines, refrigerators and air conditioner) accounted for Rs 5,015.7 crore and Rs 7,408.2 crore, respectively.
 Samsung has been witnessing strong competition in the mobile phone space from players such as Xiaomi (mass segment) and OnePlus (premium segment). Earlier this year, Samsung had launched its online-only M series and had said it was confident of clocking double-digit growth in the hyper-competitive Indian smartphone market.
 According to research firm IDC, Xiaomi led the smartphone shipment tally with 27.1 per cent share, followed by Samsung (18.9 per cent), Vivo (15.2 per cent), Realme (14.3 per cent) and Oppo (11.8 per cent) in the July-September quarter that saw a record shipment of 46.6 million units.
 During the financial year 2018-19, Samsung India saw its total expenses go up by over 27 per cent to Rs 70,227.8 crore as against Rs 55,283.8 crore.
 Its employee benefit expenses grew to Rs 2,537.6 crore in 2018-19 from Rs 2,342 crore in the previous financial year, while finance cost were higher at Rs 1,059.3 crore in 2018-19 as against Rs 711 crore in the year-ago period. KRH SR HRS

Samsung India's profit declines 58 pc, becomes USD 10 bn firm

Expanding its "Galaxy On Series" portfolio, <keyword id="107877" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung-India">Samsung India</keyword> on Friday launched a mid-segment smartphone "Galaxy On Nxt" for Rs 18,490 in India. 
 
The 5.5-inch, full-HD "Galaxy On Nxt" has 2.5D Gorilla Glass, powerful octa-core processor, 3GB RAM and 3,300 mAh battery. 
 The device comes with 32GB internal memory, <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> (Marshmallow) OS, dual SIM and Micro SD card support which is expandable up to 256GB. 
 
To ensure data security, the device has a fingerprint sensor that allows quick and secure access. "Galaxy On Nxt" integrates features such as "S Power Planning" and "S Secure" to address consumers' power management and security-related concerns.

These Chinese brands emerged as favourites amongst the trade because of a bigger margin payout as compared to other mainstream brands. They also shell out more money for display space and branding, which is why they have been able to make their way into the smallest of neighbourhood stores in India. 
 
The share of Chinese smartphone brands rose to 27% of the total smartphone market in Q1 of FY 2016-17, as compared to 21% in the last quarter, said Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Technology Market Research.

As compared to that, Samsung's share fell to 25.6% during Q1, as compared to 29% in the preceding quarter. Similarly, Micromax's share slipped to 14.1% from 17%, and Intex lost 1.5% share from the last reported 10%.

Even though Samsung shipped more units when it comes to absolute numbers, the share narrowed because of a slower growth rate as compared to the Chinese brands, as told to ET by Tarun Pathak, senior telecom analyst at Counterpoint Research. 
 
Samsung, however, said that it had consolidated its smartphone market share to 47.7% in the first six months of 2016 as compared to 38.4% from same period last year.

The layoffs come at a time when the company is grappling with lesser sales due to lower consumer demand, a report in ET reveals. <h2>Samsung plans to lay off people in India </h2> Industry insiders told ET that the layoffs will affect various departments including mobile phones, home appliances, and consumer electronics. The cuts are part of Samsung’s broader effort to lower costs and maintain profitability during this challenging period. The layoffs represent around 9-10 percent of Samsung’s managerial staff in India, where the company employs about 2,000 executives. Those affected will receive three months’ salary along with a severance package offering one month’s salary for every year of service. <h2>Samsung's restructuring plans </h2> As part of its cost-cutting measures, Samsung is also considering merging some of its business divisions, such as television and home appliances. This restructuring, which aims to streamline operations and reduce inefficiencies, could lead to further layoffs. While no official decision has been made yet, reports suggest that the final plan will be confirmed after Diwali, a key festival season in India. The report also mentioned that Samsung has already frozen new hires, and positions left vacant by executives who have resigned are not being filled. Samsung Electronics plans to lay off over 200 Indian employees to reduce costs, details inside

