I compared the Away Bigger Carry-On bag to my Samsonite luggage, and it convinced me to switch to the newer, trendier brand

Apart from small innovations and few design changes most of them look the same and provide the same kind of travel flexibility. 2 or 4 Wheels, array of colours and graphics, plastic and toughened cloth enclosure are some of the things that these suitcases bring with them. Nothing big to fancy.<br />
<br /> However, a company from <keyword id="6355882" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="israel">Israel</keyword> is trying to revolutionaries the industry with their neat new product. It’s called <keyword id="1007169" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fugu">FUGU</keyword> <keyword id="52112" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="luggage">Luggage</keyword>. It is new type of suitcase that looks like a carry-on bag, but can be expanded to a level that it becomes a check-in mammoth. The company also showcases it as the luggage not for the primitives, but for the modern man.<br />

Made out of ABS plastics the bag expands with the help of inflatable stitch walls that grow it to a size of 27-inches from 9-inches. The company claims that shelves can be put easily in the expanded bag, so that everything can be neatly placed and also one can hang shirts or coats.<br />
<br /> A very interesting concept if you ask as. The project is on <keyword id="842662" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kickstarter">Kickstarter</keyword> and has already raised almost 200,000 USD with 741 people are backing it up. FUGU Luggage will be available for $ 245 and people who have pledged or pre-ordered will get their orders in September, 2015. That The Luggage Industry Needs?

And yet, one of its fastest-growing companies is a brand you might not have heard of — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rimowa-aluminum-luggage-lvmh-quiet-status-symbol-wealthy-travelers-2024-9">Rimowa</a>.</p><p>It's a luggage maker best known for one product, a grooved aluminum suitcase with a rabid fan base. The least expensive carry-on model goes for $1,430, while the largest trunk rings in at $2,450.</p><p>Rimowa has been a key player in the suitcase industry since before it was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alexandre-arnault-profile-tiffany-rimowa-lvmh-2021-7">acquired by LVMH</a> in 2016. The 126-year-old German company is synonymous with two of the biggest hard-shelled luggage trends over the past century, following the debut of an aluminum version in the 1920s and a polycarbonate option eighty years later.</p><div type="image" title="rows of Rimowa suitcases on display" height="1725" width="2300" msid="113531622" hostid="261" sizebytes="146082"></div><p>Scores of competitors like Away, Samsonite, and Tumi have since unveiled similar styles — most for a fraction of Rimowa's price.</p><p>Despite these other options, Rimowa's fan base has remained loyal to the brand's smooth wheels, timeless look, lifetime warranty, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-adult-summer-camps-new-hot-vacation-2024-9">status symbol</a> title.</p><p>One buyer, Vanessa Garoute, 30, told Business Insider she considered herself a lifelong Rimowa client, having purchased six pieces since 2017.</p><p>Another, Tania Antonenkova, 32, estimated she and her husband have collected more than 17 of the high-end suitcases. (Martha Stewart, among other <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gq.com/gallery/rimowa-celebrity-suitcases-nyc-exhibition">high-profile owners</a>, also famously owns a collection of Rimowas and has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CWI9ERKJePg/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==">publicly professed</a> her love for the brand.)</p><div type="image" title="Rimowa luggage in store" height="1725" width="2300" msid="113531618" hostid="261" sizebytes="230368"></div><p>With such devoted customers, it's no wonder these industrial-chic bags-on-wheels have been a beacon of light amid a recent dip in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-goods-sales-slow-clothes-shoes-china-bain-company-travel-2024-6">luxury goods sales</a> due to a slowdown of demand in China.</p><p>While LVMH's overall operating profit dipped 8% in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year, its fashion and leather goods segment, which includes Rimowa, saw a 6% drop.</p><p>Despite this, the suitcase company (along with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quiet-luxury-explained-which-brands-will-benefit-2023-4">cashmere maker Loro Piana</a>) continued their "excellent momentum," LVMH <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lvmh.com/en/publications/good-results-for-lvmh-in-the-first-half-of-the-year-despite-the-prevailing-environment">said</a>.