<ul><li>A local court in Japan has ruled the country’s failure to recognise same-sex marriages as ‘unconstitutional’.</li><li>According to a court in Sapporo, the stance is at odds with the constitutionally-guaranteed right to equality.</li><li>In India, the Delhi High Court is hearing a similar case, in which the central government has said that same-sex marriages are not at par with the Indian concept of a ‘family unit’. </li></ul>A Japanese court has ruled the island nation’s stance to not recognise same-sex marriages as ‘unconstitutional’ in a symbolic win for the <keyword id="1218847" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="LGBTQ-community">LGBTQ community</keyword>. The country’s constitution asserts that marriage is a union between ‘both sexes’ in Article 14, which means individuals of the same gender cannot get married. However, according to a district court in Sapporo — capital city of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido — this is at odds with the constitutional right to equality. Japan is not the only Asian country fighting to legalise same-sex marriages. Even though this does not mean that same-sex marriage is legal on the island nation, the judgement is being lauded as a symbolic victory within the local LGBTQ community. “This is one huge step forward in Japan. We are moving closer to making our dream come true,” Ai Nakajima, who was one the original plaintiffs in the case, told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-56425002">BBC.</a> The island nation is considered to be among one of the most developed nations in the world. Yet, it is the only country with the Group of Seven (G7) — which includes France, Germany, the US, the UK, Canada, and Italy — that does not allow same-sex marriage. It asserted that Western ideas cannot be imported to the Indian context, citing the Indian constitutional law and jurisprudence. The court has posted the matter for further hearing on April 20. The fight to legalise same-sex marriage is a tough one world over. Thousands of activists and gay rights supporters gathered outside the court in Taiwan’sTaipei to witness the landmark judgment. Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, has shown her support to the LGBTQ community right before the election in 2016. The island has been leading the Asian continent to press gay rights across the world. It has a large gay community and it also hosts the biggest pride parade in Asia. The debate The issue of same-sex marriages has divided society in Taiwan. Although the court ruled the definition of marriage unconstitutional, the government faced a backlash when 67% of the people voted against same-sex marriages in a <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/25/asia/taiwan-same-sex-marriage-referendum/index.html">referendum. </a> The lawmakers were debating to vote on three different bills — one which was drafted by the country’s cabinet and the other two were drafted by conservative groups. The government’s bill was the only one that offered adoption rights though limited. The other two bills focused more on partnerships such as same-sex family relationships or same-sex union than marriages.

Taiwan becomes first Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage

<ul class="summary-list"><li>June is Pride Month, and more and more US adults self-identify as <keyword id="6371693" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="LGBT">LGBT</keyword>, according to <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/329708/lgbt-identification-rises-latest-estimate.aspx">Gallup</a>.</li><li>The <keyword id="6372870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="census">Census</keyword> Bureau's American Community Survey includes data on how many households in a state are <keyword id="190400" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="same-sex">same-sex</keyword> couples.</li><li>Delaware had the highest share, excluding DC, of same-sex couple households in a state at 1.3%.</li></ul>June is Pride Month, and an increasing share of US adults identify as LGBT. According to <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/329708/lgbt-identification-rises-latest-estimate.aspx">Gallup</a>, 5.6% of Americans 18 and over identified as LGBT in 2020, up from 3.5% in 2012. Additionally, 54.6% of LGBT adults self-identified as bisexual in 2020. At the generation level, 15.9% of Gen Z identified as LGBT compared to 9.1% of millennials and 3.8% of Gen X."One of the main reasons LGBT identification has been increasing over time is that younger generations are far more likely to consider themselves to be something other than heterosexual," <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/329708/lgbt-identification-rises-latest-estimate.aspx">Gallup</a> wrote. Data from the<a href="https://www.census.gov/newsroom/stories/lgbt-pride-month.html"> Census Bureau </a>also provides some information about LGBTQ+ adults. The <a href="https://data.census.gov/cedsci/table?q=ACSDT1Y2019.B11009&amp;tid=ACSDT1Y2019.B11009&amp;hidePreview=trueiew=true">Census' American Community Survey</a> has data about who makes up households, including same-sex married and unmarried couples. Based on the <a href="https://data.census.gov/cedsci/table?q=ACSDT1Y2019.B11009&amp;tid=ACSDT1Y2019.B11009&amp;hidePreview=trueiew=true">2019 American Community Survey</a>, the most recent year with data available, there were 980,276 same-sex couple households in the US. Among same-sex couple households, 568,110 or 58% were same-sex married couple households. Less than 1% of the 122,802,852 total US households, 0.8%, were same-sex couple households in 2019. We can further see the breakdown at the state level. The following <keyword id="6369896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Map">map</keyword> shows the share of same-sex couple households in a state in 2019:Delaware had the highest share of households in the state that are same-sex couples. In Delaware, 4,793 of the 376,239 households, or 1.3%, were same-sex couple households in 2019. DC had an even higher share at 2.4%, where 7,003 of the 291,570 households were same-sex households in 2019. On the other hand, North Dakota had the smallest share among households in the state at 0.2% or 785 households.Although Delaware had the highest share among households in the state, California had the largest number. There were 85,104 same-sex married couple households and 50,752 same-sex unmarried couple households for a total of 135,856. That means 1.0% of households in California are same-sex couples.Overall, the <a href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2020/12/same-sex-couples-more-likely-than-opposite-sex-couples-to-have-both-members-working.html">Census Bureau wrote</a> 65.1% of same-sex couples in 2019 had both partners working, higher than the 51.1% among opposite-sex couples. Male same-sex couples had a slightly larger percentage of both partners working compared to female same-sex couples at 75.8% and 72.6% respectively. Additionally, the Census Bureau found based on the <a href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2020/09/fifteen-percent-of-same-sex-couples-have-children-in-their-household.html">Current Population Survey</a> that 14.7% of same-sex couples in the US in 2019 had at least one child under 18 at home. That is lower than the 37.8% for opposite-sex couples. This may in part explain why same-sex couples are more likely to have both partners working than opposite-sex couples. "The presence of young children may influence a couple's decision to have one parent stay home to care for the children," the <a href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2020/12/same-sex-couples-more-likely-than-opposite-sex-couples-to-have-both-members-working.html">Census Bureau wrote</a>.The percent share of same-sex couples with children where both parents were employed was higher than the share for opposite-sex couples, at 72.4% and 65.6% respectively, based on 2019 data from the American Community Survey. The shares were still higher for same-sex couples than opposite-sex couples when looking at working partners with children under 6 and between 6 to 17. The Census Bureau notes things like age and marital status may also play some role in the differences in percentages between both partners working for same-sex and opposite-sex couples.