New Delhi, Jan 3 () Dixon Technologies (India) Ltd on Friday said it has inked a pact with Samsung India Electronics for manufacturing LED TVs for the latter.
 The company, however, didn't disclose details about production and other aspects of the partnership.
 "Dixon shall be manufacturing LED TV for Samsung from its manufacturing facility located at Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh," the company said in a BSE filing.
 Dixon Technologies (India) Ltd is engaged in manufacturing products in the consumer durables segment, lighting and mobile phones markets in India. Its diversified product portfolio includes CCTV and DVRs as well.
 "Considering the faith they have bestowed on Dixon by collaborating in washing machines, mobile phones and now LED TVs, we are hopeful that our partnership grows sturdier with time," Dixon Technologies (India) Ltd Executive Chairman Sunil Vachani said.
 The company also provides services such as repair and refurbishment of set top boxes, mobile phones and LED TV panels.
 Samsung had shifted its entire TV manufacturing to Vietnam from Chennai last year. According to sources, the environment is now conducive for manufacturing LED TVs in India after the government's move to roll back custom duty imposed on display panels to zero.
 Presently, Samsung imports its portfolio of TVs from Vietnam to India under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Dixon Technologies to manufacture LED TVs for Samsung

New Delhi, Mar 31 () To help authorities and people increase preparedness against Covid-19, electronic majors Samsung and LG have pledged to offer products and protective equipment like surgeon gown, face masks, glove, refrigerators, water purifiers, among others, to hospitals. LG Electronics India on Tuesday said it has also partnered with Akshaya Patra Foundation to sponsor one million meals to migrant labourers and daily wage workers, who are struggling amid the 21-day lockdown in the country. "With the rise in confirmed cases of COVID-19, LG has taken a pledge to support India's fight against the pandemic. LG is committed to offer active support to people in need in this current situation," it said in a statement. LG Electronics India will donate products like water purifiers, air conditioners, refrigerators and TVs to the hospitals for their quarantine/isolation wards, covering 50 state and district hospitals across the country. Samsung India, on the other hand, will provide preventive kits to hospitals, which includes a surgeon gown, face mask, gloves, preventive eye wear, hood cap and shoe cover. It will also provide infra-red thermometers and public addressal systems that can be used by the authorities at hospitals and other facilities, along with air purifiers in medical facilities. The India unit of Samsung said it will also support local police by providing cooked food packets to local communities around its manufacturing facility. "Samsung is committed to work together with the people of India in this hour of difficulty. Over the last few days, our teams have engaged round-the-clock with various governments, local authorities, and healthcare professionals to prepare a broad and meaningful strategy to win this battle together," Samsung India in a statement. COVID-19 infection, which originated in Wuhan in China, has spread across the world and claimed around 34,000 lives. Countries like South Korea, Spain, Italy, Iran and the US have been badly hit. In India, the total number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 1,251, while the death toll touched 32. To combat the spread, the government had announced a 21-day lockdown that ends on April 14. Corporate India has been rushing in to help the government and citizens fight the covid-19 pandemic in India. Tata Trusts &amp; Tata group together have pledged Rs 1,500 crore - by far the highest by any corporate. Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani has also committed a further Rs 500 crore to the Prime Minister's COVID-19 fund, topping up over the multi-crore initiative of India's first coronavirus hospital, meals to the needy, and fuel to emergency vehicles. Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Infosys, has committed Rs 100 crore, while a number of other companies are also extending support efforts towards fighting COVID-19 in India. "In these precarious and uncertain times, LG India believes in helping and supporting the Government &amp; citizen of India with a meaningful contribution. Our initiative is designed to help those in need and contribute to society, at this critical juncture in a positive way. Covid-19: Samsung, LG to provide preventive kits, other electronic products to hospitals in India