</p><p>A spokesperson for Rimowa told BI that the luggage maker is now one of its parent company's fastest-growing brands.</p><p>Rimowa has been expanding its presence from Europe and Asia into North America, with the US now serving as one of its top markets, CEO Hugues Bonnet-Masimbert said in an interview.</p><h2 id="fb30a8a5-746c-4c8a-8b67-0c07e873dd03"><strong>Fashion meets mobility</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Lewis Hamilton" height="2894" width="3859" msid="113531620" hostid="261" sizebytes="604322"></div><p>For <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-i-recommend-to-solo-single-cruise-travelers-2023-7">frequent travelers</a>, Rimowa's iconic suitcases have become as much a style statement as they are a necessity. Looking ahead, the company could continue to drill into this unique niche while expanding into more everyday accessories.</p><p>In early September, Rimowa unveiled its new Original Bag, a $2,125 aluminum cross-body purse with the company's signature ribbed exterior. It's "another step in the fashion space," Bonnet-Masimbert said, and a hint of how the company hopes to progress in the coming years.</p><p>For a company so synonymous with luggage, it was an "interesting challenge," the CEO said — one that took three years to develop.</p><div type="image" title="rows of Rimowa products" height="1725" width="2300" msid="113531619" hostid="261" sizebytes="123486"></div><p>The new purse isn't Rimowa's first move into the everyday accessories space. In the last five years, the company has debuted a growing portfolio of non-luggage products such as backpacks, duffle bags, and tote bags.</p><p>Luggage has remained its most popular product. However, according to Bonnet-Masimbert, these steps into the wearable market have been performing "extremely well."</p><p>"We feel we are very legitimate in that space, and that opens a lot of future product offerings," Bonnet-Masimbert said.</p><p>Expect more of it — "We have lots of things cooking," the company's CEO hinted.</p>

But it's one of the reasons he, 36, moved to Los Angeles — and why he's dropped about $5,800 to buy three Rimowa suitcases.</p><p>If you don't recognize the brand's name, you might know its iconic grooved aluminum luggage.</p><p>The cheapest model goes for $1,430, while the largest rings in at $2,450. There are also more niche variations, like a 12-wine bottle suitcase, which costs $9,900, and a new $2,125 cross-body bag.</p><p>Despite —or maybe because of — its price, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alexandre-arnault-profile-tiffany-rimowa-lvmh-2021-7">Rimowa's</a> shiny four-wheeled bags are now a common sight in the overhead bins of business-class cabins and airport lounges.</p><p>But when "Entourage" was still on the air, the show's characters and celebrities were the only people Baptist saw toting the industrial-chic bags. (These days, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.gq.com/gallery/rimowa-celebrity-suitcases-nyc-exhibition">icons like</a> Martha Stewart, Rodger Federer, and Billie Eilish are fans too.)</p><div type="image" title="John Baptist carrying two pieces of Rimowa luggage." height="1725" width="2300" msid="113465437" hostid="261" sizebytes="227378"></div><p>It's what lured him — a lifestyle content creator and real estate flipper — to the brand and why he eventually "splurged" to buy his first Rimowa, the $2,175 aluminum trunk, about 1 ½ years ago, he told BI.</p><p>He's since purchased a second trunk for his girlfriend and a $1,430 carry-on luggage for himself.</p><p>"This is a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-adult-summer-camps-new-hot-vacation-2024-9">status </a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-adult-summer-camps-new-hot-vacation-2024-9">symbol</a> for me," Baptist said. "It's the same thing as my Goyard wallet. I achieved purchasing it, and it's a necessity for me now."</p><h2 id="534279f8-c9d9-4e4f-9140-b1ad8dff14f2"><strong>LVMH acquired the now-126-year-old German company in 2016</strong></h2><div type="image" title="person walking in front of Rimowa store" height="1725" width="2300" msid="113465451" hostid="261" sizebytes="262786"></div><p>Rimowa may not be as talked about as LVMH's 74 other iconic brands like Fendi, Louis Vuitton, or Tiffany and Co., but it certainly holds its ground in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-bernard-arnault-owner-louis-vuitton-lvmh-net-worth">Bernard Arnault's world of luxury</a>.