In mid-March, a scammer in California tried to buy $150 worth of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trying-wingstop-first-time-review-photos-2022-9">Wingstop</a> using my debit card. Aside from being impressed at the sheer size of the order, I was relieved because Citibank, which issued my card, declined the transaction on the spot and alerted me to the fraud. In minutes I was able to shut off my card, heading off any more purchases by the scammers, and order a new card. All's well that ends well.When I went to Buenos Aires in April, I figured I might <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/why-was-my-credit-card-declined">run into a similar situation</a>. Sure, the banks say you don't have to call ahead when you travel anymore, but I assumed I'd still have some purchase flagged as potential fraud, as had happened in past trips abroad. Miraculously, everything went off without a hitch. I don't know how JPMorgan Chase knew that I would spend $200 on Botox in Argentina, but it did. (No, I didn't book my flight on the same card, and whatever, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/botox-injections-fillers-plastic-surgery-gen-z-social-media-filters-2024-5">everybody gets Botox now</a>.)It's great that banks and credit-card companies are getting better at discerning which payments are fraudulent and which are legit. Many people have some horror story about having their credit card stolen or having their own legitimate transactions flagged as suspicious. And it's nice not to have to spend 20 minutes on the phone before a vacation explaining where you're going and when. Credit-card fraud protection is still far from perfect, but there's no denying that the technology is improving. On the flip side, it's also kind of wild to consider just how much financial institutions must know about you to make the right calls.I was curious about how it all works — and, frankly, a little creeped out. So I reached out to some credit-card companies and academics to learn more. Why don't people have to alert their credit-card companies about travel anymore? And, more broadly, just how have banks gotten so good at figuring out what's normal about our spending habits and what isn't?The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of card-fraud complaints each year. The Nilson Report, which tracks the card industry, says payment-card fraud resulted in $33 billion in losses worldwide in 2022 and $13.6 billion in losses in the US. As such, credit-card issuers and banks are keen to do what they can to spot fraud. They want to keep their customers happy, and, more importantly, they want to stem their losses. In the US, the major credit-card issuers and banks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/credit-card-lost-stolen-what-to-do">generally have a zero-liability policy</a>, which means that when a customer gets scammed, the organization, not the customer, has to eat the cost.Years ago, whether a transaction went through was based on things like whether a physical card was present, whether you had enough money to make the purchase, and (if the cashier wanted to look) whether your signature on the receipt matched the one on the back of your card. In some cases, the cashier may have even asked for ID or called the bank to verify the funds. We've come a long way from those bad old days by using the same tools that power most innovations: data and computers. Credit-card companies and banks know a lot about us — where we shop, when we spend, and how much we're usually willing to pay for things — and they're getting better and better at turning that knowledge into action. While it's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/generative-ai-exaggeration-openai-nvidia-microsoft-chatgpt-jobs-investors-markets-2024-3">all the rage to talk about newfangled forms of artificial intelligence</a>, fraud detection owes a lot to machine learning, a field within AI that's been around for years. A bunch of data gets dumped into computer systems, and algorithms figure out patterns and relationships. The algorithms create decision trees to predict the likelihood of different outcomes and identify what may be considered normal or fishy. It's not that your credit-card company knows that you, specifically, would blow a bunch of cash on A and not on B — it knows that customers with your profile are in the "likes A" camp and not the "likes B" one."It's looking at what's happening that is very much out of the ordinary for your general behaviors," said Tina Eide, an executive vice president of global fraud risk at American Express. "And when I talk about general behaviors, it is generalized, right? It is not down to the specific purchase or to the specific merchant." Eide added, "The models are evaluating a trillion dollars' worth of transactions a year."The machines know more now than ever. Mike Lemberger, Visa's regional risk officer for North America, said that over the past five years the number of data points people generate with their credit cards has grown tremendously. People are increasingly using cards over cash. And they don't just have a physical card they're pulling out at the store — they've got their card credentials in their Amazon account, Netflix account, iPhone, etc. The more purchases the card issuer can analyze, the more accurate the fraud detection will be."Visa, we don't have consumer information — that's your financial institution that has that — but what we have is this triangulation of all these data points," Lemberger said. "We can create more and better scores, layer on top of that machine learning and AI abilities, and it becomes a much, much more powerful predictor, which we then feed into all of our partners to say, 'Hey guys, if you