New Delhi, Dec 12 () South Korean consumer electronics major Samsung is embarking on an aggressive expansion in the air conditioner market in India with an eye to become number one player in the segment over the next three years, according to a senior company official.
 The company, which has been selling only select inverter air-conditioners (AC) in India, is widening its product offerings with plans to enter window AC and re-enter non-inverter split AC segment as part of the programme.
 Currently, a distant follower behind the likes of Voltas, LG, Hitachi, Blue Star and Haier, Samsung India has created a separate vertical for AC -- heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) -- by clubbing together residential AC (RAC) and system AC (B2B) in order to achieve its 2022 target.
 "Our objective is to become number one in the RAC segment. By 2022, we will achieve that by doubling our sales every year. Every year, we are targeting 100 per cent growth in 2020 and 2021 to reach our objective of number one by 2022," said Samsung India Senior Vice-President, HVAC division, Consumer Electronics Business, Rajeev Bhutani.
 He, however, did not share the company's current volume but as per an industry estimate, Samsung's annual AC sales in India stand at around 3 lakh units.
 In order to achieve the target, he said, "We will be launching new product categories in the inverter segment. We will re-enter into the on-off segment, which is a non-inverter in the split AC category. Also, we will enter window ACs. That will complete our product portfolio from a consumer perspective."
 Bhutani said after the creation of the AC-focussed "organisation" in the second half of this year between August and September, "we have started to work towards increasing our product addressability to 100 per cent".
 He further said the company will also "increase our addressability in the mass inverter segment with different specs" to add to Samsung's existing premium inverter ACs.
 Besides, Samsung India is also working to expand the reach of its ACs across the country by leveraging on the channel for its consumer electronics business and creating new exclusive outlets for the HVAC division.
 "We will also create a new channel, which will be HVAC exclusive channel in the market. The target for 2020 is to open up 300 new outlets to provide right experience and offer right cooling solutions to consumers," Bhutani said.
 The company's consumer electronics goods are currently available across 30,000-35,000 retail outlets, he added.
 "Currently, we (HVAC) are operating with 9,000 retailers and with our retail strength, we will be reaching to 14,000 retail outlets as we start in the first quarter of 2020. We will be having complete product line-up to meet consumer and trade requirements across India," Bhutani said.
 Moreover, the company will increase field force for installation, after sales service and branded service engineers by "almost 50 per cent and majority of these will be in tier-I and II on account of higher growth expected from these cities", he added.
 Bullish on the Indian AC market, Bhutani said the RAC segment is currently a USD 2.6 billion revenue business for the industry and is currently growing by 15 per cent.
 "India provides huge opportunity for the room AC business on account of huge lower penetration, which is currently at 5 per cent. In the past four-five years, sales of AC have been growing on account of urbanisation, electrification of more homes, change in living standards and rising temperatures," he said. RKL HRS

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has approved the applications of <keyword id="10591" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="6354671" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword> Hon Hai, <keyword id="274256" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pegatron">Pegatron</keyword>, Rising Star and <keyword id="1930805" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wistron">Wistron</keyword> from among the international applicants for manufacturing of <keyword id="38260" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-phones">mobile phones</keyword> in India under the government's Production-Linked Incentive scheme. Out of these, Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron are contract manufacturers for <keyword id="626905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-iPhones">Apple iPhones</keyword>. Apple (37 per cent) and Samsung (22 per cent) together account for nearly 60 per cent of global sales revenue of mobile phones and this scheme is expected to increase their manufacturing base manifold in the country, an official statement said. "The international mobile phone manufacturing companies that are approved under mobile phone (invoice value Rs 15,000 and above) segment are Samsung, Foxconn Hon Hai, Rising Star, Wistron and Pegatron," it said. The domestic companies approved for mobile phone manufacturing under the scheme are Lava, Bhagwati (<keyword id="71696" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>), Padget Electronics, UTL Neolyncs and Optiemus Electronics. These companies are expected to expand their manufacturing operations in a significant manner. Further, six companies approved under the Specified Electronic Components Segment are AAT&amp;S, Ascent Circuits, Visicon, Walsin, Sahasra and Neolync. The PLI scheme for large scale electronics manufacturing notified on April 1, 2020, extends an incentive of 4-6 per cent on incremental sales (over base year) of goods under target segments that are manufactured in India to eligible companies, for a period of five years subsequent to the base year (FY2019-20). In total, the ministry has approved the applications of 16 companies under the scheme. As per the ministry, the companies approved under the scheme will bring additional investment in electronics manufacturing to the tune of Rs 11,000 crore. The companies will also generate more than 2 lakh direct employment opportunities in the next five years along with creation of additional indirect employment of nearly 3 times the direct employment, the statement said. "The PLI scheme has been a huge success in terms of the applications received from global as well as domestic mobile phone manufacturing companies and electronic components manufacturers," a tweet by the ministry quoted Union Minister for Electronics and IT, <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword>, as saying. The industry also has hailed the approvals. ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said: "The approval for global companies is on expected lines. The approval for Indian companies is very fair and each company has got one approval." He noted that now the challenge would be whether these Indian companies build core design and brand capabilities and also scale up to become globally competitive, or some of them use it tactically and fade out with the PLI incentive. <keyword id="107877" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung-India">Samsung India</keyword> is making up for the damage caused by its Galaxy Note7 and is pitching S7 and S7 Edge to the customers during the festive season. 
 