</p><p>LVMH's revenue dipped just over 1% in the first half of 2024 amid a slowdown in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-goods-sales-slow-clothes-shoes-china-bain-company-travel-2024-6">demand for luxury goods in China</a>. But Rimowa continued "excellent momentum," LVMH <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.lvmh.com/en/publications/good-results-for-lvmh-in-the-first-half-of-the-year-despite-the-prevailing-environment">said</a>.</p><p>A spokesperson told Business Insider that the luggage maker is now one of its parent company's fastest-growing brands. After all, Rimowa's iconic bags were absent from Good Housekeeping, Travel and Leisure, and Wirecutter's 2024 best luggage lists. </p><p>To understand why they've become a cult classic, its biggest fans say you have to try one of these bags for yourself. And it's fine if they break — Rimowa offers a lifetime warranty.</p><h2 id="ebb410e9-305c-483e-b244-e9798486bdd2"><strong>Rimowa's 3 Ws: Wheels, warranty, and wear</strong></h2><div type="image" title="composite of 3 photos of Rimowa suitcases" height="1490" width="2979" msid="113465452" hostid="261" sizebytes="435122"></div><p>Tania Antonenkova, a Miami-based luxury content creator and self-described "Birkin woman," said Rimowa is the sole reason she can't <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dior-italy-labor-investigation-contractors-lvmh-armani-luxury-bags-2024-7">boycott LVMH</a> as she'd like to.</p><p>Antonenkova, 32, has been a loyal Rimowa collector for five years. She estimates she and her husband have purchased more than 17 of its suitcases. "It's literally a closet full of Rimowa," she told BI, noting that she's spent about $6,000 on the company.</p><p>Antonenkova flies two to three times a month and goes on at least three long-haul flights a year, often for work (in tech sales). Still, no other luggage maker can compare to its quality, comfort, and convenience.</p><p>"When you travel a lot, you want it to be as pain-free and hassle-free as possible," Antonenkova said, noting that she's partial to Rimowa's interior compartments and wheels.</p><p>It's a sentiment other fans share.</p><div type="image" title="close-up of Rimowa luggage locks" height="1725" width="2300" msid="113465447" hostid="261" sizebytes="128124"></div><p>Carter Smith, 19, told BI that he considers the wheels on his months-old Rimowa aluminum carry-on "the best in the industry." The bag's durability, auto-close handle, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-gen-z-travel-debt-affirm-klarna-credit-cards-2024-8">status symbol</a> title have also been big positives.</p><p>Smith, a consumer tech content creator, travels two to three times a month. He doesn't consider himself a luxury traveler — he's more of a "try to get an exit row" than a first-class or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/success-rise-of-premium-economy-comfort-affordable-luxury-2024-7">comfort-plus</a> flyer, according to his TikTok <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@carterpcs/video/7343427339667148078">review</a> of the luggage.</p><p>The thought of buying a high-end suitcase had never crossed his mind. That is, until he spotted a Rimowa in the wild (Las Vegas) two years ago, a moment he remembers vividly.</p><div type="image" title="Rimowa luggage in store" height="1725" width="2300" msid="113465441" hostid="261" sizebytes="230368"></div><p>He thought the shiny luggage looked cooler than his previous one from Away. And while he called the cost of his new suitcase "a little insane" — $1,550 after tax and shipping — he decided to max out his credit card for the purchase.</p><p>However, his sentiment on travel splurges remains the same: "I'm walking to the back of the plane with my beat-up Crocs, my $2 Haines t-shirt, and my Rimowa," Smith told BI.</p><p>Fitting for a tech guy, he did note that his bag is not as technologically advanced as other luggage options. There are no integrated chargers, for example, and the lock on his suitcase is manual.</p><p>However, he has no complaints — it's "timeless."</p><h2 id="c913e996-fc5c-4291-a0d4-eca8eeb9f09d"><strong>Rimowa creates its products with a 'design to be repaired ethos'</strong></h2><div type="image" title="inside of Rimowa bag" height="1725" width="2300" msid="113465448" hostid="261" sizebytes="323754"></div><p>Rimowa's decision to offer a lifetime warranty on products purchased after July 2022 "put a new level of urgency on achieving repairability," Bonnet-Masimbert told BI. "If you offer a lifetime guarantee, any break is a cost to your company."</p><p>According to Rimowa's CEO, the company analyzes the repairs it performs every week and tweaks the design to prevent future incidents.</p><p>The warranty policy and quick repairs have greatly benefited travelers like Vanessa Garoute, a 30-year-old Los Angeles-based hairstylist. Drawn to the durability and sleekness of Rimowa, she has purchased six pieces — three for herself and three for her boyfriend — since 2017.