want to make the best decisions, here's a whole bunch of really good information.'"Visa isn't going to block your card directly, but it'll alert your bank that your purchase looks suspicious or that fraud has been detected at the merchant you're dealing with.This all seemed pretty simple until I talked to Yann-Aël Le Borgne and Gianluca Bontempi, a pair of researchers at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium who <a target="_blank" href="https://fraud-detection-handbook.github.io/fraud-detection-handbook/Foreword.html#authors">work on machine learning and card fraud</a>. They emphasized the vast scale of this fraud-detection technology. Companies and their algorithms are ingesting millions of transactions and creating so many decision trees to categorize certain activities that it can defy human logic, they said. Basically, the computer may be right that your transaction looks funky even if it's made in your home city at a fairly innocuous vendor, or it may be right that the transaction is fine even though it's made in a faraway place — but when humans try to figure out what did or didn't sound the alarm, nobody will really be able to pinpoint why."Machines can consider many more features, and at the end of the day it's not clear if all those features have meaning for humans," Bontempi said. "Humans are used to working with two, three features, at most five features, while machines can work with hundreds of features. So there are really different levels between what a machine can do."There are human-written rules, which are generally interpretable, and there are machine-written rules, which can be a black box. They're more accurate, but they may be harder, if not impossible, for people to reverse engineer. And banks may be using several different algorithms, making this even more complicated. Data scientists are the ultimate decision-makers, but the information they're dealing with is based on highly complex tech. When I explained to experts my somewhat embarrassing wings-versus-wrinkles conundrum and asked what may have triggered one alert and not the other, they offered up different explanations. Eide, from American Express, said that even though I hadn't booked my trip to Argentina with the credit card I used to buy the Botox, something else had probably tipped off the system that I was there. I realized I'd also bought a package of spin classes in Buenos Aires on my phone with the same card. I had also paid for a meal in the city. Lemberger, from Visa, emphasized that it's about all the data and spending patterns and said that given my spending patterns, the Botox likely matched my profile more than the massive delivery order."I hate to say this to you, but at the end of the day, all these data points build personas. Just like in marketing somebody would use personas to market to you, we're using that same technology to protect you," he said. "And the fact is that we use those data points to not just secure you but the whole ecosystem."At some point it occurred to me that the supercomputers that credit-card companies and banks are working with could know more about me than I even know or understand about myself."It's probable that the exact reason why a transaction caused your card to be blocked has no straightforward interpretation," Le Borgne said.I also asked whether there was a big difference in credit-card protections and debit protections and was told not really — maybe banks will be a little more restrictive about credit because they're technically lending you money that's not limited by your actual cash balance. I also asked if companies don't worry about preclearing travel because they don't care as much about losing money to fraud anymore, to which the answer was a hard no."At the end of the day, somebody's got to pay for the fraudulent activity," Lemberger said. Credit-card companies will give you your money back if you're a victim of fraud, but they'll find another place to recoup that money, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/credit-card-late-fees-cap-swipe-mastercard-visa-jpmorgan-rewards-2024-4">just as they always do</a>.Instinctually, I am not a technology-is-awesome person — if the AI really is going to kill us, I feel like we should unplug it. I'm not super freaked out about the privacy stuff, but I also don't love the idea that AmEx and JPMorgan and Citi have me so pegged. But it's cool that companies really are making fraud detection better, especially in a world where fraudsters themselves are constantly getting better. I don't want to be like "Yay, banks!" but maybe here the answer really is a little "Yay, banks!" The display is protected by Gorilla Glass DX, offering you a good amount of protection. Like other panels from the company, the Galaxy Book4 Pro’s display offers excellent colour reproduction, good contrast and good visibility. Overall, the display is good for all users, from those enjoying content on the device to those creating content. <h2>Performance</h2>The laptop from Samsung is equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, which offers six performance cores, eight efficiency cores, and two low-power efficiency cores. The Intel Core Ultra is a new Meteor Lake chipset from the company and comes with Intel Arc graphics. The laptop is equipped with up to 32GB LPPDR5X RAM and 1TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. The new chipset from Intel is equipped with a dedicated neural processor unit that is aimed at easily performing AI tasks, which have become quite important these days. The low-power performance cores are aimed at improving the battery life. Samsung has added a lot of features that allow you to link it with your smartphone. You get features such as the ability to use