Samsung is confident of registering expected sales during the festive season and hopes of gaining market share and even posting record sales. 
 
Manu Sharma, vice president (mobile business), Samsung India Electronics, told ET, “We have converted the Note 7 prebooked customers in India to S7 and S7 Edge. We are humbled by the loyalty of the consumers towards the brand. There is now a strong sales momentum on S7 and S7 Edge. By virtue of being a full range player with 25 models across segments, we are confident to grow our share and sales this quarter.” 
As per various reports, the sales of Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge shot up from 20% to 40% over the last 10 days. 
 
Meanwhile, Samsung will launch 4G handsets only and will leave the 3G smartphone space. 
 
"We already have the largest 4G handset portfolio. Around 80% of the smartphone market is now 4G handsets and hence we will only launch such handsets,” Manu told ET.

Samsung is banking on S7, S7 Edge to drive sales in India during festive season

Samsung will launch a new foldable phone called <keyword id="10097512" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="galaxy-z-fold-3">Galaxy Z Fold 3</keyword> with the S Pen support in June next year and the South Korean giant may discontinue the <keyword id="10316639" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="galaxy-note-lineup">Galaxy Note lineup</keyword>, the media reported on Monday. According to a report in the South Korean publication Aju News, Samsung Electronics has confirmed that the <keyword id="9843902" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="galaxy-z-fold">Galaxy Z Fold</keyword> 3 foldable phone will arrive in June 2021. The report claimed that Samsung will discontinue the Galaxy Note series next year. "The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is developed as a premium smartphone that combines the latest technologies from Samsung Electronics, such as S Pen (electronic pen) and UDC (Under Display Camera)". UDC is a technology that allows to take pictures without a camera hole by placing a camera under the OLED screen. Samsung "confirmed that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be equipped with the S Pen, a feature of the existing Galaxy Note series," the report mentioned. As the S Pen stylus is applied to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and <keyword id="9984689" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="galaxy-s21-ultra">Galaxy S21 Ultra</keyword> (tentative name), "the Note series will be discontinued". Samsung Display and its subsidiary Dowoo Insys have developed and delivered the second-generation UTG that applied its own cover glass technology, making it possible to realise the plan to mount the S Pen on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. "Samsung Electronics plans to apply UDC to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to provide a true full screen experience like a tablet PC". The previous Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 2 were equipped with a notch display with a single side of the screen and a punch hole display with a small hole to mount a front camera. Earlier reports also claimed that Samsung is planning to launch its next flagship called Galaxy S21 Ultra with an S Pen support but the S Pen will not be included with the phone. There may be three S21 models -- a standard, a Plus and an Ultra. The S21 will have a 6.2-inch display, the Plus will be 6.7 inches and the Ultra will reportedly have a 6.8-inch display, reported Android Police. Samsung may launch the Galaxy S21 series in January 2021, with first sales starting in early February.