</p><p>She now considers herself a lifelong Rimowa customer.</p><div type="image" title="composite of Vanessa Garoute with luggage and more luggage on hotel cart" height="1073" width="1431" msid="113465449" hostid="261" sizebytes="172174"></div><p>Garoute has considered competitors like Béis and Away. But once Rimowa implemented its lifetime warranty, "it was over," she said. "Rimowa won."</p><p>And for good reason — she's had two of her carry-on Rimowas repaired, once after her 10-year-old aluminum one cracked on a flight back from France and another after an airline broke a wheel off of her "essential lite" luggage.</p><p>The Rimowa store fixed the former in five minutes — despite her having purchased it before the lifetime warranty policy went into effect — and gave her a new suitcase for the latter.</p><p>"The amount of money people spend in replacing their luggage all the time, they might as well just invest in one that will repair itself," Garoute told BI. "Yes, it's expensive when you swipe your card, but after that, you'll never swipe it again."</p><div type="image" title="aluminum Rimowa suitcase with stickers" height="1725" width="2300" msid="113465443" hostid="261" sizebytes="344552"></div><p>Just don't bring your luggage in for repairs when it inevitably gets scuffed up.</p><p>Rimowa's CEO said he would rather see his products scratched up — or, as he said, "carrying the scars of all the travels" — than in pristine condition.</p><p>Think of it as "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.countryandtownhouse.com/style/fashion/jane-birkinifying-tiktok/">Jane Birkinifying</a>" your luggage. The more you've traveled and beat it up, the better — even if you end up "hyper-fixating on every little piece of damage" on your more than $1,500 purchase, as Smith said.</p><p>"People on social media are really mean about Rimowa," Garoute said. "But I don't know any Rimowa lovers who don't buy more than one. I will have them for the rest of my life."</p>

This $1,400 luggage is the hottest quiet status symbol for celebrities and wealthy travelers. The more beat up it looks, the better.

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Luxury goods conglomerate LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton has agreed to purchase an 80% stake in German suitcase maker Rimowa for €640 million, or about $717 million, according to a press&#xa0;<a href="https://www.lvmh.com/news-documents/press-releases/rimowa-global-leader-of-high-quality-luggage-joins-the-lvmh-group/">release</a>.</span></p><p><span>Rimowa, famous for its ribbed aluminum suitcases, is a <a href="http://www.whowhatwear.com/rimowa-luggage-suitcase-celebrity-airport-style/">favorite of celebrities</a> around the world, including Martha Stewart, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Will.i.am, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Upton. </span></p><p><span>Started in&#xa0;<span>Cologne, Germany</span>, it created the first aluminum case in 1937 and the first lightweight polycarbonate case in 2000, <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/business-37549157">according to the BBC</a>.</span></p><p><span><span>"Rimowa is a brand with a unique heritage," Bernard Arnault, CEO and chairman of LVMH, <a href="http://www.rimowa.com/en-us/lvmh">said in the release</a>.</span><span>&#xa0;"We share with [Rimowa CEO] Dieter Morszeck the same passion for innovation and a common desire to offer very high-quality products derived from a European tradition of craftsmanship."</span></span></p><p><span>The cheapest of Rimowa's offerings cost about $400, but larger cases can&#xa0;reach over $1,000, which is still significantly less than a comparably sized Louis Vuitton-branded case. The polycarbonate suitcases come in a range of colors from dark green to bright red, while the aluminum models come in different shades of silver and beige. <p>In the <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> business, everyone is familiar with a commercial for the French TV company Canal+, titled "The Bear." Created by ad agency BETC Paris, it stars a bearskin rug who, having seen a lot of movies on TV from his spot on the living room floor, becomes a movie director himself in the egotastic style of Stanley Kubrick.</p>
<p>This commercial is now, officially, the best TV ad of all time, according to The Gunn Report, which tracks advertising awards. <a href="http://www.adweek.com/news/advertising-branding/gunn-report-betcs-bear-most-awarded-spot-146904">Adweek notes that the ad has received more industry awards</a> than any other single piece of work in the Gunn Report's history.</p>