it as a second display with the screen mirroring feature or the drag-and-drop feature. While this is good to have, do note that it only works if you have a Samsung smartphone or a Samsung tablet. As the device is packed with powerful hardware, I had no issues with performance. The laptop easily handles everything that you throw at it without any issues and multi-tasking is a breeze. As the laptop is not equipped with a dedicated graphics card, gaming is not one of its strengths. However, the Intel Arc graphics were able to handle a lot of games that are less graphic intensive with ease, allowing you to play games on the device. Coming to battery life, the Galaxy Book4 Pro is equipped with a 63Wh battery and supports 65W charging. As it is a lightweight laptop, the company has kept the battery size on the lower side. The power-efficient chipset ensures that you can get around 8 hours of battery life in regular usage, which should be enough for most users. <h2>Verdict</h2>The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro ticks a lot of the boxes, including a sleek and lightweight design, powerful hardware, excellent display and good battery life. It is a good option for those looking for a powerful laptop that is easy to carry around and are willing to pay a premium to get this combination. Talking about the uniformity in approach, we have a triple camera set-up on the back which resembles the flagship S24 line-up — nothing to complain about. Yes, I appreciate experiments, but why disturb something that works, and works well? I used the light green colour variant, and it has a blue shade to it as well. It is minimalistic and definitely looks good. We don’t have a cover inside the box, so if you are planning to buy one I suggest going for a clear case. This way you can appreciate the color. We do have one more colour option, the denim black, which is even more subtle. Over the years Samsung has managed to manage the weight better on the M series devices and M55 is no exception. The smartphone packs in a 5500 mAh battery and yet it feels light in the hand. For that matter, it feels lighter than the latest Nord CE 4 packing the same battery size. The device sports mostly a glass sandwich design with flat edges, something we are observing across smartphones now. And as you would expect combined with the optimal weight distribution and the design the smartphone has a towering presence. The volume rockers and power buttons are on the right edge and are placed conveniently for easy reach. They are also tactile and feel solid. At the bottom, we have the USB Type-C port along with the speaker grill and the SIM card slot. M55 supports 2 nano SIMs. While the overall design feels solid, I would like to note a couple of improvement opportunities: <ol><li>IP rating — In my usage so far, the device has faced short bouts with water splashes and has come out strong. However, an official rating definitely adds to the mindset. </li><li>IR blaster — Though not an in-demand feature, imagine having a universal remote in your pocket, with a Samsung UI. This dominance trickles down to the entire smartphone line-up and the M55 is the latest example of just how good it can get. The Galaxy M55 features a punch-hole 6.7-inch S-AMOLED+ display with a max refresh rate of 120Hz. And as you would expect from a Samsung display, it delivers on aesthetics and experience. The colors are well saturated, skin tones look perfect and the blacks are Z blacks. I caught up with Star Wars Rebels this weekend, it's an animated TV show set out in space. It provides a wide canvas for me to judge the display in terms of motion, image projection and sound. The M55 has passed the visual experience test without even flinching. The performance was consistent in terms of quality. However, I would recommend keeping the auto brightness off on this one. Yes, it manages to get the brightness level correct eventually, but it takes its sweet time. This gets particularly annoying when you are outdoors. To avoid this, I kept the brightness at 100% at all times, of course, this also helped in judging the battery life. The screen is also super responsive, and if I may say, better than what I have experienced in this segment. The smartphone provides a max refresh rate of 120Hz, wherein you have the option for an adaptive refresh rate as well. The screen instantly switches the refresh rate when you go through different apps. I was getting a consistent output of 90-120Hz while I was scrolling on a web page, and it would switch instantly when I would start a game. You do get an in-display fingerprint sensor here, but it’s not Samsung’s ultrasonic unit. So yes there is a noticeable pause before it unlocks the device. In order to skip this beat, I suggest setting up a facial unlock. Closing this section with the stereo speaker set-up on the Galaxy M55. It is loud, for the size in which it fits, but for a better experience, you should connect a pair of headphones. Software Samsung Galaxy M55 runs on Android 14 out of the box with Samsung One UI 6.1. Now this device is yet to get the new Samsung Galaxy AI features, about which you can learn<a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2O-9SerMSA/?hl=en"> here</a>. That being said, Samsung’s One UI still has some strong designs and features on offer. I don’t want to touch upon the aesthetics of it since it looks very familiar to what we have been observing. We get similar animation styles, widget options and themes. Customization options are a strong suite on One UI, and it shows up here as well. There is not one element which you cannot change here. From the font and text colour to custom themes everything can be rejigged. While this is good, I hope I can write something different about the UI next year. I thoroughly enjoyed using Android-specific features here, like text selection from an image. From the native camera app, I could select the text and take it out from the image. What I am not a fan of is the Samsung keyboard. The layout for emojis and other gifs is something which did not appeal to me. So, I opted for the Gboard. It is more familiar and I could maintain faster typing speeds on it. