<ul><li><keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> is reportedly looking to move more of its smartphone making business to India. <br /></li><li>A report by Economic Times, citing sources, says the company is looking to produce devices worth $40 billion and export those in the $200-plus range. <br /></li><li>The South Korean behemoth is in the middle of shutting down its manufacturing back home due to increasing costs of labour. <br /></li></ul>In search of cheap labour, the South Korean smartphone manufacturer, Samsung, is reportedly looking to move some of its production line to India. The <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/mobile/samsung-likely-to-move-part-of-smartphone-production-to-india/77582922">Economic Times</a> reported, citing sources, that the global giant is in the midst of finalising plans to produce devices worth over ₹3 lakh crore ($40 billion) locally. <br /><br />The development comes as the smartphone-making behemoth is in the midst of packing up its manufacturing process back home due to increasing labour costs. As of right now, Samsung manufacturers nearly half of its phones in Vietnam. It also has manufacturing bases in Brazil and Indonesia.<br /><br />According to the report, the company is looking to diversify its production lines for making smartphones in India under the Production Linked Incentive Schemes (PLI). The company did not respond to Business Insider India’s request for comment.<br /><br /><strong>Samsung gets in line beside Apple to set up base in India<br /></strong>Samsung is among other smartphone manufacturers like Apple’s Foxconn and Wistron, who has filed an application with the government under the PLI scheme, according to IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. <br /><br />There has been a rush of contractors looking to shift bases as products from China come under more scrutiny across the world. India, alone, is the second-largest smartphone market in the world — one that manufacturers cannot afford to lose as India pushes the <em>Atma Nirbhar </em>agenda.<br /><br /><strong>Looking for the export advantage<br /></strong>Samsung already has its largest mobile phone manufacturing unit in the world set up in Noida, from where it also exports to other countries. If Samsung were to expand its manufacturing base in India, most of the smartphones in the plus $200 segment will be exported — adding to India’s outgoing trade — according to the report. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has an unusual take on the risk of robots taking over US jobs.</li><li>The conventional wisdom is that business owners who replace human workers with robots will accumulate wealth - something a left-leaning politician would usually be opposed to.</li><li>Speaking at SXSW, Ocasio-Cortez said people should be "excited" for automation because it would leave people free to be more creative.</li><li>She also thinks robots, or more precisely robot owners, should be taxed for replacing jobs.</li></ul><p>Speaking at SXSW over the weekend, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez voiced her view that people shouldn't be worried that automation might be about to wipe out their jobs.</p><p>It's an unusual take, because the perceived wisdom is that rising automation will adversely impact both blue- and white-collar jobs, laying waste to factory workers, lawyers, and anyone else who does repetitive work that could easily be automated.</p><p>The thinking goes that these people will either need swift retraining or will need to survive on government handouts. Meanwhile, the moguls who actually own the robots <a href="https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/11/ai_automation_risks_amplifying_wealth_gap/">will accumulate wealth by laying off expensive human workers</a> in favour of cheap robot workers. Indeed, one would-be Democratic presidential candidate, businessman Andrew Yang, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/10/technology/his-2020-campaign-message-the-robots-are-coming.html">has issued doomsday predictions</a> that AI will "destabilise society."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>But Ocasio-Cortez, leaning into her socialist credentials, wants to retool our entire way of thinking about work.</p><p>"We should not be haunted by the specter of being automated out of work. We should not feel nervous about the tollbooth collector not having to collect tolls. We should be excited by that. But the reason we're not excited about it is because we live in a society where if you don't have a job, you are left to die," she said.</p><p>"We should be excited about automation, because what it could potentially mean is more time educating ourselves, more time creating art, more time investing in and investigating the sciences, more time focused on invention, more time going to space, more time enjoying the world that we live in. Because not all creativity needs to be bonded by wage."</p><p>Wealthy robot owners, she added, could be taxed by as much as 90%. Ocasio-Cortez cited comments by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, <a href="https://qz.com/911968/bill-gates-the-robot-that-takes-your-job-should-pay-taxes/">who suggested that robots should pay the taxes for the people they replace</a>, although he didn't name a precise figure. "What [Gates is] really talking about is taxing corporations at 90%, but it's easier to say: 'Tax a robot,'" Ocasio-Cortez said.</p><p>It would require a total reimagining of work and leisure time. But Ocasio-Cortez isn't the only person to argue that automated labour would free humans up to do whatever they like - normally something worthwhile or creative.</p><p>Toby Walsh, a professor of AI at the University of New South Wales, has argued it's impossible to know how many jobs might be adversely impacted by AI. He disputed <a href="https://www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/downloads/academic/The_Future_of_Employment.pdf">one 2013 study from Oxford stated that 47% of all US employment</a> was at risk.</p><p>He wrote in The Guardian: "The AI revolution then will be about rediscovering the things that make us human. Technically, machines will have become amazing artists. They will be able to write music to rival Bach, and paintings to match Picasso. But we'll still prefer works produced by human artists.</p><p>"These works will speak to the human experience. We will appreciate a human artist who speaks about love because we have this in common.