<p>Released in 2011, it has been viewed 1 million times on YouTube but, obviously, has never aired in any of the larger TV markets in the English-speaking West because it's for a French brand. (The ad itself is a mix of English and subtitles.) It is absolutely hilarious.</p>

<p>Also of note is this billboard for Samsonite, titled "Heaven &amp; Hell." Made by JWT Shanghai, it is the most awarded print ad ever, the Gunn Report says. It's very big, and very detailed. <p>Ever since the industry moved past the simple promotion of product features in favor of a more artistic approach in the 1960s, Madison Avenue executives have grappled with the best ways to not only capture a consumer's attention, but his or her imagination, as well.</p>
<p>But while we all know creativity when we see it, the actual process of producing something fresh and exciting is significantly more difficult to figure out. For help, we consulted the wise words of marketing legends past and present, in hopes of learning something from the experiences of geniuses like Mary Wells Lawrence and Dan Wieden.</p>
<p>The quotes we found were enlightening, and we think people will find them useful regardless of whether they work in advertising or not.</p>

The company makes carry-on bags and full-size suitcases, along with accessories like luggage tags and <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> blankets.</p><p>So what is the perfect suitcase? And can it actually live up to the hype? I got to try one on a recent trip and found out for myself.</p><h2>Quick, easy charging </h2><p>I used Away's smallest model, the <a href="https://www.awaytravel.com/luggage/carry-on/sand" target="_blank">Carry-On</a>, on a five-day trip to the San Francisco area. The bag retails for $225, about $25 less than a Samsonite bag of approximately the same size. The option to charge my phone via my suitcase is one I never knew I wanted, but now can't imagine living without.</p><p>As someone who frequently lets my phone's battery run down all the way, but also loves the convenience of having my boarding pass on my phone, being able to charge up my phone while waiting for my flight - and not being tethered to the wall - was crucial, and helped make my travel experience almost seamless.</p><p>The bag has two USB ports hidden underneath the retractable handle which allow you to charge an iPhone up to five times and an iPad more than once.</p><p>Away includes  a cable to recharge the suitcase's built-in battery and a screwdriver if you want to remove the battery completely. The company recommends you do this if traveling to Asia, as customs officials can be more strict. </p><p>It's worth noting that Away is one of several options for so-called "smart luggage," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/raden-makes-smart-suitcases-2016-8/#heres-the-outside-of-radens-store-in-soho-in-new-york-city-1">with Raden</a> and Bluesmart One also selling device-charging bags.</p><h2>An 'impenetrable' exterior</h2><p>Before leaving, I set a goal for myself: I would only bring the Away bag and try not to overpack. That turned out to be surprisingly easy thanks to the bag's flexible outer shell.</p><p>All of Away's bags have the same exterior: a plastic, scratch-resistant surface that won't break under pressure. It was durable enough to hold up while traversing Grand Central Station and flexible enough that I could stuff it in the bins worry-free.</p><p>And after five days of travel, my bag came home without a scratch.</p><p>The flexibility also aids in packing. Of any suitcases I've packed in, Away's was the easiest, since I was able to stuff clothes and shoes in without worrying about it putting stress on the zippers. Plus, I was able to push down on the outer shell as much as I wanted without worrying about putting stress on the plastic. </p><h2>The interior</h2><p>While nothing about the interior of the bag is revolutionary, it is cleverly designed. One side of the bag is intended for shoes and other harder objects like toiletries, while the other side is meant for clothes and soft items.</p><p>Every bag comes with a detachable laundry bag that's folded inside a small pocket and can be unrolled, filled, and attached to the inside of the suitcase with a metal snap. Each bag also has a stiff pocket that can be used to store a laptop, tablet, or book, and doubles as a means to tamp down your clothes. </p><p>As a chronic over-packer, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I was able to fit inside the suitcase (three pairs of pants, six tops, two sweaters, two pairs of shoes, and much more). It's deceptively spacious inside and could have served me well even if I was traveling for a full week. </p><p>And even fully packed, the bag is super-lightweight.