"The student body is outraged that an incredible administrator, coach, and human being was fired solely because of his love and marriage for another human being. We are uniting in order to change the Catholic Church's opposition of gay marriage," the petition states.
In a letter to parents, the Catholic high school said that Zmuda's employment was terminated because his same-sex marriage violated his signed contract with the school.
Eastside <a href="http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2022494004_gayprincipalprotestxml.html">closed early Thursday following the student protests</a>, and cancelled Friday's classes due to predicted snow "and in light of the difficult day," according to The Seattle Times.

Denmark legalized gay marriage on June 15th, 2012. The bill for the provision was introduced by the government of Helle Thorning-Schmidt. 
 
France France was the thirteenth country to accord legal status to same-sex marriage. It’s <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> was enacted on May 18th, 2013. 
 
Iceland 
Gay marriage legal has been legal in Iceland since June 27th, 2010. Incredibly, no member of the Parliament voted against the bill. 
 
Luxembourg 
Same-sex marriage became legal in Luxembourg since January 1st, 2015. 
 
Netherlands 
Netherlands takes the crown when it comes to legalizing same-sex marriages. The provision has been legal here since April 1st, 2001! 
 
New Zealand 
New Zealand legalized same-sex marriages on 19 August 2013. 
 
Norway 
Same-sex marriage was legalized on January 1st, 2009 in Norway after a when a gender neutral marriage bill was brought into effect. 
It was the first Scandinavian country and the sixth country in the world. 
 
Portugal 
Same-sex marriages have been legal in Portugal since 5 June 2010. The bill for legalization as pending since December 2009. 
 
South Africa 
Same-sex marriage was made legal in South Africa after the Civil Union Act as enacted on November 30th, 2006. 
 
Spain 
Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero began a campaign in 2004 for gay marriage legalization, following which it was indeed legalized on July 3rd, 2005. 
 
Sweden 
Sweden was the seventh country in the world to allow same-sex marriages nationwide. It was made legal since May 1st, 2009. 
 
United Kingdom 
Gay marriage marriage is legal in the UK, except in Northern Ireland. The status of same-sex marriage varies in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. 
 
United States 
The youngest to join the list, the US effectively legalized gay marriage nation-wide on June 26th, 2015. 
 
Uruguay 
Uruguay legalized same-sex marriage on August 5th, 2013. A bill for its legalization was passed on December 12th, 2012.

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:401px"><div class="image"></div>Getty</div>WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President <keyword id="10212" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bill-Clinton">Bill Clinton</keyword> is calling on the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> to overturn a <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> he signed that bars federal recognition of same-sex marriages.
Clinton says the Defense of <keyword id="6355896" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Marriage">Marriage</keyword> Act is incompatible with the Constitution. He says he signed the law in 1996 to avoid legislation that would have been even worse for gays.
Clinton writes in a Washington Post op-ed that American society has changed. He says he now realizes the law discriminates against gays and provides an excuse for others to discriminate, too.
The Obama administration has stopped defending the law in court, and the Supreme Court is expected to take up a challenge to it later this month.
Separately, the high court is also considering whether California's gay marriage ban should stand.

Marco Rubio of Florida called a vote on a bill to codify same-sex marriage into federal law a "stupid waste of time" in front of openly gay Democratic Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin — who said she then confronted Rubio about his remarks. Rubio <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2022/07/21/politics/tammy-baldwin-marco-rubio-same-sex-marriage/index.html">made the comments to CNN</a> as he was walking onto an elevator and Baldwin overheard him, according to the <keyword id="11893589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news" source="Orion">news</keyword> outlet. "You probably would have loved to be on the elevator to see the exchange after," Baldwin told CNN on Thursday, explaining that she confronted Rubio about what he said. Baldwin said that she told Rubio that "'the recent Supreme Court decision eroded a constitutional right to privacy. There's a whole bunch of cases that have been decided based on a constitutional right to privacy that are in jeopardy,' which he disagrees with. And anyways, I said 'we'll be talking some more,' " CNN reported. The Wisconsin senator would not say what Rubio said in response to her and she wouldn't reveal whether she was insulted by Rubio's comment, according to CNN. "We're not going to get into [that]," Baldwin told CNN. "I'm counting votes."Representatives for Baldwin did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Insider on Friday. When reached on Friday, a spokesman for Rubio refused to comment and instead pointed to remarks that Rubio made to Insider on Wednesday.