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy M55 performance is bug-free and easy to understand. However, I look forward to Galaxy AI features. This is a favourable expectation since Samsung has promised 4 years of OS updates here and 5 years of security updates. Performance Samsung Galaxy M55 runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC. This is a tried and tested CPU which has a strong track record of delivering stable performance. And that’s exactly what we experienced in the M55. I have tested the smartphone across computational heavy tasks like gaming and generic tasks like social media. And as I had expected the performance was stable. Nothing out of the park or to shout about, just about right. I have been running on multiple windows together and kept heavy apps like BGMI in the background. Yet, the device was able to boot up on time and switch between apps efficiently. The 12GB RAM variant that I have been testing can manage pretty much all the tasks that you throw at it. I also have 256GB of internal storage here which is ample for most users. Hence, I would recommend going for this variant. You get a solid RAM option combined with ample storage. Coming to gaming, the device was stable and I didn’t notice any lag or heating issues. I would play BGMI daily for about an hour. In a moderate setting delivering a smooth experience. However, for me, the litmus test of a smartphone in performance is the battery life. The M55’s 5500 mAh battery consistently gave me an average screen time of 7 hours. This is a huge number especially counting most of it was on mobile data. So if you are looking to buy a device solely on battery performance in this segment, you have a clear pick here. Camera Samsung Galaxy M55 offers a triple camera set-up, you get a brand new 50MP OIS primary camera here. This is paired with an 8MP ultra-wide sensor and a 2MP macro sensor. At a time when we are observing camera options being trimmed down across devices, Samsung’s decision to have all three here is refreshing. However, as you might have observed the trend here, the camera performance is satisfactory. Except for the primary camera performance, the rest of the set-up delivers familiar results. There are no hard-core experiments done here, which I believe the M series users don’t really look for. Starting with the strongest suit, the 50MP primary camera. I have tested multiple cameras this year, but this one in particular stands out for me, especially in natural lighting. The colour tones are perfect and the balance that it can maintain is commendable. The camera by default shoots 12.5MP images, but once you bump up the settings to 50MP you see a noticeable change. I also liked the performance in low light since the camera is able to manage light surprisingly well. The details are off as you would expect, but the image results are far better than what the viewfinder shows you. Especially in terms of details, specifically while editing them. We, at Business Insider India, make a lot of thumbnails which require editing, and high-quality images are a necessity, the M55 delivers just that. The 8MP ultra-wide sensor here opens up the frame but you will notice a color shift. Nothing major but a slight saturation is what I observed. However, for quick point and shoot the camera gives a satisfactory performance. The 2MP macro sensor here is definitely for a niche set of users. You can expect decent details from the camera with colour accuracy and fast shutter speed. We don’t have a dedicated portrait sensor here, which I would prefer over a macro sensor. Better yet, the portrait results are solid with the software providing suitable edge detection. You can also play around with the bokeh effect in the gallery. Coming to video, the camera can record 4K videos upto 30fps and 1080P videos at 30 &amp; 60fps. I would recommend sticking to 1080P especially if you shoot in a vlogging format where the camera stays on for longer durations. The videos in all formats look crystal clear with well-captured details and colours. There is also no lag in the video feed and the audio from the primary microphone is also clean and you can use it directly for your videos. The selfie camera this time is new, with a 50MP sensor. And the selfies are also good — noise is in control, sharpness is intact, and details are well put together with the correct colors. The selfie camera also provides us with an option to open the frame for a wide-angle shot. It’s not a significant jump but enough to fit three people. Portrait shots from the front camera are also crisp, and the blur is managed well across multiple subjects. Videos from the front camera are solid, especially at 4K videos at 30fps and 1080P at 30fps. The wide-angle frame, paired with the correct colours, makes for a good combination. So, if you are a vlogger, you should take a note. Verdict Samsung Galaxy M55 is for the set of users who don’t want to experiment with their smartphones. The device delivers an improved performance on a standard Samsung experience. It sports a well-accepted design, decent performance, solid battery life and a camera that has the potential to surprise you. However, if you are looking for a specific use case like gaming or software, then I suggest checking out Poco X6 Pro, Nothing Phone 2A, or a Redmi Note 13 Pro.
